Reading "Some Desperate Glory" by Emily Tesh on @cd-container 's recommendation, I am really not far in at all but vastly enjoying Kyr's POV. She is so fucking funny. And honestly depressing because she's so hyperfixated on the impending doom of her species and everyone around her that she has ever known and the planet she was too young to ever live on let alone save, honestly it reads to me like she has OCD catastrophizing + autism (taking everything literally, being extremely focused on rules and order, flat affect, blunt to the point of coming across as callous and tactless to others. struggling to understand other's emotional responses) but I'm not sure if that was the author's intention lol. I'd be surprised if it wasn't, honestly.

Kyr had nowhere, really, to go. Cadet barracks were for sleeping; no one wasted time in the arcade but weaklings and traitors-in-waiting. ~ "What were you doing in the arcade?" "rest and relaxation?" said Mags. "I find losing really badly at video games relaxing." "You lose?" "everyone loses at something, Vallie." Kyr, who didn't, gave him a narrow look. ~ The rest of Blackbird scattered and fled past the tall figures of Sparrow, who were coming in as the last shift bells died away. Lisabel--the only one of Kyr's messmates who would pity idiot juniors--gave the remaining one a sympathetic look. Kyr pretended not to see it, because she was very fond of Lisabel. ~ Lisabel's expression was sympathetic, which was only another way to say pity. Impossible to bear the thought of being pitied by Lisabel. Lisabel was lovely, she was sweet and softhearted, Kyr was glad they'd been cadets together even if it had dragged their mess' collective training scores down, but she could not be pitied by someone like her.

It's just, Kyr loves her messmates! They're her team, her family, she dedicates so much of her time and effort to trying to help them thrive on Gaea, and they fucking hate her! And she has no idea! It clobbers her in the face when she hears "I never liked you" said as if it were obvious. And it should be! Valkyr Marston is the worst! Her best idea of how to express love is to act like a god damn drill sergeant! She reduces Lisabel to tears repeatedly and thinks nothing of it! Hell, I've known people like Kyr, people who have twisted and contorted every part of themselves around a dogma, an institution, who filter every single one of their impulses through that lense, and they're always so god damn smug about it! Even ignoring the way it warps her good and kind impulses, she just radiates fragile, violent pride. How else could she function? How could she tolerate the harm she's done herself on behalf of Gaea except to treat it like a test that only she was strong enough and brave enough to pass, and to hold herself above everyone else who doesn't meet the invisible standards she judges herself by.

And fuck is it satisfying when she is finally able to see herself through her messmates' eyes. The sense of loss is palpable. But she makes the effort! She tries to do better by them! And we get to see that they were ready to love her, to embrace her, to be her friends. All she needed to do was act more like a person and less like a fascist ideal.

SPARK - What is the best thing you created in this world? How important is it in relation to the story?

MARIGOLD - I think it depends where you are, as the main 3 countries are a little different. In Ostrein, Emil and Maud are pretty popular, and they don't really do middle names. Most common surname is Bauer.

For Louksna, Lisabelle or anything ending in 'belle' is pretty popular. Louksnan last names can get kind of long sometimes, but most often you'll see Chasteau and Beaumont. Middle names are either the birthflower or birthstone of the month the baby was born on, so that is varied.

In Reyoarfell, names of ancestors are used to honor them. Torsten and Gunhild have been popular for ages. Last names are usually the clan the person was born/married into, so the biggest clan is probably Hawk's-Shrill, who are known to be proud warriors.

SPARK - This one is hard because there's a lot of things I like. I'd say Karliah's fucked up ancestry. It's definitely not in a 'i'm the chosen one' way, but a 'My entire lineage is cursed and so am I' way. Her entire maternal line has lived and died on a farm in the middle of the forest, and it's a mystery how Karliah didn't repeat the ancient cycle. Her father, well, most of it is a spoiler, but let's just say he's the most hated man alive in Reyoarfell 😅

Her lineage is very important in the series, as it sets up some of the problems and conflicts she faces throughout her journey. From resisting whatever is tying her to the farm, to proving that she is not her father's daughter, she has to face these problems head on and pray she doesn't go mad from the pressure <333

Oooohh I have so many fave characters, I truly feel like nobody else shares them though lmao. But here is my pitch!

Claus Winklestein from Worst online date ever. He is so funny, in touch with his bisexuality and just a very flamboyant guy! And he has a heart of gold, because when his supple wife was in danger, he was ready to sacrifice himself for her. I wonder what him, her and Pocky get up to in the massage dungeon ;)

2. and 3. this has to be a shared spot because I don't know who made me laugh harder, it was mostly the combination of them and the sheer chaos, and Shayne totally losing it lmao. It's Tilda Swinton and Lisabelle Heinz from Shayne interviews more exes. I have rarely laughed so much at a video.

