Summary: After saving Albert from stumbling off a cliff in the Heartlands, Arthur invites him to Valentine for a drink. What ensues after that is a quiet love story, in which both men find themselves completely undone.

Chapter 8: St. Denis was never enough.

“Goddam cemeteries,” said Arthur. He was loading his volcanic. It was early night, and they were creeping through the mausoleums. It had become imperative for them to play errand boys, running out grave robbers in their final push to bring Jack back. It was by far the most ridiculous bullshit with which they had ever been tasked. There was a dog barking somewhere amongst the tombstones, and they kept finding vagrants crouching here and there as if the dead could somehow keep them warm. It all made Arthur feel sick in his bones. “This place is hellish.”

“I appreciate you being here,” said John. He seemed nervous, but not by ghosts nor vagrants. He was terrified about Jack. “Seriously.”

“Of course I’m here,” said Arthur. "Don't be a moron."

“Braithwaite Manor weren’t no picnic. I still smell like smoke.”

Arthur lit a cigarette. He was smoking it and feeling dry in his throat and in his eyes. He was tired. He hadn’t slept properly in two days. “Ain’t sure what you expected.”

“Dutch is losing his mind, Arthur,” said John. “Don’t you think? I ain’t too keen on what I see.”

"I don't see much of anything no more."

“I ain’t sure how much of it I see neither. Seems an awful waste. Of a life? All this time, and running? I don’t even know what he’s talking about half the time.”

“You really ought to leave,” said Arthur, looking around. There was a sad dove singing somewhere nearby. It was creepy. Arthur swore under his breath.

“Leave and go where?” said John. He stopped, like he had got confused by his location.

“I don’t know,” said Arthur. “Anywhere. We get Jack back, and then I reckon you ought to wrangle him, Abigail, and leave. Ain't no reason to stick around no more if you don't follow.”

"What about loyalty?" John said.

Arthur said nothing of it at first. In his mind, he had traveled far from the notion of loyalty. His loyalties had changed. He didn't know what the goddam word meant anymore. "Be loyal to what matters," he said, pulling words out of his ass. But they sounded true.

John seemed pensive on this. He had stopped cold and Arthur along with him. They were officially lost, but neither of them seemed to care, or even notice. “Interesting,” said John. "Real interesting. What about you then?"

“What about me.”

“You and Albert.”

Arthur looked at him, taken off guard. John was unwavering in his resolve, gazing through the fog. “Come on,” said Arthur, ignoring the question. “Let’s get a move on.”

“You can tell me the truth,” said John, following behind. “I ain’t—I would never judge you, Arthur. Not for that.”

“For what?”

“For loving a man. It ain’t like that. And hey, maybe I’m wrong? But I’m just calling it like I see it.”

“You ain’t wrong,” said Arthur. He had the cigarette crammed between his lips. He’d started to get freaked out by the atmosphere of the cemetery, so he holstered his volcanic and opted instead for his repeater. He looked back at John who was earnest and reminding him of a dog who had wandered into a field of corn. He looked so young, thought Arthur. He looked as young as he had the day Arthur took him out that noose in Chicago. Arthur remembered how he’d had ligature bruises on his neck as if he had been dragged for a mile, and when they got him back to their camp in Putnam all the way over on the Illinois River, he did not speak for two days. It still broke Arthur up inside, to think of it.

“Arthur?”

"It’s just—” He shook his head out, to get brave. “You ain’t wrong. Okay?”

John nodded. He didn’t push nor prod. He just said, “Okay.” He seemed satisfied. “I think the place we’re looking for is just ahead.”

“Thank Jesus.”

They finished the job upright and got out clean inside twenty minutes. As they rode home, John struggled with Jack, who seemed enamored of the brief, fancy life he had lived while sequestered at Mr. Angelo Bronte’s. He talked in ecstatic, shiny terms, which intimidated John at first. Arthur mostly found it amusing, though he understood. He was relieved to have Jack back. He was relieved. He had known all along how bad it could have gone, and he had to close his eyes to shake the old fear from his heart.

It wasn’t long before they were back at Shady Belle, and the gang was celebrating Jack’s heroic rescue along with the false comeuppance of all those who had wronged them. Arthur smoked idly and stood off grooming his horse so as to avoid Dutch and even more so Hosea who was sick and getting sicker and whose love he knew to be true but constantly misguided by his thirst for the life. Arthur had never felt any such lust for anything and standing now, in the swamps of southern Lemoyne, he felt farther away from his own life and his own love than he ever had. It took him a great deal of will to finally enter their camp that night. A big haunted house in a big haunted country.

It had been four days, and Albert, in a fit of boredom and cabin fever, rode his horse out of the city and to a safe camping spot, north of Rhodes near Dewberry Creek. It had been so long since he’d slept outdoors that he was beginning to wonder if any of it had ever happened. The creek was an Arcadian dream, full of Whitetail, fox, rabbits. Scarce boar. He tracked a twelve-point buck for a while and took its picture, felt free and alone and calm. He built a fire and his tent, fished a fish in the creek, cleaned and cooked it up for his dinner in the manner taught to him by Arthur. He poured a glass of bourbon whiskey and ate as the sun went down behind the tangled tree line, feeling proud.

Before he had left St. Denis, Albert stopped at the post office where there was waiting for him a letter from his mother. He had been looking forward to her correspondence for a couple weeks now. Before he went to sleep that night, he leaned against a fallen tree trunk, sipping more of the whiskey, and he read that letter by the light of the fire. His mother��s letters were long, requiring time and commitment. They often read like opinion editorials full of immaculate grammar and journalistic observations upon her own life and his and the lives of those she deemed worthy of conversation in the high society of Philadelphia. She was a good writer, educated at Vassar College prior to marrying Albert’s father, the son of a prominent businessman from New York. She was into her mid-fifties now, living in Philadelphia, and she had been alone for many years. He worried about her, sometimes. She had always seemed a tough cookie, but knowing Arthur had tough him well that a strong armor is worth little more than the human sadness it protects.

