lesbianism? say no more, my touch starved dyke ass is here
could i please get hcs for the ghoulettes with a enby lesbian goth reader? (sfw or nsfw, whatever you prefer!!)
Ghoulettes with a nonbinary lesbian goth s/o
Cirrus (she/ze)
Cirrus's style is a mish-mash of butch, punk and goth (but in the baby bat way) with comfort being the most important.
You share some stuff if you'd like. Mostly jewelry and make-up, since it's the most gothic part of zir wardrobe.
Cirrus likes to occasionally make her own jewelry, so if you're into that, you two make jewelry together.
She likes Scary Bitches, so if you listen to those, you have karaoke parties together with Cumulus.
Correct people on your pronouns why repeating their every word and then using the correct pronouns, putting an incredible amount of pressure on them, while looking directly in the eyes of the person who used the wrong ones.
Cumulus (she/her)
Cumulus goes primarily for comfy clothing, aesthetic doesn't really matter to her all that much.
But she does admire the people who commit to a style or a subculture. And that includes you, of course.
She'd love to go look for more clothes with you, whether you buy or thrift.
She becomes really fond of the music, to the point of humming some of her favorite songs and using a few of them as a small vocal warm-up.
Corrects people about your gender and pronouns (whichever you use).
She adores the jewelry.
Sunshine (she/her)
Sunshine likes a few songs, but no specific bands.
Her style is more... scene kid meets tomboy metalhead.
But she does like gothic make-up, so she'll absolutely let you mess around with her looks.
Just mind the piercings! She loves her piercings, you know!
She'll proudly wear anything you might gift her and tries her best to find things for you, too. Especially on tour, there's always some cool stuff on the festivals they all play on that you would probably like.
We already know Sunshine's a biter. She likes biting you affectionately... but she also bites others.
Willing to bite the face off of anyone who misgenders you. Just say the word.
Aurora (she/they/fae)
While Aurora doesn't really identify as a lesbian per se, she does identify as femme and loves everything feminine.
She doesn't fully understand what goths are, but once you show her a few kinds of goths, she instantly falls in love with faerie, pastel, perky, fetish and cabaret goth styles, so bonus points if you're one of those.
They start experimenting with faer own style, settling on a combination of her previous femme style with pastel and cabaret goth style.
She loves goth dancing, fae thinks it's absolutely fun and adorable. Giggles every time.
Acts confused and asks a lot of questions if someone uses the wrong pronouns on you. That's not what your pronouns are, why are they using different ones? It doesn't make sense!
Mist (he/she)
He likes how it looks on you, but wouldn't go out of her way to change her style.
Mist is a metalhead. He likes a different kind of music than you do, but she does like Sisters of Mercy, so if you like them too, you guys can chill out to it together.
You both wear a lot of dark eyeshadow and lipstick. She'll let you add the typical goth eye-liner to his look. She quite likes it, really.
Goes to concerts with you and has a good time, but wouldn't listen to the music outside of them.
Willing to start a fight if anyone even tries misgendering you.
~

I may post vents (tags + post cuts), or political things. But most of the political things won't be controversial to people with any braincells. (Since I only reblog things pro-human rights like trans and gey stuffz).
If you're here to hate on me, welcome 1 in a 1,000, you are very special.
It is in my honest opinion that aslong as nobody is being harmed, then to leave them alone.
(Changed pinned post due to criticism regarding personal privacy. Though I feel I'm allowed to share whatever I wish to, I'm tired of people telling me to change it).

Queer book recs from IFM's editors
Mantha's Rec(s)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner Series and Tamír Triad
Any chance Mantha gets they recommend Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner Series and Tamír Triad. Both set in the same world but in two different eras, these fantasy series have become so dear to them over the years.
The Nightrunner books are part fantasy, part political intrigue, part murder mystery, all while exploring themes of belonging and identity. And while they don't have genders outside the binary, the two main characters are bi, cis men (with a little gender-nonconformity in there, too.)
The Tamír Triad tells the coming of age story of a trans girl at court in the midst of political upheaval: think Knights of the Round Table but King Arthur is trans.
Flewelling's writing is impeccable. She has a gift for character, detail, and setting that creates immersive worlds. Though not recent publications - the first book came out in 1996 - they were the first books Mantha read that showed them that the sky was truly the limit in fantasy writing.
Lydia's Rec
Tumblr media
All the White Spaces by Ally Wilkes
Not for the faint of heart, All the White Spaces by Ally Wilkes is a historical thriller in which a trans man stows away on an expedition ship bound for the Antarctic from England.
Set just after WWII, the stakes are quickly raised when the ship - the only way the expedition is getting home - is destroyed just shy of their destination. Missing most of the crew and nearly all their supplies, the few remaining members of the expedition must find a way to survive the winter in Antarctica.
Stumbling across a German expedition's camp seems like a stroke of good luck - but where did the Germans go (and would they even believe the war was over?), and what lurks in the darkness just outside of the lamp light?
Sione's Rec
Tumblr media
Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata
If you're a short story reader who loves weird, slightly dark speculative fiction (think George Saunders, Miranda July, Alexander Weinstein, Carmen Maria Machado), Sione highly recommends Sayaka Murata's book of short stories, Life Ceremony, which came out in paperback in May.
