1940 08 12 Bf109E-4 JG53 Pik As - Mark Postlethwaite - cover art Osprey
On 12 August 1940, JG 53 was tasked with carrying out a ‘Freie Jagd’ off Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight in support of Ju 88s of KG 51 that were attacking Portsmouth harbour and Ventnor radar station on the Isle of Wight. Leading 1./JG 53 was Hauptmann Hans-Karl Mayer, who was flying a Bf109E-4 coded ‘White 8’. His Rottenflieger was Unteroffizier Heinrich Rühl in a Bf 109E-1 coded ‘White 10’.
Flying at 8500 m, Mayer spotted three Hurricanes below attacking a lone Bf 110 at 1220 hrs, and although he quickly engaged the enemy fighters the Bf 110 pilot bailed out. Mayer selected the right Hurricane and Rühl the left, the former firing a total of 20 x 20 mm shells and 80 x 7.92 mm machine gun rounds into the RAF fighter, which immediately burst into flames and dived into the sea for what would be Mayer’s tenth victory of the war. Having already exhausted his supply of cannon shells, Rühl fired 200 machine gun rounds at his Hurricane, which then hit the sea in a gentle curve.
Mayer now turned his attention to the remaining Hurricane, which had been engaged by the rest of his Staffel. This combat was not as one-sided, however, for his Bf 109E was hit six times. Mayer’s combat report noted;
‘After my first kill I flew back to the dogfight with the last remaining Hurricane against several aircraft of my Staffel. I immediately attacked and was able to open fire twice, and also received some hits myself. The damaged aircraft tried to escape in the direction of the coast but I stayed close to it, while my Staffel lost me in the haze. At first it made only slight evasive actions, and so I was able to get in several well-aimed bursts. The aircraft started emitting black smoke, went down in a shallow dive and disintegrated on impact.’
Mayer had achieved his second victory of the mission, firing ten cannon and 250 machine gun rounds at the Hurricane, which, after hitting the sea, sank immediately. Although it cannot be said for certain,it is believed that Mayer and Rühl accounted for Plt Off John Harrison, Acting Flt Lt Wilhelm Pankratz and Sgt Josef Kwiecinski of No 145 Sqn, all of whom were reported missing in action off the Isle of Wight at times that matched the three German claims

BEST OF SIFF: ROUND 3
YEAR OF THE FOX: DIRECTED BY MEGAN GRIFFITHS
A 17-year-old, Ivy, who was adopted as an infant into a wealthy and notable Aspen family, is navigating the fallout of her parent's bitter divorce.
Nearly all coming-of-age stories are identical, with the teen learning to cope with their life and self in a self-discovering fashion. So I was surprised to see Year of the Fox take a much darker approach to the classic story. Though the story implementing Eyes Wide Shut Aspen addition may not have worked due to its predictability and unbelievability, I still respect it for taking a different approach. Sarah Jeffery shines in her performance of perfectly capturing a teen coming of age, with all the hormones and emotions that come with it. Overall, I enjoyed this movie for what it was, and I respect it for taking a different approach to its story.
My Rating: B

STELLA: DIRECTED BY TYLER DOEHRING
Chef Ciro Oliva wants nothing more than his Neapolitan pizzeria Concettina ai Tre Santi to be the first of its kind to earn the converted Michelin Star, but that's easier said than done with the notoriously secretive organization.
If you are not craving pizza by the end of this documentary, then you have no soul. Stella is a mouthwatering documentary of the quest for a pizzeria to attain a Michelin Star. It masterfully showcases the art of pizza making like no one has before. It truly honors the chefs behind the pizza making, where you wonder how haven't they earned a Michelin Star. Overall, if you have some pizza cravings, their movie is perfect for you.

FILIP: DIRECTED BY MICHAL KWIECINSKI
941, the Warsaw ghetto. Filip, a young Polish Jew, with his beloved Sarah, are getting ready to perform in a cabaret to earn a living. During the premiere, a shootout takes place, during which Sara, as well as Philip’s relatives sitting in the audience, are killed. Two years later, the man works as a waiter in the restaurant of an upscale hotel in Frankfurt.
As for Holocaust and WW2 movies, the era has been pushed to all the boundaries you think they could. However, 80 years after the war, the era can still reveal some unique stories. Filip gives up a glimpse of a Jew hiding in plain sight in Frankfurt, Germany, as he struggles with his race and his sexual desires in a country that wants to see him hang. It's a fascinating character study into the psychological trauma and strength needed to survive Nazi Germany. Eryk Kulm is the heart of this film with his powerful and heartbreaking performance. If you have a chance to see this, definitely go watch it.