In his last letter, Albert had told his mother of Arthur—not in a bid for her approval. He just wanted her to know. The letter he received in return now was several pages long and full of life, but it did not mention Arthur until the very end. He smoked several cigarettes as he read, and by the time he got to the final paragraph, he was happily drunk and sat up off the fallen tree, leaning closer to the fire, for what he read would serve to change his life—

Well, dear Al, we are nearing the end of this most current exchange, and in the spirit of your previous letter, I would like to close things with a quaint proposition for you. You remember my brother, your Uncle Matthew, who recently purchased a large stake of land out on the central coast of California? Well, Matthew has taken a wife, and together they have purchased a home in San Francisco. In the wake of things, he has offered the ranch to me, free and clear. I have taken him up on his offer, of course, and plan to leave in three weeks time. As you well know, I have been aching for departure to the west for many years, and as a result will be closing up the Philadelphia estate indefinitely.

The property in California is comprised of 200 acres of terrain with water, plus a wide stable and two free-standing homes. It also holds a significant quarters for farmhands and stable boys and finds its end on a cliff that drops off into the wide, blue Pacific. I have seen photographs, and it is quite beautiful. Obviously, it is far too much for me to occupy by myself, however, and what I mean to propose is that, should you and your Arthur find yourselves in need of a home once your stretch in St. Denis comes to a close, you should pack your bags and get on a train to Monterey. Technically it is in a little place called Carmel-by-the-Sea, but you catch my meaning. I hope you’ll come. I am certain you would discover a wealth of inspiration for your work out west, Al. And Arthur as well, for I know how you mentioned he is an artist.

Please be in touch, hastily, as if the two of you plan on coming to stay, I will need to ready the property. I like to be prepared! Good luck with your opening, and remember how I love you. Give Arthur my warm regards. I do hope to meet him soon. You sound happy.

Much later, with the night winding down, Arthur stood chain-smoking on the swamp as a thunderstorm now raged over the horizon of the Lanahechee. With the adrenaline wore off, his body felt beat as he looked at the dark water ahead of him. It seemed endless and humid. Behind him there was the party, still going on and on as ticker tape. Javier played the guitar while Karen sang with Miss Grimshaw and they drank whiskey by the fire.

The colors of the world in which Arthur lived were changing, all around him. He felt sour and uncomfortable there, held up inside and anxious to unleash himself from the life to which he had been yoked for so long. Having forged a life of his own, separate from the interests of the gang, this was now all that Arthur could think about. He knew that it was selfish but he could not remember any other time in his life in which had allowed himself to entertain his own needs long enough to even register what selfishness felt like. He was bored and agitated as he looked out at the swampy river’s edge.

Mary Beth came down at some point and stood beside him, a welcome surprise. She had a pale scarf tied around her hair as if to protect from the occasional blowing rain. Arthur gave her a cigarette, lit it for her off the burning end of his own. Together they stood, looking at the lightning for a while, and smoking like old times.

“You did good, Arthur,” she said after some time. She glanced at him from behind the scarf like she was hiding part of herself. Thunder went off in the distance and shook the land. “Getting Jack back. It was a real good thing you did for John.”

“I know,” he said. “Thank you.”

“I’m supposed to tell you that Dutch wants to talk to you.” She said it half-heartedly. She did not even look at him.

Arthur said nothing.

“Anyway, John’s inside,” Mary Beth went on, smoking. “He’s with Abbie and Jack. Things seem good between them, for once.”

“I’m glad.”

“Arthur?” said Mary Beth.

He looked at her, sensing the curiosity and the concern on the edge of her voice. She wore it so often with him. They had been friends a long time. “What is it?” he said.

“I’m gonna ask you something,” she said, watching the water, “and you don’t have to answer. I won’t mind. I promise. But if you do answer, please tell me the truth. Don’t spare my feelings.”

“Go ahead, Mary Beth.”

Out on the edge of the horizon, lightning threaded the sky. The storm was moving fast. It was headed to sea.

“Mr. Mason,” she said, looking at her hands, “do you love him?”

He smoked. He finished his cigarette, tossed it to the earth and put it out with the heel of his boot. He nodded, gripping his belt, glancing to her and her freckled cheeks. “Yes,” he said.

Her breath did not catch, and she did not hesitate. She simply nodded, took a drag, and blew the smoke out in the air. “Okay,” she said.

“Mary Beth,” said Arthur.

“It’s okay,” she said. She smiled at him, through a fierce façade, as if she were trying desperately not to cry. “Please don’t apologize. I’m glad you found somebody, Arthur. Somebody decent. I surely am, as I want you to be happy. You deserve love.” She put the hair behind her ears and looked at her cigarette. “I never held no expectations for us. I know it sometimes seemed that way but I swear.”

“I know,” he said, studying her. “I know.”

“We’re friends. Ain’t we?”

“Always.”

“Good,” she said, like she was relieved. “You know I used to be filled with all these fantasies, especially when I first joined up with you boys. Knights in armor, all that. They saved my mind for many years. You always fit that bill.”

“I ain’t no knight, Mary Beth.”

“You are to me,” she said. “And I ain’t forgotten.”

“I will always protect you,” said Arthur. “Any way I can. And I am thankful for you. Taking care of me after all that nasty business, in ways that no one else would. For listening to me. You will find love, Mary Beth. If that is what you desire. I know it.”

“Thanks, Arthur.”

“You’re welcome.”

They smoked. The sky churned. “I been saving up, you know,” said Mary Beth, finishing her cigarette, throwing it into the water. She adjusted the scarf in her hair. “I got more than $800.”

“Saving up for what?” said Arthur.

“For leaving the gang,” she said, like a revelation. “It won’t be long now. I been reading a lot, about the Midwest. There are places up there I could live forever, on a much longer dime. I could get a room, with a desk. Maybe even a cabin. A place to write all these stories I been cooking up in my mind. I don’t doubt they’re terrible, but still. They’re mine. I want to make something, Arthur. I can’t do that here. Try as I been, it’s too much running, too much uncertainty.”

“I get that,” said Arthur. “And I think that’s a fine plan.”

“You should go, too,” she said, growing wistful, like she had stars in her eyes. “With Albert. He loves you. He has money. He can take you away from here. From all this. You should let him, Arthur.”