While the stories don't contain genders outside the binary, there is gay rep, asexual and aromantic spectrum rep, and neurodiversity rep.
But what really gets zir excied about this book are the themes! This is basically an entire short story collection about what's normal, who decides, and how changeable our social norms and taboos are, which opens a window into a future with many queer and neurodivergent possibilities. Ze hasn't been this excited about a new book in a very long time.

Making Differences
Long post. tl;dr: you never know where your earnest words may end up, and what they might accomplish, so keep putting them out there. (Also: I wrote a guide to nonbinary identities a little over two years ago and I’m still very proud of it.)
Back in August 2020, I emailed my day job line manager: “Hey, so, I’ll be coming back to work [after the world’s worst-timed unpaid, year-long sabbatical] in three weeks... we should probably have a plan...?”
He agreed, and decided to do a long-overdue video call that week. In our defence, we’d had a lot of Other Things to think about in that period.
Approximately 15 seconds before the call connected, I remembered that my beard had been growing out for about 6-8 weeks by that point and was not something you could pass off as a trick of the light, if you were so minded. What would this nice, supportive, but ultimately cishet, Christian, family man have to say about my incontrovertibly gender non-conforming appearance? I’d never even told him about being non-binary, always swerving when conversation got close to the topic.
Arrgh.
As the video image expanded, he leaned into the screen, put one hand to his own hairy chin (very different from the clean-shaven man of memory) and said “Huh. It’s not as good as mine!”
Me: “Well, uh, hah, to be fair, you’ve had longer to, uh, develop yours.”
Him: “How long have you been growing yours then?”
I’m not sure that there could have been a better response, if I’m honest.
We moved onto different topics after that but, like a two-ring circus, I was chatting about the departmental shifts, the changes in personnel, how everyone was coping with permanently working from home... and thinking: “Could I finally come out completely at work? Like: COMPLETELY? Would that... I hadn’t even... what...?!” and said, just before signing off, with utter lack of articulacy, that it would be good to talk about, uh, pronouns, and changing them in work, sometime.
“Oh. Okay.”
We worked the mechanism out between us, me slowly revealing my new appearance to close colleagues one at a time, most of whom were either a) relieved that I wasn’t telling them I’d suffered horrendous burn scars (thanks for that very specific leap of imagination!), b) cis men complaining mildly that my beard was better, or c) having to be dragged back a step from the notion that I was transitioning to a man and would be changing my name, etc., d) or some combination of the above. And then we decided to use November 2020’s National Coming Out Day as a good point to aim for. I was already set to write an article about coming out as nonbinary for the organisation’s LGBT+ Network (due to be shared generally with anyone in the business who cared to read it or any of the others for that day – apparently mine made some people cry).
In the meantime, I searched out the announcement that a former colleague’s line manager had made to the business when she came out as trans and forwarded it to mine – here’s a good template, and yes: the annoucement coming from you will help legitimise it. At which point, it became clear that my boss and colleagues were going to need some further guidance from me.
“I was thinking of writing a thing about how to use pronouns...”
“Oh!” He was nakedly relieved. “Yes, pronouns. That would be great. Thanks!”
No problem. I knew how to use my own, and how to communicate that clearly. No worries. One page about ze/zir/zirself, with a general background on neopronouns. Coming right up.
It occurred to me that I didn’t know whether any of my (ostensibly uniformly cishet) colleagues had any idea why why someone would use third person singular pronouns other than she/her or he/him, so I added in a bit about nonbinary identities. A couple of pages should be fine, right? The nonbinary identity section grew, and split into subsections: definitions, history, legacy, how much more common such a thing is in cultures other than “Western” ones.
Maybe it needed more context. After all, to understand nonbinary, you probably need to understand binary trans identities. A new section blossomed.
In order to understand transgender identities, you need to understand gender identity. Okay. Another section. Let’s throw in all the definitions re: sex, gender, cis, trans, nonbinary... with some links to other resources.
You know what this needs? Diagrams (id in alt-text). And a contents page. And a glossary.
Tumblr media
Honestly, I’m amazed it’s only thirteen pages long...
Anyway, thing is: it’s gone a LOT further than any of us ever imagined. It started with people on Facebook saying “Well, I don’t understand [non-binary people/ the need for gender-neutral language]!” in various groups/ on other friend’s posts, so I’d sweetly offer them the guide. (Turns out treating what can look like huffy denial as a good faith request for more information (with bonus diagrams) gets many more positive results than you’d imagine.) Then I idly posted the link in a couple of more friendly places. And THEN it started getting weird. “Can I share this with my colleagues?” Sure. “Can I bring this to my kids’ school?” Go for it. “I’d like to circulate this as a resource at the NHS Trust I work for.” Uh. Okay! “So, I saw [the guide] on Twitter. Can [organisation I greatly admire] use that as guidance for our organisation?” Buh, uh, yeah! Please! “My wife is a prison psychiatrist, may I share it with her?” Blimey. By all means.
And then the more personal stories started coming back: “You made me realise something about myself.” “I shared this with my family and they understood.” “We’re in love and your paper helped me reconcile that.”
Wow.
This little guide has gone a lot further than I ever imagined it might.
