Villainy is hot
and I cannot help but be intrigued by it. My destiny in life to to collect every dark-haired - crooked grinned - morally grey - traumatised - slightly deranged man in every book ever written.  And I WILL get there one day!

Review #1: Everless (4/5)
Hello, welcome to the first ever post (well, not really) in this blog. And like I’ve said previously, it’s going to be a review. Well, that first post was posted like DECADES ago and I wanted to review the Wonder movie, but I guess it’s no longer a thing anyone would look up to. So here I am writing a review for one of the most memorable fantasy I have and will probably ever read.
I have a thing for fantasies. From classic Grimm brothers fairytales, to Harry Potter, to the Land of Stories, I LOVE THEM ALL. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my mom used to live Disney movies and wants to pass it down to her children. Over time, the love for Disney movies evolves to becoming the love for fantasies. Books, movies, anime, comic, you name it. This time, it’s a book.
Tumblr media
This book is titled Everless and it’s written by Sara Holland. There’s a sequel to it, titled Evermore, but I haven’t got the time (or money) to buy the book so this is what we have for now.
Curious? Here’s a cover:
Tumblr media
Oooooohhh
Well, just from seeing the cover, the first things that get to your mind are probably that the story itself is about ‘time’, considering that 80% of the cover is a gigantic hourglass and that little writing to the right just underneath the title there that said:
“Time is a prison. She is the key.”
You know where this is going.
Here’s the synopsis:
IN THE KINGDOM OF SEMPERA, time is money—extracted from the blood, traded in coins, and taxed to the hilt. Wealthy aristocrats like the Gerling family live for centuries, while the commoners struggle to survive.
Jules Ember loathes the Gerlings. She and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident drove them away. But now, desperate to earn time, Jules returns to Everless amidst preparations for the wedding of the youngest Gerling lord to the Queen’s daughter.
Jules soon discovers that Everless holds more temptations—and danger—than she thought possible. Stories from her childhood begin to take on new significance, dragging her into a past she hardly recognizes and revealing a tangle of violent secrets that could change her future—and the future of time itself—forever.
Okay, well now that that’s done, time to start with my opinions.
First off, I’ll start with the overview of the story because before I read the book, I didn’t understand the synopsis AT ALL. I don’t know if it just didn’t reveal that much information, or if I was just plain stupid.
Well anyway, the story tells of sixteen(?) year-old Jules Ember, a poor villager who lives in a tiny village called Crofton with her father. They barely have the money to fill the stomachs with, and sometimes Jules will have to hunt for food, even though it’s like totally illegal.
(I’m getting the Hunger games vibes honestly)
The thing about hunting in the winter, is that its hard and there’s a chance you don’t get your hunt. But that’s not a problem for Jules, because there were times when time would just slow down at some points. Lucky for her, it did that time.
It wasn’t something that was supposed to happen. It was abnormality, but Jules have felt it since as far as she can remember, so she didn’t think that it was something that’s not supposed to happen.
Next, let me inform you about the term “money” in this book.
See, you know when you’re so poor you literally have zero money and you can’t buy anything or pay for anything? Well, if you run out of money, you’d have to bleed for it. Quite literally, actually, as the currency they use in Sempera is called “blood iron” and it can be found in everyone’s blood. If you have lots of debts and ZERO money, then you can pay the debts by bleeding.
The amount used for the “blood iron” currency goes:
An hour coin
A week coin
A month coin
And a year coin
Aside from using it to pay debts and bills, there are other times you might need to be bled, like when you want to change your blood to coins so you can use it for transaction or salary, or when you did something against the law and have to get punished. One of the characters in this book actually received a punishment of getting forty years bled out of her.
So let’s start with the actual review, shall we?
Pros:
The concept itself is VERY new. If you can, I’d like you to mention a book with a similar concept to Everless
How Sara Holland cleverly masks the conflict and how exhilarating it was to read about the beginning, the buildup, and the rise of the villain. You’d never expect what the conflict was until you read the book.
It makes you crave for more. Once you tipped that spot, you won’t let this book out of your hand.
Character development. And I am specifically talking about Liam Gerling, y’all.
“Sara Holland is a fierce storyteller. An intoxicating blend of blood, secrets, and haunting mythology, Everless gives a new and terrifying meaning to the phrase ‘running out of time’.” —Stephanie Garber
Cons:
The plot at the beginning seems slow and kind of dull. Also, it’s pretty much like every other fantasy/dystopian story. Illegal hunting because the main character was poor beyond measure, sells it at the market, goes home, meets wrecked family.
It’s VERY slow. The story is fun and all, but it’s only fun once you ACTUALLY reach the fun parts. Before that, you’ll bore yourself so much that you’ll might consider putting the book down and letting it rot before you pick it up and start reading again
Overall, this book was a lot of things. A lot of feels too. I’m kind of disappointed that there’s not an official fandom for this book because it needs one. If I could, I’d really love to spread the word about this book and make people read it. It’s totally worth your time and your money so.
One last thing before you go, if you consider reading the book and actually bought it, when you find the character named Caro, mind telling me how you imagine her to look like? Because for some reason, since the first time she came along, I’ve been imagining Cassandra from the Tangled Series and now I can’t unsee it
Tumblr media
Alright, that’s about it for now. I’ll see you on the next post (which might be close by, as I have finally found out how tumblr works). My prediction is that it’s going to be a travelling thing next...if another review doesn’t come up.
See you!

