“Nobody saw the owl, white in the moonlight, black against the stars, nobody heard him as he glided over on silent wings of velvet. The owl saw and heard everything.
He settled in a tree, his claws hooked on a branch, and he stared at the girl in the glade below. The wind moaned, rocking the branch, scudding low clouds across the evening sky. It lifted the hair of the girl. The owl was watching her, with his round, dark eyes.”  ― A.C.H. Smith, Labyrinth: A Novel Based on the Jim Henson Film

As the 40th anniversary of #JimHenson's #Labyrinth approaches, the beloved '80s fantasy film is being adapted into a graphic novel.
Based on A.C.H. Smith's novelization, Jim Henson's Labyrinth is brought to life by writer #KylaVanderklugt and artist #GiorgioSpalletta. The graphic novel features covers by Miguel Mercado, Veronica Fish, David Mack, and an upcoming piece by Elizabeth Torque.
This adaptation follows previous Labyrinth comics, including Marvel's 1986 one-shot and #BOOMStudios' Labyrinth: Coronation. Spalletta expressed his excitement about exploring the magical world that fascinated him as a child.

Indie Bookstore Adventures: Austin Edition
Tumblr media
Yesterday was my birthday (I have officially upgraded to version 3.1!). When my partner asked me how I wanted to celebrate my new revolution around the sun, I told him that I wanted to spend the day going to my favorite independent bookstores in town, as well as some newer ones that I hadn’t yet had the chance to visit!
If you know anything at all about the indie bookstore scene in Austin, you have probably at least heard of BookPeople – as you should! Not only is BookPeople the largest independent bookstore in the state of Texas, it’s also a cornerstone of the literary community in Austin. (They also make very yummy tea lattes and Italian sodas in their coffee shop, FYI.) And don’t get me wrong, it’s definitely one of my favorite places in town. But for my birthday, I wanted to venture into some new(ish) territory with some of my city’s more hidden gems for book lovers. I was not disappointed.
Titan Moon Comics (Cedar Park) I had visited Titan Moon Comics once before and loved it so much that I definitely wanted to return for my birthday! This little treasure of a comic shop is tucked away in a shopping center in the suburb of Cedar Park. They have an amazing collection of classic and contemporary comics and graphic novels, as well as a decently-sized manga collection. It’s an all-ages comic shop that carries comics that are appropriate for kids and teens alongside no shortage of selections for adult readers. Something that I really appreciate about them is that they carry a lot of selections from women and LGBTQ creators. They also host RPG and CCG events for both kids and adults. They have plenty of D&D supplies, a store membership program, and a comic book club, as well as incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff. It may require a bit of a trek, but it is absolutely worth it if you’re a comic book lover.
Snags: Labyrinth: Beyond the Goblin City. This is a collection of side stories based off of the classic Jim Henson film told in graphic novel form, with contributions from a variety of artists and writers. As an avowed Henson and Labyrinth fan, there was no way I was going home without it.
Saga: Volume 2: Brian K. Vaughn’s Saga is one of my favorite series. I read the first two volumes in college for a class on graphic novels and promptly proceeded to devour as many volumes as I could get from the public library. Now that I’m older and have (slightly) more disposable income, I’ve decided to start adding them to my home collection. I picked up Volume 1 on my first visit to Titan Moon, and naturally had to acquire the second on this trip.
Tumblr media
Black Pearl Books
Black Pearl Books is a Black owned, family-run bookshop, and you absolutely must give it a visit if you’re in the area (or take a look at their online store if you’re not!). They carry titles in every genre and for every age level, as well as some really cool crafts from local artists. They also have a community book exchange where you can take a book for free and leave one in its place! The staff was so sweet and welcoming, and they even gave us a tour around the shop since it was our first time visiting.
Snags: Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury: This is a thriller told from the perspective of two young Black women in alternating timelines who both have a mysterious – and haunting – connection to the “Miracle Mansion” and a host of horrors that lurk within. But it’s not simply a tale of a haunted house: it’s a story about facing the monsters that hide in plain sight, which – unfortunately – are often the people closest to us. I know that it’s going to be a heavy read, but as a survivor myself, sometimes it’s cathartic to read about the darker parts of the human condition; while everyone processes their experiences differently, I know that I personally enjoy reframing survivorship in an artistic way because it’s a way to take control of the narrative of your experiences, which is sometimes the only thing we can do to heal and move on. I’m looking forward to seeing the approach Sambury takes in this book.
Tumblr media
First Light Books
This is a new indie bookshop that opened up this year in the Hyde Park neighborhood. The building it occupies was formerly a post office that was an important staple of the neighborhood, and the owners of First Light wanted to ensure that the new bookshop remained a community-centered space. It’s an incredibly cozy shop complete with a book nook and a tiny coffee shop and cafe area, as well as patio seating outside (there’s also a walk-up coffee window that’s open to the public). For being a small bookshop, they have a pretty good selection of titles and some cool gift items as well. They’re also very receptive to community feedback: I signed up for the membership program (because of course I did) and within a day was sent a welcome email with a survey for what sort of books and events I’d like to see at the shop. I especially recommend stopping by if you happen to be around the UT campus, as it’s not too far of a trek north of the Forty Acres – though far enough away for some peace and quiet. Snags: We Have Always Lived in the Castle and Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson: I’ve always enjoyed Shirley Jackson’s short stories, and We Have Always Lived in the Castle has been on my TBR list for ages, so no time like my birthday to get my own copy. I also got my partner a copy of A Clockwork Orange because he’s a fan of the film but has never read the novel.
Tumblr media
Kinokuniya
Okay, I’m cheating a little with this one: Kinokuniya isn’t technically an independent bookstore. But it is one of my favorite bookstores in the world, and since my partner had never been, I insisted that we visit for my birthday.