Today a senior colleague told me, in passing:
fwiw I shared your pronoun guide with my (very old white cis hetero) choir and it has generated SO many good questions
so there are choir grandkiddos all over the world thanking you for their grandparents being more awesome
Which, considering I was braced for an awkward business change management conversation, was not where I was expecting to end up this afternoon, emotionally speaking.
If I was doing this from scratch now, I suspect there would be differences (a longer glossary; an excursion into intersex identities, maybe? definitely better diagrams...), but then, a lot of what I know now came from doing the research for the guide, so maybe not so much! But one thing is for sure: I’m never going to take the impact of words shared freely quite so lightly in future.

Feverish Understanding.
A snippet of TSR's MC and Benefactor, a year after the tragedy.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
"Go away." I groan out with difficulty, the scratch at the back of my throat leaving me less than hospitable to whoever is crazy enough to knock on my door.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
Jesus fucking Christ. I lift my heavy eyelids open and glare at the wall in front of me.
The knocks on the door are still three, but there is a rhythm to it; the first knock comes out hard, but the second knock is softer than the first.
Then the third is just a vicious bang, like the person put a lot of power to make it as loud as possible.
Only one person knocks this way.
I move out of my bed with my blankets curled around me, my hands gripping the fabric as I waddle my way out of my room to the front door. Using one hand to hold my blanket together and the other to grab the door knob, I swing the door open.
"Hello, little nightlight!"
Of course.
I stare at Benefactor, with zir trademark grin and a plastic bag full of unknown items. Ze is in a suit again, this time with a navy blue color. The tie around zir neck is of a dark green color again, another trademark of zir.
I frown quizzically.
"Benefactor," I start, "I didn't know there's another mission today."
"Oh, there isn't." Ze lifts the bag up as emphasis for...well, something, "But I figured I drop by my favorite beneficiary."
"I'm your only beneficiary."
"And you know I only pick the best." Ze counters my statement off lightheartedly, "Mind if I come in?"
I open my mouth, ready to give a response. But ze doesn't even wait as ze strolls in, easily so given how my body feels like a lump right now. As if ze's aware of it, Benefactor grabs me by the biceps and holds me steady before pursing zir lips together.
"Wow, you really are sick."
I swat zir hands off of me. "I'll manage." Despite my words, Benefactor doesn't seem the least bit interested in leaving my apartment. Rather, ze moves to close the door behind zim before trying to drape one of my arms around zir shoulder.
"Come on, be a good employee and let me handle you."
"Who are you, my-" My words get cut off, something tickling my throat hard enough to unleash a coughing fit.
"Tsk tsk tsk. Really now, nightlight, you should have called."
"Call my boss that I can't do my work because I'm sick?" I scoff. "Unethical in our society, don't you think?"
"But I'm not like other bosses, am I?"
I cough again and the phelgm that has been in my throat for a while gets ejected onto my tongue. I furrow my brows and Benefactor manages to grab a tissue while walking me to my couch. Once I sit down, ze offers the tissue to me. I grab it. "Thanks."
"I already told you that sick days are allowed."
"And I think I told you-Mmph!"
I find myself holding a stick between my lips. I look down, just in time to see the digitized thermometer as the numbers go higher and higher until-
"41 degrees." Benefactor clicks zir tongue and I rip the thermometer out of my mouth.
"You-cough!-Wouldn't it kill you to cool it with the mo-cough!-mother hen act?"
"Oh come now, does it kill you if I have a heart?"
I open my mouth to respond but all that comes out is another series of coughs. I take a moment to glance up at zir face, the way Benefactor has that expression of uncertainty.
"You must rest, nightlight."
"I'm..." The heat on my face and the dizziness seems to increase.
"Nightlight? Oi, nightlight!"
My vision turns black soon after.
~~~
Something is stroking my head. There's nothing dangerous about it.
The hand is coarse, but it's also gentle and soothing somehow. I sigh, sinking myself into that warmth.
It's like Ittania is the one stroking me. But this hand is much too large for it to be hers.
The hand disappears but what comes after is something soft covering me. It brings the picture of Maverick tucking me in.
"I'll be right back." Someone tells me. This voice has a soft tone, like Rydigan's. But it is too deep to be his.
A gentle squeeze on my hand. The strength is stronger than Enid's, but no less warm. I fell asleep before I even realize it.
The next time I gain a sense of consciousness, the smell of something boiling forces me awake.
Who's cooking?
I open my eyes wearily and face the ceiling, the setting on one of the light sources in this room on a dim brightness. I still smell the scent.
It reminded me how it's been a year since I lost my sense of smell for food. Or taste.
They all just taste empty to me.
I will my body to move, to sit up from my bed and fight against the fever that plagues me. A heaviness weighs in my mind but I pay no heed.
I raise my eyes and find the figure of Maverick sitting on the lone chair in the room. I can still remember that disapproving gaze of his - a mixture of worry added in.
"I don't need rest." I mumble to him, yet knowing him to be merely a conjured up imagination.
The figure doesn't say a word. I get off my bed and head for the door.
The one standing in my way for it is Ittania now, with her arms crossed and a pout on her face. I move my hand for her.
She slips away from me, leaving me with the cold air instead of her body's warmth.
"[Name]..."