Radius Bellerose - Radea’s father and formerly Marquis Bellerose, now retired. He is an ambitious man but not to the point of endangering the kingdom. He loves his family and seeks only the best for them, even if it goes against their wishes. He was a bit of a jerk to Dan in the past but they got along well after Dan succeeded in becoming the Prime Minister. The death of his wife almost broke him but he pulled through for his daughters. Absolutely adores his grandchildren very; his favorite is Sophia and he loves spoiling her. A tall, imposing man with blond hair that's mostly gray and blue eyes. He has powerful wing magic.

Nicolette Bellerose - Radea’s mother and former Marchioness Bellerose; she is related to the Randall family. Currently deceased. She was very sweet and kind, a bit of a spitfire and not afraid to stand up for what she believed in. She loved her daughters and would have supported Radea's romance with Dan. She had always been a sickly woman and eventually died when her youngest daughter was five. She had a frail and delicate appearance with platinum blond hair and red eyes. She had wind magic but it was rather weak.

Marchioness Radella Bellerose - Radea’s sister, two years younger and the current Head of the Bellerose family. Her personality is a bit like Sophia's, shy and imaginative with a love for books. She was more timid when younger but gained confidence as she grew up. She admires her big sister and was supportive of her romance with Dan. She used to have a crush on Luigi Claes and wanted to be his wife; initially, she hated Millidiana for marrying him but eventually gained admiration and respect for the Duchess. Her husband died when she was pregnant with their son; his death was hard but she found the strength to continue on; her father helped her a lot and they grew closer as a result. She absolutely loves her son and gets along well with Radea's children, especially Sophia due to their similar personalities. She has a delicate appearance but fortunately, she is not sickly like her mother; her hair is platinum blond and she has blue eyes. She decently strong wind magic.

Raymond "Ray" Bellerose - Radea’s nephew and current heir of Bellerose; the same age as Nicol, only a few months older. He seems to have a charming and polite personality, but is secretly jealous of Nicol because the latter has better looks, more popularity, higher grades/Student Council position, etc. Despite his dislike for Nicol, he gets along well with Sophia as they both share a love for reading. He even loves romance novels as well, but he keeps it a secret since he finds it embarrassing. He is engaged to Lady Phoebe Lambert and they get along well even if the marriage is for convenience. His mother named him after his father. Almost as tall as his grandfather; very handsome with long platinum blond hair tied up and blue eyes. He has strong wind magic, though Nicol is more powerful.

Baron Eugéne Faucher - the father of Dame Elizabeth ‘Elise’ Faucher. He is a clever and observant man who loves his children and wishes for them to be happy. He supports Elise's decision to become a knight even if he worries about her. He has dark brown hair and brown eyes. He has decently powerful earth magic.

Baroness Lisabelle Faucher - Elise’s mother and Eugéne’s wife. She is kind though a bit mischievous, and absolutely loved her family. She fully supports Elise in becoming a knight, confident in her talent and skill. She had light blond hair and green eyes. Like her daughter, she has wind magic.

Lord Elijah "Eli" Faucher - Elise’s older brother by two years and heir of the Faucher Barony. He is kind and has a fun loving side, but takes his responsibilities as future Baron seriously. Totally supportive of his little sister even if he worries about her. He has light brown hair and brown eyes. Like his father, he possess earth magic.

Emelie Faucher - Elise’s younger sister; she is the same age as Nicol Ascart. Energetic and a little mischievous but also friendly and kind. Totally idolizes her big sister. Loves to lord over her twin brother that she's older (by five minutes!). Dark brown hair and green eyes. She has earth magic like her father.

Emilio Faucher - Elise’s younger brother and Amelie’s twin; he is the same age as Nicol Ascart. Energetic and very mischievous but friendly and kind. Totally idolizes her big sister. Inseparable from his twin even if he's annoyed that she lords her status as older (by five minutes!) over him. Dark brown hair and green eyes. He has earth magic like his father.

Count Hiram Grant - the father of Edward Grant. He is a talented sword duelist, a bit arrogant but respects those that have talent and skill. An ally of Jacques Alarie but doesn't like him. Good friends with Baron Loid Vallier. Slender but strong body, perfect for swift sword fighting; dark hair and green eyes. He has strong water magic.

Baron Louis Vallier - the father of Richard Vallier and a very intelligent and clever man with an interested in entomology (the study of insects). An ally of Jacques Alarie but doesn't like him. Good friends with Count Hiram Grant. He is very tall and skinny, short, sandy blond hair and pale green eyes behind glasses. He has strong wind magic.

Sir Alawar Ackerman - the father of Sir Oliver Ackerman and a Knight Commander serving the Royal Family. He is a very serious man who usually doesn't tolerate nonsense from his subordinates but is very reasonable and cares about those under his command. A good friend of Sir Patrick Malone, Commander of the Claes Knight. He looks a lot like his son, Oliver, with the same dark hair and dark blue eyes. He is one of the best knights in the kingdom.