Kinokuniya is a magical wonderland for manga lovers, with a huge selection of notable series as well as more obscure ones, in every genre and age category. (Don’t worry, all of the, um…mature manga are sealed to keep the young’uns at bay.) They also carry manga in both English and Japanese. But it’s not just a manga shop – they have a huge selection of English language books, ranging from literary classics to cookbooks to graphic novels to contemporary YA, and everything in between. If, like me, you are of the witchy inclination, they even have a sizable collection of books on witchcraft and Paganism, as well as a nice selection of Tarot cards. They also have plenty of anime collectibles and a fabulous selection of pretty stationary. Oh, and a sizable section of Studio Ghibli merch complete with a lovable huggable life-sized Totoro plushie, naturally.
Snags:
The Secret History of Christmas Baking: Recipes and Stories From Tomb Offerings to Gingerbread Boys by Linda Raedisch: I.Love.Baking. I detest cooking large meals, but I will happily bake enough cookies to feed an army. And I’m always incredibly busy baking around this time of year to celebrate Yule (the winter solstice). Moreover, I’m a history nerd and I love learning about the obscure or overlooked origins of even the most mundane things. And man, has this book delivered on that so far. The history of so many beloved Yuletide dishes we enjoy in the western world is fascinatingly complex – and sometimes disturbingly dark – interweaving cultures across thousands of years, from ancient Egyption bakers to the medieval confectioners of Baghdad to the pagan Samnites of southern Italy who were cooking up a rudimentary form of nougat in their sacred walnut groves in the time of the Caesars to the interior European Celts to – naturally – the peoples of Germany who gave the English (and, later, us Americans) the modern tradition of the Christmas tree. The book also includes plenty of tasty recipes and fun table crafts to enjoy on the tour, of course.
I also got a special dual-language edition of Winnie-the-Pooh that has the original British English text on one page side-by-side with the Japanese hiragana translation on the other. I have adored Winnie-the-Pooh since childhood (I have an omnibus collection of the original books) and languages are one of my special interests. I already own a Greek copy of Pride & Prejudice, so I figured that this would be another great collectible to add to my tiny multilingual book collection.
Tumblr media
Vintage Bookstore & Wine Bar
Yes, you read that right. Vintage is both a bookstore and a wine bar, and it is undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous bookshops I’ve ever been to. This family-owned shop is housed in a beautiful old building downtown with the bookstore and wine bar on the first floor and seating on the first and second floors, along with a small yard outside. They carry fiction and non-fiction YA and adult books (they even have a separate room devoted entirely to fantasy and sci-fi) and the wine bar carries a variety of wines, beer, and mocktails along with some bakery treats. They also have a small market-style refrigerator where you can purchase charcuterie supplies to create your own spread. We definitely hung out here and enjoyed ourselves here for a while (and I recommend that you stop by and do the same).
Snags:
In the Shadow of Perseus by Claire Heywood: Let’s be real: most if not all of the classical Greek “heroes” were no heroes at all. Nevertheless, I have always loved Greek mythology and I never can pass up a retelling of the myths, especially when it includes a feminist reframing. (Case in point, Lore Olympus is my favorite comic. Ever.) This is the story of Perseus as seen through the eyes of the three most prominent women in his myth: his mother Danae, his victim Medusa, and his wife Andromeda. Their stories all intersect to create a very different narrative than the one you’ll find in the classical texts.
The Dressmakers of Auschwitz by Lucy Adlington: I don’t often purchase non-fiction books – if I’m in the mood for non-fiction, I usually prefer to check titles out from the library or borrow from a friend. But this one really caught my eye. It’s a little-known history of the Holocaust centering on a group of 25 female prisoners in Auschwitz who were chosen to sew beautiful garments for the elite wives of the SS guards and officers and used their sewing talents and bonds of found family and friendship to resist the Nazi regime and survive the horrors of the death camp. It even includes an interview with the last surviving seamstress. When we learn about the Holocaust in school or discuss it in conversation, we usually only focus on the fact that Hitler and the Nazis lulled millions of Germans into either supporting their cruel agenda or at least turning a blind eye to the evils of the Third Reich. It’s less common that we hear about the widespread resistance movements from people across Germany (and beyond) – both from targeted groups, and from Germans who did choose to fight back and protect their neighbors. And it’s critically important that these stories get told as well, especially in this day and age when so many of the horrors of the past are reemerging; they remind us that we can fight back against injustice, even in the smallest ways, and we can win.
Honorable Mentions
While they didn’t make my birthday bookstore-hopping list this year, these are some other fabulous local book and comic shops that I recommend: Bookwoman. This is Austin’s home-grown feminist bookstore, celebrating the work of women and queer authors. They carry books in all genres, and they even have a small children’s book section!
Malvern Books. Located near the UT campus just off Guadalupe Street, this is one of my favorite little bookstores in town that primarily carries work from local and regional authors.
Austin Books & Comics. Called “the library of Alexandria of comics” by the Austin Chronicle (and inducted into their “Best Of” Hall of Fame), ABC has been serving the fandom needs of nerds across Central Texas since 1977.
Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy. This local staple has been in business for 35 years, and has since opened four locations outside of Austin (including one all the way in Columbus, Ohio!). It’s a one-stop shop for all things D&D, CCG, RPGs, board games, comics, miniatures, collectibles, and more!
I hope you’ll check some of these bookshops out if you’re in the Austin area. I plan to do more posts like these whenever I have the opportunity to visit new independent bookshops (though they might be a bit scattered since I don’t travel much). Until next time!

