48 Hours in Paris

We really enjoyed our weekend trip to Paris at the beginning of March! It rained most of the weekend, but that may have actually added to the city’s charm. Last time I was here, in high school, was a whirlwind of crowded tourist sites and I did not enjoy the visit. We made sure this trip was the opposite – no rushing around, waiting in long lines, or visiting tourist traps. It was perfect.

Neighborhoods

Every neighborhood we visited was so cute. Coming from NYC, where it's basically just the West Village that's anywhere near as charming as Paris, I hadn't realized it was a possibility for such vast swaths of the city to be so architecturally striking, clean, and elegant.

The Left Bank

Saint Germain – We stayed on the left bank of the Seine, in the beautiful, quiet Saint Germain area. We enjoyed walking around Luxembourg Garden, window shopping at the luxury boutiques, walking to the Eiffel Tower along the interior streets (with an obligatory stop at Pierre Herme Café for the passionfruit and chocolate “Mogador” macaron), and tapas at Freddy’s, a cute neighborhood wine bar. We stayed at Hotel des Saint Peres, which was recommended by a friend and is also featured in the NYT 36 Hours in Paris article. The “cosy room” we booked was possibly even smaller than a NYC hotel room, but in a nice location that felt safe and free of any street noise. On a future visit, I’d either stay here or in one of the many larger hotels in the Vendome/Opera area, which is very central.

Saint Michel – Also known as The Latin Quarter and adjacent to Saint Germain, this neighborhood is similarly nice. We walked around the Sorbonne and Ecole Polytechnique universities (not much to see from outside, tbh), tried visiting the famous Shakespeare & Co bookstore (the long line outside on a Sunday morning was a deterrent), and had a beautiful jog along the Seine towards the Eiffel Tower. We also saw the famous Notre Dame cathedral from outside – it’s still under major construction since the fire several years ago, but the façade looks beautiful. We tried visiting Musee d’Orsay, my Paris highlight from 2008, but it was sold out when we tried booking online same-day. We tried a neighborhood vegan spot, Le Grenier du Notre Dame, which had excellent protein options but was a bit too salty for our taste.

The Right Bank

Vendome/Opera – From Saint Michel we crossed the Seine to the right bank, where we walked by The Louvre (though didn’t go in – I still feel burned by fighting crowds to see the underwhelming Mona Lisa last time!) and through Jardin des Tuileries. Our food highlight of the trip was lunch at Tekes, a vegetarian Israeli restaurant with delicious, unusual (and salty) takes on veggies like leeks and fennel and dishes like gnocchi and bourekas. Sadly there was basically no protein in the dishes though. We also tried a vegan chain, Wild & the Moon, which had pretty good protein options but was otherwise rather underwhelming (small portions, high prices, food was okay). It was a nice neighborhood to walk around, with a busier feel than the left bank.

Tourist Highlights Walk – From Vendome we walked down the Champs Elysee past many luxury shops to the Arc de Triomph, which was impressive. S has high praise for the view from the top of the Arc, but it looked very crowded so we didn’t bother. Then we walked over to the Eiffel Tower, stopping at a random cute café on the way from the Arc de Triomph for tea and a snack. We saw a nice view of the Eiffel Tower from an elevated area across the river, then walked over and found there wasn’t much to see there (there used to be an open garden next door, but it was closed off).

Montmartre – On Saturday afternoon we walked from Vendome up the hill to Montmartre, stopping at Boulangerie Louvard for their Instagram-viral cookie croissant. Although there was a line winding outside the shop, it moved quickly: the wait was <10 minutes and well worth it. It tasted like a warm cookie from Levain Bakery melted onto a Parisian croissant. Such a treat. In Montmarte we stopped at the Dali Museum (€14 pp) for about an hour– I wasn’t previously specifically interested in Dali, but I tend to enjoy art museums focused on one person (like the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Klimt collection at the Neue Gallery, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, etc.) and really liked this one as well. Then we walked further uphill to see the Sacre Couer from the outside and, near the church, a nice view of Paris. This was one of the more touristy areas we visited and some of the alleys leading up to the Sacre Couer were not very appealing in that regard; a friend recommended we avoid Montmartre after dark.

