That time when Daniel took his belt off and spanked Hudson Ahn during their fight. It was so random that I had to laugh and I do a double take every single time. Moments like that make reading Lookism worth it for me.

I loved the One Night arc, looking back at chapter 1 to now the main characters have not only changed but have physically come far. We have depressed Zack who finally won a fight. A furious Vasco who decided to do the one thing he said he'd never do. Then finally we have a manic Daniel who has arguably lost his marbles and is having too much fun.

Also, we got to see DG! It's good to see him twice every 100 chapters.

A/N: I haven’t written in so long and this is the first thing I’ve ever written for Lookism, so I’m nervous lol. The reader in this is described to be a foreigner, but I don’t describe what she looks like, so I hope that’s okay. She’s based off of one of my Lookism OCs but I thought it’d be better to write it as a Reader instead. I also won’t be using (Y/N) or anything like that bc I think it takes away from the flow of the writing/dialogue. Also, I think this takes place a little after the God Dog arc where Johan’s on his own again.

It’s not really romantic in this, but I’m thinking of making this a sort of series of one shots with this Reader specifically. Please lmk if Johan is OOC, bc I’m not confident in writing him haha. Anyways, hope you enjoy! c:

The nights are still cold at this time of year in Seoul. Not that you can really feel it at this point from where you are, starting the process of cleaning up and closing the restaurant. After having been cooped up in the small kitchen in the back of the hole-in-the-wall building you work at, finally done cooking after several hours, the space is well and truly stuffy by now. You were even a bit sweaty, in contrast to the people you can see pass by the windows outside that are trying to stay bundled up against the wind chill.

“Alright,” your boss walks into the back to join you, “you’ve been holed up in here long enough, I’ll take care of this. You go deal with the front.”

As if it’s ingrained in his mind as instinct, he swats at your back with the hand towel he grabs before you can protest that you can do it yourself and he should rest. You laugh slightly at the older man, deciding that you’re too tired anyway to argue with him right now.

You leave behind what you were working on to go out into the front of house in order to count down the register and go about cleaning and packing up the floors and tables. You work silently, comforted by the sound of your boss cleaning in the back and the distant hum of life filtering in from behind the windows and locked door.

“Mr. Terrence,” you call as you walk toward the back doors, “I’ll take the trash out now.”

“Thanks, kid.” He replies as you grab the black bags in both hands.

It’s as you walk outside, hit by the cold and slightly regretting not grabbing your jacket first, that you see him. A slim, brown-haired boy sitting by the mouth of the alley between your workplace and the building next door. He’s curled up like he’s trying to hide, in a way, with his knees drawn up tight and facing slightly away from you. When you glance over at what he’s looking at, you see two small dogs not far from him.

You try not to stare as you pass by, but it is weird to you. There’s not usually anyone out here, especially at this time of night and in this weather – and if there is, they’re usually not here for any good reason. It’s not your business, you try to remind yourself, and you can’t afford to be getting caught up in anything bad that might be happening.

Although, that doesn’t seem right, either. This boy is just sitting alone on the ground, watching – presumably – his two dogs and still hasn’t even looked up at you. He doesn’t seem the type to be here for any salacious reason, which makes the only other conclusion that comes to your mind much more heartbreaking – he’s here because he has nowhere else to go. You could be wrong, but the way he was dressed (yes, he had a jacket, but not thick enough for this cold) and had only his dogs and a single backpack sat at his side just hit your instincts in a certain way. You couldn’t see his face, but he looked slim – probably not starving, but clearly not eating as much as you preferred for a young person to be eating. (Distantly, you think about how Mr. Terrence would make fun of you for thinking this despite the fact that you are also a “young person”.) His dogs also looked skinny, and even if you didn’t care about this boy, you couldn’t in good conscience let animals go without food.

With that thought, you made up your mind and quickly threw away the trash and made your way back into the restaurant to head straight toward the kitchen.

“Mr. Terrence,” your boss jumped as you burst back into the room again, “sorry. I was wondering if you finished packing everything up?”

“Nearly there,” the older man watched as you scuttled about the kitchen to grab a to go box from under the counter and start filling it with food. “Oh, no,” he scoffs lightly, “not another stray. If you keep feedin’ ‘em, they’ll keep comin’ back expectin’ more.”

