The ending of Dracula SUCKS because it’s both laughably anticlimactic and the peak of the novel’s racism. The biggest plot twist of Dracula is that Dracula is not a good book.

In the climax, because Dracula is asleep(tm) in his coffin, Stoker decides he has to throw in some mini bosses for the gang to fight instead— Dracula’s carriage drivers, a bunch of Romani people.

It’s one of the many areas where Stoker makes the racist subtext explicit text?

We get a “climax” where the heavily armed white heroes violently attack this caravan of sorta-armed Romani people and it’s framed as noble and heroic. (we’re supposed to Assume the driver are inherently guilty/okay to attack because they’re Romani, and other Romani people were helping Dracula in the castle chapters, and we all know Those People can’t be trusted!! etc etc) It's nearly “B*rth of a Nation” level racism.

Also not to roast Quincey— but I do love how this squad of white people armed with GUNS could barely defeat this ragtag little group of barely-armed carriage drivers, and even lost one of their members trying to do it. Stoker’s trying to frame them as noble underdogs but they come across as overpowered hyper-violent incompetent idiots who couldn’t manage a clean attack even when everything was on their side. XD

The entire novel is essentially a fantasy version of “B*rth of a Nation”-style tropes? It’s “the evil foreign race preying on our innocent white woman.” This is made extremely explicit in the scene when Mina compares her predicament to the predicaments of women in war zones who are killed by their husbands in order to prevent the foreign enemy from having sex with them. In the narrative, murdering your wife like this is framed as Good. Mina believes she should be killed like this before a Foreign Man Takes her in order to preserve her purity, and the narrative agrees with her. She is a “good English woman” because she believes she’s better dead than corrupted by a foreigner, and if she is corrupted by the foreigner her soul will be damned forever.

After all, the foreigners are evil! Either your wife is a Mina, a Good Wife who is assaulted by the poor evil foreigner, and whose purity can only be regained if you violently take revenge. … or your wife is a Lucie, a Misled Child who says she’s happy now but it’s because Her Mind isn’t Her Own Anymore and shes going to hell and she’s so poisoned by the foreigner that she needs to be put down like a rabid dog to protect the white English race.

I’ve seen people make comments about how bad it is that adaptations tend to make Dracula somewhat genuinely seductive/lovable to Mina compared to the book, which baffles me? It frustrates me that a lot of analysis is treating Dracula like a real person, rather than a character who was written in a specific way for a specific reason.

Yes it is bad that Dracula-the-person sexually assaults the other characters. But the reason Dracula-the-Character is written that way is because Stoker is writing him as a metaphor for Evil Foreign Races Preying on Our White Women. The reason book- Dracula is written so unsympathetically isn’t because Stoker is making a progressive point about sexual assault, but because he’s using Dracula as a deeply regressive symbol of the evil Foreigners having sex with white women who must be exterminated to preserve the purity of white English children.

Honestly I feel like the reason most adaptations make the Count genuinely alluring/seductive/sympathetic is because there’s really…not much to his character in the original novel, outside of being the archetypal Evil Foreigner who is Evil because Foreign, which is both offensive and also really shallow/uninteresting. Later adaptations are more interested with portraying Dracula as more tragic or sympathetic or at least more genuinely seductive because...well at least that's SOMETHING to add to this nothing character.

There’s a lot of potential in some of the concepts and aesthetics and plot points of Dracula, but most of the “deeper thematic elements” of the book are bigoted, shallow, or both.

It makes sense that adaptations have decided to attempt to give the characters depth, nuance, and interest that they didn’t have in the original novel? Or to take the aesthetics but flat-out reject all of Stoker's takes and argue with him about every single thematic element? and I am completely on board with vampire reimaginings that continuing to spit on Bram Stoker’s legacy. I hope people continue to make him roll in his grave. XD.

And again, I'm kinda surprised there were so many people during the Dracula Daily readalong acting as if the book portraying Dracula as purely evil is somehow more progressive than later adaptations portraying him as tragically sympathetic or seductive, when "questioning why the author chose to write Dracula as the monster" is kinda like "baby's first Dracula criticism." I mean that, in even in Hotel Transylvania (the recent kid's cartoon) part of the central plot is that Dracula's family is hunted down because bigoted people assume vampires are monstrous predators incapable of love. And it's not because Hotel Transylvania is a deep challenging movie, but because "let's question Why we've decided to invent this entire class of foreign predatory monsters it's okay to kill without remorse" is such a normal milquetoast uncontroversial mainstream critique of Dracula that you'll even find it in Adam Sandler children's movies. XD.

THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: Universal Pictures

SYNOPSIS: Based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker's novel “Dracula,” the film tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London. Strange events befall the doomed crew of the Demeter as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.

REVIEW: This project was bouncing around Hollywood for a bit till André Øvredal landed in the directors chair and it set sail. Over the years this chapter of the Stoker novel has been immortalized in several great films that have tackled the “Dracula” novel. In THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER we are introduced to the crew and passengers on the two week sail from Carpathia to London and the rise of Dracula.

Bragi Schut Jr. and Zak Olkewicz’s screenplay is a solid evolution of Stoker’s chapter. They jump right into the tale and the mythology as the Demeter quickly sets out of port. We are given a quick introduction to Clemens, a doctor and a man of science trying to get passage back to England. As the story progresses and we are presented more of his background story he clearly becomes a stand-in for VanHelsing, but a novice. There are a total of eight other men on the ship, a bunch of livestock, and a stowaway, Anna, who is a snack for Dracula. You could easily draw references to a classic haunted house tale or 79’s “Alien.” Other than Clemens and Anna we get a flavor for the other characters and a sense of dynamics of the ship. The film has a classic genre film feel and as such there is no depth of character that emotionally engages the viewer. The plot assumes we bring an awareness of Dracula and the rules. While the viewer might know the rules of the game, clearly these characters do not. I was surprised that Anna, who lived in the village under the shadow of Dracula’s castle, didn’t have anything to offer them to fight the demon. It does treat the material with respect and is a mature horror film that presents some of the issues presented in the novel but never fully embraces them. I think they take a couple of liberties with the vampire rules, but they are exploited in a way that I found ambiguous.

The production values are breathtaking. They built the Demeter’s interior in Germany and the exterior in Malta, and it was set in a water tank that looked out on the ocean. The ocean sequences look as good as any seafaring film with a larger budget. The creature design is a combination of prosthetics and visual effects and looks great, especially how they go about showing it the shadows and darkness, and it evolves. There is just the right amount of blood and gore, after all it is a vampire film, and it looks great. Director André Øvredal, whose credits include “Trollhunter,” “The Autopsy of Jane Doe,” and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark,” is a fan and well versed in the cinematic language of the genre and crafts a thrilling and terrifying film. The score is by composer Bear McCreary, whose TV shows such as “The Walking Dead,” “Battlestar Galactica,” “Caprica,” and films like “Happy Death Day” and “Godzilla: King of the Monsters.” He delivers another amazing composition that enhances the atmosphere and tone of the film.

The film has a solid ensemble cast. Veteran actor Liam Cunningham as Captain Elliot presents a complex character who is thinking beyond the voyage and his future, but still presents the gravitas of a veteran sea captain. Doctor Clemens is played by Corey Hawkins, with credits on the stage and screen. He does a solid job creating the character’s troubled psyche and he is believable as a man of science struggling to deal with this supernatural entity. Actress Aisling Franciosi, who plays Anna, and the young actor Woody Norman, Toby, create these likable characters that offer the viewer the opportunity to feel a little sympathy for them. Both are fighters and I found myself rooting for them right up to their bitter end.

THE LAST VOYAGE OF THE DEMETER is an excellent high seas horror epic that does a terrifying job of expanding this segment of Stoker’s novel “Dracula.” It’s a solid addition to the evolving “Dracula” mythology. I know there are some Stoker and “Dracula” fans and scholars who might be put off by some of the liberties they take in the final act of the film. However, there is enough here and is well written that they should be happy with the majority of the film. Regardless, vampire devotees are sure to love everything about the film and it will be the hot topic of their discussion for the next few weeks.

Let's talk about Dracula! Original novel by Bram Stoker published in 1897. Genuinely one of my favourite books, Dracula works as a story because it's disjointed and told through multiple narratives, Adding onto the slow burn horror of the story. Tbh I don't believe you could ever write a faithful and enjoyable Dracula Movie, Although a found footage style TV Show might be interesting. But it's characters and themes have been so misconstrued and rewritten so many times it’s hard to find anything faithful to the original. Not to mention the oversexualization of Vampires in general has contributed to a misunderstanding of the creatures.

