10. Top three favourite fic tropes

Fake relationship — I love these fics because they’re always filled to the brim with dumbness and pining, and the classic “we’re having sex frequently….. but obviously my feelings are one-sided” which is the ultimate dynamic. Particularly between Merlin and Arthur, given they actually are that stupid. Lmfao

Gay-for-you friends-with-benefits to gay awakening revelation pipeline — This is very specific, but it’s probably my number one favourite trope for modern AUs (which is why And None But Fools is the ultimate modern merthur fic). I just absolutely love fics where Arthur thinks he’s into women, because it’s what’s been expected of him, and then he somehow ends up in a FWB situation with Merlin, rationalises it by going ‘well maybe I’m just bisexual for Merlin’ and then eventually realises that actually the reason no previous relationships have ever worked or been fulfilling is because he is in fact a raging, painfully closeted homosexual. It’s just so Arthur; of course he’s repressed and closeted, he grew up with Uther’s expectations.

There was only one bed — This is just a classic. No explanation needed. One of my favourite scenes in The Book of Merthur is in the first book when they share a sleeping pallet (for reasons™️). Peak homoerotic tension.

22. What is it about watching the same two idiots falling in love over and over again?

I think, in general — if we look at the concept of fandom and fan creations as a whole — that what we love about it is the familiar mixed with the novel. I’ve had similar conversations with other friends, about how fanfiction is a remix. Why do we love remixes? Because they take a song we know and make it into something new and often even more fun, or fun in a new way. Also, fanfiction is really just a return to our storytelling roots. ALL stories were made to be shared, to be passed from storyteller to storyteller, and to evolve with each sharing. This is so fucking human of us. We are sitting around a fire, telling each other the same stories we’ve told for thousands of years, about love.

If we’re talking about Merlin and Arthur though… there’s something about them specifically that I think is more compelling than most ships. It’s why the brain rot won’t die. They have such a three dimensional relationship. We were given five whole seasons of them going from the snarky chemistry of ‘you’re such a prat’ ‘you can’t talk to me like that’ ‘you want to fuck me so bad it makes you look stupid’ in EPISODE ONE to ‘I’m willing to die for you’ in EPISODE FOUR to ‘you’re my only friend and I couldn’t bear to lose you’ (I AM GNAWING MY OWN SKIN OFF) to ‘just… just… just… hold me. please’ (I AM FLINGING MYSELF INTO THE MOLTEN CENTRE OF THE EARTH). Their story is a love story. It’s a story of two best friends, two men shackled by destiny, two men who choose each other above destiny every time — and also put each other first before anything else that matters to them (Merlin choosing Arthur’s safety over magic’s return to Camelot; Arthur choosing to risk his life for Merlin instead of staying alive for the kingdom). It’s a tragedy. But their relationship is also full of humour, and genuine enjoyment, and playfulness. Arthur is, with Merlin, just Arthur the man; in all other relationships he is Prince or King first. He puts on some sort of act, performs some sort of role — but with Merlin he lets his guard down, warts and all. Anyway I’m getting emotional about Arthur Pendragon again, as per usual.

Basically, their dynamic and their story are so rich with potential that we’ll never stop telling their story, in thousands of new and also familiar ways. When I write scenes between them, it’s like I’m just acting as a conduit while they have whatever conversation they want to have; I have no control, because their characters are so solid and human and real that there’s no way I can a) force them to say anything or b) force them to shut up. Lmao. It’s like that post I saw recently, which said something about how writing fic is just watching two idiots be stupid and writing up an incident report about it. They are like that. And they’ll never stop bickering or pulling each other’s pigtails.