Fantasy/Comedy Movie Recs
Tumblr media
I honestly miss the era of cheesy fantasy films; I grew up on them.
Now not saying these are required viewing. But to those of you that have been following Warrior U, you might like these movies too.
In no particular order...
Labyrinth - Jim Henson movie musical with David Bowie writing the soundtrack. Girl asks goblins to steal her brother and is surprised it works.
Ever After - Retelling of Cinderella where the stepmother actually loved her husband and has a nuanced performance. Gorgeous costumes, plus consequences for lying to the royal family.
The Magical Legends of Leprechauns - Made for TV movie that's Romeo and Juliet but told with fairies in Ireland. Lots of types of fae are used in this. Remasters tried to interpolate the footage and it doesn't look good, so if you can find the VHS version go with that.
Robinhood: Men in Tights - Parody film of Robinhood, super quotable and meta.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Parody of the tales of King Aurther. It was made into a Broadway musical (also amazing). It's kinda like a montage of skits and all the horses are just guys with coconuts.
Gamers Dorkness Rising (and it's sequel) - Indie movie about DnD (sequel parodies Magic the Gathering) Had an A plot that's an in-character telling of the campaign and a B plot with the players IRL. Probably one of my favorite movies.
Ella Enchanted - 2000s cheese, based on a novel and stars Anne Hathaway.
Princess Bride - Classic fairytale stuff, the swordfight during the princess's capture was preformed on a broken ankle and you CAN'T TELL because he was so committed to doing his own stunts. Has Andre the Giant in it, 10/10.
Penelope - Modern day fantasy about a girl cursed with a pig's nose by a witch generations ago. Cute romance with self-love as a theme.
Pirate Movie - Free on youtube. 80s cheesy parody of the Pirates of Penzance. Minus points for really bad/long 80s ballads thrown in. But still good.
Shrek 1, 2, and 4 (SKIP 3) Felt weird not having this on the list since it literally parodies Disney renaissance films.
Bonus Comic you might like....
Miss Not So Side Kick - Isekai where a girl gets reincarnated into her favorite novel as some minor character and proceeds to spectate her way through the plot. Has excellent art!
The Adventure Zone - Also a DND podcast, but the comic adaptation's pretty lit.
Anyone who has other favs, let me know. I'm hungry for escapism fiction rn.

