it's finally here!!! my beloved fic for the 520 day guardian reverse exchange! this was written for trobadora, who gave me the most delicious set of ideas to fit into a story. it was so fun.

i have no idea how to describe this fic, frankly - this is, hands down, the most complex and most heartwrenching and most incredible thing i've ever written in my entire life.

here is a list of some things in it: a kiss, a mystery, a change of heart. old chinese people, dark energy world-building, lesbians, big-time character parallels, forgery of documents, rainstorms, rowboats, lollipop symbolism, [redacted], bedsharing, grading, the stupidest undercover name ever. zhao yunlan described with so many light metaphors. shen wei being the most shen wei i could make him.

Stay (Beyond Evil, Oh Jihwa/Yu Jaeyi) Because you know what that show needed? Small town lesbians.

Little Spear (The Blood of Youth, Sikong Qianluo/Xiao Se) This show has some cute het, but how it would work in bed is another matter entirely; or, two gay people try to have straight sex.

动须相应 (live-action Hikaru no Go, Yu Liang/Shi Guang) It's hard to get much gayer than the actual show without adding explicit sex, so ... here you go! Post-series boyfriends.

One Quiet Night (Kingdom, Seobi + Lee Chang/Yeongshin) This is the other thing I'm really proud of, because it too came out pretty much exactly the way I envisioned it. A nurse, a prince, and a scrappy piece of shit more or less all fall in love.

Hooks in My Sides (Beyond Evil, JWDS) This certainly was the most popular thing I've written all year. It's unfortunately easy to write poor Juwon having a gay meltdown.

A World Made Up of Silver and Copper (@shousetsubangbang) A prince-and-pauper scenario, this time focusing on the prince's adventures in being mistaken for himself. (Hint: they are sexy.)

A fair amount of November was spent writing something that I just couldn't finish for December's SSBB, once I realized how long it'd have to be and how little free time I had. Maybe next year!

And that's it! It always feels kind of weird to see it all gathered in one place, like ... wow, that's not nearly as much as I thought it was. But at the same time, it involves a couple of pieces I feel very good about, so overall I'm going to take the win.

The most fun I had was doing my Small Fandom Summer thing, where I wrote fic for fandoms that had <1000 English-language works on AO3. Maybe I'll do that again next year!

Anyway, if you do wind up reading something, especially the original stuff, thanks. A lot of this can be a very lonely process, especially when there's not much of a built-in audience. Saying you liked something makes me feel a little less like I'm screaming into the void.

4 - Sweet Revenge

The plotty sequel to In The Middle Of The Night, my vampire canon AU! As the summary for that series gives away, it features the Stealth Lesbians:

5 - In Light Of Stolen Memories

Ohhh, you're gonna like this one, it's deliciously angsty! :3

Kid!ZYL finds a dusty old lantern in the SID's storage and ends up lighting it by accident—and receiving Kunlun's memories of the YOHE era, from when he saved a young Heipaoshi to when he sacrificed himself to light the Guardian Lantern.

Fast forward to canon times, Zhao Yunlan runs into Shen Wei and promptly recognizes him as his Shen Wei. Except... It's not his Shen Wei, is it? It's Kunlun's. Not helped by the fact that Shen Wei recognizes him as Kunlun, when he's not, he's just an imposter. A wannabe Kunlun.

It's Weilan trying to figure out how to build a relationship with the shadow of Kunlun hovering over them. Lots of emotional h/c ;)

6- Soulbond [redacted]

Hmmm, trying to figure out how much to say without giving away the reason for the [redacted]. Let's say it's inspired by a prompt from a certain someone and I'm hoping to write this for them as a gift!

Weilan end up soulbonded and have to figure out how their new abilities and limitations ;) Post-canon fix-it.

13 - Arranged Marriage Weilan

The big longfic of doom OTL. Modern Canon AU in which Dixingren are widely known and there are rising tensions between Dixing and Haixing. Afraid war might break out between them, Heipaoshi offers to marry a Haixingren to reinforce the Treaty. Since he's Director Zhao's son, Zhao Yunlan is the ideal candidate (since HPS specified he wanted a male spouse).

Problem is, Zhao Yunlan is head over heels for Shen Wei, an unassuming paper pusher he met at a government networking party.