Just finished reading Everless
Am i the only one who felt like slapping jules amber half of the time and giving liam a pat on the head?
While reading i was juust like:
HOE DONT DO IT !
BAD!
THEY ALL WARNED YOU NOT TO!
LISTEN TO PAPA-LISTEN TO SWEET LIAM!
DONT BE STUPID JULES!
DONT-OH MY GOD SHE'S DOING IT!
Okay now you go and face the consequences on your own...
And roan seriously by the end :
Me: *shrugs* i didnt even like him anyway, i don't particularly care one way or another. Plus he was a terrible flirt and there was nothing much interesting about him, since the beggining of the book he seemed too perfect for it to be less than absolutely false.

"La mayoría de la gente le tiene miedo al bosque, porque creen en esas antigua historias en las que las hadas detienen el tiempo en tu sangre o los brujos pueden quitarte años y desparramarlos en la nieve con un susurro. Hasta se dice que el espíritu del mismísimo Alquimista vaga por estos bosques atrapando eternidades en un suspiro. Yo he aprendido a no temerles a las historias."

Evermore
Tumblr media
Author: Sara Holland
Published by:Orchard Books
Pages: 350
Format:Hardback
My Rating ★★★★
Time is a weapon. Only she can use it.
Long ago, I stole the Sorceress’s heart. Now she wants it back.
As a child, Jules Ember was taught that the wicked Alchrmist stole the good Sorceress’s heart, dooming her people to live and die by the time captured in their blood and preserved in their currency. While the rich thrive for centuries, the poor are lucky to scrape together a few years.
But Jules has just learned the truth: she is the Alchemist and Caro – a woman ewho single-handedly murdered the Queen and Jules’ first love, Roan, in cold blood – is the Sorceress.
Now Caro will stop at nothing to destroy Jules and reclaim her heart. Forced to flee Everless, Jules must delve into the stories she once believed to be legends but that she now recognises are accounts of her own dangerous past. For it is only be piecing together the mysteries of her first life that Jules will be able to save the boy she’s falling in love with – and end the Sorceress forever.
My thoughts:
Evermore is the sequel to Sara Holland’s Everless, which I read and reviewed last year, giving it five stars! Right from the start of this duology I absolutely loved the premise of these characters living in a world where time is bound to blood, and people exchange blood and time currency to live. The whole story of Everless just felt really original and unique throughout, so naturally I was eager to read the recently released Evermore, which continues the story in new and exciting ways.
The concept of Everless was intriguing and magical, it drew me in right away, and despite how long it had been since reading the first book, I found myself really quickly pulled back into this incredibly detailed and rich world created by Sara Holland.
In this sequel, the use of time as currency did not play quite as much of a role in the story, which I thought was a shame, as it was probably the most interesting aspect of Everless for me. The first book really explored how being able to buy and sell time from someone’s life would affect people, and society at large, which I found gripping and highly original.