I don't need to turn around to know it's Rydigan. I grab the doorknob and swing the door open.
And Enid is there, staring at me.
A part of me still aches. But I have dance this tune much too often. I close the door behind me, keeping my body away from hers.
I still feel cold from my attempt with Ittania.
I make my way for the kitchen with silent steps, following the source of the smell until I see Benefactor.
Ze's wearing a soft green apron, with hand stirring a pot full of soup and the other holding a bowl.
"Still there?"
I sigh at zir question and step deeper into the room till I'm near zim. "Yeah."
Benefactor nods in understanding. Ze knows I have ghosts hanging onto me, no matter how many therapists, drugs or treatments I get. Whatever therapists that didn't try to scam me for my money usually said this was my survivor's guilt talking, that I was traumatized over being the witness and sole survivor of a tragic tragedy.
Benefactor, who abhorred their assumptions, told me it was simply me not wanting to let them go, that I felt more guilt in not being there for them than outliving them.
I couldn't agree with zim more
"You cook?" I start a conversation with zim and Benefactor doesn't bat an eye.
"The fact you ask me that means I'll have to do so more often." Benefactor pours the soup in a small bowl, the liquid releasing hot steam. Ze passes the soup to me. "Remember to blow before drinking."
"I'm not a child."
Ze chuckles. "Of course not. I'm reminding you as an adult."
I roll my eyes at that and blow on the surface and edges of the liquids before taking the smallest sip. Much to my surprise, the soup tastes...fine.
No, rather than fine-
"How is it?"
"I can taste this."
Benefactor nods, pauses then asks again. "Do you truly?"
"It's not a lot," I start, "but the fact I can taste even the salt is something."
Benefactor chuckles. "I'm not surprised. This had been an old recipe, one of a kind."
"Then how did you learn it?"
Ze stirs zir spoon into the soup, mixing the ingredients and spices within. "Someone taught me to."
I furrow my brows. "That's vague."
"I've always been vague," Ben answers without much to reveal any deeper meaning on that. I watch zim stir, again and again...
"What were they like?"
Ben stops stirring. A stony silence.
I look at zir face but it's an unreadable one, unlike the usually mad grin ze adopts. But zir black eyes remind me of what I see every time I look in the mirror since the incident.
I open my mouth. "It's okay if-"
"They were beautiful."
I stare blankly at the words Ben speaks out. The first set of words to escape zim. But more than that, zir black eyes have softened considerably. It's like the inky, black void turns calm and gleams with a light I've never seen before.
Then ze turns to me and zir gaze darts to my bowl.
"Drink up before it gets cold."
Okay I’m on another thought train and you are the designated person to travel with me on these trips. So. Consider. Reverse omens, right? Classic. Sometimes it’s all the angels and demons flipped, sometimes it’s just the husbands. But consider. Reverse omens but ONLY ineffable bureaucracy gets switched. If anything I think this has the possibility to be the MOST interesting variation of this au because, like, if only Aziraphale and Crowley are switched it changes some things but they’re like…middle to upper-middle class in terms of ranking? Not much about the structure of how things work in heaven and hell changes. Everyone gets switched? More variation but arguably too many moving parts and characters to keep track of. Just Beelzebub and Gabriel (or as Beez would probably called according to our headcanons Zuriel. And …whatever Gabriel is called in this. Any thoughts?) get switched? Throws the whole system into chaos! Like here’s how I see it. Season 1 Gabriel was a total asshole. No doubts about it. Heaven was institutionally fucked up and half of it was probably his fault. Beelzebub though? I’ve always had more of an impression that hell was bad because it’s, y’know, hell. Not that Beelzebub themself was an awful boss. Like aside from killing Eric that one time and yelling a bunch they actually seem like a pretty fair boss. Just evil because that’s their job. So like in this universe hell would be like…infinitely worse. But heaven? I feel like it would actually be substantially less fucked up with Beelzebub calling the shots. The other archangels and the metatitty would likely still cause problems as always but I genuinely don’t think it would be as bad. Crowley likely has a bunch of trauma now so oops but like Aziraphales boss is pretty chill so he likely isn’t as messed up as usual. They probably do still have that firm belief in Armageddon and all that but there probably less “we’ll kill you if you don’t go along with this. pick a side Aziraphale” about it and more “Look man I’ve been ignoring you and my brothe- (yes I’m bringing ssiblingzz shit into this. You probably know my brainrot well enough by now to have guessed I would.) Crowley’s shit for millennia I can’t do that any more. It’s time to fight. Please stop being stubborn I don’t wanna have kill you you’re the only bitch I respect up here.” (Beelzebub has always seemed more aware of Aziraphale and Crowley’s situation than Gabe so I kind of think in this situation they’d actually be the type to turn a blind eye to it?)
I do have more thoughts but I need to make food so enjoy this for now and share any of your ideas. I’ll probably be back soon with more.