Arthur looked at her, and then he glanced back to the party where he could not see nor hear nothing but debauchery. It was a mixture of those he loved and those he no longer understood, and he knew that in time, all would draw to a close, and it would make no difference. None at all. The hour was growing late now. The night was long. He did not go to see Dutch. He breathed.

The next morning when Albert returned from his camping trip on Dewberry Creek, he opened the door to his apartment and found Arthur inside, waiting. He had been sitting on the sofa, sketching furiously, and when Albert came in, he looked up, relieved, stood and closed his journal.

“Where you been?” he said.

“Arthur,” said Albert, happily surprised. He set down his valise and his tripod, and he removed his hat. “How did you get in here?”

“I uh—I picked the lock,” said Arthur. “Sorry."

"Don't be sorry," said Albert.

"I got here late last night. You wasn't here."

“I went for a ride,” said Albert. “Don't worry. Did you find Jack? Is he okay?”

“Yes,” said Arthur. “He’s back with his family now. Thank you for asking.”

“Of course,” said Albert. “I’m relieved. It seemed so serious.”

They stood across the room from one another now, as if yet too hesitant to cross. Both of them looked at their shoes for a moment, very still in this liminal space.

At some point, Albert finally came over, and both of them sat down on the couch. Albert reached for Arthur’s hand and held it steadfastly. They looked at each other. Arthur studied Albert’s face closely and said, “So, you went for a ride, huh? You look a little windswept.”

“Yes,” said Albert. “I went out camping, just one night. Over on Dewberry Creek.”

“Dewberry Creek?” said Arthur. “That’s pretty country over there. Bold move, Mr. Mason."

“Well, we are untamed," he said, smiling to himself. "I got some wonderful shots of a twelve-point buck. I caught a fish as well.”

“You did?”

“I did.”

“Very good."

“Thank you,” said Albert. He blushed. “I got a letter from my mother yesterday.”

“That sounds nice,” said Arthur. He ran his thumb across Albert's knuckles. His whole body calm, safe. His heart was quiet. “What did she have to say?”

“A lot, actually,” said Albert.

“Oh yeah?”

The morning sun was pouring in through the windows, soaking the room and making it warm. There were some loud and joyful noises then, coming in through the wide open French doors from the bustling street outside. It sounded like a bunch of kids, getting loose, playing tag, being free.

When I started learning to drive at 17, I decided to buy my self a cheap car so that I'd be able to get more experience behind the wheel, pass my test quicker and have a car as soon as I passed my test. If we had said at the start of January 2020 that restaurants would be adding a gallon of milk, a roll of toilet paper and a head of lettuce to online orders, the idea would’ve seemed preposterous. But that might be the new norm if restaurants want to survive in the era of COVID-19.

Just how have restaurants pivoted their business models and what changes do they expect are here to stay to ride out and survive these times?

We surveyed nearly 90 restaurant owners and managers about how they’ve had to restructure their business and operating models and what marketing and promotional strategies they’ve implemented since to drive sales for survival.

Fight decreased demand with fewer operating hours, more promotions

Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit, restaurants across the country were almost entirely shuttered, leaving them with the option of either closing their services completely or providing curbside, pickup, or delivery service to their customers as a means of survival.

As a result of the nationwide lockdowns, our survey found that over half of our restaurateur respondents had to reduce their operating hours to adjust to declining customer demand and labor costs.

In an interview with Bon Appetit, Frank Chung of Henry’s Hunan Restaurant made a simple but powerful observation: “I’ll only be able to open a few hours every day for take-out because I think business will be really slow. Our main clientele are office workers and no one is coming into work.”

But just because customers aren’t there to dine at your restaurant doesn’t mean they can’t support you online. During this economic uncertainty, who doesn’t love a good deal? Especially when, according to Gartner, nearly half of consumers said their household income had already been affected by COVID-19 in the form of layoffs, reduced hours, and closures.

To drive sales outside of their restaurants and understand the new financial strain customers are now under, restaurateurs are digging deep by offering promotions and gift cards.

Staying engaged with customers when your doors are closed or hours are limited is crucial to weathering and surviving this storm. As much as 30% of restaurants could close down permanently before the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, and it’ll take resilience and creativity to avoid this fate.

Pro tips: Even as restaurants start to open up, there’s still a good number of customers who are keeping away. Continue to engage them with promotions tailored to the current situation.

Gift cards also offer a diversified stream of revenue and give customers the option of contactless payment which they can receive through email or text message. Most retail POS systems come with a set of gift cards tools that can help you get set up in no time.

Push new, creative offerings on digital and social platforms

Operational changes won’t solve all your problems; many restaurants have had to reconsider their menu mix in efforts to improve their margins for the survival of their restaurant. Some are coming up with family dinner specials while others are delving into pre-prepared meal kits.

One thing is consistent across the board: restaurateurs are all trying to figure out what their customers expect to spend and what they’d be interested in purchasing, all while weighing these new expectations against their new business economics.

As more families are staying home, customers are looking to get the most bang for their buck in order to feed more. In an interview with Restaurant Business, Molly McGrath, culinary director and chef of Roti Modern Mediterrarean, shared an opportunity to launch family meal boxes for takeout and delivery and found the result to be positive:

“We always hoped to strengthen our dinner business, and these have been a good way to introduce families and kids to Roti. I’m hoping to sustain and grow the dinner business now that I see it catching on.”

The restaurant specializes in rice plates accompanied by various proteins, toppings, and sauces and is now providing family dinners to go for customers in residential neighborhoods where some of its restaurants are located.

But it isn’t enough to just change up your menu mix—restaurants recognize that there are still customers who are wary of venturing out and are marketing their business by raising awareness where their customers are at: online. And they’re doing that through existing and free or low-cost methods, such as email newsletters, social media accounts and websites to spread word of their changes, as our survey found.

Pro tips:

Focus on your highest-margin menu items: Look at your data on your POS to determine what customers are ordering and then pare down your SKUs.

Bundle your meals: Make group ordering as visible and easy as possible. For example, “$30 dinner for three” positions your meal as a special deal. Bundling will take your labor costs down. Avoid single items unless they’re high margin.

