Song Review: The Avett Brothers feat. Bob Weir - “I Shall be Released” (Live, Aug. 27, 2017)

The contrast between the vocal stylings of Tania Elizabeth and Bob Weir is startling on “I Shall be Released.”

The Avett Brothers’ touring fiddler and the former Grateful Dead guitarist swapped verses on Bob Dylan’ 1967 track about wrongful imprisonment when Weir joined the Avetts to close out the 2017 edition of the Lockn’ festival. It’s a stunning musical version - an ideal festival closer - with cello and organ solos and Elizabeth’s high, tuneful singing contrasting with Weir’s (who wisely gets only one verse) atonal, but impassioned, vocalizations.

This is obviously one of those you-had-to-be-there moments and Sound Bites sadly was not there. But the just-released pro-shot video of the performance does a pretty good job of conveying what it must have been like to see and hear a founding member of the scene playing and singing this number alongside one Americana’s premier contemporary bands. And while neither Elizabeth nor (especially) Weir can sing it like Richard Manuel did, this version of “I Shall be Released” should have - and now has - been released.
