Why Ariel gave up her voice
Ariel never gave up a voice for a man she has just met and hadn't talked to.
Ariel gave up her voice because she didn't value it. And she didn't value it because people around her didn't value it. They praised it when she used it for show, for singing for an audience that wanted to hear the sound but never listened to her words.
She felt unheard her entire life, misunderstood, alone, isolated. Sure, she has friends, like Flounder, Sebastian and more in the animated series, like Gabriella, her sisters, Urkin, etc. They all loved her but didn't understand her. Looked at her funny when she opened up about her love for the human world. Was even berated by some, like Sebastian and her father. She never felt heard. So, yeah, for everyone else, even the audience, is like: this girl is so stupid, she gave up her beautiful voice for legs.
Because with legs, she can stand, as she always wanted. And she never needed her voice to make Eric fall for her, or the castle's staff, with her personality, always overshadowed by her voice, she won everyone's hearts. With her blubby, spontaneous, happy, curious personality, she made the prince fall for her, made him forget that 'beautiful voice' he fell for (until Ursula put a spell on him, that is). Ariel felt heard for the first time, without a voice.
She didn't give up her voice for a man, but because she was so tired of not being heard, that she never saw the value of her voice, because nobody showed it to her beyond shallow reasons. She learnt, along with everyone else, how important her voice AND words are.
That's why I always felt related to her. I was always heard when it was convenient, if I expressed an opinion the adults around didn't like, I was shut down, belittled and patronized.
Your voice MATTER, will always MATTER. It doesn't matter how way you communicate. Look at Gabriella, in the animated series, she was mute but she still communicated and was heard by her octopus friend.
Please, NEVER let anyone make you believe your WORDS hold no value. Not even yourself.

My favourite line from the new The Little Mermaid movie:
"You shouldn't have had to give up your voice to be heard."

I absolutely love that the live action Little Mermaid shows to exactly what degree Eric is the same kind of nerd that Ariel is. It’s fucking delightful.

[.] okay so let's say you and Eric have kids around two years after you got married and this man he'd be the best father known to man
[.] during the pregnancy he'd be making sure that you are okay, and comfortable, especially with your growing stomach. whenever the two of you are in private laying in bed. his hand would be on your stomach and he'd be whispering to the child
[.] also since the two of you were currently at sea you got motion sick and morning sickness ontop of each other. so most of the time you were hunched over the side of the ship.. hopefully, no mermaids were swimming by underneath
[.] the cravings and mood swings were no joke.. too poor eric didn't do anything honestly he was trying not to hold back a laugh.. which just angered you even more until he comforted you as you made a pouty face.
[.] once the baby started kicking.. eric started getting all giddy and excited for his child to arrive soon. but the dread of also giving birth while at sea was creeping up on him too.
[.] knowing how far from home the two of you were, he decided to make port at a nearby island to make sure you and the baby were safe
[.]once the baby arrived though eric was all over his newborn son, immediately scooping him up into his arms and cooed over the infant.. who looked exactly liked you minus the eye color for which he shared with his father
[.] watching Eric cradle his child made your heart swell with joy, knowing how great of a father he'd be..
[.] eric would be the kind of father to tell stores of his adventures to his child before bed.. leading the child to definitely take after his father wanting to join him on adventures when he's older.
bonus..
[.] eric is struggling to but the child to asleep, since you just gave birth.. ariel to the rescue using her siren song to soothe the child asleep..

Little Mermaid live action spoilers :)
So this is not deep at all, but I love how they gave Ariel and Eric the common trait of collecting stuff? From the moment she goes in his library/study, the shape of the room is making you think of her grotto. Then he comes in and is telling her about all the human stuff he’s collected from all over the world and she is enthralled. And then he’s like oh I’ve got this cool stuff from under the ocean too!!!! Can you imagine how beautiful it is there??? And Ariel is given this wonderful moment of realizing her world is just as magical to Eric as his is to her. It’s a nice change from her father shutting her down all the time, even though Triton obviously is doing so as regards the human world in favor of the ocean, but I feel the point still stands. The human world is what sets Ariel apart from her dad and he wants nothing to do with it. The sea is what sets Ariel apart from Eric and he is fascinated with it. And they can bond over learning more about the rest of the human world together!
I just have a lot of feelings about how Triton forces Ariel to feel for most of her life and how she is able to connect with others, Eric especially, on land about the things she loves.

Very much a classic Dreamworks move to release a thing where a Disney parody is one of its main focal points very closely to the Disney thing they're making fun of