Find opportunities to upsell: Consider sides such as drinks, desserts, and appetizers that you can throw in to complete the meal.

Use all digital platforms available to share useful and concise content: Most likely your customers are getting a bunch of COVID-19 related emails so you’ll want to make sure yours is useful information with bulleted key points that are easily scannable.

Sustain business with online delivery platforms

Where possible, restaurants have pivoted to delivery or takeout models as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As much as 25% of restaurants were forced to shutter completely during the pandemic.

Once optional for some, takeout and delivery is now a critical lifeline for restaurants. The restaurants that have survived have been the ones that were already well-positioned for—or pivoted swiftly—to delivery options to meet consumer needs.

Our survey confirmed that just as much the importance of delivery services – nearly 45% of restaurants have launched delivery services as a result of the pandemic.

According to Gartner, customers are attracted to ordering from restaurants for a myriad of reasons, mainly convenience, variety, a break from cooking, desire for certain favorites, and the desire to support local restaurants.

COVID-19 is reshaping restaurant business models

About a quarter of restaurants have also changed their pricing and business model during the pandemic.

One example is Revolution Catering, which, prior to the pandemic, specialized in corporate catering in the form of drop-off meals and full-service events for companies in the Boston area.

As a result of the pandemic, the company has since pivoted to deliver fully prepared restaurant quality meals throughout New England.

“One in four of our orders is a gift for a client or a friend/family member,” Mike Spiegel, owner of Revolution Catering, tells Software Advice. “We didn’t even see that as a thing or know it was possible. Now we’ve got our sights set on disrupting the entire food gifting industry.”

According to Spiegel, after pivoting, the company has since been able to drive its break-even figure down by 50% and recreated about 25% of its revenue within a 30-day period—after losing 100% of its revenue in mid-March.

Stepped up social media presence, and email marketing“You can see for yourself it was pretty pathetic before March.”

Worked out shipping arrangements with UPS“We now can serve nine states in the Northeast overnight. We’ve shipped as far north as Maine, and as far south as central New Jersey. Before we serviced only a 25-mile ring around Boston proper.”

Implemented daily cash flow and financial monitoring“We were not irresponsible with this before but we became hyper-aware of this. We cut nearly a dozen subscription services, reduced waste removal, renegotiated some delivery fees with vendors-the list goes on. We were able to save thousands a month here just by doing that.”

Created a new weekly meeting schedule between departments“The goal is to immediately work out food quality and consistency issues, as well as logistical problems so that things are nipped right away because each box that goes out is so much more important now. We were turning down multi-thousand dollar events eight weeks ago, and now every penny counts.”

Took professional quality food photos for the website“We learned how to take professional quality food photos for our website prior to weekly menu changes. We’re asking our team to create new weekly items now. Before this, it was quarterly with a seasonal change.”

Solidified relationships with professional vendors“We had an incredibly solid group of professional vendors who were able to help us navigate rules and programs. They made their value apparent at the most challenging times. Many of them also became advocates for us and customers in their homes.”

What can your restaurant do now to respond?

The takeaway here is to recognize the changing expectations of your customers and start thinking about how you can meet those new expectations and reinvent your marketing and promotional strategies for survival. If you’re not using online delivery, you can start today.

The moment that Charlee said “dada” Richard’s mouth dropped. Kori looked at Rob silently thanking him for hopping that plane like a mad man. Richard quickly walked over to Kori taking Charlee from her mother. Kori turned and walked to Rob while Richard tried to con Charlee into saying dada one more time.

“You know this means the world to him.”

Kori said with a smile. Rob nodded.

“I didn’t want either of you to hear about it over facetime. So are you two all good?”

Kori held up the hand that had her engagement ring on it. Rob looked relieved.

“Thank god! Emo Richard isn’t a fun person to deal with.”

“I heard that”

Richard said shooting his friend and fiance a look. Rob smiled cheekily.

“You know its true.”

Rob said with a smirk.

Later that night Kori lay in bed with Charlee while Richard was talking to Rob in the other room. Alexander wanted to stay up with Mackenzie on his own. Kori knew that her little sister would be lucky to make it through the night and wanted to give Alexander what alone time he could have.

“Enjoy some time with your fiance and baby.”

Alexander had said when Kori offered to stay up with Mackenzie. It broke Kori’s heart seeing the pain in Alexander’s eyes as he looked down at Charlee. He had missed so much of Mackenzie’s life it was painfully obvious he was regretting everything at the moment.

Kori looked down at Charlee as she chewed on her stuffed lamby blissfully unaware of everything that was going on around her. At the moment all that she was concerned with was the teeth trying to break through. Kori smiled as she running her fingers through the baby’s hair.

“I think someone needs to get tired.”

Charlee looked up at her with a little grin.

“Mama no.”

Kori leaned down pressing a kiss to Charlee’s pudgy cheek as Richard walked in shutting the door behind him.

“Rich we are in trouble?”

Richard turned around looking at her with wide eyes.

“What did we do now?”

Kori smirked.

“Charlee knows how to say no also.”

Richard winced.

“Yep we are goners.”

Richard smiled as he watched Kori’s feeble attempts of getting the baby to go to sleep. Getting into bed so Charlee wouldn’t roll off Richard reached over intertwining his hand with Kori’s.

“Did Alexander say anything about Mackenzie?”

Kori nodded,

“He wanted to be alone with her tonight. He doesn’t think think she will make it tonight. Rich I feel awful just laying her and not being in there”

Richard slowly pulled his hand away from Kori’s stroking her head. He wished in a way that Charlee was safely in her crib because the look on Kori’s face just made him want to hold her even more.

“I know sugar but something about like this let the man do what he wants. You need to relax too darlin.”

Kori nodded, looking down at Charlee who had finally drifted off to sleep. Richard reached over turning the lamp off before the baby decided to wake up for another round.

“Let’s hope my voice doesn’t always put her to sleep. Lectures as a teenager will never fun when your dad’s voice puts you to sleep.”

Around 2 am there was a knock on the door jarring Kori awake. She moaned looking over at the clock before gently shaking Richard’s shoulder.

“Honey keep an eye on Charlee. I’ll be right back.”