Le Marais – We made the ~hour-long walk from Montmartre to Le Marais, a hip neighborhood along the banks of the Seine. It seemed like a really nice place to walk around, and while we didn’t make any stops, I’d go back. We tried visiting L’as du Fallafel, a famous falafel stand, but it was closed on Saturday (presumably for the Jewish Sabbath).

To/From the Airport

I had a great experience flying Air France from JFK (specifically, really kind flight attendants). Getting from Charles de Gaulle into Paris city center seemed a lot faster by train than car given traffic when I got in on Friday morning, so I took the RER/B train (€11.80 pp one-way, detailed instructions here). It took about 45 minutes to get to Saint Michel (there is also sometimes an express train that I read only takes ~25 mins), and then I walked ~15 mins to the hotel.

To/From Gare du Nord

On the way out we were taking the Eurostar to London, so we took the 4 subway train (purple line) from Saint Germain to Gare du Nord (the big train station). It was very easy and took about 20 minutes door to door. It took about 30 minutes to get to the Eurostar terminal and through their layers of security and passport control for the UK.

i don't wear a ton of lipstick tbh, depends on your skin tone and what you like. generally i like warm/peachy nudes and cool/berry rosy tones, i'm not a red lipstick gal

the tinted balms by ilia are really nice, i have the shade lullaby and it's a very pretty cool rosy toned my lips but better colour. i have the tower 28 gloss in pistachio and it's a really flattering neutral nude, not sticky at all. i also have the dior lip glow which is fine i guess but i never wear it

otherwise i've pretty much been using exclusively la bouche rouge because i'm trying to reduce waste by using makeup with refillable packaging, plus the cases are made with leftover hermes leather which is cunt. the formulas are good but honestly not amazing, the kjaer weis ones might be better but i've never tried. i have rosewood which is a nice nude, i use it the most but it's a little too pink for my liking. i got le nude veronika as well which is warmer and really pale and kind of makes me look like a cadaver but it's kind of grown on me, i've mixed the two and it looks nice. i also got le rose tuileries which is a deep cranberry colour, it's a beautiful shade for winter but i overestimated how much i would wear it, it makes me feel like i'm doing too much lol. it's so hard ordering online because their photos are all photoshopped but their instagram and ssense tend to have more accurate representations, i'm interested in getting le nude brun matte and le rose saint germaine next

I had some misconceptions of the City of Light before I arrived, but honestly, I love it now. Paris is so beautiful I feel like I’m in a Disney movie when I’m there.

The Eurotunnel connects the UK with the rest of the continent, so it’s recommended to take the Eurostar from London St Pancras International Station to Paris Gare du Nord, but that was more expensive than easyJet (£85.38 + £16.49 for hold luggage aka a checked bag). If you’re after a cheaper way to reach Paris, budget coaches make the 10-hour journey daily.

It seems like everyone speaks perfect English but they don’t want to, which is fair, as it’s their country I’m visiting. The worst part of Paris is the ongoing cloud of cigarette smoke everywhere, and partially because of this, I smelled some of the worst body odor on others, but also some people had the best perfume I’ve ever smelled before. So, hmm.

I flew into Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), and it was super easy to take RER and the Paris Métro into the city. The RER has its own separate charge, but I bought ten tickets for the Métro to get one free ticket. Then, using Google, it was very easy to map out directions for the rest of my trip.

The first night I stayed at St Christopher's Inn Canal for €26.90. I enjoyed the location, right by Canal St Martin, where it was easy to grab a drink or bite to eat, sit by the canal and enjoy Paris the local way.

While there, I also enjoyed:

Parc des Buttes - A beautiful park that offers some of the best panoramic views over Paris. And it has a waterfall!

Parc de la Villette - This massive park houses museums, concert halls and theaters. Going down the SLIDE, and, then, seeing la geode was a highlight of my trip.

Pere Lachaise Cemetery - Spend an hour exploring one of the most prestigious and popular cemeteries in the world. Come pay your respects to Jim Morrison or Oscar Wilde.

Le Cent Quatre - An artist space hosting performances and events from all corners of the globe. Sit there and watch some local dance crews rehearse.

My favorite to place to stay was MIJE Fourcy Fauconnier Maubuisson for €28.37 a night, because of the location, within walking distance of L'As du Fallafel (the best!), Notre Dame Cathedral (can you believe the fire happened days before I arrived?!), and Saint Chapelle (simply gorgeous). I also stayed at Aloha Eiffel Tower for €27 a night, but did not like the location (more residential and so far south) or accommodation.