Shenanigans ensue in which Shen Wei tries and fails to find alone time with Zhao Yunlan while Heipaoshi is courting him to tell him his secret identity. Also there's some plot with assassins and the like.

It's gonna be a two-parter I probably won't ever finish but by GOD am I gonna write and post the first part (which ends on the wedding night) next year at the latest >:( I've been fiddling with the first 20k I have for over 2 years now, this cannot continue!!

16 - Warlord Kunlun

This is a historical AU in which Kunlun is a roaming alpha warlord, who just defeated Zei Qiu and is claiming everything that belong to the traitorous chief as his war spoils - including the omega twins. Shen Wei pledges himself to Kunlun's service to protect his people (not as a sex slave, but everyone is aware of the bride potential), and then Kunwei fall grossly in love.

32 - Weilan case fic

In which Shen Wei is wrongfully accused of A Crime and the SID has to work against the police to prove his innocence. Meanwhile Shen Wei pretends to be all Harmless (TM) stuck in his jail cell.

ur posts got me to reread guardian, and it really is my favourite of priests works as well.. except maybe liu yao but we'll see, translation isn't done yet. and there's no liu yao adaption with actors with that much chemistry, that turns ghosts into aliens! i love shen wei and zhao yunlan so much, theyre incredibly complex characters and their relationship is so sweet and realistic feeling. also, the fact yunlan feels like a real bi dude! like he's living his life... being bi... love that 4 him

MY FRIEND... YOU ARE RIGHT... i haven’t read liu yao yet but i’ve heard very good things about it, i’ve got a couple f/f things to read first but then i think i’ll give it a try!

johnny bai and zhu yilong truly have so much chemistry together it’s insane... like i think the guardian drama is ridiculous and very badly done (ik they had budget issues) but STILL all the weilan scenes were so touching and emotional, it’s amazing. and you’re right, their characters in the novel are so deep, i love the very fucked-up aspect of them as well (yunlan having bad life hygiene, being a bit of a selfish asshole and misogynist / shen wei being very controlling and obsessive and creepy yet startlingly innocent in many ways)... 

you’re absolutely right, they feel very human and realistic in all their very passionate, sometimes obsessive love, in this devotion... shen wei clinging so hard to this millenia-old past with kunlun who was the world to him, to the point of breaking apart fate in order to force him to reincarnate... but yunlan isn’t quite kunlun and never will be and shen wei learns to fall in love with him all over again :( the same way that yunlan falls in love with shen wei, the present shen wei, and after learning of this past has to consider how shen wei lied to him and take time to forgive and understand him.

HE REALLY IS SUCH A REALISTIC BI GUY even in how he understands this about himself! the scene of him coming out to his mom, begging her not to be mean to shen wei, saying he’s “ready to go completely gay for him”, like this is how many people irl also view those things... labels take a step back from behavior and action, yunlan likes men and women and admits it freely, but right now he loves a man and since this is all that matters to him and he will never change then he is gay now, bc this is how it’s perceived, and he doesn’t care. i love also how he thinks of himself as kind of a creep or freak for it all, not even in a self-depreciating way, just bc that’s how society views it and he doesn’t care to prove anyone wrong. if they call him a creep for sleeping men, then he is a creep for sleeping with men. if they call him gay for currently loving a man, being in a relationship with a man, despite being attracted to women as well, then he is gay. who cares! this is how being gay, or queer, or bisexual works for many men (and people in general) around the world. not everyone has knowledge about exactitude of labels or cares to learn that bisexuality is different from homosexuality. many people understand that differently about themselves and others... and this is also why, as a lesbian myself, i am not bothered at all by women calling themselves “bi lesbians” or anything of the kind. 

all of this is what makes yunlan so very realistic and relatable in my eyes. and in the same way, shen wei, who isn’t human at all and has never been and never will care about integrating fully with humans, doesn’t label himself as anything. he is in love with kunlun, with yunlan, he doesn’t see himself or yunlan as “men” but rather as “beings” (not even “people” in the sense that humanity gives the word). any shame or hesitation he feels at yunlan’s pda is not for himself, but rather because he awkwardly understands that yunlan may be looked at in disapproval for it... or simply because he is still the same flustered ghost king who ran away for fifty years after kunlun kissed his forehead. looking for the soulfire kunlun lost, bringing it back to him as an offering in the hope that kunlun will give him this again: a kiss. something he had never known before and didn’t even know how to name.
