The stones here speak to me, and I know their mute language. Also, they seem deeply to feel what I think. So a broken column of the old Roman times, an old tower of Lombardy, a weather-beaten Gothic piece of a pillar understands me well. But I am a ruin myself, wandering among ruins.

Across the rooftops from Città Alta, Belgarmo.

Surrounded by the 16th-century Venetian Walls, the medieval Città Alta is dominated by the Rocca di Bergamo fortress, where I took most of these pics from.

Handsome piazzas house the arcaded Palazzo della Ragione, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore with its gilded interior, and the intricate marble facade of the Cappella Colleoni, where the first pic is from.

Narrow alleys are lined with upscale indie boutiques and delis, as well as centuries-old cafes, trattorias, and wine bars, this old town was really a joy to explore.