The clever references from the start of last night’s Rick and Morty
The first thing you may have noticed is a certain skinny, tall, dark haired figure chasing Rick and Morty through a staircase room...
Tumblr media
That character was based on Morpheus AKA Dream of The Endless, otherwise known as The Sandman.  He is the protagonist from Neil Gaiman’s multi-award winning comic book series The Sandman.
Tumblr media
Originally published by DC, Sandman started in late 1988 and was later published by Vertigo (which is owned by DC) Sandman tells the life story of Morpheus, the ruler of the dimension of both Dreams and Nightmares.
The most recent installment of this cult classic comic book series was a prequel that was compiled just last year into the graphic novel called Sandman: Overture.  Sandman: Overture won a 2016 Hugo Award and had imagery very similar to what was in the opening of last night’s Rick and Morty.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Morpheus has certain distinct physical characteristics.  He has thick, wild dark hair and chalk white (or grey) skin.  He is extremely skinny and tall.  He usually wears a black cloak or long black jacket.  At his neck he often used to wear a  “Dreamstone” amulet (originally a ruby though Dream’s newest incarnation wears an emerald).  His eyes are entirely black except for tiny star-like pupils that can flare when he’s emotional.
Tumblr media
All of these distinctive traits can be found in the very character who made his brief appearance last night in the opening of Rick and Morty.
The second thing to note is the room Rick and Morty were in.  It probably looked familiar to you.
That staircase room has appeared in TV and movies for decades, from Jim Henson’s Labyrinth (1986) to Syfy’s Warehouse 13.   That room is called The Escher Room and it is based on a famous optical illusion by M. C. Escher.
Tumblr media
I strongly suspect the choosing of The Escher Room and it’s crumbling at the start of last night’s Rick and Morty was a deliberate nod to the 1986 fantasy film, Jim Henson’s Labyrinth.
Tumblr media
You will notice that The Goblin King, Jareth (Davie Bowie’s character in that picture above) bears a certain physical similarity to Morpheus.  Many fans noticed this.  I have been told that Neil Gaiman is big fan of both Labyrinth and David Bowie.  He even originally modeled his Lucifer Morningstar (who now has a TV series on Fox and first appeared in the Sandman comics) after David Bowie.
Tumblr media
Many fans have noted that Morpheus looks like a photo negative of Jareth from Labyrinth.  Observe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like Morpheus, Jareth also rules his own fantastical dimension where reality bends to his will.
The fact that Morpheus is essentially “Emo Jareth “ (to quote a friend of mine) makes it easy to understand why the familiar visual of the Escher Room was chosen as it was destroyed at the end of the Rick and Morty scene, much like the version shown in the film Labyrinth crumbled around Sarah (the film’s protagonist).
Combining Morpheus with Jareth is an excellent and easy to understand idea much like when the Rick and Morty writers noticed the similarities between Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes and Stephen King’s Needful Things and they merged Mr. Dark (From Something Wicked This way Comes) with the antagonist of Needful Things to create “Mr. Needful” for the episode Something Ricked This Way Comes for season one.
And for anyone wondering, Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This way Comes was published before Stephen King’s Needful Things and even had a film adaptation before Needful Things did as well, though the plots were very similar.
The biggest difference was Something Wicked This way Comes dealt with a sinister carnival that offered you your heart’s desires at a terrible price and Needful Things had the antique shop like in the Rick and Morty episode.  Mr. Dark was the ringmaster of the carnival in Something Wicked This Way Comes.
(A physical comparison of Mr. Dark and Rick and Morty’s Mr. Needful below in images).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the new “Sandman-esque” cameo character was not named and has none of Jareth’s physical traits but does have all of Morpheus’ physical traits he is named Morpheus in my head unless the show decides to have him appear again later and properly names the spoof character.
PS, I would kill for a Scary Terry vs. Morpheus event of some kind.  There’s fan art of Freddy Krueger vs. Morpheus, which I won’t post here because I don’t have permission from the artists who made them but it can be easily googled.

How does Diamond calculate the charts? It all starts at the comic book shop.
Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which includes the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from sales made to thousands of comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world.  Additional sales made to online merchants and other specialty retailers may be included as well.
Unit and dollar market shares are calculated based upon orders for comic books, graphic novels, and magazines invoiced and shipped to Diamond customers during any given month, which comprises pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable. Please note that comics marked with an asterisk (*) have had their reported quantities reduced due to retailer returnability, and thus may rank lower on the charts than their actual sales would reflect.
The New Titles Count Chart includes all titles that were invoiced by Diamond to retailers for the first time during the month and is not the official solicited title count for the month. Variant edition comic books and graphic novels at the same price point count as a single SKU. Variant edition comic books, lenticular covers, digital combo packs, and graphic novels at different price points count as separate SKUs for each edition.