Dracula in the book is described as a pale ugly old man with long teeth.

It's interesting to note how sex repulsed the book can be at times.

But I digress. One of my favourite things about this book is Van Helsing, Most retellings characterize him as a lonely and serious man but in the book he's actually closer to the oddball doctor archetype with weirdly pacific knowledge to the occult. He is a very charming male character which is very hard to find in older Gothic literature. (Or just writing in general)

Call me cursed but I read his description and thought “Someone with Daddy issues is projecting so hard right now.” And I’m not sorry, We all want the friendly doctor to be our father figure. It's okay.  

Oh side note! Transfusions were a recent discovery at the time so the book is full of them without regard for blood type. And that makes it so much funnier to me that literally every chapter somebody has to be stabbed with a needle to get more blood for Lucy. 

Van Helsing and Mina have the only brain cell for most of the book. Mina herself is also funny because it's very clear the Author likes her, Because every character goes out of their way to compliment her and talk about how great she is (As they should, Look at this girlboss).

Also shipping Mina and Dracula became a big thing that makes me extremely uncomfortable because of the scene that describes Dracula force feeding his blood to Mina. One if not the only Moment they shared together is extremely traumatic for Mina sooo yikes. 

I can also see where the LGBT subtext many people have associated with vampires comes from although not for healthy reasons, Dracula at one point gets possessive over Jonathan, the main character. Many people read this as gay subtext but don't look at the context, Jonathan is a prisoner in the Castle, Jonathan at this point doesn't want to be there and was just attacked by Dracula’s Brides (Who I believe are actually cousins? I might have misread that part though).

So yeah, considering how demonised sexuality is in this book anyways I don't think it's a positive idea to draw connections to LGBT rep.

But again this comes back to my point of vampires being rewritten over and over again to fit the motivations of who's telling the story. Vampires went from being horrible creatures of the night to seductive royalty, And it's not lost on me this story is about a wealthy Count sucking the blood from vulnerable women. 

It makes me quite upset how little people have actually read this book. Not only is it a very good book, it's charming and enjoyable. It's one of the least outwardly bigoted older horror Novels (LOVECRAFT GET BACK IN YOUR CORNER GODDAMNIT-)

It’s not the most Interesting Horror Novel I’ve read (That would be Frankenstein) but it’s a classic and I’ve got a soft spot for the story because of the charm of the rather goofy horror and the genuinely skilfully set ambience. 

I could talk about this Book for hours tbh and you’ll see more rambles about it, This is all VERY unorganised and messy but that's all my brain can manage today so-

A Strange Journey.

Summary: The Doctor and reader accidently stumble across a mansion in the woods and meet the strange people inside.

A/N: So this is based on @flybi91 post. A dw/rocky horror fic idea that was too good of an idea not to write. I've not written anything in a long time so excuse me if it's not great, I've been going over this since last night deciding whether or not to post it.

It is written as a oneshot but I have some ideas for some more chapters if people enjoy this.

"So then. Barcelona"! The Doctor said excitedly jumping around the console. "Barcelona"? You replied stopping in your tracks.

"Like the city? What's so special about..."

"THE PLANET"! She exclaimed, "I've been trying to get there for years with great difficulty, but you know what". She grinned at you. "I think I've cracked it". With that she pulled the lever to her right and the both of you were knocked to ground as TARDIS shook violently and made a sickly wheezing noise before the lights went out.

"Y/N! Are you okay?" The Doctor shouted, trying to grasp her way around on the dark floor.

"Yeah! Doctor, I'm okay" you shouted back, siting up and rubbing the back of your head. "What the hell just happened?"

"Not sure" she replied, "But the TARDIS is dead, she's gone" she shouted pressing random buttons and levers on the console. "This happened before. About a decade ago. I was a different man back then" she said solemnly, she touched the middle of the console and was rubbing it gently with her eyes closed. "Can you sense anything?" you stood up to join her, "No. It's. It's just a whisper. Come on old girl, give me something" she pleaded. "Please".

"Doctor, we must have landed somewhere though, we could go outside and check?"

"We could yeah" she replied, a mischievous smile on her face. She then continued to try and connect to her lost machine. "But it's much too dangerous, we could be on any planet, and outside could be any species of alien".

