The Difference Between Arabic and Turkish Ouds
You may have heard of Arabic or Turkish ouds. But what exactly is the difference between these two types of ouds? Read on to learn about the differences between these two types and their respective properties. And then, decide whether you want to purchase an Arabic oud or a Turkish oud. Listed below are a few things to consider when you're shopping for an oud for sale. This article also covers what makes each type of oud special. Turkish oud When you're looking for a Turkish Oud for sale, you'll need to consider its tone and size. The Turkish Oud is the most popular choice, as it is played in North African and Near Eastern music. This lute is typically made with 11 or 12 strings, with five double-courses. These instruments are well-known for their low string action, which allows musicians to play them comfortably. The low action also gives the oud an easy-flowing feel. The Turkish Oud features eleven strings, with 10 of them paired up and the lowest string remaining single. The peg box is bent back at 45 to 90 degrees. The Turkish Oud also has 1-3 sound holes, which are oval or circular and symbolize the celestial bodies. This instrument is made with all-natural wood and is perfect for any level of player. It also features a decorative fingerboard and pickup. Its low-string action makes it easier to play, while its bright, mellow tone makes it a perfect accent piece for any home. Arabic oud While the exact location of the origin of the Arabic oud is unknown, it is one of the oldest musical instruments in the world. The Arabic oud is one of the earliest string instruments, dating back to around 3,000 BC in northern Syria. The instrument looks similar to a lute, but plays very differently, having eleven strings instead of 10. Although it has a similar appearance, each type has a unique energy. Learn more about the difference between these two instruments, as well as how to spot a quality one. When buying an oud, the first thing to do is to research the instruments. Find out the origin of the instrument. Ouds come from different regions of the world, including North Africa, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, and Turkey. A good place to start is a YouTube search for ouds. Listening to these musical instruments will help you make an informed decision on what type to purchase. In the end, you will have an excellent instrument to play for years to come. Egyptian oud
youtube
If you're searching for a fine quality Egyptian oud for sale, then the DarubukaPlanet collection is the right place to start. Their collection contains the best makers, including Gawharet El Fan and El-Masry. The Oud, a fretless stringed instrument, is unique in appearance and sound, and each of these instruments comes with a gigbag for safe transportation. The Turkish Oud is easy to spot. Its fingerboard and soundboard are flush with each other, making it easy to identify. Most Turkish Ouds have a tiny ornament on the soundboard, which looks like an extension of the fingerboard. Some Turkish Ouds have the same ornament, but not all. Luxury Oud instrument They are slightly smaller than their Arabic counterparts, measuring approximately 58.5 cm from bridge to nut. They also have fewer strings, which makes them more versatile. Synthetic oud If you're considering buying Oud for your perfume or cologne, you may be wondering how to tell if it's genuine or synthetic. The price range for Oud is huge, with high-grade Kyara costing upwards of $1000 per ounce. A good synthetic equivalent, however, is much cheaper. The difference between the two comes down to the process used to create the oil. Let's take a closer look. First, we'll cover the differences between natural and synthetic Oud. Natural Oud is rarer and more expensive than synthetic versions, and the most expensive ones are harvested by barefoot virgins in the Laotian mountains. However, the higher price does not always translate into quality. A good synthetic will cost a few bucks, but probably not double as much. Luckily, there are a number of synthetic alternatives.