OOOOOH WAIT YOUVE GOT A POINT THERE- I think Gabe would be some demon like perhaps Camio (from googling, he seems to be "Demon of persuassion and communication", which seems very up his alley, and his Wikipedia article mentioned him being leader of a bunch of demons, so it makes sense-), and he'd treat Hastur, Shax, and Ligur like he treats Uriel, Michael, and Sandalphon. Beez would for sure be dry, and tired, but I think ze'd be a pretty good boss too- the other Archangels may treat zir with an actual respect! ze might also give Aziraphale some slack for interacting with Crowley, since a) it's zir brother, and b) ze might understand how he feels 👀 Demon!Gabe (Cammy?) tho, he'd smell more of plastic-promises, be more manipulative and conniving, and maybe even be more in his element, cuz being a demon doesn't take a "I'm smart and mighty, follow me" mentality, it takes an obey-or-die mentality. I mean, "t-o-s-t...e. TOAST!!" put great emphasis on that ADHFH- (also him possibly being considered as Lucifer's brother? and fellow starmaker with Angel!Crowley?? SO MANY ANGST OPPORTUNITIES-) however, he would probably be extra with keeping track of the intentions of Crowley's miracles, and yeahh poor Crowbro may be kinda frucked up even more-
I think once he sees how Zuriel actually cares about him and sees him as someone other than a big scary demon, as an actual friend and companion who understands him, he puts down his guard and fight-or-flight, and changes for the better with zir. (maybe he didn't particularly enjoy having to manipulate and scare others into doing what he'd been ordered to do, but had to in order to survive? or maybe he and his possible brother team up and are conniving little shits, whatever you think is best ^^)
Trivia
Guppy is right-handed, but working towards being ambidextrous.
Zir listens to music sung in other languages or metal to focus, annoying whoever they share a workspace with.
Has a more dark sense of humor, but hates that that sort of stuff makes xem almost laugh.
Spent most of zir spare time with Bell, and has picked up a couple Russian words and their knowledge on cryptography.
Surprisingly xe is a good cook and baker, spending time learning different recipes especially ones that Bell remembers enjoying from their childhood.
AN : I'm going to be making xyr backstory a separate post, since it's still a work in progress. I might post a small bit about Guppy's current concept/idea for their place in the story.
I also took inspiration from @/kaitaiga and @/sleepyconfusedpotato COD OC posts. Which is the second time I've taken inspiration from Sleepy, first time being my COD MW age head canon post.
Kez stood at the end of the hospital bed, staring down at zir husband with a numbness ze hadn’t felt in years. Since the brothel, before Vincenzo got zir out of there.
It had been hours since Vincenzo got out of surgery, and he was still not awake. The doctors were certain he would pull through, and Kez couldn’t stop zirself before they snarled, “He better.”
Vincenzo had to wake up so ze could yell at him, grab him by the throat and send him to hell zirself for that stupid fucking move he pulled back there. He had to wake up because too much was riding on him succeeding for him to fucking die.
“Ms. D’Amore.”
Kez blinked and released zir hold on the footboard of the bed, shaking out zir hands as ze turned to face the owner of the voice behind zir. Ze was getting distracted, not even hearing someone coming into the room, and that was dangerous. This hospital wasn’t on enemy turf, but it wasn’t on Vincenzo’s either; ze had to be alert.
Luckily, it was only Tig, one of Vincenzo’s boys, his most trusted bodyguard and enforcer.
“You were saying something?” Kez asked after a few long moments, and Tig’s face changed. It was a sympathetic expression, and Kez had the very uncharitable urge to smack him for it.
“There was a situation earlier, down at Yoyo’s club. Carver’s people showed up and had to be dealt with,” Tig repeated, and Kez’s hackles raised. Fucking vultures, already circling. Or maybe the more accurate comparison would be sharks, scenting blood in the water.
“How serious was it?” ze asked, turning zir gaze back to Vincenzo on the bed.
“They were put down. Expeditiously,” Tig replied, and Kez nodded.
“How many civilian witnesses?” ze asked next, dreading this answer most. Civilian witnesses usually meant the cops would come sniffing around and would need to be bribed. Ze hated dealing with cops.
“None,” Tig replied, and when Kez shot a look over zir shoulder, he raised his hands defensively. “It happened in Yoyo’s office. Winters was with her, they just needed help with clean-up.”
Kez took a deep breath through zir nose and let it out slowly, nodding once. “Go to the club. Both of us being seen here will only make them bolder.”
Tig didn’t move. “I shouldn’t leave you here alone,” he eventually said, and anger rose hot and bitter in Kez’s throat.
“You will do as you’re fucking ordered, Faulkner,” Kez bit out, wringing zir hands around the foot board of the bed again.
“Boss wouldn’t like—”
“If Vincenzo wanted me to give a shit about what he would’ve liked, he wouldn’t have gotten himself shot,” Kez all but snarled, whirling on Tig and crowding him against the door. “Now, let’s try this again, shall we? Go. To the club. Now.”
Tig stared down at zir, expression closed off and tense before he nodded once. “On it, Boss.”
With that, he slipped out the door and left Kez in the room alone with zir husband.
Returning to the bed, ze stood at the side of it and stared down at Vincenzo. He looked wrong, almost small against the stark sheets, his hair an uncharacteristic mess and the hospital gown the wrong shade of blue for his complexion. He was alive, but barely, and it was terrifying staring down that possibility.
“You hear that, Vincenzo? They’re already coming for everything you built,” Kez bit out, low and quiet as the veil of numbness briefly parted, just long enough to feel the ache of zir heart shattering, and tears sprung to zir eyes.
