to borrow a concept from the unsleeping city (if you haven’t seen it holy fuck please watch it it’s so good and season 1 is on youtube), there’s a special layer of magic throughout the city called the “umbral arcana”. this basically just keeps your average new yorker from noticing any magic effects: for example, in the fic, the only way to get to davey’s office/apartment/wizard lair is to walk through a wall. there’s a specific spot in the wall that he’s enchanted, so ppl who know how to get there can pass right through. when jack arrives for the first time and kath brings him through, to him it looks like she just opened a secret door! the umbral arcana prevents him from seeing magic, so from his perspective, there’s a hidden door and some kind of weird high-tech security system, not just a portal through the wall.

davey and kath, who’ve both used magic their whole lives, can see through all that and know that the city basically runs on magic. all the most powerful people have some kind of magic— whether they’re a sorcerer like davey or have a more niche skill set like kath talking to the dead— and it’s all perfectly normal to them. they have to be careful about using magic openly ofc, but the umbral arcana is a layer of protection to keep regular people from noticing anything odd.

i hope this all makes sense!! to recap: jack can’t see magic at all because he isn’t magic, but davey and kath both use it very regularly. magic is very common around the city, but the average person has no clue, and the umbral arcana creates logical explanations for things to keep them from catching on. 😁

i thought the mafia & phantom troupe subplots are boring af bcs 1) i dont really like the troupe, 2) im easily overwhelmed by introduction of the new characters & now the plot has branched, and 3) no kurapika in it. but turns out THEY ARE AMAZING HOLY SHIII— and boy oh boy, hinrigh has gained new fans. the fact that hes a new side character is insane fr. cant describe with words how cool & astounding this subplot is, subverting my expectations in a good way.

next chapter is going to move back to the princes & kurapika's plot. as much as i love kurapika and his current situation, i just wanna see the mafia conflicts resolved before jumping to another POV😭😭 but maybe we'll get into that later✨️ but yeah, i miss my boy so much, cant wait to see him❣️