Areej Le Dore Malik al Taif
Tumblr media
Notes: Taif rose; Indian oudh, saffron, deer musk; Laotian oudh, Cambodian oudh, sandalwood, benzoin, amber
Areej le Doré Malik al Taif is a traditional Arabic rose-oud composition with high-quality materials. There’s a very high dose of the famed Taif rose, which on me came out extremely lemony at first, almost like lemon Pledge. It took a full half hour before it blossomed into a tender, pink-petalled, faintly rosewater-like scent, with just the faintest buzz of musk and smokiness beneath, and a still quite persistent citrusy flavor. It wasn’t the bright red jammy rose I was expecting; far more subtle and delicate, though quite diffusive.
In the second hour, the amber and sandalwood come out, adding sweetness and producing a tender warm “second movement” I like a lot.
In the third hour, I get more of the oud; it’s smoky, tangy, delicately animalic, and, to me, quite beautiful.
In the fourth hour, the golden sweetness returns, this time with a bit of vanilla, and Malik al Taif is a mellow, warm, slightly spicy, sandalwood-and-amber scent again, with just a hint of smoky-funky oudh.
Unlike classical French perfumery, which offers a swirl of dozens of notes, and usually gives me at least a preview of the base notes right away, Malik al Taif (and maybe classical Arabic perfumery in general?) has fewer elements, and separates cleanly into four separate stages without much overlap.
I would say I love stages 2/4 and 3 — the poignantly sweet amber-sandalwood and the subtle, elegantly smoky oudh — but I find stage 1, the lemony rose, something I respect more than I love.
Taif rose is a Damascena varietal, originally brought to Arabia from Turkey. While Rosa damascena normally has a jammy, ruby-red tonality, the particular terroir of Taif makes the same species of roses come out powerfully citrusy and green, almost not like a rose at all. This distinctive scent is prized among perfumers, but it can be a bit of a “love it or hate it” thing. I find it a little hard to handle.
This is a top quality example of its genre, and I think it’s unisex — it smells like roses, sandalwood, and oudh, not like “men” or “women”.

Best in house: Mona di Orio
Tumblr media
Mona di Orio is a niche house based in the Netherlands that has released a solid lineup of tasteful, complex and beguiling fragrances. It was founded in 2004 by the late di Orio with her co-founder, the designer Jeroen Oude Sogtoen. After di Orio’s sudden passing in 2011, Fredrik Dalman took over as in-house perfumer. Here is a list of my favourites from this house.
Cuir. I’m fairly choosy when it comes to leather fragrances and Cuir is one of my favourites. It’s a little butch and smoky with a touch of toasted nuttiness but remains poised. It’s tough yet supple. Brutal yet tender. One of those special fragrances that does not lose its intrigue with daily wear.
Vanille. I normally dislike vanilla fragrances but adore Vanille. Far from the cloying, saccharine scents I associate with this note, Vanille is aromatic, almost green in its opening before taking you on a rich, dry and spicy come down.
Oudh Osmanthus. The mellow sweetness of osmanthus is paired perfectly with a purring Laotian oud. Elegant and wearable with a touch of animalistic warmth. Wears on the skin like a light cashmere shawl.
Santal Nabataea. Santal Nabataea is easily one of the most gorgeous sandalwoods I’ve ever had the pleasure of smelling. It makes the popular Tam Dao smell like plastic, Santal 33 like laundry detergent. Its aromatic, dusty opening is intoxicating and its soothing dry down evokes both dry and milky facets of real Mysore sandalwood. The first time I smelled this, I immediately remembered a fragrant sandalwood fan I had as a child that I had long forgotten about, that’s how true to life it is. If you think you don’t like sandalwood but you’ve never smelled this, you are wrong.
I should also note here that Mona di Orio’s older fragrances are not crowdpleasers. While they are not provocative or loud, they have a bold voice. I would definitely recommend at least trying her animalistic Signature Collection, as well as the rest of the Monogram line. The ingredients are high quality, the vision is unique.

Sensory Awakenings With The Top Most Men’s Colognes
There’s no sense as powerful and evocative as smell. The best men’s colognes are not just the perfect final touch to your outfit. They also carry emotional significance. Fragrances can convey a million moods—from relaxation and playfulness to authority and power. This is why choosing the right men’s cologne for you is so important.
Tumblr media
To ensure you put out the right olfactory signals, here’s a rundown of the 51 best men’s colognes of all time—whether you need a fresh fragrance for everyday use or something dramatic and daring for those special moments.
Not to mention date nights. After all, it’s been scientifically proven that women have a better sense of smell than men. It’s time to make a lasting impression.
Gucci Guilty is the anti-conformist, hedonistic, and extravagant fragrance that every bad-boy has been waiting for. It would suit any out and proud Casanova or pleasure-seeker.
Think intense and spicy pink pepper and citrusy lemon top notes followed by heart notes of orange blossom—impossibly seductive and romantic—alongside neroli and French lavender. Finally, patchouli, wrapping you up in its woody incense-like aroma, followed by ultra-masculine cedarwood.
The vibe is modern, exotic, and incredibly intense. Just as the name suggests, Gucci Guilty is an exquisitely guilty pleasure.
Creed delivers decadent fragrances that are favourites of celebrities such as George Clooney and Robert Redford. This is the scent for a natural-born leader. Think big, act bold.
Inspired by the courage and heroism of Emperor Napoleon, Creed Aventus is full of energy and totally fearless—a scent that certainly makes its presence known.
Contemporary and street-wise, Creed Aventus’ men fragrance opens with the natural performers that are pineapple, blackcurrant, apple, and bergamot. These combine with heart notes like juniper berries and patchouli, while dusky base notes call the final shots with musk and oakmoss.
If you could bottle enigma, it would probably smell something like this.
This Oud Silk Mood fragrance was designed as a sort of olfactory bridge between east and west—Orient and Occident. Beginning with notes of Italian bergamot and Moroccan blue chamomile, it develops into the sensual aromas of Bulgarian rose, hedione, and guaiac wood. Closing with a serious flourish are the woody scents of Laotian oud and Indian papyrus.
The overall mood is light and breezy with a hint of mystery.