"You mean like Earth?" you laughed leaning out of the doors. She bounced over to you and peered over your head. "Hmm". She frowned, she licked her finger and held it up. "Yep definitely Earth, I'm getting hints of 1960s, or 70s. But there's something else, like a metallic energy in the air. I don't think I'm the only alien here. Come on then". She grabbed her coat from the rack and both of you headed out of the doors.

You and the Doctor had been walking for miles, your feet were hurting and your head felt like it was splitting in two. "You don't have any water in those time lord pockets of yours Doctor? I think I hit my head when we landed" you asked rubbing your temples. She rummaged around in her coat and pulled out a small water bottle and a vial of orange pills.

"Here these will make you feel better". You took the pills and gratefully drank the water until it was empty. "Thank you" you gasped, "I needed that".

The Doctor stopped and perched herself on a nearby fence, you bounced up and joined her. "The energy is stronger here Y/N".

"Well maybe someone nearby might have a ship, they could help us repair the TARDIS"

"Maybe, I've tinkered with her that much over the years, i don't think there's much left of the original girl" She suddenly jumped off of the fence "Do you hear that Y/N?"

"I do." You turned around to stand on the fence and tried and peer over the trees "it's singing, I can hear singing Doctor. Look there!" you pointed, she joined you on the fence again with her sonic buzzing in her right hand, "A house! Oh gold star for you y/n. Come on let's see if they take requests" she nudged your side and you both followed the road towards the house.

"Okay Doctor, this is creepy, like horror movie creepy" you made your way through the dilapidated gate and up the over grown path to the door.

"Y/N you've battled Daleks and Cybermen, a little old house shouldn't scare you. I mean yeah it's very castle Dracula, but it's an adventure" she reached for the door bell and an ominous sound reverberated through the door.

It was opened by a small hunched over man, in what appeared to be a butlers outfit.

"Hello" he said sinisterly.

"Hello" said the Doctor enthusiastically shaking his hand, "I'm the Doctor and this is my friend Y/N" she gestured to you and you gave him a small wave. "Our motor broke down a few miles down the road and we were wondering if you could help us?"

"Yes..... Yes. I think perhaps you both better come inside" he stepped aside and opened the door wide.

"He's an alien", she whispered in your ear, walking past you. "No way" you looked at her shocked.

"So. It sounds like you're having quite the party here" she gestured at the music and decorations strewn about the house. "You've arrived on a rather special night. It's one of the masters affairs" he said picking up a duster and cleaning the grandfather clock against the wall.

"Oh lucky him, I guess" you stared wide eyed at the Doctor, silently pleading her to leave.

A woman you'd not noticed cleaning the staircase then piped up.

"Your lucky. He's lucky. We're all lucky. Ahahahaha" she screamed leaning down at you over the banister.

The music from the other room suddenly picked up and the two started singing.

"Definitely aliens" the doctor grabbed your hand as you were both ushered into the hallway.

"Singing aliens Doctor. Really?" you asked, both of you trying to move the other way. "Well different planets have different languages and cultures, this might just be their way of saying hello".

You were both excorted through a pair of wooden doors and saw a group of people singing and dancing along to the music.

The group danced around you and you were separated during the chaos.

"DOCTOR!" You screamed. You and the Doctor were pushed to the opposite sides of the room as a young woman in a top hat tap danced down the middle. They carried on into the chorus again and let you go from against the wall, you ran towards the Doctor.

"Let's do the time warp again!"

"Let's do the time warp again! "

They sang in unison and collapsed to the ground.

"Are they okay" you whispered.

"I think" she grabbed your hand and walked you towards the door, "they're waiting for their next cue. You know how I said earlier that this was like Dracula's Castle?" you nodded and frowned. "Well I wasn't far off, these are the people of Transylvania, the planet, not the region." She pointed out the two of you treding carefully around the people.

"So now we know who they are and where they're from, are we staying?" you enquired. "Of course we are Y/N, there's nothing to worry about. And speaking of their next cue." You noticed the group getting up from their place on the floor and you heard an echoed tapping from a now descending elevator in front of you.

- Are Straw Hat’s ships destined to always look tiny while sailing next to other ships? I thought Sunny was actually big but I look at her now and… well…
