University of Brighton written statement

Art is a huge part of my life I am constantly shifting and expanding my influences as I mature and grow. For a period, I was particularly interested in Shin Kwangho and his charcoal collections; this led me to a reappraise my appreciation for charcoal drawings. I recreated some of his charcoal pieces and found his technique of combining charcoal and oil paint to be unique and interesting. This made me want to continue to use the oil and charcoal mediums for my other paintings. I've yet to really settle on one strong interest, but speaking broadly I'm interested in realism, dark colours, elegant and intricate details, portraits, fluid movement/composition. 

I think all that art has aspects that can be appreciated and even if I am not personally drawn to a piece there is always some techniques to admire and learn from. Currently my interests and the works that influence my style are wide and constantly changing. 

During my A-level course I decided to incorporate knitting into my final project this was a risk as I had never knitted before and needed to push myself to not only learn to knit but to do a large amount of quality knitting in a restricted time frame, although difficult it paid off and I was able to submit it with my final piece. 

Recently I have been intrigued by silent films, in particular 1920’s German films. I was captured by Robert Wiene, the director of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari which was part of the German Expressionist moment. From this I discovered Conrad Veidt who has worked on many famous and influential films; such as The Man who Laughs which is a film that inspired the creation the infamous comic book villain The Joker. I have a real infinity with anime and comic book art. 

Music inspires me, when listening I can imagine a drawing or painting that encapsulates that song to me and typically, I can get lost for hours in a new creation where the bones were underpinned by the music I was inspired by. The concept that someone or something looks like a sound or a piece of music intrigues me; it's interesting that a large number of people consciously or subconsciously agree on correlations like this. I'd like to try and explore this idea further and create pieces that inspire and bring to mind other forms of media and music. 

I think movement in art makes pieces more engaging, eye-catching and relatable. I discovered the artist Sally McKay and was drawn by the simplicity of movement within her pieces, this style is something I aim to explore throughout my future work, as well as finding and developing my own personal style. When choosing what path of art to study I considered every option but in the end the deciding factor was pure enjoyment. Throughout my time in University, I would like to improve and refine both technical skill and creative thinking alongside exploring new mediums I am yet to encompass in my work.

Above details an oil painting replicating a portrait created by Shin Kwangho. He is a South Korean artist whose work depicts his subjects' emotions through colour and the technique of layering of paint. I believe Kwangho’s work is themed around mental health and the erasure and dismissal of this issue in Asia. Many in these countries experience burnout from high workload and societal expectations in education and the workplace, the frayed swirling, clashing colours and application of the paint used in his painting could hint to this theme and frustration.

One day, you'll lose yourself

You'll find it lost in to the wonderings of life.

You can't seem to see any, but a knife.

You thought that extracting it, would pierce the pain you have inside.

But then you'll realize, that it is too shallow to even touch your damaged soul.

Then one day, you realize you thought you were aware of your wary environment.

You closed your eyes, you thought that not seeing is not real.

You thought that light is the only one capable in blinding you.

Tears suddenly clouded your vision, maybe its the clouded mind too.

One day, you'll lose yourself in trying to find it.

But whatever happens, don't get tired to try and look for what is lost.

This world is a little too overlooking at most.

I say, "souls are not lost, but only forgotten."
