I’ve been thinking about Mother 3 a bit and I want to share some things that I think are really cool.
First thing’s first:
I Love Ionia so much
Well I love all the Magi honestly, but Ionia is like my favorite non party member character. She’s so interesting to me with how serious she is about the dark dragon’s awakening compared to the other Magi. The Magi seem very nonchalant about the fate of the islands except for her. I think this ties into how she has more relationships with the people living there. She’s a good friend to Alec while the other Magi don’t know him and I suspect she was the main person to raise Kumatora. Its stated that the Magi were given Kumatora but I don’t think a lot of them did much with her. By how Kumatora acts with Doria when she falls at her house, it seems to me they aren’t particularly close. But Kumatora is close to Ionia. The scene at Chupichupyoi temple is one of my favorites because of this. Ionia knows and understands Kumatora probably the most out of any npc we encounter. And the way Kumatora reacts to Ionia’s disappearance fucking KILLS ME. The game doesn’t let you hang onto that moment much, but it’s always stuck out to me. Previously Kumatora hasn’t really shown much sadness, only points of anger and frustration when things upset her. So to see her genuinely sad about something tells me just how close she was to Ionia.
Random Discussion Point 2: I think it’s really neat how Psi awakenings act like a subconscious defense system. I’ll keep this one brief. Every time someone awakens to new Psi it’s because of a dangerous situation, usually massive strikes of lightening or Psi being directed at them or even the fevers they get. I like the extra context behind the nature of Psi.
And lastly, some stuff about Locria. It’s really hard to feel any empathy for Locria after we’ve known them as Fassad. However, when you think about how Porky basically corrupted them first it gets kinda sad. The mouse in Locria’s house says that they used to dote over them excessively. I think it’s important to note that the detail of goodness we get about Locria is one to do with animals. We all know that what they did to Salsa was messed up. Porky made everything on the Nowhere Islands do a complete 180 and it’s fitting that he started by making one of it’s native inhabitants who is spiritually connected to the islands his first target. I can’t imagine what he did or said to make Locria change so horrifically.
*I saw an interpretation in the reblogs that Locria was always like that and they were just given an outlet to be the worst they could be. I like this idea as well, since it still gives impact to the plot while showing that some people just aren’t redeemable or have a good reason for doing bad. I wanted to share my thoughts with the person who added that but it was a tag so I added it in editing if that’s okay.
Anyways that’s all, just had to get these thoughts out of my system

Ask Magikin Lucas (and Locria) (and me).
After Hinawa goes missing, Lucas' father Flint goes slightly mentally unwell from depression and loss and gets obsessed with finding his presumably lost wife. At the same time Locria came to twins' life, surprisngly volunteering to take care of Lucas and raise him as his own child. The answer to that unusual act of kindness lays in the new-found psychic powers that the boy has.

I've been slowly working my way through MOTHER 3 for the first time in about a decade, specifically with the intent of studying it for my own project, and it's definitely a different experience in my 30s?
Different parts hit different and I see a lot more nuances that I didn't pick up on when I was younger?
Also- Porky is SIGNIFICANTLY creepier to me as an antagonist now that I've actually matured a bit myself? And I don't mean that in a bad way at all, but he's characterized with a very fascinating blend of adult and childish traits that makes him... really unsettling ngl-

