deep in the woods of quebec, canadian firm appareil architecture has built a black house with a matching smaller cabin, linked together with outdoor decking.
the two units are linked by cedar decking, which is raised above the forest floor. the deck off the main house can be used to entertaining and grilling, while a dock-like pathway runs around to the ancillary building.
the region has dense forests over its peaks and flatlands, and includes lake memphremagog – a freshwater glacial lake that spans both countries. "this experience of the terrain, from the very start, allowed us to seize all the potential of the different ambiances that were present," the firm said.
"the owners wanted a warm space, fit to host family and friends, in harmony with the environment, a space that breathes fresh air and replenishment," said the firm.

And the Tall Tales Continue to be Told -- Linda Knight Seccaspina
Memphre, the monster, is probably the oldest Eastern Townships story ever talked about. Yet these stories are part of my life as I believe in fairies, sea monsters and things that go bump in the night. In 2021 I wrote a story about an early morning in 1972 when I was staying at a motel that faces Lake Memphremagog, Quebec. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of Memphre, the legendary sea beast that…

THE VERMONT MONSTER GUIDE by Joseph A. Citro with illustrations by Stephen R. Bissette.
I love monster guidebooks, so when I read about this tome I immediately had to track down a copy.
With its extensive forest, glacier-rounded hills, and deep, dark lakes, it’s not surprising that Vermont is allegedly home to a multitude of strange, unknown beasts. Monster investigator Citro and renowned comic artis Bisette delve deep into the folklore and urban legends of the Green Mountain State to bring these creatures to life with writing and illustrations that are as lurid and sensational as pulpy 19th century newspapers breathlessly relating the horrors menacing backwoods folk.
Some of the featured monsters are familiar- Champ, Bigfoot, the Fur-Bearing Trout. Others are more obscure, like the trash-eating Pigman, Memphre of cold, glacial Lake Memphremagog, and the Man-Eating Stone of Glastonbury Mountain. There’s also a sizeable pack of creatures known from single encounters, such as Steggy the hump-backed critter, or the “Long-Leggedy Cats” of Burlington.
Bisette has a long history of comic book work, including Saga of the Swamp Thing, and Tyrant, the latter a story about the life of a Tyrannosaurus from the moment of birth. He also co-created the comic character John Constantine. Joseph Citro is a long-time collector of New England oddball stories. Their guide to things mysterious and monstrous of Vermont is perfect for any fan of cryptids and local legends.
Also in this post- my own illustration of the Pigman enjoying a light breakfast.

maggie! my sister and I are planning a road trip to canada this summer so as a canadian, anything you recommend doing, any absolute must sees?
!!! Oooh, have fun!
I can only really give concrete recommendations for Quebec and southern Ontario, and the later with less than a year of experience - so if you're headed to the prairies or BC I'm not much help.
For Québec:
If you stick to Montreal and the touristy areas, you lively won't need all that much French! Usually people clock that you're a tourist and will switch to English if they can. Less likely the farther you get from Montreal and the Townships.
Goes without saying, try a good poutine (There’s an invisible S in there, we pronounce it more like.. poutsine lmao)! Don't get it from a big chain except maybe Belle Province or Poutineville, the very best I've had have usually been from lil cantines. If they’re not using fresh cheese curds don't trust em.
Also Beaver Tails (a fried pastry brand). Usually have lil kiosks near events and sinfully good. My brother and I go bonkers for them.
In Montreal proper, I'd recommend a walk on Mt.Royal! I forget if the inside skating rink at Atwater is still available this time of year, but might be worth looking into. Vieux Montréal is a nice place to romp around, especially around the canals and the Atwater market. Avoid driving in and around MTL it's a living hell, move around by bus or metro(subway) if you can, you can get day passes easy enough. St.Catherine and Mt.Royal streets usually have fun stores and restaurants to poke around in, and the gay village is great! I'm pretty sure most amusement parks in the USA are bigger than La Ronde, so don't waste your time with it.
Zoo de Granby is one I went to a lot as a child and they do great conservation work and have beautiful exhibits + a fun water park! Bromont is great for winter fun, but wrong time of year, and their water park can be hit or miss.
Both Bromont and Sutton are great for hiking (I have good memories of getting up to a lake on Mt.Sutton just as the mist revealed it, so cool). Apparently so is Owl's Head, but I've only skii'd there. Bromont is expensive and the cops are real sticklers, Sutton is a lot smaller and personally I think more cute and chill.
Lac Brome/Lake Brome is just about the most anglophone place in the province outside of Montreal! You can do a lot of kayaking, boating and even just driving around the lake is nice. It is a tourist town with its businesses catered towards Montrealers weekending there, so everything is closed Mon/Tues but open over weekends. Just a very cute and anglophone town.
Memphremagog / Magog is both an okay town and a really great lake, bigger than Lac Brome if you'd rather get on the water there. Also fun local myths of a lake monster >:3c
If you like murder mysteries, Louise Penny based many locations in her series off of areas in the Townships - such as Brome Lake Books('s old location) and Abbey St.Benoit (which has great cheese). There are maps to help her fans run around and see the locations irl!
Due to the dairy industry there's a lot of great cheese and icecream in general. Coaticook has great icecream and a cool gorge (my ex lived there), but it’s very French so you might have trouble.
A personal highlight: drive up the St.Lawrence. it's gorgeous, sometimes there are whales, and just. Amazingly beautiful. Fuckoff cold water tho.
There are a ton if beautiful national parks in Quebec; Bic is a highlight personally.
For southern Ontario:
Niagara Falls is a mixed bag: the falls themselves are incredible, absolutely awe inspiring (I remember getting to my hotel room after and writing in a frenzy - the MIST from them hits you SEVERAL HUNDRED METERS AWAY). BUT the area around them are a tourist trap, overpriced and iffy.
I haven't run around Toronto much beyond getting lost going to n from the airport, but I've heard decent enough things?
Iirc there might be more Freedom Convoy bullshit going on in Ottawa, so keep an eye on the news if it's on your bucket list.
Also have heard p good things about the national parks, almost went camping with the other grads before schedule conflicts popped up.
Haven't done much due to gradschool unfortunately :c
I also know that Alberta has an incredible dinosaur museum with some amazing specimens, and Dinosaur Provincial Park is teaming with big fossils (almost went on a dig there but Covid happened).
Hope some of this helped!