Just a few notes:

I was there for the riots they expected on May Day - the French being French, I suppose. Métro was not running and I wasn’t sure what would be open, so I saw Avengers: Endgame, which was a great three hours!

I ate croissants for every breakfast, baguettes with fresh cheese and cured meats for lunch, and casseroles and steak frittes for dinner. I made sure to have eclairs and meringue, but regret not having macarons or a crêpe smothered in Nutella chocolate spread from vendors on the street.

If you scheduled your days right, you could get a museum pass to save money, but I couldn’t be bothered to see so many things in a short period. A lot of Paris museums are free the first Sunday of the month, which would be great if you’re around, but I’m sure they’re very busy.

The Musée d’Orsay was disorganized in layout, in my opinion, but I thoroughly enjoyed the entire top floor. I purchased the joint ticket (€21) which included the Rodin Museum, which was just alright. Had to see The Thinker, I guess.

If you spent 60 seconds looking at each of the objects at the Louvre (€17), going steadily for eight hours a day, it would take you 75 days to see them all. It is simply enormous. I chose to book a 2-hour tour on Airbnb with Hugo ($43.61), which was well-worth it.

I personally enjoyed the bookstore, Shakespeare & Company, because I found a quiet corner to read a book for an hour -- but I understand most people find it chaotic.

I loved walking around the Montmartre district and up to Basilica of the Sacré Coeur, but didn’t make it to Moulin Rouge (nearby).

Visit the Champ de Mars and then walk around the iconic Eiffel Tower or pay to take the stairs up for views over the city (because the elevator takes too long).

Spend a day at the Palace of Versailles (€27)! Check out Kaitlyn’s guide to Versailles here. I’ll never forget the swans swimming in the grand canal at sunset.

I enjoyed drinking Angelina’s hot chocolate while walking through Tuileries Garden and then along the Seine River.

I liked viewing the ceiling of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann and jumping on the suspended trampoline.

I flew out of Paris Orly Airport (ORY) because it was closer, and a convenient €19 Uber ride. I did have to search my flight number on Google to figure out my terminal, because it was nowhere on my ticket or invoice.

I’d really love to return to Paris and visit these spots (in no particular order): Moulin rouge, Opera garnier, Refuge des fondus, Phonomuseum, the catacombs, Luxembourg Gardens, Grand Palais, Musée national des arts asiatiques, Pompidou centre (national museum of modern art), Église Saint-Eustache, Bistro Paul Bert, Merci department store, La Gaite Lyrique, Anticafe work spaces, Harry NY bar (where Bloody Marys were invented), Arc de Triomphe, Pierre Herme pastry, Popelini cupcake, and Centre Pompidou.

There is a LOT to see in Paris and there are a million websites out there with better recommendations than mine, but if you ask me…

The running

Downloaded a lot of run-maps from the Great Runs website. I can’t recommend it enough…! There are a LOT of runs there. Also, it’s easy to run in Paris, there are lots of places to run but I wanted to have options… so I’d recommend downloading mapmyrun, adding the runs and follow the app, or just go run wherever your heart tells you to go and when you’re tired just map your way back. I put some of the most centric or fun runs in this document -> Paris Running -so I had something to look at night when I was planning.

Running in Paris is pretty easy. The Seine is always there and you can run alongside it. There are some cobblestones in the bottom sometimes, but the top is fine. There are a few water fountains but not as many as I am used to. There were a ton of bathrooms though… I run to the Jardin des Plants and Jardin de Luxembourg but make sure you check their opening times. I also wanted my husband to see the Grande Arche de la Defense, so we just run there. We ended hopping on the metro back, which was super easy, and it was our first time on the train!

What to eat… or Where to eat, really. Just eat everything.

Loved Carette, for their macaroons, their escargot, all the french food. There are three, the one is Place de Vosges is the cutest I think.

Au Pied du Cochon. Get all the food. This is the best french onion soup in Paris. The bone marrow was amazing. The escargot so good too

If you need an “urgent” snack Pauls are everywhere cause it’s like their Starbucks but all their baked goods were amazing to me. There are also Amorino in lots of places (their chocolate sorbet is quite good, but you can get that in NY…).