“I love you.” “I wish you didn’t.”
It was the last thing they said to each other before Vincenzo lost consciousness, succumbing to the blood-loss. How could that man be choking on his own blood and still manage to tell Kez he loved zir? It was insane, something out of the terrible romantic dramas Vincenzo pretended he didn’t watch. And yet he did it, and Kez didn’t respond in kind, and now he might never wake back up.
“You need to wake up, Vincenzo,” Kez continued, trying to keep zir voice even as ze slipped zir hand into Vincenzo’s. “It’s all going to fall apart.”
That wasn’t true, necessarily. Or more, that wasn’t the real reason behind that grasping, clawing thing inside zir. Kez didn’t give a shit about the Organization, the Family.
Ze cared about Vincenzo. Ze cared about them, and the thought of them becoming just Kez made it feel like ze was being skinned alive.
Before ze could stop zirself, Kez crawled up onto the bed and curled around Vincenzo, pressing a wobbly kiss to his shoulder.
“You need to wake up because I can’t do this without you, Vin,” Kez whispered against his shoulder, finally letting a few tears escape as ze tangled their fingers together in zir lap. “I need you, Vin. Please, wake up.”
CONTENT WARNING: transphobia, other prejudices, suicide/murder, violence, family and religious trauma
I am going to tag with "transphobia" for now, but please let me know if there is another tag you need, especially considering how curious the human mind gets. Anon is on if that's your preference.
And for the record, I am not trans.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Irony being that she blocked me yesterday (TDOV) for saying there are reasons to include pronouns in your info besides being trans after this:
Tumblr media
Well, lady, I'm long past silence, period, with people who refuse to realize that they are perpetuating the same sorts of dehumanizing behaviors they would likely call horrendous when safely viewed through being decades removed from it. It's theoretically no longer acceptable (wantonly and unapologetically - you have to at least pretend there was some other reason... like being trans/gay) to murder, ostracize, belittle, etc., people for their religion, or skin color, or ethnicity, or political orientation, or or or...
I know it happens everyday. I'm a lot of things, but stupidly naive isn't one of them. Not my point here -
And that point is, that openly making fun of, demeaning, or verbally abusing a particular group of people generally only happens when the person doing it knows they will have at least some community support. This is true in people from the moment they can toddle around with enough balance to hit the kid who has the toy truck they want. The 2-year-old gets upset not because of empathy with the other, but because they got caught and in trouble.
Empathy develops to some extent for most. But not all. 🤷‍♀️ And many adults never seem to escape the desperate need to be part of an in-group, and potentially dehumanize or disenfranchise an out-group to be given that part.
While being "normal" gay/lesbian (aka, "stop complicating things and get in the box we've assigned you!") has slooooowly begun to swing closer to being mainstream acceptable or at least somewhat tolerated (and I would dearly love to take a stick to "love the sinner, hate the sin" bullshit), those who do not fall neatly into such categories are still stuck fleeing the field of open season.
I do have a question, though, for those who mock gender identities, pronouns, etc. -
My grandmother died 13 years ago. She grew up in the rural Southeastern US, born in the 1920s. She supported the Civil Rights movement.
But she would not let POC use the bathroom in her house.
My question is: do you think this acceptable? Do you think it is okay to use a particular time, place, and social norms to justify continuing to support and perpetuate microaggressions that were seen only 60-odd years ago as normal?
If you would find it demeaning and horrifying that there are white people who continue to refuse to let black people pee in their toilet, answer me honestly:
How is it not just as demeaning and horrifying to refuse someone's preference for what you call them, in names, or pronouns, or both?
"But I never actually hurt anyone!"
Yeah - neither did my grandmother.
"Look, it's funny. Sorry. But it is. What the fuck is a Ze/Zir? Sounds like some crazy lesbian sci-fi move. 🤣"
Verbal aggression is still aggression.
And here is what I said that got me blocked:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Human history is full of people who shrug and accept the status quo, people who look the other way, and people using the former behaviors to justify their own. Mocking and demeaning seem "harmless" - until they aren't.
"Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?!" asked Henry II, frustrated that his new Archbishop of Canterbury was being difficult. After all, Thomas had been picked specifically so that he would side with the king and nobilty over the pope and church! And now he wasn't cooperating. At all.
And maybe the quote above isn't quite how it went. The Zapruder manuscript has yet to be found. 🤷‍♀️ But he said something while grumpy and sulking.
And by the end of 1170, Thomas Becket's brains were splattered all over the altar at Canterbury Cathedral.
I'm not saying one obscure author mocking pronouns is going to end up with anyone murdered. Almost certainly, it will not. But such microaggressions can snowball. If more and more people find more and more dehumanizing behavior acceptable... where does it stop?
With heads smashed open before a church altar? With the wanton murder of thousands through Crusade? With civil war and invasion? With slavery and genocide? With forced marriages, chemical castration, jail, banishment?
All have happened.
But whatever your personal stance on pronouns... even just mocking, arguing that the trend of choosing gender and pronouns is "absurd," may leave you one day wondering if anything will be capable of scrubbing away the stains it may leave on your hands.
Ask yourself what your grandchildren might think of your behavior, one day.