Richard looked up with a frown before wrapping an arm around Charlee so the baby wouldn’t roll off the bed. Kori quickly got up pulling her sweatpants back on and going to the door. Alexander stood on the other side with a dark look on his face.

“Kori…”

Kori’s heart immediately sank.

“Did it just happen?”

Alexander nodded.

“She passed peacefully. The funeral home will be here soon.”

Kori looked down unsure of what to say. She knew that Mackenzie was dying but deep down she expected the girl to pull through. Even after all the research Kori had done on Batten’s disease there was part of her that secretly hoped her sister would pull through.

“Kori are you okay?”

Alexander asked softly. Kori looked up.

“Yeah. Alexander I’m so sorry. Can I do anything?”

Alexander shook his head.

“I’m just going to be alone. If you need anything let me know.”

The next days was the longest and fastest of Kori’s life. From helping plan Mackenzie’s funeral to helping Alexander’s get everything in order for his relatives to come in Kori was exhausted!

The day of the funeral Kori had spent most of the morning alone. Standing on the balcony of her and Richard’s bedroom she sat looking out at the large yard. She jumped when Richard’s arms wrapped around her waist.

“Easy baby.”

He said, pressing a series of kisses to Kori’s neck. Kori whimpered relaxing her body back into his.

“I’m ready to get this over with.”

Richard nodded not letting go over her

“I know baby. Just get through today and we’ll be back home tomorrow.”

As the funeral started Kori sat quietly at Richard’s side while he whispered quietly to Rob. A lot of the people at the funeral Kori didn’t know. Most of the people were Alexander’s relatives but a few was some of Janet’s family, which in turn was her extended family.

When Kori looked up again her heart stopped seeing Janet. She was shocked at her mother’s appearance. The woman looked completely awful! She looked like the definition of a drug addict. Kori wrapped her hand around Richard’s before leaning over.

“Before you lose your shit Janet just walked in.”

Richard’s face instantly went livid as he looked over his shoulder to where Janet stood with another woman talking. He quickly took Charlee and wrapping an arm around Kori as Janet’s eyes fell in their direction. Her eyes winded seeing Richard giving her the biggest go to hell look imaginable.

“Bitch is brave showing up here.”

He said quietly. Kori smirked.

“Richard we are in a church.”

Richard shrugged.

“I don’t care where we are at this particular moment. That woman better not be brave enough to come over here is all I have to say.”

Kori relaxed against Richard’s chest. She smiled slightly at the protective pissed off look in his face. If she had any doubt in her mind that Richard didn’t care that would have wiped that out 100%.

“I don’t think she would be brave enough to.”

Kori said softly before looking up with a smile to see her father walk in. Kori quickly stood as Mark walked over wrapping his arms around her.

“Hi sweetie.”

“Dad you came?”

Mark nodded as he reached down taking Charlee from Richard. The baby was eagerly reaching for Mark with a huge smile on her face. Mark smiled, kissing the little girl’s head.

“Of course. This pertains to you so I wanted to be here for you. I see the wicked witch of the west is here.”

Mark said starring at Janet coldly. Janet looked at him and was looking right at Charlee. Mark frowned turning so that Janet couldn’t see his granddaughter. Kori smiled at her father deciding that she wasn’t going to let Janet ruin this for her or cause drama.

“Dad, Charlee started talking finally.”

Mark smiled looking down at his granddaughter.

“Well precious what do you have to say?”

Charlee looked around a few times with a smile before shaking her head.

“She kind of only talks when she wants to. She got dada, mama, and no out.”

Mark smirked looking at Rob.

“So it is true. You did hop a plane and came here over that?”

Rob nodded with a nervous laugh. Mark chuckled before taking a seat beside Kori. She sat talking quietly to Mark about everything that happened the last few days until Richard leaned over.

“Babe I’m going to go get some air with Rob.”

Kori nodded as Richard kissed the top of her head and followed Rob out.

“Well this is an actual nice service so far.”

Rob remarked as they walked by Janet. Richard focused on keeping himself calm and not say a word to the woman. It wasn’t until she made a comment to her companion about him being controlling. Richard froze ignoring Rob who started pulling on his arms. He didn’t want to start a scene. Richard turned looking dead at Janet.

“I would watch your mouth lady. I am not about to cause a scene at your daughter’s funeral because she deserves better. Maybe you should tell your friends how you hacked into my phone and had a sex tape released. Just a heads up, if you go about two more steps forward you will be breaking your restraining order on Kori. I don’t mind paying for a lawyer for contempt of court.”

Janet blinked a few times before looking down.

“That’s what I thought.”

Richard grumbled as Rob reached over grabbing him by the arm and pulling him back to where Kori was sitting. One look at her fiance told Kori that he was pissed.

“Rich?”

“Not now”

He said coldly. Kori watched Richard for a moment. He wasn’t blinking and wouldn’t even look in her direction as the service started. Kori sat quietly looking between her Richard and Rob who was giving her sideways looks as well. She periodically looked at Janet up had retreated to the back of the sanctuary and was sitting alone.

Once the service was over Mark glanced over at her.

“Do you want me to take little one back with me? You and Richard both look exhausted. Well Richard looks ready to kill someone and $200 bucks says I know who it is.”

Kori nodded.

“Thanks dad.”

Arriving at the hotel Richard hit the mini bar right away. Kori watched him for a few minutes before walking over and taking the glass of whiskey out of his hand. Richard watched her carefully as she undid her dress letting it fall to the floor. His eyes widened at the new lingerie he hadn’t seen before.

“What are you doing sugar?”

Kori turned pressing her behind into Richard’s crotch while taking his hands covering her breasts with them.

“Just getting your attention. Rob told me what you said to Janet.”

Richard groaned as she applied more pressure to his forming erection.

“I uh…uh…she got what she deserved as usual. We shouldn’t have anymore dealings with her at this point. Mhm sugar I can’t even think straight at the moment. Is this a new outfit?”

Kori nodded.

“I was saving this for our wedding night but I think you would enjoy this tonight. After all when we get back home we do have a lot of wedding plans to make. Things can get back to normal.”

Richard looked pleased.