Evermore focuses more on character development and the important people in Jules’ world. I really liked the twists and turns in the story as she began to better understand the link between herself and Caro, but was slightly less interested in the brooding romance between Jules and Liam Gerling, which at times felt a little predictable in my opinion.
Within the first chapters of Evermore, I found myself thrown right back into Jules world head-first, and there wasn’t much time to catch a breath. The book begins as Jules has returned to Crofton, wanting to find Amma, who appeared briefly in book one. However, a very dangerous Caro is waiting for her, and as a result, Jules is quickly captured and thrown in prison.
Eventually she escapes, and whilst on the run, she begins to tie together puzzles, stories, and fragments of memories, which she hopes will help her to destroy the Sorceress for good. In fact, most of this book follows Jules on the run while she searches her past for any way to defeat her.
For me, Evermore definitely felt more like a conventional fantasy read, despite the first book also falling into the science-fiction genre at times. I liked the further details included in Evermore about the magic system and thought the mythological links were very interesting, but I’m not sure it thrilled me quite as much as reading part one.
What really makes this series stand out for me personally is the very creative magic system, the exploration of time, and using blood iron as currency. The writing in both books is fantastic, gripping and imaginative, and Holland has built an intoxicating fantasy world with rich characters and detailed backstories.
I loved the final few chapters of Evermore in particular, and felt that the ending was maybe the strongest part of the book – previously unanswered questions were nicely concluded, but there still remained a lingering suggestion that perhaps there is more to this story…
While I had hoped it would be as exciting and mysterious as Everless, Evermore is certainly a worthy sequel and will give you all the answers you’re looking for! I will absolutely be reading more from Sara Holland in future.
Overall reaction:

“Fox,” said Snake, curling slowly around her friend’s heart. “It’s time we face the truth.” ⠀ Have you read #Everless yet? I read it in December and it’s been one of my favorite 2018 releases. I usually see plot twists coming a mile away but this one caught me unawares! I cannot wait for the sequel, #Evermore to be released. I need to know what Jules will do next! Also, Liam Gerling!? Amiright or amiright? 😏😍 ⠀ In other news, we are on our way to see Infinity War! 😬 I haven’t been spoiled but I’ve seen people have had mixed feelings about it, I’m nervous! We will see if it goes the same direction as the comics! 😱 ⠀ #bookstagram #bookworm #booknerd #bookphotography #bibliophile #booklover #bookaddict #instareads #bookblogger #bookish #beautifulbooks #booktag #prettybooks #goodreads #yabooks #fantasybooks #saraholland #everless (at Nevada)