“It pleased him to think of his Labyrinth as a board game; if you got too close to the winning square, you might find a snake taking you back to the start. No one had, and very few had gotten as far as this disturbing girl, who was too old to be turned into a goblin. Jareth examined her face in his crystal. Too old to be a goblin, but too young to be kept by him, damn her innocent eyes.”

Toro’s Pinocchio Casts Tilda Swinton, Casts Cate Blanchett and More
Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, announced the cast of his upcoming project titled Pinocchio. The film will be launched with the releasing partner Netflix. Del Toro is an animation filmmaker, who directed DreamWorks features Kung Fu Panda 3 and Puss in Boots. Let’s find out all the casts of the film and when we will get to watch the next Toro’s masterpiece.
Guillermo del toro Gomez is a Mexican director, actor, author, and also a special effects makeup artist. He has won the Oscars for Best Picture for the film The Shape of Water in 2017 and Best Director for the film Pan’s Labyrinth in 2006. He created many incredible movies like Cronos in 1993, The Devil’s Backbone in 2001, Hellboy in 2004, Blade II in 2002, Pacific Rim in 2013, The Book of Life in 2014, The Hobbit film series in 2012-2014, and many more.
Toro co-authored the novel with Chuck Hogan titled The Strain trilogy in 2009-2011, later the novel was adapted into a comic-book series. He created an animated series named Trollhunters with DreamWorks Animation in 2016-2018. Toro’s beautiful visualization and strong characterization connect any genre be it fairy tales or horror. He had a long time fascination with monsters, which he describes as great powers. His works are known for his use of religious imagery. Toro is obsessed with fairy tales. He describes the fairy tales as two facets. One is pro-institution, which is the reprehensible type of fairy tale. And the other one is entirely anarchic and anti-establishment.
Pinocchio is an upcoming American animated dark-fantasy musical film directed and co-written by Toro. The story is based on the 2002 edition of the 1883 Italian novel written by named The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. The screenplay is written by del Toro, Patrick McHale, Gris Grimly, and Matthew Robbins. The film is produced by ShadowMachine and The Jim Henson Company and co-produced with Necropia Entertainment. The project was scheduled to be released in 2014, but the production took a lot of time, and hence it got delayed for so long. Now the film is finally rescheduled to be released on Netflix in 2021.
The plot of the movie is set during the rise of fascism in Mussolini’s Italy. Pinocchio is a love story and struggles to live up to his father’s expectations.
Guillermo del Toro announced that Pinocchio was his next project in 2008, and it is the darker adaptation of the Italian novel The Adventure of Pinocchio. He said that Pinocchio is his passion project, he also said that no other art had influenced him and his work more than animation. And also he has not personally connected with any other character rather than Pinocchio. Then in 2011 Mark Gustafson and Gris Grimly joined the team as co-director. The film will be produced under ShadowMachine has been declared in 2012. Patrick McHale announced that he is co-writing Pinocchio with del Toro on 23rd January 2017. In an interview with indieWire at 74th Venice International Film Festival, del Toro shared that they would require a budget of $35 million to make the film. However, on 22nd October 2018, it was announced that the film was revived with Netflix.
On 31st January 2020, the production team announced its voice-over cast. The cast involves Christopher Waltz, Ron Perlman, Ewan McGregor, Tilda Swinton, David Bradley, Tom Waits, Daniel Radcliffe, and Christopher Walken. Recently, in August 2020 some more cast joined in the team including Time Blake Nelson, Cate Blanchett, Gregory Mann, Finn Wolfhard, John Turturro, and Burn Gorman.
Toro shared that he found the perfect partner for pursuing his dream project at Netflix. He added that he and his team had spent a lot of time curating a remarkable crew and cast and is blessed for the continuous support for Netflix. And he also believed that Netflix would be the perfect medium to share his classic story in a new way.
The principal photography started last autumn in Poland at ShadowMachine’s studio. And the production is uninterrupted during the pandemic COVID-19. Del Toro and Patrick McHale are co-writing the script together. The music is by the Oscar winner Alexandre Desplat, and Katz and del Toro write the song lyrics. Saunders and Mackinnon build the puppets for the film. Pinocchio is produced by Jim Henson Company’s Lisa Henson, del Toro, Corey Campodonico, and ShadowMachine’s Alex Bulkley. The project is co-produced by Blanca Lista of the Jim Henson Company and Gris Grimly.
Del Toro’s Pinocchio will be closer to the book. The character would be as real as they are in the book. However, Toro is setting the whole plot in the 1930s during the Italian fascist regime. He is known for making innovative and dark movies. So this time Pinnochio will be an official spin.
Robert Hunt is a self-professed security expert; he has been making the people aware of the security threats. His passion is to write about Cybersecurity, cryptography, malware, social engineering, internet, and new media. He writes for Norton security products at office.com/setup.