And for anyone reading while dealing with your own trauma and self-harm, please reach out, if at all possible, to people who can help you. You deserve to be safe, and respected, and loved.
You deserve to live. And I hope we can keep working together to make that a life you'll love to live. 💖🏳️‍⚧️
Drat, I just realized that I let the 10-year anniversary of my first seeing Scott Alexander's writing pass unrecognized by me. It must have been, most likely, January 13th, 2014 that a distant Facebook friend (likely friended from certain philosophical-discourse-ish Facebook groups years earlier but I already couldn't remember; we've certainly never met) posted Scott's Slate Star Codex essay "A Response to Apophemi on Triggers".
Mind you, this isn't the most important 10-year anniversary for me this year, as I didn't follow up on learning who Scott Alexander was or familiarizing myself with Less Wrong or the rationalist community until my spring semester was over several months later, sometime in Math 2014, and I didn't (re)adopt the handle Liskantope and start participating in any way until a couple of months later still. When I first read "a response to Apophemi" ten years ago, I'm not sure I registered the name of the author, and I distinctly remember assuming that Slate Star Codex was some sort of community blog or forum, perhaps through glancing at the archives and seeing an implausible number of posts for only one author, and more likely because most of my exposure to "the blogosphere" had been through community blogs / online magazines / something of that sort (e.g. Feministing, Jezebel, Freethought Blogs). But reading a blog post like that was an absolute revelation to me, and I still have fairly vivid memories of some of my thought processes as I went through it section by section. I recall forcefully filing it away in my mind as "I need to follow up on the source of this to see if there's more, but not until this new semester is over and I have more time."
The revelation for me came from not only the (honestly rather earthshaking) event of this being the first article I ever read (as opposed to the occasional poorly-calibrated Facebook comment from that one friend) arguing against the general SJ mentality of the time (I was introduced to the term "Social Justice" through this essay and had internally been referring to it by several other terms up until that time; "woke" wouldn't show up until several years later), and eloquently at that, and not seeming to come from a conservative or otherwise obnoxious viewpoint. It was also that I had just never encountered anyone who wrote quite like this, with so much genuine politeness and compassion for the other party whose views they were arguing against and yet so rhetorically forceful against them at the same time, with a particular combination of intellectual meticulousness, and easy-to-read, semi-informal, lightness to the writing style, through which the general good character of the writer palpably comes through.
(Well, the brief paragraph about "hosting the black flag" is pretty sinister actually, and I prefer to think that Scott was being carelessly hyperbolic. I don't think I took any notice of it on the first or second reading during 2014, though. At the time I had no idea who the "Heartiste" was that Scott was referring to.)
It's always interesting to reread something from a full decade ago and think about how long that is in "internet years" and how ways of talking about certain things has changed. Scott used the ze/zir pronouns which were (unfortunately) still very popular at the time but, as I recall, not for much longer, and he switched to they/them within a few months of this. He seems to use transsexual interchangeably with transgender (as I remember I kind of did at the time as well) and even used cissexual, which I didn't recall was ever a word. And, of course, although he discussed racism as a name-calling word quite a bit, he basically used "SJ" and "feminism" quite interchangeably, reflecting a perception I shared throughout the first half of the 2010's of SJ being essentially equivalent to (the popular internet form of) feminism.
It's still kind of a mystery to me exactly who Apophemi was. Okay, looking back at their post that Scott was responding to, it seems they were also going by Cyrus Alexander, and were an Oberlin student at the time. But, given that once I got into rationalist community stuff a few months later, I basically never heard anything about them again, and their Wordpress blog's most recent update is from only half a year later, I have to wonder what it is about their blog or this particular essay demanded so much of Scott's attention. Apophemi's post isn't even particularly substantial or hard-hitting or well-written; why did it carry so much weight? Was it just that Apophemi was directly attacking the rationalist community and got a critical number of shares and reblogs? Was Apophemi just a temporarily famous figure in that corner of the online world, rather like the Tumblr-user Hotel Concierge was for a brief period around a year later before becoming almost forgotten? It is interesting that only two (arguably three, counting Ozy, mentioned multiple times not by name in Scott's piece) characters were involved in the first big controversial rat-community-related essay I was exposed to, and then one of them immediately and permanently disappeared from my view.
EDITED TO ADD: I also forgot to mention that Scott's "response to Apophemi" explicitly describes the cancellation attempt against him when he was editor of his college newspaper, and as far as I know, this is the earliest time Scott explicitly talked about this traumatic life event (except that he probably talked about it in his LiveJournal at the time it happened, but as he had locked the pre-college-graduation period of his LJ right before I came across it -- likely primarily because of this incident! -- I and most others have never seen it). He (understandably!) pretty much never mentioned it so explicitly again in the next decade, so my very first introduction to Scott included knowing this about him while I don't think that many among his bulk of later fans did. But it's an interesting (probable) coincidence that, as of several days ago, he first described the event again in his January 24th post on trauma/politics, ten years later to the month.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is lospearl! ze's a really tiny lunacy harbinger who's more or less indifferent about the world overall. i wanted to go with a more alien vibe for zir design, rather than the usual angel or plant stuff i use! (that and the bit where ze looks up and realizes there aren't any stars in the sky just Hit me for some reason. that must have felt so empty.)
ze doesn't really care about shian, but ze's polite enough to the child anyway. might as well keep them content, it doesn't matter in the long run. very little does.
rather than ears, ze has dangly antennae! its a weird thought i had, but i like it. i also really like the skull mask.