IRATI: DIRECTED BY PAUL URKIJO ALIJO
Western Pyrenees, year 778. When his land is threatened by the ruthless armies of the Frankish emperor, a Basque warlord asks for help from his ancestral gods.
When the official program was released for SIFF, the moment I saw the picture for Irati, I knew I was done with it, and it did not disappoint. Irati is a fun fantasy adventure that highlights an underrated mythology. The story is fascinating as it's filled with great characters and stunning character design. The story masterfully weaves Spain's pagan mythology that highlights its unique nature. Furthermore, the battle sequences are spectacular, given its limited budget. Overall, Irati is a lot of fun and definitely worth a theater experience.

..:: #24. GRiZ - The Prayer ::..
While from the outside it might be easy to lump GRiZ into the bucket of obnoxious EDM producers who only care about forcibly dragging legions of drugged out youth up forced peaks and into deafening drops, that would be a gross miscalculation. "The Prayer" is a terrific example of Grant Kwiecinski's ability to patiently craft a full bodied and transcendent experience. He takes his time slowly buttering us up with a collection of jangling piano keys, syrupy bass funk, bright guitars, and shimmering synths while a voice drapes loving affirmations upon us from above. Pairing positivity with an addicting electro-funk pulse is not a new strategy, but this one is done so well that letting ourselves get caught within its grasp is seriously intoxicating.
Best Moment: Yes, the best moment is the second drop at 5:09 where GRiZ takes all the sounds he's introduced so far and starts throwing them at each other until they break into pieces, but the fact that we took our time getting there instead of being forced makes the payoff all the sweeter.

I call bs on this one. did she displace her carbon emissions in some way? im being ironic here... she could have used even a fraction of that money to put food on someone else's table, or chip in far less for a far less-personal but greater-good kinda cause. Honestly I'm disappointed to see stupid decisions like this being promoted. The option of helping others doesn't seem to click with some people. Doom Becomes Us

An Ancient Egyptian Physician Cited As the 'First Woman Doctor' Likely Never Existed
Tumblr media
Merit Ptah was an ancient Egyptian physician, often revered as the world's first female doctor. She was thought to live nearly 5,000 years ago...but she likely never existed, according to new findings.
"Merit Ptah was everywhere," from online posts about women in STEM and popular history books to computer games, Jakub Kwiecinski, a medical historian and instructor at the University of Colorado's School of Medicine, said in a UC statement. "And yet, with all these mentions, there was no proof that she really existed."
So Kwiecinski spent some time searching through literature, looking for any such proof. He traced the first mention of Merit Ptah to a 1938 book describing the history of women in medicine around the world, written by medical historian, doctor and activist Kate Campbell Hurd-Mead. Read more.

Poland’s queer celebrities are using Taylor Swift to fight unhinged bigots
The video features some of Poland's biggest and most visible LGBTQ politicians, celebrities and activists.
Tumblr media
Between considering a Russian-style gay propaganda ban, issuing “LGBT-free zones” stickers to businesses and pelting Pride marchers with fireworks and bricks, Poland’s queerphobes have become violently unhinged.
That’s why Jakub Kwiecinski grabbed a bunch of his Polish pals to make their own lip-sync video of Taylor Swift’s recent anti-hate tune, “You Need To Calm Down.”
Kwiecinski tells LGBTQ Nation, “When David and I watched Taylor Swift’s music video ‘You Need To Calm Down’ with all LGBT stars it inspired us to make polish version of it.”
He continued, “We didn’t have any money but had a huge will to do it, so we asked LGBT people to record their own videos and send them to us. The response was overwhelming — we got 350 videos! Considering the huge scale of homophobia in our country, these were 140 brave people.”
Among those who participated are some of the most important and famous LGBT people in the country, including the Deputy President of Warsaw, Paweł Rabiej; party leader and European Parliament member, Robert Biedron; Top Model winner, Radek Pestka; and many other journalists, activists and TV stars.
Also present in the video are famous model, Romek Gelard; Mr. Gay Poland, Lukasz Sabat; Poland’s Teacher Of The Year, Przemysław Staron; possibly the most famous drag queen in Poland, Kim Lee; famous Adele-esque drag queen, Adelon; popular vlogger, Natalia Radtke; and two popular lesbian couples known as This Is Klenska and Les Be Together; and others.
“We did it for fun but also to draw world’s attention on LGBT rights in our country,” Kwiecinski said. “That’s why video ends with two boards where we inform people about the huge scale of homophobia in our country.”
Here is the video of the Polish LGBT video version of Taylor Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down”:
