Some notes:

No new tags this month! So, y'know, we'll have to be content with our 43 mcyt tags. Just that.

Fics are still primarily in english, but we have three exceptions with significant spanish fics. Karmaland (711 of 797, from 691 spanish fics last month), Tortillaland (111 of 116, from 108 spanish fics last month), and QSMP (527 of 4,689, from 466 spanish fics last month). QSMP also shows 244 fics in brazilian portugese, from 175 last month, and 26 in french, from 19 last month.

In the small and micro fandoms, the standout was definiately Pirates SMP, which since being canonized last month has increased by 45 fics. Just by sheer volume of growth versus fandom, mention must be made of idots, which went up by 10 fics from a baseline of 16 last month. Given that the most recent post in the tag was in july, that had to have meant something got wrangled into the tag, or else someone was backdating like CRAZY.

In the midsize fandoms, the standout is, as ever, Fable SMP, with an increase of 95 fics. I think we're starting to get into the whumptober type numbers now, because they were the midsize standout last month with an increase of 33 fics, so that's an increase of almost 200%. Evolution SMP also went up by 49 fics, in contrast to last month's 24.

For the larger fandoms, there were spikes in every fandom, but the big spike I was expecting for whumptober did not really materialize in each fandom. Empires saw an increase of 240 in contrast to 154, but that didn't beat the previous month's 244. However, 3rd Life went up by 463, beating the past three months of numbers as the highest month in that stretch was 395 in August, and last month was only 340. Hermitcraft also beat the last three months, as it went up by 714, and the previous months were 453, 569, and 501, respectively. QSMP went up by 861, beating last month's 725, but, interestingly, exactly matching August's 861. DSMP continues to be the fandom no one can beat for pure volume, as it went up by 1,445, which did beat September's 1,171, but did not exceed August's 1,459. Last year the DSMP jump between October and November was over 7k fics, which at the time I attributed to whumptober, but now is looking more like something getting wrangled into the tag. Not everybody is whumping their guys, I guess.

Aqua's Pirates SMP Fanfic Recommendations (c. Aug 2024)

As a Pirates fic writer myself, am I sad about how few Pirates fics there are in our AO3 tag? Absolutely, and I'm working to change that, one fic at a time. In the meantime, here are some of my fic recs that I particularly enjoyed while in this fandom so far and would like to share with the class.

hey dsmpblr so since we recently lost our minds over eret’s planned-but-never-executed dsmp ending and the reveal that it’s possibly all one big loop, one that’s likely repeated several times before, i have some fucking thoughts about wilbur.

more specifically, the idea that someone else posted, that wilbur could have removed himself from the loop by leaving for utah.

see, i think this could go one of two ways.

one, maybe his fate was always to be from somewhere else, to appear and burn bright, so incredibly bright, but burn out fast, only to be revived months (granted, years for him) later. to eventually leave it all behind in a bittersweet goodbye. maybe there’s no real escape, maybe he’s just as much a part of this as everybody else and he has his role and he’s always going to fucking play it.

but maybe he really did remove himself from all of it. maybe he’s no longer part of the loop, and that’s why, like the original poster said, he didn’t have a room in mizu(?) from tales of the smp.

this can mean so many things.

what if he thinks tommy never wanted to (or never could) come visit him in utah?— never even wrote after that final letter. because the tommy that’s there now isn’t the same tommy as before.

what if tommy, in his newest incarnation, finds himself standing one day, overlooking a stretch of land; it’s water and it’s mountains and it’s grass, and he feels… off? like there should be somebody here with him, but he just can’t place who in god’s name it could be and he can’t even describe the feeling. tubbo calls his name and he forgets he even felt it, just continues on with his life and eventually learns to live with that feeling of something missing until it eventually disappears.

what if, although it’s somewhat out of character for him, wilbur ever came back?

what if he sees this kid, bright-eyed and young again, and he’s got tommy’s nose and his crooked teeth and his gangly limbs and his choppy hair but he’s not tommy. not his tommy.

what if, this time, it’s tommy who came back, but came back different?

what if tommy’s worse without him, but what if he’s better?

what if he doesn’t tense up at the mention of tnt? what if he doesn’t have that scar in the middle of his chest from his first(?) canon death acquired in that duel with dream?

what about everybody else?? what about phil. would phil ever even come to the main land if it weren’t for wilbur’s letter? what would that mean for techno, for niki, for ranboo, for literally fucking everyone??

how the fuck would wilbur feel seeing a world unaffected by him?

what if, knowing who he is, he has the impulse to come back to it, to wrap his fingers around it again and leave an impact. because wilbur was always someone who had to be in control, who had to be in first place, and although he’s now older and changed so much, what’s he going to feel in a world where he has no legacy? where there’s no crater for him to stand in after revival and laugh in surprise at (although that wasn’t his original crater)?

maybe, in the end, he throws himself back into the loop.

because maybe he never was free from it, at least, not in any way that matttered.

listen. c!eret gave Wilbur that sign that said you’re safe when Wilbur had just joined the server. He only had a van, a brother, and sapnap constantly trying to take those things away from him.

Eret knew nothing about Wilbur. None of his morals, goals, habits. But she sided with him. Why? That’s a crazy thing to do. It’s insane. To agree to build a country with someone and be by their side when you’ve never met them. Did she just know? Know they would have a future together in the home they would build? How did she know they would all become friends. Become family, even..oufgj

And it was going so well. Eret built the walls of their home and built love for her new people.

Then war was declared by dream.

And he hated it.

Nothing felt good anymore

Love replaced with fear, it became tense. There were borders built tall between the joyous conversations they used to have. She missed peace, and started to hate the fighting.

Then dream came to her with a deal. That if eret betrayed everyone she would become king of the smp. And she thought about it. If they all died, and if Wilbur was smart, they would be discouraged and resign. And she got the bonus of power. She could make up with everyone later.

So he took the offer.

And she lived to regret it forever.

She looked into the eyes of her family as they realised what had happened. She led them into a dark, underground room. And out from the walls came the other side, murdering them one by one. All she could utter was “it was never meant to be,” and all Wilbur said was a quiet, hurt, “eret.. how could you?”

Now listen. Things did not go as eret planned. They weren’t discouraged they only became more spiteful in the war. And she realised the crown she held high on her head didn’t mean anything. Dream gave him no control over the smp and she felt so stupid and guilty of course dream was to power hungry to make the title “king of the smp” mean anything for her.

She started idolizing Wilbur as an amazing person and all this stuff, but finally grew out of that. She realized she only did that because she regret hurting him. They were both hurt people who did bad things.

Also some things worth mentioning is that erets betrayal is what led c!wilbur into his paranoia spiral in pogtopia. He also made the button room, where he died, to look like where he lost his first life and even quoted eret. He never forgot that experience. And also c!wilbur was SO jealous of eret for a long time. It was kinda funny. Eret also built a museum so the legacy and events and history of their lives would be remembered forever. Also c!wilbur was forever scared of eret

sometimes i think about how catastrophically wrong everything went with the dream smp and how much it just fucking. sucks? that a story that was pretty damn interesting and had a lot going for it at first just rotted like a carcass because the people running it both refused to organize and many failed to. well. write a good story after season 1? i don't want to be mean, but creativity in livestreaming does not necessarily translate well or at all to creativity in storytelling, and there was an over-emphasis on angst and misery that just made it continuously fall flat until people got burnt out of it.

not to mention the weeks to literal months we'd sometimes go without content. and tbh i was done being charitable about that a long time ago. it was so horribly run and we were all like "oh but we have to be nice, they're just people too!!" when this is quite literally their fucking jobs and they promised us things they just did not deliver on over and over and over again. it sucked and was quite possibly one of the worst experiences i have EVER had with content consumption.

and that's not to say that the dream smp was all bad. cause i genuinely think there's merit there to some of the story, especially season 1. i will always hold c!wilbur and c!techno's stories close to my heart!! i also think the format is INCREDIBLY interesting and live performance over a digital medium is something that deserves to be explored. plus the idea of group improv in a game like this is amazing. but... idk. i really don't know. i think about how long i spent loving this story and wishing for the best and now the legacy of the dream smp is just.... creators who ended up being either shitty people or bad writers or both. people aren't gonna remember how cool of a moment l'manberg was, they're gonna remember all those times twitter was unusable because of the latest controversy of the hour. they're gonna remember the disappointment and the months between streams and the outsiders just waiting for it to end. they're going to remember the allegations of abuse and grooming. i don't know man!!!!!! i don't know!!!! i'm so fucking sad that it happened like this and i just wish things could have been better!!!!

The thing about Evo Jimmy that makes me happy is that he’s so much more of a menace and messes around with people!! Sure everytime he does it he loses or something goes wrong but he’s not afraid to do it and doesn’t even think of the consequences!! He only acts civil is when Martyn’s there and if he’s not, no one is safe.

Netty and Jimmy’s friendship is also really sweet because she likes to join in on his mischief and follows him without hesitation,same goes with Jimmy. They both share half a brain cell and they couldn’t care less!! I also love the fact that they both had the most episodes on Evo, they quite literally ran Evo together. Even if they weren’t that lore based or whatever,it was still there and Jimmy’s listener lore needs to more appreciated!!! I wish Evo went on longer so I could’ve seen what would’ve happened. Jimmy also out right hated the watchers and didn’t care at all what they said. After the Listeners gave him his little mission he realised it immediately that the watchers weren’t good people. I also love how Jimmy makes small hints of the watchers but never outright says it,or he mentions them and just brushes past it.

To sum it up: I want Jimmy’s mischievous ways back. I miss him being a little asshole and messing with people

I wholeheartedly agree that I wish Jimmy was mischievous more often like he used to be even if he would often get punished for it, although I do think we've been seeing a bit more of that in places, and I also very much miss Netty and her and Jimmy's banter. I don't think Jimmy was that much of a menace though, rather he just sassed people back, especially those who he felt had done wrong by him, but his entire shtick in Evo was to be a cop and he did very genuinely try to be one, setting out to prove himself to be good rather than a troublemaker when Martyn wasn't around; to prove to Martyn that he was good. Eg when he helped mine resources for Netty's library, gave every piece of it to Netty, surprising her, and then said something like "did you get a picture?". But that might be the culprit, that he was overly punished for any mishaps and quips to the point that he wanted to prove his potential and capability till the end of Evo and started feeling progressively more culpable over the course of future SMPs

This is a trend in most of Jimmy's playthroughs where he just gets caught in other people's crossfire and painted as bad rather than doing anything actually worth punishing himself. I like when he has the assertiveness to get back at people, to turn pranks back around like he did in Legacy and for some of X Life, to hold Martyn accountable in Evo rather than always taking the blame himself, to almost beat Sausage to death in SOS after everything Sausage had said and put him through, when he rejected Scott's poppy in RL and proclaimed that Scott wasn't forgiven for getting him killed. I wish he'd gotten back at people in ESMP2 calling him a toy the same way he did at the Mafia in Evo which continuously villainized him. I like when he's sassy, I like when he gets back at people, I like when he stands his ground, I like when he does pranks, I like when he doesn't let himself be shot down, especially when trying to take charge (another trend, where he keeps trying to take charge as he sees necessary in relationships and otherwise, only to be knocked down 500 pegs). I like when banter involves him rather than just being aimed at him. But I genuinely don't think he's ever been a proper asshole, he deserves to stab and kill and I wish he did but he's only done so when he believes to have been wronged, or he'd stop himself and often apologize or feel guilty etc. I wrote a long post on my thoughts on Evo awhile back where I went more in debth

Don't have much to say about the Listener stuff, the time that Jimmy spent without Martyn at the end is important to his character imo but the end of Evo just kinda lost me in general, any kind of watcher/listener lore passes me by unfortunately but if other people enjoyed that whole bit then more power to them absolutely

god it's just so important to me in hwhbh that cDream's name be stained with his crimes. It's important to me that it's known to every single person living on that server what he Did, Who he did it to, and that what he did is itself an Abomination that is to be discussed with hatred and treated with the utmost scorn.

It's important to me that his abuse is talked about. Between the server's citizens. Between students studying the history in schools.

It's important to me that his legacy is one of rusty, bloody barb wire thorns. That for the rest of time, anyone who comes to the Dream SMP as a Location will be made aware at some point about the former admin, that they will be told his crimes in one way or another, either directly through picking up on the local lore, or through sly looks, brief whispers, and through how people stiffen and grow pale at the mention of his name.

You say that man's name to anyone who has live on the SMP and they just look like they are 5 seconds away from throwing up.

Blood and sickness is his legacy. One that perfectly suits him.

Everything italicized is new, and there are three new SMPs this month! New Life SMP didn't make the cut, but there are over 20 fics in the uncategorized tag, so that has to be coming soon.

Fics are primarily in English, but now we have three exceptions with significant Spanish fics: Karmaland, Tortilla SMP, and QSMP. QSMP also includes fics in Brazilian Portugese and a (very few) in French.

Several of the smaller fandoms saw fic decreases, and 100 Hours Hardcore decreased for the second month in a row.

In the smaller fandoms, the standout was Witchcraft SMP, which saw an increase of 20 fics.

For mid-size fandoms, the standouts are Lifesteal SMP with 48 fics and Fable with 32. Lifesteal has not yet broken the 1000-fic mark but with the rate it's been going, I would be very surprised if it hadn't broken that barrier by next month.

Minecraft (Video Game) is no longer categorized under "Celebrities and Real People", it is only under "Video Game". As part of that reorganization I have to assume some fandoms were split out, because it actually saw a 640 fic decrease.

In the large fandoms, QSMP's 692-fic increase, while not quite reaching the height of last month's 816, beat out Origins, Empires, 3rd Life, and Hermitcraft for fics. The only one which beat it was Dream SMP with 1,357. QSMP saw less fics than last month, as mentioned, as did Hermitcraft (604 last month, only 486 this month) and 3rd Life (581 last month, only 363 this month) and Empires (320 last month, only 226 this month), but Dream SMP's 1,357 actually beat last month's 1,243.

i got bored and analyzed a cool song to relate it to dsmp!tommy so here that is:Tw for mention of suicide and i think drug use?the song is Re-do by Modern Baseball! 10/10 song you should listen if you haven’t!! :D also you should thank @mellorphic for the reason this is being posted lmaoo okok onto the analysis JKBSBFJ--

“I wanna start from the top, maybe like a do-over. Replace the voices in my head with blind innocence”

So this line makes alot of sense for me. Tommy’s life was absolute *shit*. He didn’t have the greatest life so it make sense that he would want a ‘do-over’. Tommy was a kid when he joined the smp, he was childish and impulsive. He was largely innocent of how shitty the world was. He wants that innocence back, he wants to be able to be a kid again. The ‘voices’ in his head could be chat, but thats more of technos thing. I think the voices he’s talking about is his internal thoughts. His suicidal ideation, his impulsive things. C!tommy once said he was everything he didnt wanna be and that really reminds me of this line.

 “I wanna complete re-do, maybe change my name. Report the losses grab the claim, it's a shame it's such a shame” 

Nothing to say about this line besides the ‘its a shame, such a shame’. Tommy *could’ve* had a great life. He *could’ve* been great. Thats not me saying he wasn’t great or anything, i mean great in tommy’s standards. I dont think he regrets a lot of his impulsive actions (dueling dream/giving him his discs for lmanburg/ burning georges house down) but he’s not blind and he does see how they altered his life. He thinks its a shame that he never became anything of himself. He’s not obsessed with legacy or anything, he doesn’t *want* to be something, but he can recognize its a shame.

“We're pissing away our time 'cause we're pissing away these beers. No monumental moment ever came from saying ‘Come on dude, just take one more shot’.”

Nearing the end of the smp, when wilbur left, tommy really as just pissing away his time. He had no one really. He wasn’t *doing* anything with his life. He didn’t have anything to live for and he lived in paranoia and when it came down to it, he’d rather kill himself and everyone else around him than live with the idea that dream was still out there. IK the song is talking about beer when they say ’just take one more shot’ but i think it fits tommy more if their talking about giving something another shot. Tommy isn’t one to give up, he always gives things, people, objects all ‘one more shot’. Almost nothing good ever comes from it though. He’s said he doesn’t believe in second chances, that he believes in people. In not giving up on others. I think thats a bit of dangerous thinking on his part, especially with the people hes always around.

 “Try to, try to forget, that your bones will dismantle And the dreams you had, they'll collide with time”

Tommy wants to forget that he’ll die soon enough. He’s both terrified of and welcoming of his death. I think he wants to forget what limbo is. (btw I'm taking bones will dismantle as a ‘you're gonna die’ type metaphor idk man). Tommy had dreams, ofc he did. He mainly just wanted peace. He wanted a community. He wanted to be friends with so many people and do impulsive things. He wanted to see the good in people, even when there was nothing there. But when he does these things, when he makes friends, when he has a community, it all comes crashing down around him. He cant keep that peace for forever.

“Your unrequited love for life will surely- Halt that I'm thinking way too much at night”

Tommy loves things easily and hard. Including his life at one point, but ofc he hardly receives the same time of love he gives so freely. He doesn’t let him think about this though. He doesnt want to think about his life. He stopped going to therapy, he stopped going out. He started taking invis, so he could feel at least somewhat on the outside what he felt on the inside. invisible.

“Maybe I could just move away or go extinct like a triceratops, But I love loving, watching movies, sitting back and also breathing”

Tommy thinks about how he could just leave the smp like wilbur, he could just sail until he reached land, far far away from the smp. But.. he could also just kill himself. He could just die. C!tommy has made plenty of references to suicide, mainly during exile. He *could* do these things, but he still loves too much. Even with how bad he had it, he still loved doing things. He couldn’t leave without leaving the good things too.

“My family and friends would be crushed, but is it enough? (Oh no, it's not enough)”

His family and friends are not the reason he’s alive. He could say they are, but their not. What has any of them really done to keep him alive anyways? They are not the reason he’s not moving away or ‘going extinct’.

“Oh, the future freaks me out, but I guess I could just, Curl up in a ball and think”

At the end of the smp Tommy doesn’t have any plans for the future, he barely has anyone, he’s so caught up with the past he cant even begin to think of the future unless someone else is leading the conversation. (tubbo and him talking about L’Moonburg) 

Then its just the chorus again, twice but in the second time theres new lyrics in the back 

“Try to, try to forget (I won't be breaking any barriers) That your bones will dismantle and the dreams you had (so I'll keep thinking the future) They'll collide (future freaks me out) With time, your unrequited love for life (I won't judge you if you think the same) Will surely halt that (so let's keep thinking) I'm thinking way too much at night (well the future, the future freaks us out)

This feels like a conversation between tubbo and tommy, with the parentheses being tubbo and the normal part that i’d already analyzed as tommy. Tubbos more hopeful at the end of the smp, talking about L’moonburg, excited to start a new country with tommy. He’s not planning on doing anything new he’s not breaking any barriers. He’s just thinking about the future they’re gonna have together as co-presidents, as best friends. Of course, the future freaks him out too, but he doesn’t keep himself from thinking about it like tommy. He understands why tommy’s afraid though, he wont judge him for it. He knows it freaks both of them out but he wants a future together so he tells him to keep thinking. <3

Tommy remembers when he would just sit with Wilbur and talk. Wilbur wouldn't have to be taller or louder, sometimes, Tommy remembers, he would just let Tommy talk and he would listen.

But it's not like that now. Now every time they talk it's politics, its threats against Dream or discussing stratagem for the next war. Tommy wonders how many wars there will have to be for Wilbur to get what he wants.

Tommy has a feeling that he won't rest until his enemies are below the sole of his boot, or, the worse option, until he's lying 6 feet deep underneath the rubble of his legacy.

C!Pearlescentmoon Head-cannons

First thing first: She is favored by both Watchers and Listeners. She is not one or the other, however they each did give her some kind of titaness powers. ______________________________________________________________

Trigger warning: Mentions of blood and sharing food with animals.