Oscars, Solar Orbiter & Mythic Quest
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone, we hope at the least you had a good evening snuggling up with your favourite movie.
Starting off this week, DJ tells us about the results of the latest Celebrity Worship Awards. Who won? Which actor is deserving of our endless praise? Buck and Professor are sceptical, but DJ jumps right in to tell us all about the Oscars.
Buck wants to leave the planet to escape the Oscars, so he’s been looking into the newest Solar Orbiter. This probe will be looking at the Sun’s poles. Maybe the weather is better away from the equator?
Professor has been binge watching Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet, the new television show from Ubisoft, Apple TV, and the team behind It’s Always Sunny. Professor might be geeking out a little about having the burdens and struggles of being a game developer shown on TV.
The Nerds talk about their games of the week, then finally we have the Shout outs, Remembrances, Birthdays and Events of Interest.  This week we’re recommending Epigraphy, a poetry podcast Buck hopes to take a shot at. Check back soon to find out if he can poet as well as he can podcast.

10 Febuary 2020 – Apple fined 0.002 per cent of its worth - https://www.news.com.au/technology/gadgets/mobile-phones/apple-fined-0002-per-cent-of-its-worth-for-slowing-down-everyones-phone-without-telling-them/news-story/3d799b2cc0ba7848455db0e38a5c90b3
France’s Directorate General of Competition, Consumption and Repression of Fraud (DGCCRF) found the lack of transparency displayed by Apple in the past breached its guidelines. The company was fined €25 million ($A41 million). Apple also “committed the crime of deceptive commercial practice by omission”. The consumer electronics giant is worth almost two trillion dollars, so the $41 million fine is unlikely to be felt too heavily. The fine is around 0.002 per cent of the company’s worth. If you were given a similar fine, it would only cost you about $20.

Events of Interest
10 February 1940 – Puss gets the boot : The first Tom and Jerry Cartoon .- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puss_Gets_the_Boot
It was directed by William Hanna,Joseph Barbera and Rudolf Ising, and produced by Rudolf Ising and Fred Quimby. As was the practice of MGM shorts at the time, only Rudolf Ising is credited. The short, Puss Gets the Boot, featured a cat named Jasper and an unnamed mouse, named Jinx in pre-production, and an African American housemaid named Mammy Two Shoes. Leonard Maltin described it as "very new and special [...] that was to change the course of MGM cartoon production" and established the successful Tom and Jerry formula of comical cat and mouse chases with slapstick gags. Matters changed, however, when Texas businesswoman Bessa Short sent a letter to MGM asking whether more cat and mouse shorts would be produced, which helped convince management to commission a series. A studio contest held to rename both characters was won by animator John Carr, who suggested Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse after the Christmas time drink. Carr was awarded a first-place prize of $50.
10 February 1957 – Attack Of The Crab Monsters clawed its way to theatres. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_of_the_Crab_Monsters
On this day in 1957, Attack Of The Crab Monsters made audiences afraid to go back into the water.  The feature starred Richard Garland and Pamela Duncan, and here's the plot summary: "Scientists become trapped on a shrinking island with intelligent, murderous giant crabs.”  Attack of the Crab Monsters was Corman's most profitable production up to that time, which he attributed to the "wildness of the title," the construction of the storyline, the structuring of every scene for horror and suspense, and editing for pace. Corman has stated that the success of the film convinced him that horror and humor was an effective combination.
10 February 1972 – Ziggy Stardust makes his earthly debut - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/ziggy-stardust-makes-his-earthly-debut
The concert at London’s Toby Jug pub a relatively minor rocker named David Bowie became the spaceman Ziggy Stardust. “I’m going to be huge,” is what David Bowie told Melody Maker less than three weeks earlier and still six months prior to the release of the albumThe Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. “And it’s quite frightening in a way, because I know that when I reach my peak and it’s time for me to be brought down it will be with a bump.”  That last bit may have been a case of Bowie confusing his Ziggy persona with real life, but that was what put the act over in the first place. Any rock musician can put on a costume, but how many could have inhabited the identity of an androgynous Martian rock star come to Earth in its dying days so convincingly, so effortlessly.
10 February 1996 – World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov loses game to computer. - https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/kasparov-loses-chess-game-to-computer
After three hours, world chess champion Garry Kasparov loses the first game of a six-game match against Deep Blue, an IBM computer capable of evaluating 200 million moves per second.  Man was ultimately victorious over machine, however, as Kasparov bested Deep Blue in the match with three wins and two ties and took home the $400,000 prize. An estimated 6 million people worldwide followed the action on the Internet. The February 1996 contest was significant in that it represented the first time a human and a computer had duked it out in a regulation, six-game match, in which each player had two hours to make 40 moves, two hours to finish the next 20 moves and then another 60 minutes to wrap up the game.