“A stray and his strays, yeah.” You continue, ignoring his scoff because you know he could stop you if he was really that bothered by it.

“What?”

“Some guy and his dogs.”

“Ohhh~” you don’t need to look up to face him, because you can hear the smug smile in his voice, “a boy, huh~? No wonder you’re so eager.”

You resist the urge to fling some of the food at him, “shut up. You know it isn’t like that.”

He’s already stopped listening to you, having made up his mind about your intentions, “uh-huh, sure.”

You don’t bother to reply, finished with packing up the to go box now and not trying to play his games. You make your way back toward the doors, hoping the boy and his dogs hadn’t left already. He’s still there, thankfully, when you get outside – again regretting that you forgot to grab your jacket, but somehow remembered to grab the dog treats you keep in your bag for any stray you might come across – and still not looking up. You make your way over to the boy with your shoulders hiked up in a weak attempt to shield yourself against the wind, trying to walk around into his sight so that you don’t sneak up on him.

One of his dogs notices you first, a little thing with pink ears, and seems to watch your approach cautiously. The boy notices and whips his head around immediately, as if he was trying to catch you, and you pause for a moment at the way he looks at you like you might be a threat. He looks to be around your age, with a pretty face and puppy eyes, but he scowls at you in a way that makes him seem older – weathered and weary from past experience. Oof, you think as you try to figure out how best to approach him, a standoffish one, then.

“Hey,” you greet lightly, “sorry to bother you. I work at this restaurant and I was wondering if you wanted to take these leftovers off my hands so we don’t have to waste them by throwing them away.”

You don’t actually have to throw away the leftovers, of course, but you’re banking on him not knowing that because he seems like the type to not take handouts unless it’s phrased as if he’d be doing you a favor instead. Before the boy can answer, though, the dog with pink ears walks up to you first. You kneel down to its level, putting your hand out to let it sniff you before you try to pet it.

“Hi, puppy~!” You can’t help the high-pitched baby voice you use to talk to animals, it’s instinct at this point and you refuse to feel embarrassed about it.

The other white dog that’s wearing a sweater is still hanging back, looking like it’s shivering, but you can’t tell if that’s from the cold or if that’s just natural. You set the to go box down beside you, petting the pink-eared dog with one hand while you wrestle the dog treats out of your pocket with the other. The pup is fully excited now, tail wagging so hard that it’s almost throwing the dog off its feet, while you feed the treats to it, eagerly.

You realize that you pretty much forgot about the boy when his voice makes you jump, “her name is Miro.”

You look over, and he doesn’t seem to be scowling at you anymore, just watching you interact with his dog – still cautious, but not threatened.

“She’s cute,” you smile, “and your other dog?”

“He’s Eden.”

“Can I give him some treats?”

“He doesn’t like strangers much.”

“Well,” you shift slightly, waiting for permission to approach, “I’ll give them to you and you can give them to him, then.”

“Why?” He’s suspicious again - not in the same way that others here are when they see your face and know you’re an outsider - and you recognize it and it breaks your heart for him. (It seems a bit ridiculous for you to hurt for him, given that you don’t know him at all, but you do because you’ve seen it before and you know it at your core.)

“Because they deserve it. They all do.” You mean his dogs, specifically, but you also mean him and every other person like him.

He watches you for a moment more, and you let him, but he doesn’t respond verbally – just shrugs and makes the smallest movement of his head to nod. You grab the to go box again, dog treats in the other hand, and rise to move toward him. He rises too, probably more comfortable with being at eye level than sitting – just in case. Miro is following at your feet, and you stop with a bit of distance between yourself and the boy. You hand him the dog treats first, glancing at Eden shaking a bit behind him, and he stuffs them into the pocket of his jacket. You try to hand him the to go box and that’s when he becomes suspicious again – obvious when you look him in the eye.

“I know it might be an inconvenience, but it’d really help if you could take these. It just seems like such a waste if we have to toss them.” He doesn’t believe you, you know he doesn’t just by how he looks at you, but neither of you are going to say it aloud.

He stares at you for a moment again, seeming to battle in his mind over whether to take it or not, but the hunger that you’re sure he’s feeling seems to win out. He takes it from you and, despite how reluctant he was to accept it in the first place, he immediately holds it close to him and slightly away from you as if you’re going to snatch it back.

