'The Prisoners of Lilac Walls' (Rira no Kabe no Shuujintachi) (Star 2010) subs

These subs were timed to the Bow Hall version with the Star Troupe. I timed it to a broadcast on Sky Stage but with some retiming it should fit the DVD release. Let me know if you have problems and I'll do my bets to help you do that, or you can use online tools like sub shifter And if you use VLC you can resync them on the go.

Note that they also filmed the day in Tokyo, and the subs won't sync to that one (the audio is quite inferior to the Bow version if you're in doubt which one you have). The lines should be the same, and you could use the subs as a script, though. That won't work for the Moon Troupe version with Kaname, as it was unfortunately heavily edited to fit whatever time retraints they had at the time.

Last, these subs were done by ear, so there will be more mistakes than usual.

Mei-chan no Shitsuji (Hoshigumi 2011) subs

AT LAST. between travel, wedding planning, and covid, this kind of fell by the wayside for a bit, but IT'S DONE. my first two act!!!

first of all, wow, otoha minori is great. that could be my entire translation notes. she's so cute. all the musumeyaku in this show are so cute. and the otokoyaku are just as good!! we have suave ikemen beni, loudmouth osananajimi miyaruri, and villain yurika, please, i am a simple creature, act 2 was so hard to sub because i kept blushing. plus, tiny baby kiki and coto! i didn't actually watch this show in full before i started my sub, and wanting to know what happens next was SUCH a motivator, lol. if you're familiar with the manga, it's pretty close except for some things left out or rearranged; if you're familiar with the drama, it is QUITE different. tl;dr this show is SO MUCH FUN, and if you like tropey 00s shoujo it is not to be missed.

TL notes:

yamada tami. all of her lines switch between several regional dialects, so i just kind of..... went ham ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i do not believe in localizing honorifics when a story's set in japan, so. pretend you're all reading manga in 2004 with the little vocab guide in the back cover! i DID translate ojousama, because it's like, half the dialogue, and "my lady" felt romantic.

there's a line about "demon hunting" re: shinobu, which makes sense in the manga where he's referred to as the "white demon" - this got dropped from the script, so i localized it out.

Zuka at a family reunion

Rio is the wine aunt who met your kids once and they won’t stop talking about her. You think she’s a bad influence and she’s probably turned your children against you. Your kids love Rio more and you just have to accept that

Mizu is that one uncle who’s always there but you never talk to. The older you get, the more you believe shes affiliated with the Mafia. Now it’s been years and your family hasn’t heard from her for a long time

Sagiri is that one cousin who stresses you out, and you kinda hope you don’t ever have to see her again. Her laugh is drilled into your head. Also frequently comes up in convo because the rest of the family loves her

Shizuki is your aunties’ cousins’ boyfriends’ sisters’ friend who teaches the young children how to do karate and self defence in the middle of dinner time once you ask her about what she does for a living

Kiriya is the wine aunts (Rio) boyfriend who drinks a lot of beer but is also that manly material that the younger kids at the family reunion fall for. Years later those kids realize that was weird of them

Ryouga is that one person you sometimes see, usually quiet in the corner. You don’t know who she’s related to but your just gonna trust she’s in the family

Komu is the older cousin y’all strive to be but can’t. The younger cousins want to be like her cuz she’s cool and sits at the adult table. She doesn’t really see this as a family reunion, more of a place to assert absolute dominance over those tiny children

Yuzuru Kurenai is the one with the pretty laugh that you can always recognize. She’ll buy her nieces and nephews anything they want because she wishes she had children of her own. Very nice pretty girl and popular with the single men at the reunion but they don’t stand a chance

weird ask but when is it appropriate to laugh at jokes in the grand theatre? i feel like i never hear laughter on recordings (unless it's a kurenai yuzuru show lol) where i'd hear it in a broadway audience, is it considered rude there?

It’s not rude to laugh! I’m not sure why it shows up on some recordings but not others, but I’ve been in the theater for comedies/skits/ad libs and they definitely get audible laughs 😁