THE LAST POST
This is the last post of Follow The Thread.
I say that with a mixture of sadness and relief.  Over the course of three years, Elma and I have researched, curated and written 152 posts, covering nearly 900 films, documentaries and TV shows.
We did it because we loved it.  Each week we’d unearth a complex web of threads connecting current titles to the massive online library that we are all blessed to have at our fingertips.  Some of the connections were obvious, some were obscure.  Some resonant, some just fun.
The process was always delightful.  And, it was a tremendous amount of work.
But what I’ll especially miss are all the juicy and culty titles we would discover – or, in some cases, re-discover – in the course of our detective work.
So for this last post, I’ve pulled together a fast, long and extremely biased list of some of discoveries Elma and I have made over the last three years, stretching back to August 2014.
Thanks for reading.  Arrivaderci!                                                                                                               *Each title is followed by the date of the post*

L’Atalante (1932) 3/10/16 This was the last of seminal French director Jean Viggo’s four films.  He died in his wife’s arms a few days after the film’s disastrous release.  Now it’s beloved, the exceptionally simple story of a girl from a river town who impulsively marries a barge captain.
Labyrinthe (1986) 1/14/16 15-year-old Jennifer Connelly is a girl on the brink of womanhood whose fantasies come alive.  David Bowie is Jareth, the Ogre King, tempter and torturer in a glam rock wig and notoriously form-fitting tights. Cult fantasy collaboration from George Lucas and Jim (Muppet) Henson.

Control (2007) 6/4/15 This atypically moody rock n roll biopic about Ian Curtis, lead singer for Joy Division paints him as a doomed poet.  Impeccable performances by Sam Riley and Samantha Morton as his wife.  Black and white, directed by Joy Division photographer Anton Corbijn.
Maggie (2015) 5/7/15 Arnold Schwarzenegger gives an surprisingly excellent, dialed-back performance as a father whose daughter is infected with a zombie virus and faces unbearable.  Post-apocalyptic, but not an action film.
The Internet’s Own Boy: The Life of Aaron Schwartz (2014) 4/9/15 Digital-focused doc maker Brian Knappenberger hones on in programming prodigy Schwartz, who was instrumental in developing RSS, Creative Commons and Reddit, but was hounded to death after he successfully defeated the corporation-backed Stop Online Piracy Act.

The Music of Chance (1993) 2/5/15 James Spader donned a black wig and moustache to play a hustling gambler.  But it’s not what you think.  The director is Peter Haas who went on to do Angels and Insects.  Mandy Patinkin, Charles Durning, Joel Grey.
The Babadook (2014) 1/22/15 Mind-twisting Freudian study cloaked in a meticulously crafted horror film about a widowed mother and her troubled/troublesome 7-year-old, from first-time Aussie director Jennifer Kent.
Red Riding (2009) 1/15/15 A pre-breakout Andrew Garfield is outstanding in this unique UK TV project based on David Pearce’s serial killer novels.  Three novels, three films, three great directors, three years, three different looks (16mm; 35mm; digital) – all pulled together by screenwriter Tony Grisoni.
Headhunters (1991) 11/20/14 From director Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game) highest grossing Norwegian film ever.  A short and pathologically ambitious headhunter moonlights as an art thief to support his trophy wife.  Things go wrong.
Following (1998) 11/6/14 Great time to revisit Christopher Nolan’s first film.  A black and white low-budget creeper that interweaves three stories from three different time frames.
Brothers of the Head (2006) 10/8/14 Remarkably authentic and intentionally unfunny mockumentary by the makers of LOST IN LA MANCHA follows a pair of conjoined twins who become punk rockers in 1970’s England.
Ace in the Hole (1951) 9/25/14 Neglected and prescient film from Billy Wilder.  Kirk Douglas plays a corrupt, disgraced reporter who seizes an opportunity to go big when a smalltown man is trapped in a cave.  First time Wilder was writer, producer and director.
Stuck on You (2003) 9/18/14 Farrelly brothers cast Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear as conjoined twins who go to Hollywood.  Loaded with cameos – Cher, Nicholson, Leno, Streep.
The Devil’s Backbone (2001) 9/4/14 Early Guillermo de Toro evolving his signature mix of tenderness and phantasm.  Gothic horror set in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War.
Dark City (1998) 8/21/14 A man struggles with memories of his past, including a wife he cannot remember. Brilliant gothic labyrinth from Alex Proyas (The Crow; I, Robot).