Hybrid forms/how they were gotten:

Magpie: Born with the wings, however instead of red eyes, had dark blue with light blue pupils. Once she had escaped Evo with the others, her eyes changed, and wings stopped growing due to a methionine deficiency developing. She can no longer fly with them but continues to preen them.

Moth: While in Legacy, Sausage was trying to find an alternative honey and tried using Moths to make it. Had Pearl drink some, effects never went away.

Wolf: In her tower in DL, the few crops she had grew slowly and her food supplies dwindled. Desperate times called for desperate measures. Rotten flesh it was, even if that meant sharing her last piece with Tilly.

Alien: (There's a couple for this one) -She fell out of the sky on her first (Evo) smp. You could say she's been hiding this since day 1. -Impulse's chocolate bar that he had her try in season 8 had some effect that remained dormant till she was around the alien plants in season 9. -Used some weird plants she had found in some soup and it transformed her into one.

Salmon: Salmon blood got into a cut she had gotten by skinning her knee on day 1 of season 10.

Spider: Bitten on a fresh wound while on Fantasy smp or could argue it was a cave spider that had gotten her in a trial chamber a week before. Either way she was bitten on a fresh wound

Bat: One had bit her out of fright and when she had killed it, its blood got into hers.

Bunny: Was harvesting carrots and hadn't noticed the teeth marks till after she had bitten into it.

Youngest Skybling. Grian is the oldest and Jimmy is the middle child.

Has actually cursed out multiple people. They, however, didn't understand what she was saying due to her accent getting thicker when she's angry.

Deathly afraid of needles. Will barricade her base and buff up her defenses, usually turning into her full wolf form. Takes at least 7 hermits to get her one shot and they all die afterwards.

Likes old raggedy worn-out things. Says that when things are tattered and patched up, it shows the love that has been put into that thing, so the person didn't have to throw it out.

Would visit Empires almost weekly in Season 9, and when she couldn't visit would give Gem the letters to pass out to the others.

Likes helping with Sausage's lore, however, still feels weird about playing the role of a goddess.

Laughs every time she sees Skizz's Tasmanian devil creation that got him kicked out of heaven. The first time she seen it, she had died from suffocation because of laughing too hard. Her ribs hurt for fifteen minutes after she had respawned.

Takes Gem ice-skating even though she herself can’t skate.

Her eyes will revert back to how they were in Evo some days. Would hide them behind sunglasses because she was afraid that they would scare people.

Would get cheer up tickles from Cleo and Scott when she was sad in Last Life. i.e. when she couldn't stop Joel from killing Scott/when Scott turned red and left the yellows. This is what lead to Pearl's lines of 'doing a little tickle' in Double Life

The DL mechanics would let soulmates feel whatever the other felt physically. When Scott missed the old Pearl, he would trace hearts on his ribs. He didn't know it, but Pearl felt every stroke, and this drove her deeper into madness.

Despite everyone thinking that she got the scar across her eye from Joel when he killed her, she had actually gotten it when Cleo had critted Scott on the second week of DL. Joel's axe had lodged in her forehead.

The Watchers hadn't known what to do with the boogie man curse during DL. However, noticed that it was attracted to Pearl, while in her vulnerable state. They believed it would be satisfied after her first kill. . . They were wrong.

Stopped talking after her DL victory. Only communicated with gestures.

Stayed in Gem's castle for multiple weeks. Spending most of her days staring in a mirror. Making sure that the face she saw back had no purple in her eyes and was recognizable as her own.

Had restricted/supervised access to powdered snow and cacti, and later berry bushes, pufferfish, and fire.

Would ration all her food. Impulse secretly got her three farming villagers and a whole box of emeralds she could use to trade for carrots with.