Short first meeting fic of my s/i and P ♡
Tumblr media
A smaller puppet than those around it shadowed another of its kind. Determined to keep them in its sights they kept just enough distance not to be discovered. The other puppet was dangerous, zir had seen them rip apart fellow puppets left and right in the streets of Krat. The tiny puppet had a mission to fulfill, Grand Covenant or not. The king had been counting on it.
It was fairly easy to keep the male puppet in their sight. Short black hair, brown elegant shirt with darker pants was distinct from the dark, destroyed streets and buildings. Shine from the katana wielded as he ran.
The stalker of puppet collided with broad, heavy back made of metal. Brief stumble backwards.
They gulped. Cool metal against their neck, not cold, but pressure added made zir wary. Fierce, captivating blue eyes stared into its soul.
Their ticking hearts tick in unison, tick tock, tick tock.
Slowly, the edge of the katana lowered, the stare softened by no immediate danger.
Blue eyes radiated curiosity.
"I'm not going to attack you."
Nod.
"I'm Ender."
Another, quick nod. Fluffy,short,black bush of hair bounced.
"You don't have a name?"
This time the puppet shook his head.
"Well, you do fit Romeo's description.."
At the mention of King of Puppet's real name, the young man's eyes lit up. Ender could tell he had at least seen Romeo before.
"I was supposed to find Carlo.. or you. I had message to give, but I know I'm too late, he's gone. Others puppets have been attacking me all this time. If only there was safe haven.."
Words safe haven caused the puppet to react again. His glove-covered hand beconed Ender closer. As zir did so the man turned around and jogged ahead. Ender followed, but once again stumbled onto the other puppets back.
Their mechanical parts whirred and the puppet turned around. His metal hand, attached with small,round white shield, took Ender's more human-like arm and began dragging zir to where he wanted to go.
Ender kept their mouth shut. Ze knew this puppet was leading them to safety and the strength of the hold had them at strange ease.
The grand double doors, decorated with gold and painted green, barring access to Hotel Krat, stood before the puppet duo. Only then, the puppet with no name, let go of Ender and pushed the doors open. His parts clicked and whirred, the doors whined, but they opened before his strength with ease all the same.
A gentle woman, with blue hair and dressed in blue from head to toe, greeted the pair.
"Welcome back, Gepetto's puppet. I see you have bought another survivor."
Ender followed this puppet's movement, now claimed to be someones own, like property. They had not uttered a single syllable and only nodded to the woman who introduced herself as Sophia.
Cricket noises. "Don't worry about P, my pal. He doesn't talk much. Gemini at your service." More cricket noises, as the yellow lamp attached to the puppet, now dubbed P, shone in sync in his words, mimicking speech.
P. Such simple name. And yet, no name at all. Nickname at most, something to call him by the people around him, gathered here, in this grant hotel, the last bastion of humanity and puppets alike who were broken from Grand Covenant or survived the horrors from Krat's streets.
Ender did not know what to do, with such grand, fancy place. Ever since their ego had awakened, their skills with smooth conversations were lost cause. P was such enigma and he had helped zir, who Ender followed them upstairs, to front of old man with grey hair and stylish outfit.
Ender did not remember much, only they came beyond Krat, vague memories of refined lady who owned them. They could not tell how they ended to Romeo's care in Estella Opera House but Ender knew their friendship with Romeo was the spark that broke the hold and rules of Grand Covenant.
They listened closely as the elusive Geppetto had conversation with his son. Ender could not tell why, but the man didn't elicit loving father to them. From what little the small puppet knew about humans, they would not willingly let their offspring into battles and dangerous streets. Love was caring, not wanting someone to be hurt. Geppetto did the opposite, no matter how he claimed and pretended.
Ender's mechanical heart stirred as they stared at P. Their parts whirred and ticked, but in such a way Ender could not name why. He seemed oblivious to Geppetto's acting, the sinister undertone of his actions. As they stared and noted P had freckles underneath his blue eyes, they vowed to protect him from his father, his creator.
While we've heard a lot of the Lance/Arthur poly, I'm wondering what are the dynamics for the other polyamorous optio s like?Particularly Arthur/Gwen, I've been thinking about that one since I first saw it was an possibility.
Arthur and Gwen is an interesting dynamic, but it’s definitely the sweetest of the polys. Arthur is very gentle with Gwen, and Gwen learns to come out of her shell around Arthur, and is soon just as comfortable as Merlin around Arthur.
Morgana and Gwen is a relationship full of trust, Merlin and Gwen are two of the only people that Morgana truly trusts (the others being Arthur and Lance). There is a lot of pampering involved when it comes to Morgana, who only wants the best for her partners.
Lance and Other RO is a slow burn. Lance does not like Other to begin with, and doesn’t trust zir at all, especially not around Merlin. Other is demiromantic and while ze enjoys flirting, it takes zir a while to trust anyone enough to form a romantic bond. Once in a relationship though, it’s one of healing.