You want to say more, but you’re not sure what and you don’t really have any more reason to since you accomplished what you came out here for. You think to ask his name and give him yours, but you feel like you might be pushing him with that. So, with nothing else that you can come up with, you start to back away.

“Thanks,” you smile at him again and look down at Miro and Eden, “bye puppies~!”

You think anything else would bother him, so with one last glance at the boy – who seems to be waiting for you to leave before he goes on with whatever his plans are – you fully turn back to the restaurant and go inside. You wish you had gotten his name, or had some way of checking up on him and Eden and Miro again just to make sure they’d be okay, but you just have to accept that it’s left up to fate now.

Who knows, you might meet him again one day.

Hi~ I just wanna ask you, how do you think/feel about Eli & Heather's relationship and their 'history'? Like some people said that Heather took advantage of Eli's innocence, some people said that it was Eli's mistake.

Ok anon. I have my thoughts but I reread the arc just to try and articulate them better. Fucking forgot Darius Hong was in this. And no one needs more Darius Hong in their life. Anyway.

Eli Jang/Heather Relationship rambles

Damn. This is rough. Please note I may be the least well informed person to give my thoughts on this. Happy for anyone to disagree.

Sigh. I think a lot of times we think of things in black and white, whereas almost everything is in shades of grey.

Eli Jang & Heather's background

First off, Eli has experienced a lot of trauma when he was first introduced, and clearly going through a lot mentally. He's also stunted in a lot of ways and 'deprived of an education'. Literally everything that he has known was abuse. Ran away from home at the age of 10. And whatever fucked up shit was going on with Tom Lee too.

I cannot stress how clear all of this is.

With Heather, the only real thing we know about her is she's 15. Both parents lawyers and very overbearing.

Eli Jang's 'recovery' from trauma

But by chapter 237: Eli Jang (6) a month passes and they have both met. Eli, from how he is portrayed, has already improved a lot. Healed a lot. Not fully. I think we need to remember that the passing of time and progression differs massively in Lookism than in real life.

If this was real life, nope. Lookism, ehhhh. Literally please suspend your belief.

This is in part a big reason why I don't blame Heather for her actions that night.

The huge fucking question mark over consent

I can also never fully agree with anyone saying that Heather groomed Eli. To me, she acts very much like a 15 year old girl with a crush. Less nefarious than what grooming implies. Could she have been better informed and set boundaries? Hell yeah.

From what we can see in the panels, Eli reciprocates her feelings. Sure there might be other things going on, but if there were insidious intentions I feel like PTJ would show it more front and center.

To me, looking at the storyline and art, it just feels like 2 people with a crush.

At the same time, if we apply real life morals to this, then yeah it's all pretty messed up. This isn't real life though.

(Sex education is a whole other kettle of fish I don't want to get into. Where I'm from, we have free contraceptives, free medical care, sex education. But oops, teenage pregnancies still happen an awful lot.)

Here's where people might disagree because I'm giving consent to people on their behalf - though we're talking about fictional characters here and all we can do is speculate.

My opinions on this are:

If we ask Heather if she believed Eli consented that night, she would fully believe so.

Similarly at the time, Eli would probably say yes he did.

I have little reason shown by PTJ to doubt that he would withdraw his consent present day as well.

As for Eli's mistake?

Uhh. Assuming they are both able to consent, and let's just say yes for the sake of simplicity, then I don't see how the night together is his mistake?

The whole mess afterwards and the poor communication and martyr thing going on I would say is his mostly his fault. Yes, he has his reasons for it. Two things can still be true.

And fucking Olly Wang.

But Heather was right there. Eli could have cleared the air with her. Said wtf I didn't message you those but he didn't.

Heather lashed out, which I think is a very human response to her situation and the sudden insane amount of pressure placed on her shoulders, however unfair her words are. She didn't have the full story though, whereas Eli did.

So like I said, I place more of the ownership of this situation on Eli even though I can also see where it all stems from.

In Summary

This goes back to what I said before about there are so many shades of grey, and this situation and relationship is absolutely not black and white. To me, anyway.

We can also imply all we want with things happening off-screen during any of the arcs though it's better to stick with what we can see or clearly read between the lines.