Cleo was the first one to find out about her wolf form and helped her through adjusting to it.

tl;dr fame is weird

it's actually kind of crazy to think about how there's people that almost everyone around the world knows like

imagine if you tried to explain to someone a thousand years ago that there was this one "Taylor" or "Wilbur" or "Lin-Manuel" that just… internationally, cross-continentially, people know them. and they're not political figures (at least not by definition); they're not famous warriors, or royalty, or emperors-- nope, they're poets. bards. and not only their songs are internationally known, no, their personal lives too-- to varying degrees, of course, but to a point where some of their fans misguidedly feel as though they know them like a friend, because they've grown accustomed to hearing their voice day in day out in their own room, their own house, wherever they go--

like how is society that tilted that the overwhelming majority of people will go forgotten by all but their close friends, their passing acquaintances-- did you know that studies from four years ago show that the average person only makes 29 "real" friends in a lifetime, of which only 6 last? in 2003 there was a study that said you make 400 friends in a lifetime, but only a few close ones. regardless of what the accurate statistic is-- can you imagine that most people will be remembered by maybe 400 people, of which not even half will last a generation down? But there's this handful of celebrities, this select few-- it feels like a lot when you start listing them, but placed in contrast with the 8.1 BILLION PEOPLE currently on the earth? insane. a study from 2013 says 0.0086% of people are famous. LESS THAN ONE-TENTH OF A PERCENT! it's like the world's worst gambling machine, a fucked-up few raised on a pedestal so the rest of us can dream of lives we'll never attain because we were born at the wrong time or were too shy to grab a microphone or just missed an opportunity that one time. They will be remembered, at least for longer than a single generation, because they have a wikipedia page and an album or two to back them up. They are known on a first-name basis across thousands upon thousands of households, part of more inside jokes than they themselves could ever comprehend, mentioned more by strangers they'll never meet than some people will be named by their loved ones in a lifetime. We laugh at the cinematics and television fame of the Hunger Games, we act like we don't put people on spotlights in deathmatches. We act as though we wouldn't throw ourselves forwards as tribute if we were asked to be destroyed by a life of fame, and in fact some of us long for it. We thirst for the thrill of being recognized on the streets, not even realizing what kind of horrors these people undergo on a daily basis because they were Sherlock that one time. The twisted sides of the internet they have to avoid because humanity's most fucked up desires are now projected onto them, the chosen few, the "lucky" ones. We shout abuse at them for being human, for being tired, for making mistakes. We expect them to be perfect, even if many of them didn't ask for this life of fame. Sure, they may still want it-- because who wouldn't? It is the dream of contemporary man to be famous, and if you stop to think about it, it has always been. Hamilton destroyed himself for his legacy, Narcissis died of his own adoration, Nebuchadnezzar had a statue of himself erected so that all might bow to him. We long for recognition of the masses, and today's society makes it look so easy. Look at Ranboo, Tommy, Tubbo, Philza-- all streamers who skyrocketed out of seemingly nowhere, seemingly at random. Just "luck", right? Right place, right time, got in on a famous SMP and BOOM they're famous now, making more money than they'll ever need. You don't see the dedication they put into-- the work, the burnout, the endless grinding and years of nothing that precursored their fame. It makes it feel like you have a chance-- if they could do it, why shouldn't I be able to, right? If I keep trying, maybe I'll hit that same goldmine, right?

But it doesn't work like that, does it?

So we're left with our pipe dreams, our useless aspirations, that little kindling flame inside that believes we could rise above. We cherish it for the rest of our lives, ignoring the odds even when they're glaring at us like the sun. Because if we abandon our hope at fame, then, well, why bother trying at all? Because we're "doing what we love"? In this economy? Hah, nice try.

Yet somehow… maybe there's some merit to it. Maybe, if the odds are really that horrid, we should stop caring. We can keep hoping, sure-- so long as that hope brings us nothing but sweet longing, and none of the sour regret of missed chances and twisted desire. But maybe we shouldn't live on that hope alone, and maybe we should bring back some of that innocent warmth and kind enjoyment that those live laugh love signs are always going on about. Maybe, just maybe, our goal should be our own happiness, not an endless investment in a future that will probably never come. Maybe we shouldn't sacrifice now for tomorrow, every day over again, in the futile hope that one day tomorrow will be today.

Because at the end of the day, we only get one of each. Famous or not, time will keep ticking, so you'd better use it well. Striving for fame isn't wrong, but be careful when you gamble with your life.

If you wouldn't bet your entire fortune on a 0.000086 chance, maybe you shouldn't bet your entire life on it, either.