The scent of ... volatility?
Today, I'm reviewing BTC pour Homme by Aroma Concepts. Turns out #bitcoin smells pretty darn good. I live for finding these quirky scent concepts. From a collector's perspective it also feels representative of our times.
BTC pour Homme is a pleasant spicy, smoky leathery fragrance. There is apparently real Laotian oud in here which may explain the modest 30ml bottle while all the other scents on the aroma concepts site are more in the 100ml range. It's pretty hard to parse which notes are top, middle and base notes based on how they are listed on the site but here they are anyway. Let me know if you've tried this one!

Hello friends, i know you smell amazing, so share whatcha wearing in the comments ! For me i am wearing something a bit particular and perhaps strange. This is called Sapincence Figoudative by @woudacieux_haute_parfumerie ! This red fruit and unique aromatic fragrance is complex with dark incense. Red algae gives a mellow oakmoss like appeal and cashmere adds fullness too. Costus adds a bit of a sour camphor vibe in the background and there is just so much going on with this brand and this fragrance. I like this is dark and fruity and like a chypre, but somehow silky to make it more wearable. Some might find this challenging, but if you are deep into niche , this might be fun. This is sultry, seductive and intense , nothing playful here. I get 8 to 9 hours longevity with just good performance. This is more of what i wanted from the house of amouage honestly. So do you like more complex or simple fragrances ? Do you like more understandable or challenging fragrance ? - TOP NOTES: Russian Valerian~Sardinian Fig~Oman Boswellia Carterii~Red Algea HEART NOTES: Myanmar Mysore Sandal~Norwegian Black Spruce~Cashmere Accord BASE NOTES: Nigerian Costus Accord~Ebony Wood~Laotian White Oud~Tolu Balsam - #fragrance #clashfragrances #fragrancecommunity #scentaur #scentiooriginal #scentsyaddict #nicheperfumerie #nicheperfumes #nicheperfumebrand https://www.instagram.com/p/CW1qhC1rKLS/?utm_medium=tumblr

