In the wake of recent events, I thought I ought to write an article about Jane Birkin and give some praise and context as to her influence on Skirt. Naturally, every artistic expression has its own progression course, but Skirt would not be Skirt had it not been for a fateful day in my university computer room where, coincidentally, I was working on my fashion magazine assignment by that time entitled SKIRT (I kid you not, that was the name.it has been like this).
(WARNING - I use the word Aesthetics here a lot…Sorry for the cringe)
My idea was to include an article in my project about Aesthetics which was not called Aesthetics yet. I understood Aesthetics at that time to be a sub-genre on Tumblr that was being coerced by a few blogs mostly based in Asia. Despite thrift shopping being already a thing at the time vintage jeans were a taboo which felt like an ironic fashion statement and the only place I saw them was on these blogs. Therefore, you can imagine that when I was looking for evidence of this Aesthetics sub-genre the information and images I was looking for felt farfetched.
But then a Google image search relating to t-shirt tucked in jeans led me to a picture of Jane Birkin sitting by a pool wearing a white t-shirt which I can see was actually untucked, blue jeans and a pair of converses. Here was someone from the 60s wearing a look which was going to become a staple of the future. It totally blew my mind and led me on a new path of discovery. After watching the movie Slogan at home, I understood something I never dreamt possible and had a new perspective on French culture. It was incredible when I soon discovered that Jane Birkin was my link to so many other incredible and stylish personalities like Jeanne Damas, Michaela and Emilie Thomsen whom Birkin influenced very heavily and were also on Tumblr like me.
As my interest in Birkin grew and the wave of Aesthetics progressed into UNIF, and Men I Trust my interactions and fashion taste was driven towards what we know today as French Style / Le Style à la Française. It was a lovely progression which restored my faith and passion for Fashion which I was losing due to studying it and the fickleness and shallowness the fashion industry can so often host.
I got an A+ for my magazine, and then I lived happily ever after…….continued on the follow-up Post.