Taking in my thoughts above, honestly? I just think it's a tragic story about 2 kids that had unprotected sex one night and then it fucking spiralled. I don't see the blame lying with either one for their actions. Based on my reasons above.

This situation feels too nuanced here for me to say yeah Heather fucked up or Eli fucked up because there are so many details at play here, mostly to do with Eli Jang's background but also to do with the pacing of time and recovery in PTJ-verse.

TL;DR: No-one sucks here. Too many nuances. Sad af situation.

Lookism Chapter 441 Memes/Thoughts I Have:

UMMMM… HELLO??? I stg, if he's referring to Goo... 😭 But oh man, if he were to replace Goo, I wonder how Gun is going to react. And I already heard ab the rumors going around, regarding to what PTJ mentioned before. Even the thing about someone's death, and whatnot. Yes, I know man. 💀 But in all honesty, this Charles Choi arc though... I like it so far. Minus... the death and Charles Choi himself because it's a catalyst for an event that'll happen in the future. Also, yes Charles, you piece of shit. Jichang won't ever think of joining you lol. Even if he agreed, what is there to benefit if he were to side with you? 😀

I don't think anyone has commented on what Charles Choi said about Jichang being a strategist, and he's right about that. Unlike many fighters, I noticed how Jichang is very meticulous when it comes to fighting. He assesses his opponents, like where to properly attack and he notes their weak points and people's most vulnerable spots to aim at, which makes his Battle I.Q. much bigger in comparison to the other First Generation Kings, who just fight with a passionate drive with fists during their fights. (Reminds me of current Daniel.) He's very clever too, and that's one of the reasons why I like Jichang's character.

I'm personally going to enjoy this one bc I really like horror/supernatural kind of genre and I'm going to be inspired by some of my fav manga characters and their abilities but I'll make other ideas for this character/oc? (which is just not really obvious on my media here lol). Genre: not really fluff and lemon ; slight angst (but there are some cute parts though) TRIGGER WARNING: mentions of g*re, bl**d, organs/limbs, mut*lat*on, mentions of social anxiety and depressive episodes, kidnapping, cannibalism, trust issues, toxic relationships at some parts, NOT FOR SENSITIVE AND YOUNG AUDIENCES Another thing, if you're having thoughts like these I suggest that you don't read this. It's okay if you like gore and the horror genre but don't take anything personally! And stay safe and healthy (keep your physical and mental health in check)

Is her powers cursed? Nobody knows. Though the only way to break it and to make her finally rest in peace is to learn how to love (cheesy Ik but let me explain later on). Not meaning to be edgy, but she hears voices in her head and she hallucinates of a beautiful (almost perfect) looking girl saying nasty things for her to do. Good thing she can control it at times.

Gun Park/Goo Kim/James Lee (DG)/ Yoojin (Eugene)/Olly Wang/Jiho Park (villain arc)/ Cheon Taejin/ Charles Choi (Elite)/ Tom Lee/ Baek Hangyul/Jinyoung Park

Oh boi, they seem to be chill and unbothered about your abilities but you know deep down that they're probably planning something about you. You're going to be a great weapon machine. Yoojin, Goo, and Baek might even acknowledge this as a great feat. But you know that behind that smile there's a foul intention hiding.

(Not promoting this behavior!): You seem to have trouble with trusting your peers making socializing hard for you. It may seem to be an easy task for most people but it can be a challenge for you. You may be good with your preferred hobbies but you know deep down that doing simple tasks in your daily life can be troubling. Good thing that he has your back for most times to protect you from harm, even if you're immortal.

This might sound toxic but I think most guys in this list/category will probably use you for their own advantage. Whether it's for strategic planning or in a physical fight he will be willing to train you because he believes that you got so much crazy potential. It's no big deal (no pun intended) for him if you got your arm or leg broken if you even got regenerative abilities (Jinyoung might kidnap and drug you out of "pure" curiosity of what the hell is your body capable of). It's also another interesting thing if you can make your own weapons. At least you can defend yourself from opponent's attacks even when you're losing. But he thinks that your abilities is not enough. You need to train, you need to get stronger since he saw that flaw on you that you depend on weaponry. Expect him to either whoop your ass for a beating everyday or do scientific experiments on you to know if you got more abilities that you are hiding from him and he wants to know your limits. Your endurance, durability, speed, IQ and defense are one of your greatest feats. But you often struggle to take the offense and with your strength, stamina and you need more battle knowledge plus experience. He wants to make you his greatest weapon.

