I LIKE MY WESTERN SWING RESTLESS AND ECCENTRIC, #1. Honestly never meant to make this restless/eccentric series last so long but it applies to a lot of what I like in various genres *apparently*. At last week’s @lyle_lovett concert it struck me Lyle’s large band is the modern equivalent of Bob Wills’ omnivorous Texas Playboys which consumed all genres in their path (swing band horn charts, fiddles and pedal steel, rockabillyesque electric guitar solos, etc.)... they famously/ notoriously were the first to play drums on the Ryman Auditorium stage in Nashville for the #grandolopry and as far as eccentricity, no band leader ever intruded so brazenly into otherwise normal tunes, yelling “Yes yesssss” and “ahhh ha” and calling out musician names and instruments and singing along as if drunk. I’m surprised chief vocalist Tommy never hauled off and punched him although looking at that pugnacious dude posing on the horse with his cigar I bet you didn’t like to cross Mister Wills. Side note: this is an example where vinyl sounds a lot better than the CD I have of this stuff which must not have been mastered correctly or something.