“The ballroom had known opulence. Between glittering cornices were hung many long chandeliers where the wax, dripping for a hundred years, had formed stalactites. The silk covering of the walls had faded and, in places, worn threadbare. Bubbles decorated the room, and the whole of it was contained within the iridescent skin of one great bubble. A tall, gilt, thirteen-hour clock stood in a corner. It was almost twelve o’clock.”

Toyota, 1917 & Google Stadia
Well, here we come, waltzing down the street, getting hot and sweaty, with all this humidity. Hey hey we’re the Nerds yeah, and people say we look kind of funny, particularly Buck the big Boomer. Haha, admit it, you started to sing that in to the Monkey’s theme tune didn’t you, if not you just went back and tried it. We this week we bring you another awesome episode to listen to while you rest in the shade and enjoy a breeze on the long weekend.
First up we are taking flight with Buck, Toyota, and Joby. No, Joby is not a new host, it is an aviation company that Toyota is investing in to increase its presence in the transport arena. Also this is the next step to having vehicles like in the Jetsons. Check out the drawings in the link, a tilt-engine vehicle that looks like a cross between a drone and a helicopter. This is seriously cool. Also while looking around at all the different transport tech news Buck also found some artists renderings of potential vehicles for space travel from Lexus. Wait till you hear what Buck and Professor think one of them looks like. Which is your favorite option?
Next up DJ has a story about the Producers Guild Awards, in particular 1917. Want to know what movies won which awards, listen in. Also you can hear about the movie 1917, with some of the various story plot points to look out for. For those unfamiliar with it 1917 is a movie set in World War One. It is the story of a soldier and his friend trying to save the lives of 1600 British troops. There are some funny parts, but it is a moving drama based on stories told by the Grand Father of the Director Sam Mendes. DJ has also asked for your predictions for the Oscars and who you think should be nominated and win, so let us know on either: Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
Next up we have Professor bringing us an update on the saga of Crytek and CIG (Star Citizen). Would you believe that so far CIG have spent over $900,000 on this legal matter? Yep, for the company started on kickstarter and now sells space fleets for $27000 they are really going hard. Want to know what has happened then listen in. As usual we have all the shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and events of interest. Until next week, please remember to take care of yourselves, look out for each other, and stay hydrated.

Shout Outs
- 21 January 2020 – Terry Jones - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Jones
Terry Jones died on 21 January 2020 from complications of dementia at his home in Highgate, north London. Jones was a Welsh actor, writer, comedian, screenwriter, film director and historian. He was a member of the Monty Python comedy team.
After graduating from Oxford University with a degree in English, Jones and writing partner Michael Palin (whom he met at Oxford) wrote and performed for several high-profile British comedy programmes, including Do Not Adjust Your Set and The Frost Report, before creating Monty Python's Flying Circus with Cambridge graduates Eric Idle, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, and American animator/filmmaker Terry Gilliam. Jones was largely responsible for the programme's innovative, surreal structure, in which sketches flowed from one to the next without the use of punchlines. He made his directorial debut with the team's film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which he co-directed with Gilliam, and also directed the subsequent Python films Life of Brian and The Meaning of Life.
Jones co-created and co-wrote with Palin the anthology series Ripping Yarns. He also wrote an early draft of Jim Henson's 1986 film Labyrinth, though little of his work remained in the final cut. Jones was a well-respected medieval historian, having written several books and presented television documentaries about the period, as well as a prolific children's book author. In 2016, Jones received a Lifetime Achievement award at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his outstanding contribution to television and film. After living for several years with a degenerative aphasia, he gradually lost the ability to speak and died on 21 January 2020 from frontotemporal dementia.

As a writer, Orwell produced literary criticism and poetry, fiction and polemical journalism; and is best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949). In 2008, The Times ranked George Orwell second among "The 50 greatest British writers since 1945".
Orwell's work remains influential in popular culture and in political culture, and the adjective "Orwellian" – describing totalitarian and authoritarian social practices – is part of the English language, like many of his neologisms, such as "Big Brother", "Thought Police", and "Hate week", "Room 101", the "memory hole", and "Newspeak", "doublethink" and "proles", "unperson" and "thoughtcrime".