It may be easy for them to just beat you in one punch or kick, but he knows that he may be fighting death. It doesn't mean that he's better at hand and hand combat is that you're not going to bring your guard down. You got your weapons and the only way to evade your attacks is if he is fast enough or if he has insane durability. Despite appearing as a normal being at times, you get easily agitated and stressed. This may trigger your powers and even a single scratch or drop of blood can produce another clone of you own even if it's a really slow process. And you getting pissed off is dangerous, it can cause chaos on your surroundings and you might even unintentionally harm the ones you consider your family. He might consider training your attitude though.

He might even make theories or hypothesis about your abilities. Is it a curse or is it really on your genes? But so far he knows that based on what you said, you never really find or felt love even from your close "friends" or family. He asked why you felt this way but you just don't really know the answer. If you actually get to know each other and have a deep connection he might actually like you, though at times it's just not obvious. He might not be the most affectionate but he promises that he'll try to be more gentle with his approach. You don't know if you could trust that though.

Sinu Han/Kuroda Ryuhei/Vin Jin/Gongseob Ji/Doo Lee/Jake Kim (Goo Kim ; a bit he's more chill than the others above)

Another one who's not really disturbed by your abilities or yourself. But he's not going to use you either. He's fine with you being a succubus or a demon as long as you won't hurt anybody intentionally. Though he can't help but to be amazed by it. "Wow! You can really do that? Can you show me a trick of yours or something?" "Do I really look like a dog to you?" He's just going to let you be. You are you and he wants you to live your best life.

GORE WARNING: He's not really demanding you to help him to deal off his enemies but he'll still appreciate your help nonetheless. But he'll still get really worried about you since he deeply cares tbh. He knows that you're not really a pro with hand to hand combat. But your creation ability and regenerative powers is a great advantage. But he doesn't want you to get hurt. Trust me he'll be in a state of shock when you started crying when you broke your arm or when it got cut off. Your limbs may have the ability to grow back, but you can still feel the pain and it may take a while for it to grow another clone of yours. So it's best if you don't make him worried, he can handle this business on his own.

He lowkey gets scared when you have an episode (like for example when Tomie grows another clone of hers when being triggered or mutilated). He wants to help you out as possible to just stop the drama but he doesn't know how to approach you when these events happen. He will try his best to comfort you though after.

He always feels bad that you experience getting mutilated over and over again. As you explained to him, the more you get revived, you slowly lose your humanity and sense of empathy. You often tried your best to mingle with other people but you end up being awkward and coming out as loud and strong to them making most avoid you. This frustrates you a lot as you want to live peacefully but your powers won't just let you be. He will try his best though in including you to social events and daily activities like partying and spending time with his friends and acquaintances so he hopes that you'll enjoy and appreciate his efforts! And if you're in a romantic relationship with him, he'll make you feel that you are worth it and he'll make you feel loved. Who knows the devil inside you might calm down for a while as you enjoy your moments with him.

He was a bit concerned with your abilities, almost not believing you at first if you asked me. Daniel might understand you more than the other guys in this list because of his ability to pass his consciousness with his two bodies at will. For sure you know that he was a bit scared about what you are capable of. Though he tries to be respectful with your feelings as possible since he doesn't want you to feel left out or feel misunderstood. Vasco, Jerry, Lineman, and Zack may ask questions again while you can hear his voice getting shaky mixing with his curiosity. (Cannibalism warning!) "Yo-You're a demon? Do you eat humans?" "I can if I want to make myself more powerful. But in exchange of that, I will completely loose my control over myself. So not necessarily because I don't want to. My diet is composed of what humans eat so you don't have to be scared, though it's understandable if you want to distance yourself from me." "NO NO IT'S OKAY I PROMISE!" "SH! BE QUIET!"