“Normal. I like normal.” _______

You’d never been a good sleeper; struggling to fall asleep most nights, and when you did, it didn't last long. You’d awaken at the smallest noise, so really it wasn't a surprise that you tended to be the one waking your teammates from their nightmares. No matter where you were, you could hear your teammates struggle in their sleep; it was too the point now that you’d instructed F.R.I.D.A.Y to alert you if you didn’t notice right away.

Bucky, Steve and Tony had them the most often; after Ultron, Thor started to get them too, but he wasn’t around often. Natasha would have horribly violent tremors sometimes, but when you’d wake her, she wouldn’t want to talk, so you’d hug her awhile in silence before she’d fall asleep again.

Tony was the victim tonight. F.R.I.D.A.Y called you to his room when you didn’t wake on your own, “Miss. Y/L/N, I believe Mr. Stark may need you ma’am,” she spoke, ever calmly. Since Pepper had left, Tony’s nightmares had gotten more frequent, and caused him to thrash violently. That was how you found him; screaming Pepper’s name, flailing on his bed.

“Tony,” you called, slowly reaching out to him. His suit would appear protect him if it thought you were a threat (a lesson you only had to learn once) so you knew to keep your voice even and movements slow.

“Tony,” you repeated, gently grasping his shoulder and shaking him.

His eyes flew open and he gasped as he shot up into a sitting position, you backed away, just in case, but his suit didn’t activate. Tony looked frantically around the room before his eyes landed on you. You gave him a small smile that he didn’t return before he placed his head in his hands, still breathing heavily.

You didn’t speak as you approached his bed again, climbing on so you could kneel next to him. You wrapped your arms around his shoulders and rested your forehead on the back of his neck. You both sat like this for a while, Tony regaining his composure while you silently comforted him.

“I saw her fall. I didn’t catch her Y/N,” his voice was so small and timid, sounding nothing like his boisterous, proud facade.

“She survived Tony. She lived, and she’s alright now,” you soothed. This wouldn’t make the nightmare any better, but he had to stop blaming himself or they’d never go away.

“You beat Killian and fixed what he did to Pepper. You didn’t put her there, he did. No, you didn’t catch her, but the whole situation wasn’t your fault Tony.”

He laughed sarcastically at that before replying, “wasn’t it though? I taunted the bastard, fell for all his tricks and Pepper paid the price. I always do this; I make shit decisions and then the people I care about pay for them instead of me!” Tony was sobbing into his hands now.

You tightened your hold on him, keeping your breathing even. There was nothing you could say to make him believe you , no way you could talk him out of feeling this way, so you just held him. This was what you did for your team, you reminded them that someone still cared; even if they thought they were evil personified, irredeemable, or stupid, you were still there for them.

You never talked to the other members of the team about each other's dreams, always thought that was private, but sometimes, you’d wish you could. Tony and Steve especially; their nightmares were so similar, and you wished you could get Bucky to talk to them both; as a person who had been dropped, to remind them it wasn’t their fault. But you wouldn’t break their trust, even if you thought you could help.

After a few minutes, Tony calmed. You rubbed his back and asked him if he was going to try to go back to sleep, when he answered in the negative, you enlisted his help with breakfast; knowing that, if left to his own devices, he’d hole up in his lab, alone, and inevitably endanger himself, if not the whole compound. Plus, it was almost 5 AM anyway, you knew Steve, at least, would be up by then. So the two of you headed to the kitchen. You asked F.R.I.D.A.Y to play some of your music, which caused Tony to groan and complain, but you smiled and hummed along anyway, which caused Tony to smile, just a little.

You were halfway through teaching Tony the proper way to make French Toast (he always skipped the vanilla and chose the wrong bread) when Sam and Bucky emerged from the hallway. The two had been getting along better since moving into the compound, they didn’t like each other nearly as much as they liked Steve, but they weren’t hostile anymore.

“Where’s Steve?” Bucky mumbled around a mouthful of pilfered French Toast. You smacked his hand lightly and he shot you a grin.

“Capsicle hasn’t shown up yet,”Tony answered, handing Bucky and Sam their own plates full of toast and pointing to the syrup and butter before turning back to you. You smiled at him and made him get his own food and eat before you joined the group.

The rest of the team filtered in until Steve was the last one left. As you were about to go and check on him, he stepped out of the hallway. He looked tired and he didn’t get any food, just coffee, before coming to the table.

“You okay there Cap?” Nat asked noticing, as you did, that he was behaving out of sorts.

“Hm…” Cap looked up and met her questioning gaze before shaking his head lightly, “oh, yeah, I’m good.”

He seemed far from good and as the day went on, and the team continued to ask him if he was sure he was alright (sensitivity thy name is NOT Avengers), he seemed to get worse.

Eventually, he snapped. Poor Peter had just arrived for dinner and hadn’t known any better, but he’d asked how Steve was, and Steve bit his head off.

“I’m fine for God’s sake,” he yelled. Your head shot up from your phone and you watched Steve stalk out of the room, Bucky tried to waylay him, but Steve didn’t even meet his eyes as he hurried past. Bucky was left looking hurt and confused, you squeezed his arm as you passed him in pursuit of Steve.

“Careful Y/N/N,”

“I got this Buck.”

As it turned out, you didn’t have to search hard, just follow the sounds of Tony telling Steve off, loudly.

“You didn’t have to yell at the kid Cap! He was trying to be nice! You know ‘nice’ that thing you usually embody to the point of annoyance? What the hell crawled up your ass and died?!”

“Buzz off, Stark. I don’t have the energy to deal with you today,” Steve growled.

“You don’t have the energy? I didn’t sleep at all last night, neither did Y/N, but we aren’t screaming at people who try to ask if we’re okay!” You winced as Tony brought your name up. You were around the corner from them, close enough to step in if needed, but out of sight.

“Yeah, well I’m sure your self-induced all-nighter in the lab was completely purposeful! I was trying to sleep, I just…” Cap trailed off, losing his anger, and sighing.

“Nightmares?” Tony asked softly without missing a beat. You peered around the corner; neither of them was looking at you; Cap looked so tired, his head hung, leaning back against the wall, but he looked up when Tony had spoken. He looked at the other man for a moment, brow slightly furrowed before nodding.