Day 14 – Eastman to Magog – 35 km
Trail: uphill and downhill with steep inclines and declines; 8 km paved, 27 km unpaved; A
Tumblr media
Last night I stayed at La Maison Jaune de Eastman on Lac d’Argent. It was a clean and comfortable room in a home with private entrance and bathroom. The setting was beautiful and the hosts provided kayaks and bikes. Highly recommended.
Tumblr media
A nod to Eastman's literary heritage.
I sat in a café for over an hour hoping that the rain would let up. It didn’t. After checking the weather I saw that it would rain all day and the temperature would also fall. I thought of my friend Pep from Spain who would say “I am a pilgrim, the rain won’t hurt me”, and off I went.
Tumblr media
Trail conditions were very good, with the addition of a 2 streams created from the heavy constant rain, 1 on each side of the trail. Periodically the streams were punctuated with ponds or rivers crossing over the complete trail.
Tumblr media
Danger signs should have been at the base of each incline because if anything was going to kill me it was the steep ascents. The decline signs should have read “Wheeeee”.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I traveled through hilly forests with lakes sprinkled along the way. I saw a people walking and a couple joggers, but no other bikers. Most people seemed to know enough to stay inside, out of the rain.
Tumblr media
Google was optimistic in it’s description of the trail, “mostly flat”. Google’s disclaimer “Use caution – bicycling directions may not always reflect real-world conditions” applied. The first third of the ride was up and down, up and down, but mostly up. The last 2/3 of the trail continued to be up and down but generally descending, which was more enjoyable. The last 2 days were physically challenging and, for the record, I never walked my bike up any hill.
Magog is at 200 m elevation and Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré is almost sea level. It should be an easy downhill from here on.
I was hoping for some amazing views today (the summit was 365 m / 1200 ft elevation but the rain and fog made it difficult to see much.
Tumblr media
It was a shame that I had to use my brakes so frequently on the declines. They were often steep, muddy, and with sharp corners. It just felt so wasteful. I wanted to go downhill fast, but there was a real risk of getting a really big ouchy.
If I hadn't been relaxing and enjoying a fast downhill ride on pavement, I would have seen a shortcut to the right, less than a kilometre outside of the park. The shortcut would have cut out the Orford loop, saving about 3.5 km.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I arrived in Magog soggy and hungry. I had lunch. The rain didn’t let up so I didn’t get to see much of this pretty town on Lac Memphremagog.
I got a flat tire 3 blocks from my B&B. An easy walk in the rain. It’s my lucky day.

30 Most Remote Places To Visit In The United States
If you’re planning to explore some of the most remote places in the US and like getting off the USA beaten path (or maybe just looking for an unpopular honeymoon destination), you’re at the right place! In this post, we’ll share some of the most isolated places in the US where one can immerse in nature and its spectacular beauty while being miles away from what we like to refer to as civilization…
Owl’s Head, Vermont
Tumblr media
Even before becoming its own state, Vermont has always been considered as backcountry and a great getaway destination for people from Massachusetts and things haven’t changed much through the year. Vermont is still one of the least visited states in the US despite the abundance of lush forests, scenic trekking routes, and incredible landscapes.
Perhaps one of the most picturesque areas in Vermont is Owl’s Head Mountain and its summit, where you can get incredible views of Lake Memphremagog and Vermont.
Sounds interesting? Then you may want to check out our full article here: Most Isolated Places In The US

【活到盡故事】捐出了一個小島,只為保護它的生命
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
他很希望自己所做的,能啟迪後人,或給予後人一點反思, "If they have time to give, to volunteer, if they have a few dollars, to donate, or if they have a property, whatever is within their means."