Scents of the Season: Winter Edition
Tumblr media
Winter is upon us and having a new perfume, or two, in your arsenal is a great way to add to your wardrobe this season. The amazing thing about fragrances is that they differ based on individual body chemistry. Each bottle is unique because the same perfume might smell completely different from person to person.
Perfume connoisseurs know that choosing a perfume is beautifully intimate. When choosing a new scent remember that top, base and medium notes will all present differently over time; don’t sleep on a new fragrance just because of one ingredient. Top notes are light scents that you typically smell first. Base notes are usually stronger with a bold feel that lingers after application. Medium notes are the notes that bring everything together. Knowing the notes and how they develop is a great guide, but don’t be afraid to shake things up this holiday season.
Tumblr media
Byredo–Tobacco Mandarin
Byredo founder Ben Gorham launched the brand in Sweden in 2006. Looking to render memories into scents, the brand has mastered the craft of iconic perfumes. The newest scent is a contrasting blend of citrus and spice; the bottle itself makes this new fragrance to-die-for. Top notes of mandarin, coriander and cumin opening to heart notes of creamy leather and smoky tobacco on top of base notes of oud and sandalwood render this earthy fragrance a must-have for your winter 2020 perfume collection.
Tumblr media
Calvin Klein–Deep Euphoria
Love Calvin Klein’s classic fragrances? The newest gem in the Euphoria crown is Deep Euphoria; part of Calvin Klein’s award-winning fragrance line launched in 2005. Dark purple packaging with light accents gives the perfume a mysterious feel that blurs the lines between fantasy and reality and day and night. Notes of rose, musk, mandarin leaf, pepper, patchouli and white peony give the fragrance a slightly younger feel than its earlier predecessors. The brand describes the newest fragrance in terms of the powerful women they crafted it for, “Calvin Klein women are confident, provocative and released, and Deep Euphoria woman embodies all these aspects with an additional layer of adventure.”
Tumblr media
D.S. & Durga–Notorious Oud
Want to switch up your signature scent but want it to still smell like you? If your favorite perfume is oud based, then look no further than this sensual new fragrance. Classic oud is taking a new form in  D.S. & Durga’s ‘Notorious Oud’ eau de parfum. Made in Brooklyn, New York, this fragrance is incredibly international with notes of North African papyrus, Indonesian oud, Afghan saffron and Bulgarian rose. Top notes of saffron and white galbanum open to middle notes of oud and rose, with base notes of papyrus making this perfume a vacation in a bottle.
Tumblr media
Maison Francis Kurkdjian–Oud Extrait de Parfum
This rich perfume is an exotic journey with spicy, vanilla and musky accords. An unconventional blend of precious natural ingredients with top notes of saffron, a heart of musky vanilla and a base of Laotian oud and Indonesian patchouli. These international ingredients are rare and highly coveted giving this spicy and rich oud-based fragrance high longevity and serious mystery.
Tumblr media
Lancome–Idôle
Winter fragrances don’t have to be deep and woodsy. Lancome’s new Idôle fragrance is sophisticated yet fresh and modern. Key notes of jasmine, rose, citrus and white musk are layered over a vanilla base. This floral scent is made from sustainably and ethically sourced ingredients, so it is an indulgence perfume aficionados can feel good about. Another signature feature of Idôle is that Lancome has invented the world’s thinnest fragrance bottle.
Tom Ford– Bitter Peach
It is hard to rank Tom Ford perfumes because they continue to outdo themselves. Exotic fruits, intoxicating florals and a fun vintage colored glass bottle. Bitter Peach is no exception to what is becoming the Tom Ford Fragrance rule – exceptional quality and unique scents that make heads turn. Not your typical winter scent, this fruity-floral fragrance has key notes of peach, davana and patchouli. Tom Ford describes the fragrance as, “Explicitly sweet and dangerously voluptuous, Bitter Peach surges with dark, skin-gripping sensuality. Like the full-flavored fruit at its most ripe, the scent is erotic by nature.”

Lao Oud (extrait de parfum) Bortnikoff
Woody amber
I have made many compositions with oud: each of them has its unique character. However, the note of oud in my fragrances had never been so powerful and animalic before the release of the new Lao Oud. Six months ago, a magnificent oil from Laos fell into my hands: it smelled of honey and flowers with a characteristic animal note.
I have been lucky enough to visit Laos more than 20 times. This is a beautiful small and hospitable country, where time seems to have stopped at the end of the 19th century. Therefore, remembering numerous trips to Laos, I almost immediately found the main harmonies for the composition, which was based on the oil of Lao oud. This oil smells extremely close to Indian, but it is much softer. I supplemented it with the notes of beautiful Lao coffee, frangipani flowers, the smell of incense that comes from many ancient monasteries in Laos, and fresh spices — cinnamon and pink pepper. So the new Lao Oud appeared — a walk through Vientiane, an ancient city on the Mekong River — the most oudy, and coffee-like animalic fragrance in the Bortnikoff Parfums collection.
Top notes: Pink pepper, Magnolia Heart notes: Beeswax, Cinnamon, Chamomile, Peru balsam, Cacao Base notes: Laotian oud, Tonka bean, Crocodile wood, Coffee, Indian oud, Vanilla, Birch tar, Guaiacwood