Go to the Ile Saint-Louis for Berthillon ice cream. It’s insane.

Macaroons: my favorites one are the ones at Carette (please try the rose one, you’ll die), but Pierre Herme was quite ok.

Angelina was adorable for coffee/brunch. The hot chocolate is their specialty.

Musee D’Orsay has a lovely restaurant (not the Cafe Campana or the Cafe de l’Opera), amazing.

But pretty much everywhere was amazing. I obviously ate in a bunch more places but I feel like they are particularly as good as pretty much everything there is!

What to do

oh there’s so much to do… SO MUCH.

I have this doc I created -> Paris to do before I went with ALL THE INFO. And I added my comments in pink in there for you. They are listed as in Things to do (that you need tickets for), things to see (like, you walk by), and where to walk around (like a neighborhood to stroll through) and day trips from Paris. The doc has TONS of info, like hours of operation, prices, etc.

But, below, I am going to organize it differently, so you can prioritize by order of urgency. Go to the doc for the info on each.

While the city is studded with fabulous boutiques and stores, these seven ultra-popular shopping districts in Paris are gold mines for discount-hunters, designer divas, window shoppers, and fashion victims alike.

Best for: Crème de la crème designer fashion, chic home furnishings, quality cosmetics

Getting there: Metro Concorde, Tuileries (Line 1), Pyramides (Line 7, 14) Main streets: Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Rue Saint-Honoré, Rue de la Paix, Place Vendome

The Faubourg Saint-Honoré district is the pulse of Paris design and fashion. Part of the Louvre-Tuileries neighborhood, the Saint-Honoré fashion district is studded with flagship shops from classic designers like Versace, Hermes, and Yves Saint Laurent, but also houses resolutely trendy boutiques and concept stores.

Also make sure to check out the elegant boutiques lining the arcades (covered galleries) of the Palais Royal: from luxury perfumer Serge Lutens to upscale vintage shops, jewelry, and art, shopping in the Palais Royal's chic nooks is worlds away from the hustle-and-bustle of central Paris, and offers a dose of real old-world chic.

The Faubourg Honoré is also only a hop, skip, and a jump away from the grandeur of the Opera Garnier and the Belle-Epoque Paris department stores dominating Boulevard Haussmann, including Galeries Lafayette and Printemps (click through to next page for more on these treasure troves).

Best for: Getting lost in Paris' prestigious– and dizzying– Belle-Epoque department stores (grands magasins)

Getting there: Metro Havre-Caumartin (Line 3 or 9), Opera (Lines 3, 7, 8), RER Auber(Line A) Main streets: Boulevard Haussmann; Place de la Madeleine

The old Parisian department stores are famous for being worlds unto themselves. Galeries Lafayette and Printemps department stores dominate Boulevard Haussmann with real Belle Epoque grandeur, concentrating top designer collections for men and women, gourmet food shopping, home design, jewelry, and even hardware into a labyrinth of consumer delights. In the winter months, of course, these “grands magasins” are decked out with lights and elaborate decorations for the holiday season, so don't miss checking them out then.

Covered Passageways (“Les Arcades”)

Also make sure to check out the old-world elegance (and high-quality boutiques) of the old covered “arcades” (passageways) in the area, including the Galerie Vivienne, which houses luxury boutiques from top designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, as well as rare bookshops, old-fashioned artisan toy shops, and gifts. (Metro: Bourse or Palais-Royal Musee du Louvre)

Other “arcades” worth exploring nearby include the Passage Jouffroy, with its throwback-style shops, and the Passage du Grand Cerf (Metro: Etienne Marcel), well-known for its intricate antiques and fine old jewelry. Stop at the latter before exploring Rue Etienne Marcel and its trendy boutiques from designers including Kenzo and Thierry Mugler.

Best for: Eclectic and high-fashion, high-quality chains, vintage stores, artisan and handcrafted jewelry, antiques and fine art galleries, cosmetics and perfumeries Getting there: Metro Saint-Paul (Line 1) or Hotel de Ville (Line 1, 11) Main streets: Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, Place des Vosges, Rue de Turenne, Rue des Rosiers

The historic Marais quarter is prime stomping ground for shoppers with an eye for the unique and finely-crafted, not to mention antique and fine art lovers. Try antiques or fine-arts shopping on the Place des Vosges, jewelry, fragrance, and cosmetics shopping at boutiques like Diptyque and MAC on Rue des Francs-Bourgeois, or plunder fashionable but accessible chains such as COS on Rue des Rosiers.