“Yeah, every night this week.” Your eyes widened, why hadn’t F.R.I.D.A.Y woken you? Poor Steve, “How’d you know?”

“I have ‘em too. Had one last night, woke Y/N up,” Tony admitted, leaning back against the wall opposite Steve.

“Does she help you too?” Steve asked and when Tony nodded he leaned his head back against the wall and looked at the ceiling before he continued, “I had to tell F.R.I.D.A.Y to stop waking her up. She can’t keep losing sleep ‘cause I have the same awful dream night after night.”

“You know, if she finds out you did that she’ll flip, right?” Tony laughed lightly. You smirked but ducked back behind the corner and went back to talk to Bucky, leaving Tony and Steve to talk.

“What’s your nightmare about?” Tony mumbled a moment after you left.

“The train. Bucky..I-I let him fall…” Steve stuttered, trying not to break down in front of Tony. He didn’t meet Tony’s eyes, feeling as small as a human being possibly could at that point. It was the biggest point of shame to him; he couldn’t protect his best friend, and because of him, Bucky had become the Winter Soldier; Steve felt it was all his fault. But by not looking at Tony, Steve missed the look of shock, and then sympathy on Tony’s face. Tony swallowed and cleared his throat; he wasn’t expecting Steve to open up at all, let alone have such a similar nightmare. He looked at Steve, standing with his head hung again; he looked a mess. Normally, Tony would tease him, or make some ridiculous comment to lighten the mood, but he got the feeling that wouldn’t help here. He could almost hear Y/N in his ear, telling him to talk about it, to open up.

“I… did I ever tell you, about what happened, after New York?” Tony asked. Steve shook his head, but didn’t look up.

“There was a lot of complicated shit, but it boiled down to a mistake I made. A mistake from my past. Someone I had hurt, I guess, he came for me, but he took… he took Pepper.” Tony struggled, brow furrowed and now also looking at the floor.

“What happened Tony?” Steve’s voice was quiet, but Tony winced at the question. He had no choice now, he had to tell him.

“He’d experimented on himself, given himself a mutation of sorts. When he took Pepper, he gave her whatever he’d dosed himself with. It hurt her, but she was still alive. I came for her. She ended up something like 200 feet up in a shipyard, I told her I’d catch her… I… sh-she, fell Cap.” Tony sobbed quietly but didn’t stop, he couldn’t stop now, “whatever he’d done to her saved her, she didn’t have a scratch, and I fixed her mutation, but I still didn’t catch her, Steve. I watched her fall, thinking that she was going to die, thinking I had killed her.”

There was silence in the hallway aside from the occasional muffled sob. Neither man knew what to say at this point. Neither met the other’s eye. There was no tension to the silence, just a sort of pause. Steve recovered first, crossing to Tony’s side of the hall and grasping his shoulder. Tony didn’t look at him but spoke, quietly, “I just don’t want you to think you’re alone, Steve. You’re not. You aren’t the only one who's made a mistake, or who still feels the weight of something that wasn’t your fault, and no, before you interrupt me, what happened to Barnes wasn’t your fault. I know you’re gonna say what happened to Pepper wasn’t my fault, Y/N does too, but if that wasn’t my fault, Barnes’s fall couldn’t have been your fault.” Tony met Steve’s gaze at that point, with a bit of the light back in his eyes.

Steve bit back the argument he had waiting; Tony had a point, he was going to tell him that Pepper’s fall wasn’t his fault. Maybe... maybe Bucky hadn’t been as much his fault as he’d thought?

Unaware of this breakthrough, you’d met up with Bucky and the two of you were heading back to the towards Steve and Tony. You’d told Bucky that Steve was overtired and hadn’t been sleeping, and Bucky had immediately guessed that he’d had nightmares as well. You’d explained as much as you could without breaking your promise of confidentiality to Tony and Steve, and then Bucky and you had headed back for them.

When you’d rounded the corner though, you both paused. Tony and Steve looked at the two of you, Steve squeezed Tony’s shoulder and Tony raised his arm to Steve’s opposite shoulder and repeated the action before the two broke apart. Tony went straight for you and swept you into a tight hug, before he turned to Bucky.

“I think, I think we should talk Barnes,” he stated quietly, shocking both you and Bucky; Tony had never referred to Bucky in any way other than with a demeaning nickname.

Bucky looked to Steve, then you, and finally looked back to Tony and said, “sure, Stark. Anytime.” Tony shot him a small smile then left the hallway. Steve clapped Bucky on the shoulder and pulled you into a hug too.

“Thank you Y/N,” he said before he followed Tony out to apologize to Peter, leaving you and Bucky in the hallway, looking bewildered.

Cost/Analysis of daily driving a Mercedes W123 for 6 months

This April, I flew down to Ft. Lauderdale, FL and bought a car without telling any of my family friends. That car is a Mercedes W123 240D 4-speed affectionately known as Molly. I drove her 12 hours from Ft. Lauderdale to my home in Nashville having never really driven a stick-shift, and survived without hurting myself or having too too many embarassing moments.

The second car in the garage is my 2005 W220 S500, which has an unjust rep as the "worst S-class", and as a total maintenance hog. There is a fantastic writeup available here, and I added my experiences on that thread as well. It seemed to me that the W123 and W220 have almost polar opposite reputations, as the 123 is regarded as a cockroach of a car that will outlast society. There are examples that have passed the million mile mark, and I've heard "this was from when a Mercedes Was A Mercedes™" plenty. So I decided to do an analysis on the 240D, just like the W220. So without further ado...

Maintenance and Cost

Being a Florida car, I wasn't too worried about the car being a total rust hog. There are a few spots of paint bubbling, so she isn't perfect, but there is nothing I would remotely regard as troubling. The drive home was 12 hours, and the car tracked straight, stopped well, and the 4 cylinder NA Diesel OM616 ran happily with little blow-by. However there was a water leak and the oil was a bit old, so a shop visit was in order. They discovered that the water pump was on its way out, so a replacement was ordered and installed. The rest of work needed included a new headlight, reverse switch, and an oil change, and the total came out to $1,022.76. Reverse switch wasn't very easy to get a hold of, and the water pump upped the price. Not too bad for a first service though!!