++ TELL-TALE HEART
Story by Edgar Allan Poe, art by Drew Rausch, scents by Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab and Black Phoenix Trading Post.
VERY, VERY DREADFULLY NERVOUS HAIR GLOSS TRUE! -- nervous -- very, very dreadfully nervous I had been and am; but why will you say that I am mad? A proclamation of sanity: a dignified bay rum cologne and a hint of respectable lime aftershave, pierced through by glittering shards of madness.
A DARK LANTERN ATMOSPHERE SPRAY And every night, about midnight, I turned the latch of his door and opened it -- oh so gently! And then, when I had made an opening sufficient for my head, I put in a dark lantern, all closed, closed, that no light shone out, and then I thrust in my head. Oh, you would have laughed to see how cunningly I thrust it in! I moved it slowly -- very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man's sleep. It took me an hour to place my whole head within the opening so far that I could see him as he lay upon his bed. Ha! would a madman have been so wise as this, And then, when my head was well in the room, I undid the lantern cautiously - oh, so cautiously -- cautiously (for the hinges creaked) -- I undid it just so much that a single thin ray fell upon the vulture eye. And this I did for seven long nights -- every night just at midnight --but I found the eye always closed; and so it was impossible to do the work; for it was not the old man who vexed me, but his Evil Eye. And every morning, when the day broke, I went boldly into the chamber, and spoke courageously to him, calling him by name in a hearty tone, and inquiring how he has passed the night. So you see he would have been a very profound old man, indeed, to suspect that every night, just at twelve, I looked in upon him while he slept.
Midnight observations and false cheer: moon-shrouded indigo musk illuminated by a thin, wavering amber light, punctuated with erratic bursts of neroli’s sharp affability.
MY SECRET DEEDS HAIR GLOSS Upon the eighth night I was more than usually cautious in opening the door. A watch's minute hand moves more quickly than did mine. Never before that night had I felt the extent of my own powers -- of my sagacity. I could scarcely contain my feelings of triumph. To think that there I was, opening the door, little by little, and he not even to dream of my secret deeds or thoughts. I fairly chuckled at the idea; and perhaps he heard me; for he moved on the bed suddenly, as if startled. Now you may think that I drew back -- but no. His room was as black as pitch with the thick darkness, (for the shutters were close fastened, through fear of robbers,) and so I knew that he could not see the opening of the door, and I kept pushing it on steadily, steadily.
Thick darkness, black as pitch:  opoponax, oily labdanum, and birch tar disrupted by a bubbling carnation chuckle.
HEARKENING TO THE DEATH WATCHES IN THE WALL ATMOSPHERE SPRAY I had my head in, and was about to open the lantern, when my thumb slipped upon the tin fastening, and the old man sprang up in bed, crying out -- "Who's there?"
I kept quite still and said nothing. For a whole hour I did not move a muscle, and in the meantime I did not hear him lie down. He was still sitting up in the bed listening; -- just as I have done, night after night, hearkening to the death watches in the wall.
Doom: aged red patchouli, macerated red peppercorn, gloom-black musk, and creaking planks of dry oak.
I FOAMED! I RAVED! I SWORE! HAIR GLOSS I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides, as if excited to fury by the observations of the men -- but the noise steadily increased. Oh God! what could I do? I foamed -- I raved -- I swore! I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting, and grated it upon the boards, but the noise arose over all and continually increased. It grew louder -- louder -- louder! And still the men chatted pleasantly, and smiled. Was it possible they heard not?
Black opium and screeching blood orange.
LOUDER! LOUDER! LOUDER! BATH BOMB Almighty God! -- no, no! They heard! -- they suspected! -- they knew! -- they were making a mockery of my horror! - this I thought, and this I think. But anything was better than this agony! Anything was more tolerable than this derision! I could bear those hypocritical smiles no longer! I felt that I must scream or die! and now -- again! -- hark! louder! louder! louder! louder!
A pulsating dragon’s blood and blood musk bath fizz.

Maison Francis Kurkdijan: Satin Oud
A masterpiece from a master perfumer. Opulence. Excellence. Grandeur. A perfect marriage of the finest Rose and Oud is a rarity, but Francis Kurkdijan is a magician in the olfactory arts. Secured in a gold capped, polished cubical bottle, its presence elegant but non-imposing, luring you into a false sense of security. An unmistakable predatory strategy.
Picture this: Saturday evening, 50 stories high, mild chatter and dimmed lights. Your favourite cashmere turtleneck pressed against the skin while the waiter asks if you would like another glass of their finest. You glance ahead of you to the floor-ceiling windows and gaze into the sea of lights, courtesy of the City of London. Clear sight. It's a satin evening.
Notes: Laotian Oud, Vanilla, Amber, Bulgarian Rose, Turkish Rose and Violet
