I found myself spending the day at the lake on Sunday. In my tiny kayak in the water, there was safety. With the multiple tragedies of the weekend, one hitting so close to home, my heart was heavy. I didn't realize today as I focused my energy on my clients how impactful the stress had been on my body. We find ourselves after such events attempting to escape or negate the feelings we have. But what we do not address always takes a toll. Take time today to do an inventory of your stress and need for self-care. If nothing else is evident given the events of the weekend, we need more love in this world. First Post

So here goes my first blog post. 

My name is Lindsay and I am a first year graduate student working on obtaining a degree in counseling. I’m 26 years old and I live in Austin, Texas. My entire life I always thought that I wanted to work towards one specific goal and never left any room for exploration. After I got my degree in this area, I soon realized that it was NOT what I wanted to be doing. It was also at this point in time that I was working on some personal issues and was seeing a Psychologist. After a few months, I realized that this was a field that always interested my in my undergrad and I would be able to own my own business and not have the same tedious work everyday. From that point I researched programs and decided upon my current University. I love that it is small which allows for myself and my cohorts to have such individualized attention. While I am working on getting my degree, I currently work at an eye doctor as a technician. The work is tough but I just keep telling myself that it is all a short term pain for a long term gain. I’m not quite sure what else to write for now, but I’m sure as time goes on the post will get better.

To be a Mr Rogers Person

I’m not big on idols. Of course there are people who inspire me and who I focus on... Amelia Earhart, Frida Kahlo, and more. One person who inspires me immensely is Mr Rogers.

I think many we people will idolize are not and were not perfect. If you read about Fred Rogers, it will come up that at times he had anger. I hope this is true, because knowing that someone who was so genuine, caring and inspiring had struggles gives us all hope!

Somewhere in my life, I learned that you’re most like (or most influenced by) the five people you spend the most time with. That information was likely meant to reinforce who you’re spending time with right now. I get that, but I also get more.

Who you focus on as inspiration, who you read about and watch matters and affects you too. That’s why I love to watch movies about and learn more about Fred Rogers. He had a beautiful combination of qualities > deep presence with who he was with, the ability to close out the outside world to connect with whoever he was with, simple and powerful acts of nurturing (like writing letters to people and praying for them by name.

He was gifted with musical and storytelling abilities he could have used in many ways. He chose to leave the traditional path of being a minister to minister to children in a more profound way.

For me to be a Mr Rogers person is not to do exactly what he did, but to embody the beautiful qualities he had ~ along with his humanity too.

Are you willing to find exercise that keeps you fit and free mentally and physically ~ as he did swimming laps?

Are you willing to live thoughtfully ~ cutting out factory farming food in your diet?

Are you willing to be present with everyone you meet ~ noticing and acknowledging them with love?

Are you willing to use your unique gifts to be of service to others who need help, hope and inspiration?

Are you willing to stay connected by visits, phone, snail mail and email with people in your life?

Are you willing to feel mad and know you can feel your feelings but work through them?

Are you willing to tackle the tough subjects and stand up on the side of love?

I am willing to practice these things because living this way is living!