If you're a fan of excellent teas, chocolate, and other gourmet goods, the Marais is also an excellent area for foodie shopping. For high-quality French tea, head to Mariage Frères (and its adjoining tearoom) on Rue du Bourg-Tibourg, or Kusmi Tea on Rue des Rosiers. Meanwhile, Josephine Vannier (4 rue du pas de la Mule) is listed in our guide to the best chocolate makers in Paris.

For a great concept shop in the general vicinity, Merci is one of the trendiest places in town to shop for men and women's designer fashion, home decor, accessories and books, and more. The tearoom and cinema-inspired adjoining restaurant next door are perfect spots to perch, see and be seen, too.

Avenue Montaigne and the Champs-Elysées

Best for: Designer shopping, trendy chain stores, Sunday shopping

Getting there: Metro Alma Marceau (Line 9), Franklin D. Roosevelt (Lines 1 and 9), George V (Line 1), RER A (Charles de Gaulle-Etoile)

Avenue Montaigne and Avenue des Champs-Elysées form one of the city's most coveted fashion junctures. Avenue Montaigne is fast outstripping Saint Honoré in the arena of chic-cachet, with legendary designers like Chanel and Dior lining the street with flagship boutiques. The Champs-Elysées, for its part, features luxury names (Louis Vuitton) while also being a major spot for shopping in trendy global chains like Zara. Meanwhile, to keep the kids happy, the Disney Store dominates the “Champs” with fun window displays and enough toys to colonize the moon.

Sweet tooth? Try a legendary macaron at Laduree, and enjoy a warming cup of artisanal tea in the adjoining tearoom.

St-Germain-des-Prés

Best for: Chic classic design, books, and home furnishings

Getting there: Metro Saint-Germain-des-Prés (Line 4), Sèvres-Babylone (Line 10) Main streets: Blvd. St.-Germain, Rue St. André-des-Arts, Rue de Sèvres

Once synonymous with the famous intellectuals who haunted local cafés, St.-Germain-des-Prés has acquired several shades of chic and is now a preferred spot of BCBG's (yuppies). Sonia Rykiel and Paco Rabanne have boutiques here:

Try Rue Saint-Andre des Arts for rare books, unique regional gifts, and vintage threads.

Meanwhile, for local department store shopping, the Bon Marché is the consummate left-bank address for classic chic. If you're a foodie or are in search of gourmet goods to take home, make sure to have a whirl through the enormoys food hall there, too.

Les Halles and Rue de Rivoli

Best for: Major chain shops and trendy boutiques

Getting there: Metro Chatelet-Les Halles (Line 4, RER A,B) Main streets: Rue de Rivoli, Rue Pierre-Lescot, Rue Etienne Marcel, Rue de Turbigo

Once the locus of “the guts of Paris”– an enormous outdoor food market, the area around Châtelet-les Halles was transformed into a major shopping area in the 20th century. At metro Les Halles is a monstrous underground mall, “Le Forum des Halles”, where global chain stores reign.

Running east to west from the Marais all the way to the Louvre, Rue de Rivoli is much the same. Great deals can be made on this long shopping artery in the city center, even outside of the Paris sales season. Get intrepid and dig around at these Paris flea markets

Best for: Antiques and oddball items, discounted and vintage clothes and shoes

Getting there: Metro Porte de Clingancourt (Line 4) or Garibaldi (Line 13)

The Saint-Ouen flea market (or “puces”– literally, “fleas”) is the city's largest, and dates to the nineteenth century. Located at the very northern tip of Paris, les puces are an essential shopping stop. Come here for a few hours to browse the antique furniture, odd objects, or vintage clothes. There are also many other flea markets around the city, and they're pretty much all worth spending an afternoon exploring.

You may not come away with a masterpiece painting (as once was the case), but a find you are likely to make. A word of advice, however: weekdays are preferable to avoid the inevitable crowds. Also make sure to watch out for pickpockets.