Bonnie Calico - she is the head chef of the Adeth Family. She is very friendly, kind and often motherly; has an adventurous, fierce side and does not hesitate to defend those precious to her. She used to be a pirate but retired from that life after the lost of her crew during a storm. She was saved by Duke Kai Adeth and swore fealty to him and his family. She used to be known as the Tiger of the Sea due to her fierceness in battle. She is very tall and muscular while still looking feminine; she has long red hair streaked with gray and heterochromia, one right eye green and left eye yellow. She has a pet green parrot named Pepper who can talk and seems smarter than the average bird.

Sir Armand Aragon - Commander of the Adeth Knights and Elias Aragon's younger brother. Like his brother, he is strict with his subordinates but knows when to be kind and cares a lot about those serving under him. He gets along well with his older brother and likes to tease him as all younger siblings do. He is considered the most skilled knight in the Adeth Duchy and an amazing sword fighting, the only one capable of matching his sword skills was the former Duke Kai Adeth. He is an old friend of Sir Patrick Malone and Sir Alawar Ackerman.

Grizzella Terni - eldest sister of Queen Giulia and Viscount Giovanni Terni. She is very vain and stuck-up, always looking down in those she deems inferior. She is jealous that her youngest sister became the Queen, feeling that the position should have been hers and developing an inferiority complex over it. She is married to a baron and had at least three children with him. Unlike her youngest siblings, she does not have magic. Looks very similar to Queen Giulia with blonde hair and blue-green eyes, but her face is meaner.

I finished "Some Desperate Glory" by Emily Tesh and god it's like rearranged me emotionally... It's been a while since a book hit so many things I am absolutely obsessed with in just the right way.

CW for non-descript discussion of incest

There is a lot I could say, but I think first and foremost, it's been a very long time since I read a fiction novel about incest that hit as hard as this one does, that really goes into how exactly it is so emotionally and mentally traumatizing, how the grooming process can be so incredibly understated and so life-destroying to realize, how that still doesn't erase the conflicted feelings. There was just a lot being covered by this I wasn't expecting, and usually wouldn't expect in genre fiction tbh.

But that's what this novel is. A long meditation about child abuse and grooming and the slow horror of realization, and the pain of acceptance. And also fascist indoctrination and how that plays into it all!!!!

My only other thought I can put into comprehensible sentences: Kyr/Cleo would have been a WAY more fulfilling romance than Kyr/Lisabel, I'm not even sorry, Lisabel just did not have half the screen-time, character growth or interesting dynamic. Give me the enemiesto lovers.

YES Pulls a smug Azul Face. BRO IM VERY VERY PICKY. But I tried being open-minded here. But I could have added more here but like I think it would be too long!

"Daisy(Lisabel)" I kind of have favoritism on this manwha because of the plot line, and the refreshing couple. The couple talk out their issues easily, their open with one another and overall see each other as equals. That's very rare in manwha. This manwha is a refreshing change compared to other manwha's.

"Marry me, again my husband" please I recently started this and I love it so much! The main couple are amazing and the brother... I want... Gimme.. Regardless the plot is enticing and really hope the best for the main couple. Especially after you read the first few chapters..

"The Black Haired Princess" I love this manwha so much, easily in my top manwha's. It's my comfort manwha! The duo is funny but not only that wholesome. They both seem to have no interest in love yet its cute how they develop into a romance.

"Grand Duke, It Was a Mistake!" My dream relationship with Vil Ok all jokes aside. In manwha's we usually see a obsessively or drunk-in-love ml or fl. But having both so in love is rare, and I don't think I've seen it! Except this one! Usually one person loves the other possessively so it's cute and refreshing to see both main characters love each other that much!

"Abandoned wife has a new husband." It's amazing, the ml helps the fl a lot, overcoming her trauma. He helped her out of a very difficult situation. And It's honestly sweet seeing their relationship build slowly but surely.

SPECIAL MENTIONS

"I Became the Wife of the Monstrous Crown Prince" Personally I read the novel a bit and I love it! I haven't focused on the manwha as much but if it's following the novel, which from what I've seen it is! It'll be good! I haven't finished the novel but the couple is cute, honestly just some wholesome, bit angst? Very mild but tooth-rotting couple fluff. (From childhood!)

"Miss Not-So Sidekick" Ok so this manwha is a comedy, but it's so much fun! The main couple is hilarious, their dynamic was worth reading. If you're into comedy and romance this manwha is for you!

"Who made me a princess" Personally I don't enjoy this as much as some other manwha's. But I know a good chunk of the community love this manwha, in fact it was the first thing I wrote a fic about! So you should check it out!

"The Villainess Reverses the Hourglass" One of the first things I read, (I think?!) And like I can't decide if it should go on special mentions or on top. But I recommend it! Hell I even read the novel for it, just to speed up and know the plot. (Not the epilogue I think? I got bored heh-heh)