So I assume most fans who've gone down the MOTHER rabbithole have read the M3 interview thing (lots of cool and fun stuff if you haven't read it before!!)
Fassad gets brought up a couple times, but not toooo much
But as you can guess, I'm totally obsessed with what there is about him
So first off to set the tone, here's a song that apparently inspired part of his character :3
So this song is about (at least as far as I understand, only the first two lines are translated and I don't know Japanese XP) a woman whose cruel, I assume abusive lover has been sent to jail, and how she can only see him as kind and good
I could no longer see you, and for the first time, I knew love deeper than the ocean. Everyone says he's bad, but to me he was always a good person
These lines are what Itoi specifically says he had in mind when he came up with Fassad and the mouse and I just think that's a really interesting tone to imagine his character with Like how well did Fassad really treat the mouse? Like, the way I'm reading the song (the two lines of it that i know) is that she's remembering her lover as better than he really was - she can't see him anymore, and now she loves him better than she ever did before I think it's pretty easy to imagine that Fassad kept some of his crueler tendencies with the mouse (not nearly to the point of his treatment of, say, Salsa, but), but she remembers him for the nicer things he did for her (the mouse isn't gendered in the game or the interview but with the context of the song it just feels right to me, yknow?)
Gotta bring up Fassad and Salsa, too I've heard someone else bring this up and Itoi actually talks about it in the interview, but like The way you, the player, get to perceive Fassad through Salsa is really interesting Right off the bat, you probably hate him He's cruel and tortures a pair of monkeys for his own amusement But Salsa is too weak to really stand a chance against the enemies you face on his own To survive, you basically HAVE to rely on Fassad choosing to step in and help you So you have this abusive, awful guy that hurts you whenever you're around him, but you're also completely dependent on him Which is a really interestingly complicated relationship to have with him
Okay here's the big thing from the interview that informs so much of my view of Fassad's character
Fassad doesn't really understand the pain of others, you know?
That's it That single line is just So interesting to me It's not that he doesn't care He doesn't even UNDERSTAND There's no purposeful suppression of any feelings of empathy or compassion. He straight up lacks it in its entirety. To me, Fassad's worldview revolves entirely around its relation to himself. He sees everything through a very simple lens: "This will help me" "This will not help me" The first group he will throttle as much use he possibly can until it falls into the second group, which is useless and something that can be thrown away or ignored. He likes bananas. He will eat a banana to satisfy his craving for one. After that, he just tosses the peel on the ground and thinks no more about it. Whether something is helping him willingly, through being compelled, or being forced to against their will is something Fassad lends no thought whatsoever to. The Pigmasks do what they're told when he screams at them. Salsa does what Fassad says because rebelling brings physical pain. Claus has had his control over his own autonomy completely removed. The fact that all these people hate him is something that Fassad never bothered to consider.
And this egocentric selfishness is what leads to his downfall. I talked about how I like to think that Fassad's "death" in the fall of the Thunder Tower was Claus's doing in another post. The idea that his torture of Claus could bring potential consequences is something that Fassad never realized. After his reconstruction and repeated failures, he ends up tossed away, alone and pathetic, because he's lost his status and everyone that was previously obedient has no need to listen to him anymore.
On the other hand, you have someone Fassad was obsessed with: his best friend, the only person who gave him the praise and power he desired, King Porky Minch himself. Porky was absolutely terrible for Fassad. Enabling all his worst traits, pulling him further down the path to evil. I think Fassad and Porky are very similar in a lot of ways. In the interview, Itoi talks about how there's a distinction between good and evil, justice and injustice, heaven and hell, etc. People fall around the middle, where there's fun and games that aren't super orderly in the good sense, but nobody gets hurt. But the line's very blurry, and Itoi talks about how it was hard to know what exactly was too far over the line as a kid. (sidenote, it's really really interesting how often Itoi connects himself with Porky)
When I was young, there were a lot of times when I would be scolded for doing things that I'd done just for fun, because the teacher had seen it as naughty. And I thought, "Huh? The line is drawn…there?"
I think this is important for understanding both Porky and Fassad (and hoo boy am i gonna talk about it a LOT whenever i talk about Porky). Porky was in a terrible environment to learn about right and wrong. His parents were terrible examples, and anything he did that seemed totally harmless would be "bad" that he'd have to be punished for. His perspective would be totally skewed, and he wouldn't learn about how what really matters is how his actions affect others. If he lived a normal, un-Giygas-influenced life, and without Ness to be there for him and ground him with an alternate perspective, I think Fassad is what he'd grow up into. Resentful, selfish, unable to understand the pain of others. However. Fassad doesn't meet Porky when he's comparable to himself, he meets Porky at the end of a ?????-year long spiral into absolute, inhuman evil. Porky acts like a mentor and a seemingly benevolent friend, but really... it's just Fassad with a banana. Once Porky's squeezed all the use he can out of him, Fassad learns what it's like to be discarded.
So Fassad really ends up in a miserable place. He hates himself, realizing finally that he's driven away everyone. He's alone, pathetic, broken, left to die in the sewers. It's a very harsh lesson, even if he probably deserved it. I do feel kinda bad for him.
But to end off with, there's one more relationship he had that I need to talk about.
The Magi
His "sisters" you could say.
The game doesn't give us much on their relationship with Locria, but goddd it's so interesting to speculate about. They're the people he would've been closest to, and we KNOW they cared about him, since they mention him repeatedly and are concerned about what might've happened to him (it's so sad to me that they all disappear without ever finding out). I think it was complicated. I've talked about how I see Fassad as someone who resented his place in the world, and I think his selfishness plays into that. He wanted the respect and attention of everyone and everything around him, and their love didn't live up to that. He felt isolated and uncared for, so he dropped them and went to live on his own with his mouse.
But I'm sure he also missed them at the end. They're the only people - aside from the mouse, who I'm sure he also misses - who never hated him. Even though he hasn't thought about them for the last few years, I think he'd know that they never stopped caring about him. He'd finally realize what he had, and that he'd just thrown it all away in his greed and selfishness.
Hm...
You know what'd fit really well for this, actually?
I could no longer see you, and for the first time, I knew love deeper than the ocean.