¡Hola! . . #noveladefantasia #everless #leoycomparto #instalibros #popularbooks #booklove #blog, #compartoloqueleo #leoycomento #book #libros #bibliomania #booklover #autores #autoras #recomiendoautores  #viviresleer #yoopino #bookstagram #librosymaslibros #librosrecomendados #booksnifer .    . . . Everless by Sara Holland is a debut novel with a really interesting premise: time in the land of Sempera is bound to blood and then to coin, and the price of extracting blood iron is a person’s remaining life span. I love the concept of the blood iron… imagine the money in your pocket represented a part of your lifespan. It is a little terrifying to think about! Unsurprisingly, it means the rich live on for centuries and the poor bleed themselves to death, a cruel irony considering they die before getting to enjoy the basics they’re trying to pay for… . I have quite conflicted thoughts on this book. Holland has created an engaging and interesting world and a fantastic mythology for the reader to get lost in. I am really looking forward to see how the alchemy and other magical elements play out in future books. However, I feel as though the characterisation lets this book down. The main protagonist Jules felt rather generic… another YA fantasy heroine trying to save her family and putting herself in unnecessary danger to do so. Jules didn’t come across as having much personality and as a result, she became just another character in the book. I would have loved to seen more character development across the whole cast, especially the secondary characters. Most of them appear briefly, and feel like tools for moving the story forward, without the possibility for more. The only character with layers appears to be Liam, one of the Gerling brothers. He is the anti-something and I am so looking forward to see where his story goes; he was the stand out for me. There were also some inconsistencies in the writing that possibly could have been tidied up in the editing process… . Overall, Everless feels like a debut but I feel as though it has real promise! I’m looking forward to book two - Evermore - and seeing where Holland takes the story and her characters! . Also, a shoutout to @literarygalaxy for her gorgeous bookmark! It is perfectly matched to the book and her attention to the small details makes it even better! . @teambkmrk #everless #saraholland #bookreview #bookblogger #flatlay #booksbooksbooks #bookworm #yafantasy #bookmarks #booked #booknerdigans (at Liverpool)

Everless Book Review
Tumblr media
In the kingdom of Sempera, time is currency—extracted from blood, bound to iron, and consumed to add time to one’s own lifespan. The rich aristocracy, like the Gerlings, tax the poor to the hilt, extending their own lives by centuries. No one resents the Gerlings more than Jules Ember. A decade ago, she and her father were servants at Everless, the Gerlings’ palatial estate, until a fateful accident forced them to flee in the dead of night. When Jules discovers that her father is dying, she knows that she must return to Everless to earn more time for him before she loses him forever. But going back to Everless brings more danger—and temptation—than Jules could have ever imagined. Soon she’s caught in a tangle of violent secrets and finds her heart torn between two people she thought she’d never see again. Her decisions have the power to change her fate—and the fate of time itself.
Rating: ★★★★★
The Everless plot synopsis intrigued me, and I was not disappointed. Holland has created an interesting new world – I cannot wait for further development in the sequel. The exact nature of the ‘blood money’ remains pretty mysterious, and though other readers have complained about our lack of knowledge so far, I am much more positive about it. Holland’s concept is brilliant, for it is not only literally blood money, the elite in Sempera take the life-force of those they perceive to be lesser. Although the connection between blood and time is briefly explored in folktales about a sorceress and an alchemist, I am confident that the background will be explored more thoroughly in the next book. I don’t believe that world-building must be complex – in fact I often much prefer it to be more subtle, with the focus on characters and plot instead. Either way, it is clear that the magic process will be explained as Jules comes to understand her own abilities.
The plot is well paced, and I enjoyed the narrative as it progressed. Suspense is achieved primarily because the reader and main character are both interested in the same things, and yearn to know more. In Everless, Jules’ journey is in discovering that everything she thought she had known about her life was a lie, from her true family to her experiences at Everless as a young girl. It works precisely because Jules is just as much in the dark as the reader, and as Jules learns more, so too do we. This is also why it is unnecessary to know everything about the world that Holland has created – even Jules does not understand much of it! Certainly magic, and the stories of the Sorceress and Alchemist, are at the heart of it, and this will be the next part of Jules’ journey.
The characters were well developed, and I particularly enjoyed the relationships that Jules had with other women, from the servants to the princess Ina and the Queen. I’m looking forward to the changing dynamic between Jules and Ina now that their secret connection has been exposed, and more of her antagonistic relationship with the Queen. Surprisingly, I also enjoyed the differing relationships that Jules had with the Gerling brothers, particularly Liam whom she had more chemistry with. Over the course of the narrative, we learned more about each character through their relationships with each other, allowing certain revelations to take place. Everless was focused on establishing the plot and developing relationships – Evermore will hopefully focus on deepening these relationships and explaining the mysterious aspects of the plot.