September 1 2021 Newport Vermont
Tumblr media
On our last day in Newport on our Sisters’ Retreat we continued exploring the roots of our past in this lovely little community.  We found an entrance to the walking and bike trail which goes to Canada called the Beebe Spur Rail Trail, . also known as the Newport--Beebe Bike Path because a very kind man allowed us to park in his yard and walk from there.  According to its website:
“The Beebe Spur Rail Trail makes a level run along the eastern shore of Lake Memphremagog to Vermont’s border with Canada. At less than 4 miles, the distance isn’t taxing, although the gravel surface can make for a challenging bicycle ride without wide tires. At the north end, travelers who want to cross into Canada need to take a 1.5-mile detour and carry a passport.
The trail’s name is derived from the historic community of Beebe Plain, which straddles the US–Canada border; a mid-19th-century post office served both countries from opposite ends of the building. The town served as a railroad connection between a branch of the Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad, completed in 1867 and Canada’s Massawippi Valley Railway, built in 1870. The Quebec Central Railway took control of the line in 1926. A subsequent owner, Canadian Pacific Railway, discontinued use on the line in 1990 and removed the tracks in 1992.The Beebe Spur Rail Trail follows that old Connecticut and Passumpsic Rivers Railroad line from Newport to the border, while the 19-kilometer (11.8-mile) Sentier Nature Tomifobia uses the Massawippi Valley Railway corridor in Canada.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the walk we drove to one of the highest points in Newport on Shattuck Hill Road for a great view of the lake.  We found a beautiful old farmhouse which was for sale and fantasized about buying it to create a women’s retreat and avoid it being broken into parcels and sold for houses, which would benefit only a few wealthy families.  But, unfortunately, we don’t have the money or time, at least now, for such an endeavor.  It was fun, though, imagining doing something so ambitious together.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We went back into the center of town to buy sandwiches at the natural foods store and then we drove out to find the farm where our family lived before we left Newport to move to Massachusetts when I was five.  We had visited it before so we used the memories of that search to find the farm out on Vance Hill Road in a part of Newport called “Strawberry Acres”.
Tumblr media
Trust me, the farm didn’t look like this when we lived here.  The most recent owners put a lot of money into a major remodel and it is probably worth a LOT of money now, especially given the views of the lake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We ate our sandwiches on a knoll above the house and marveled at the beauty of our home town.  We felt so blessed to have had this opportunity to take this trip together and to enjoy each others’ company without the distraction of work and other responsibilities.  We’ll always remember the fun we had together, just the three of us.

Day 15 – Magog to Sherbrooke – 32 km
Trail: moderate hills; 139 m up, 199 m down; 17 km paved, 15 km unpaved; A
I had a change of plans. Originally I was going to stay in Sherbrooke for 2 night's, resting one day. On the advice of an "in the know" waiter in Granby I decided to stay one night in Magog and one night in Sherbrooke. Unfortunately, it was raining when I arrived and since Magog is an outdoorsy town, I didn't have much of an opportunity to partake in local activities.
Tumblr media
I stayed at À L’Ancestrale B&B in Magog. The home was clean and the bed comfortable. The host was incredible. She had tea when I arrived, an excellent and filling breakfast, and as if that wasn’t enough, she gave me a dry place to work on my bike. Oh, and then to top it off, while I was fixing my tire, she came out with a large bag lunch, at least half the size of my already full bike pack. Highly recommended.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are plenty of boathouses along the Magog River and an electrical power plant.
Tumblr media
Magog is on Lake Memphremagog and activities are heavily based around the water such as boating, sailing, kayaking, eating & drinking, swimming, sun bathing, biking, walking. I would definitely give this town 3 days in the future. It may be a real gem.
I started the day by repairing my flat tire. I found a 2-3 mm thorn that had poked through the tire and punctured the tube. I removed it, replaced the tube and away I went, but not before the host got out an air compressor to properly inflate my tire.
Tumblr media
Leaving Magog, I was faced with a detour. After taking surface streets back to the trail, I realized the TCT was in better condition than Quebec roads. Keep up the good work on the trails!
Tumblr media
Even though I ended the day at a lower elevation, the trail was up and down. Not like the past two days where the trail was more like a “scream like a little girl” kind of roller coaster. Today, the trail was much more like long gentle hills, climbing for a km or so and then downhill for a km or so. The ride was fun. I just smiled all the way down the hills.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I arrived in Sherbrooke in the afternoon. After the detour and then missing a trail marker (La Route Verte forked to the right at l'Eglise St-Roch in Rock Forest while the TCT continued straight ahead) I rode an additional 13 km, so it took longer than planned. Sherbrooke is the city of "too many hills". I took my bike and coasted to a restaurant in 10 minutes and it took me almost 30 minutes to get back. It’s at the confluence of the Magog and St. Francis rivers, a university town with large building murals, waterfront activities, and a very cool train station microbrewery/restaurant - Siboire.
Tumblr media
It’s also home to the massive Petites Sœurs de la Ste-Famille Convent.