Claus takes Lucas's role, while Porky and Locria take Duster and Kumatora's. This doesn't mean the swaps always go both ways, though.
Stay tuned to learn about Lucas, Duster and Kumatora!

fassad frustrates me because i feel like he was almost an amazing character, a fantastic addition that would've added even more depth and nuance to a story that's already so rich. and then they just dropped the ball by not elaborating on his identity or motivation, like?? at all?? whatsoever?? on one hand i love him just being an unrepentantly hammy Bad For Badness' Sake kind of villain. but as the player, when chapter 8 rolls around, you are no longer at liberty to read him that way. 'cause he is very much a defected dragon guardian. a figure with all implications of a complicated history, who's supposed to stir conflicted sentiments. but since the game offers no hints, not even breadcrumbs, as to the how or why of it, i'm left feelin' instead like i'm missing some huge piece.
not even askin' for a full exposition dump about locria's heel turn, or flashbacks, or anything that'd eat up a lot of screentime. just literally any dialogue or details that might paint a picture in the player's mind. when did locria become fassad? how do the other magifolk (and kumatora) feel about their absence? why might they have aligned with porky of all people? could the game have called the slightest bit of attention to anything the two of 'em have in common - immortal, bored, harboring a general disdain for human life? does fassad, the most selfish of his kin, care that his actions will lead to his own demise when his needle is pulled? does he have plans to double-cross porky at the last minute? or does he have some nihilistic deathwish, for both himself and the world at large? like. take maybe two or three of these questions. give 'em even just one line of text a piece - it can even be vague as hell! do that, and mother 3 would've been cookin' somethin' with this character. as it is, locria is simply fassad for reasons we will never fathom. which may as well be no reason at all.
there is some cut dialogue involving locria, iirc from a version of the story where the player actually does encounter them as locria. while in most cases i think mother 3 works fine without its cut content (dare i say better - trim the fat, n' all that), i am awfully curious about whatever was goin' on there. makes me wonder if fassad used to be more fleshed out, only to end up a casualty of the game's rushed development. like with the version of locria we got, i suppose we'll never know…

was thinking about mother 3 and for but a brief moment got sent to the hell world where it got localized but it also got found by 15 year olds on twitter. can you imagine the bad faith discourse that would be happening.
someone would argue dusters limp is mocking disabled people. people would say theres transphobic caricatures and especially hate locria because hes a villain and because shes a villain that means all gnc people are evil of course. at least 5 people would start a trend that because a kid dies its a morally corrupt game and if you like it youre saying you want kids to die. people would think hinawa is a bad mother for letting her children play outside. very few of these people would have played the game.
im not saying there arent issues. but i AM saying that people would focus on the wrong issues.

More pencil doodles :3 (i forgot to put the stripes on his pants in the second pic gdangit)
Lotsa stuff with this one so you can read all my thoughts below the cut ^^
So I think about Fassad Probably much more than most people like to
He's really interesting to me, as probably the MOTHER series's only villain who's completely and totally unsympathetic (heck, Shigesato Itoi even describes him as being unable to understand other creatures feeling pain!!!) And then of course you have the whole mystery of his backstory
Like when you first meet him, he just seems like a jerk, but a normal jerk Much later on, you realize that there's so much he's actually been hiding He's an incredibly powerful PSI user, he's King P's most trusted advisor, he knows all about Tazmily and the secrets of the Nowhere Islands, and of course, he's finally revealed to be Locria
So this is an alternate outfit I came up with for him at one point! very sharp and masculine in comparison to the rest of the Magi (that's the term i've been using for them instead of the actual one, because, you know... the slur >_<) I even made a sprite edit, so here's the design in color!
Tumblr media
I like to imagine Fassad being sort of a "master of disguise," and the outfit he wears in the actual game is just the facade (mwahaha) he's adopted for Tazmily: just a humble, benevolent peddler from far away, certainly not a sleazy, opportunistic scumbag with a sadistic streak
When he has the chance to kick back though, he prefers to dress more finely. One of his turn-waster moves ingame is actually him thinking about "Western-style clothing" which I think is really funny to interpret as him missing his fancy suits and ties XD
Oh and Fassad is never seen interacting with the Masked Man in the actual story, but I really really love thinking about him actually being a super involved figure in MM's creation and training. I have a fic I'm working on about that very idea, and boy does he really get to suck there. If you can't guess from the first doodle up there, he has MM fitted with a collar just like Salsa's.
What a horrible guy.