Early August she went back to the shop for an oil change and a valve adjustment, which is a common procedure on these old diesels. Some W123 owners swear they can feel the difference after a valve adjustment, especially if it has been a while since adjustment has been made. I figured it had been at least 4 years since they had been adjusted, but didn't feel too much difference after. All together that cost $297.47

I've driven the car just over 4,000 miles in 6 months. I travel for a living, so my fuel-ups tend to last longer than if I was truly daily-driving, but a tank tends to last me about 3-4 weeks. We'll round up and call that 10 fuel-ups in 24 weeks/6 months. With the average cost of diesel being about 2.87 a gallon, and a tank being 17.2 gallons, that's about 500 bucks in 10 fill-ups, or roughly 8 cents a mile after you factor in mileage. When maintenance/upgrades is factored it, it raises to 53 cents a mile for cost of ownership.

And that's it. Compared to the W220, the lack of (necessary) visits to the shop is awesome. Albeit this is a much much simpler car to work on, and the Aftermarket community is awesome at DIY fixes, but my initial worries that buying a classic car would be a massive mistake have gone unfounded. Which comes to...

Upgrades and DIY

A few things have been added on that I wouldn't count as maintenance, or that I did myself. They do add up, so I figured I'd include them on the write up.

W123s with American headlights use sealed beams that were considered as ancient even when they were rolling off the assembly line. These sealed beams get dimmer as they get older, and I can't actually track when the headlights that were on at the time of purchase were installed. One of them went out on the initial drive home, and the second went out about 2 months later. They are both cheap and easy to replace, but I decided to upgrade them to Hella H4 halogens and lenses that are brighter, have much longer life, and don't degrade over time. The lenses are essentially stock looking, and the whole kit cost me 200 bucks

I took a dive into upholstery work and replaced the driver's seatback cushion. These cushions are horsehair, and once they decide to start deteriorating, they will not stop. My pad was so crumbled that I could feel each spring digging into my back. I removed the seat, took off the MB-tex, and replaced the cushion with one I bought online for 80 bucks. I don't think I saved myself any many, as I had to buy a couple of tools, but the experience was worth it for both better support, and confidence that I could take a seat apart and put it back together again.

I also disassembled the glovebox and center console to replace one of the center vents that had dismantled itself, as well as replaced the interior lighting on the (very basic) manual climate control panel. This cost another 40 bucks for the vent.

Ongoing issues

There are a few things I just don't feel like fixing right now. Unbeknown to me, the previous owner unplugged the switches for both the sunroof and rear window defroster, and I haven't plugged them back up yet. Sunroofs on W123s are a notorious point of failure, and mine is shut with no leaks, so I don't think I will open that can of worms. Because the car will be resting for the window, I probably won't use the defroster much either. There are also several issues with the paint that reflect the car's age. None of them show signs of getting worse or causing damage, so it will probably be going unfixed for the long-term. The vacuum-operated central locking is completely inoperative, and I live with manual locking and unlocking my doors. I could chase down the vacuum leaks during the winter, but don't know to what extent the issue is. My main concern is I will mess something up and lose the vacuum that shuts down the engine!

Should I daily a classic car?

I think it depends. I won't lie, it is incredible peace of mind to at least have another car available to you if something goes wrong. Even though nothing has, and I haven't elected to not drive the 240D in any situation, the ability to make that decision is still in your back pocket. Also, diesel is just a bit more expensive than I've wanted. But I don't get in the car wondering about overheating, electrics failing, or brakes fading. It starts warm or cold, stops smoothly or strongly, and accelerates...enough. The AC works (crucial) and the heater is strong enough to melt clothes to your skin. And the car gets compliments at stores, stoplights, and side streets, which I've never gotten to experience. I don't think the W123 is representative of every car built in 1983, but it goes to show just how great a car built in 1983 can be. Nothing rattles that shouldn't and build quality is awesome. MB-tex deserves a shoutout because I think the interior of this car will outlast me. I make fun of its slowness and how old it is, but I always find myself looking back at it, or in window reflections. And it has never let me down.

Final thoughts

Yes, the W123s are truly solid cars. They are very easy to work with, and with the right care and maintenance, they will last your lifetime, and the next owners, and the owner after that. I specifically bought Molly because she lacked some of the features that are known to have chronic issues; Mainly, the automatic climate control, electric windows, and the vacuum-modulated automatic transmission. It has been a fascinating experience going from technical powerhouse like the W220, to a bare-bones trim of a bare-bones car. While 53 cents a mile is a bit high, I'm expected that cost to continue to go down as the car is driven more and (hopefully) needs less attention. If you've gotten this far, thanks for reading! On friday 4/25 my 03 Tahoe was stolen in front of my house it was recovered the following day 4/26 about 9pm?

Hi. Recently i changed my address so i had to let the car insurance company know about that. But they charged(actually are willing to chage) me 423 pounds !! Yes, there's not a misspeling. It's 423 . As far as i ve seen, most people get charged no maximum than 50 pounds for this change. Also, there are no changes on my policy. I still have a garage, i still do the same mileage/year and so on. They even confirmed that there's no change in policy details except the new address. The new address it's in Manchester (central area) and before i lived in Bradford(UK). Now, in the mean time, i had a claim. If i would have found about this fee before, i would have cancel my insurance policy but now that i have a claim, i can't cancel it anymore and being refunded (as i paid the insurance for 1 year in one go, Not monthly). I found about this crazy 423 fee only now when i had this claim. You can't find anything about any fees related to changing the address neither on my policy papers nor on their website and online policy books. I suppose they considered this fee just as an administration fee. And i suppose they could have charged me even 10 000 pounds as an administration fee just because they can. I don't feel protected by the company anymore !! that's why it's an insurance company, to protect and take some risks out. The insurance company it's Admiral. I tryed to talk and explain them that this fee it's just nuts but they didn't agreed. The fee it's about 1/4 of the total insurance cost for 1 year. So i made a mistake. I was stopped last night and cited by a law enforcement officer for no proof of insurance.