With the other more mature guys in this list, he may ask why you have the ability to make yourself to be stronger with you eating others. "It depends on the person. If I consumed a beautiful teenager around my age, I might be able to resemble like her or get some of her striking attributes like her prettiness. Or if I ate a powerful opponent, my hand to hand combat or creation will get more stronger and deadlier. It can probably enhance my regenerative powers but I wouldn't risk it. It can feed her up at have complete control over my body." "Who's her?" he asked as you pointed something behind his back with the coldest eyes. "Behind you." (ANOTHER THING! If someone is completely concerned or is actually really emotionally close with you they might see what you're seeing. It's a really pretty girl almost resembling like you, but her physical appearance has no flaws. But the one of the main difference between the two of you is that her attitude is, well not really pleasing and good if you asked me. She can't also touch other people but she can control you when you're experiencing uncontrollable negative emotions, hence it's the reason why you switch personalities in times of stressful events).

He'll be in a state of panic when you limbs got cut off again. He might take you to the nearest hospital but you told him that doctors will probably hold an experiment on you if they learned about your regenerative abilities. So the only solution he can make up with is him stitching your limbs together so you wouldn't produce another clone. After some weeks your body is back to normal and there is no hint of scars on your arms and legs. He is relieved that you are feeling better now.

You mentioned of how you never felt satisfied with your daily life despite being talented at the things you do. He may ask the reason why but you couldn't really find the answer. You often see your classmates chatting and having a great time, why couldn't you have that too despite helping them out when they need assistance? Are you not enough? Are you boring or too loud? Are you ugly? You couldn't even know the answer. The only theory he can make up is that your insecurities and hatred against other people can feed up the "demon" in you to be stronger and take over you. And that hallucination of yours is a reflection of your wrath, envy, and greed getting stronger if you loose control because of you looking for your own perfection. So you got to take a hold on yourself and actually start appreciating yourself. He doesn't blame you if you feel insecure about yourself, but you got to start to change and be more open to everybody even to him if you need advice in your life. He'll make you remind that despite having your own flaws, your kindness shouldn't be abused by other people who wants to take advantage of it and he's thankful that you helped him out in his darkest times when others can't or don't want to. And you shouldn't bring yourself down most of the times. But your "friend" is not pleased with this though. She often reminds you that you're just a pawn to be used by other people and how you wouldn't be strong or approachable without her. Often gaslighting you at times since she's scared of getting physically weaker because of your humanity taking over. So you and him have to work hard to make this bitch calm down. He'll give you lots of hugs and kisses and whispering to your ear about how he loves you. It's your guardian angel helping you out as best as possible battling with your worst enemy, the devil in your head and consciousness.

Samuel Seo/Johan Seong/Hudson Ahn/Daniel Park (post-Gun training arc)/Jace Park/Magami Kenta/Kwak Jichang/Taesoo Ma/Mandeok

He's not really surprised or disturbed by this discovery. But that doesn't mean he's not concerned. It might have hurt on your part to be cut off over and over again. And it might not be obvious since he's mostly calm at times but he doesn't like it when he sees you experiencing this phenomenon. It may have been something along with black magic or a curse even if he doesn't really believe in those unrealistic stuff. But so far he believes that what you're experiencing is not scientifically possible.

A little background story: He'll be asking why your devil just wouldn't leave you alone. You explained to him that you didn't knew either as you just woke up with no prominent scars or wounds on your body. You remembered being in a fight with your so called "friends" who have betrayed you and who have taken your life somewhere between the woods when they asked you out for camping. The authorities couldn't lock them up because of lack of evidence against them. Then you just woke up on your house like nothing happened. You were shocked that the year was different from when you died, maybe around 1987. You tried making contact with the people you used to know in your past life but you couldn't get a hold on them. They're probably dead or they may have forgotten about you. You just didn't know. He suggested if you got reincarnated in a new body but it's far from truth. Your body still looked exactly the same like in the past. And it just doesn't make sense if you woke up with a devil whispering to your ear about the nastiest shit ever and you just don't age at all.

He'll also be in a state of shock the moment your body produces another clone or when your limbs got cut off. He doesn't know what to do since you producing a clone that gets stronger can affect your mental health and you're both in the middle of a fight that can harm both of your lives. He will have a hard decision if he should just run away with you or fuck up that bastard's face for getting you hurt.

Like I said, they might not be the most affectionate out of the bunch but some of them are more mentally stable than the others above except for Samuel and Johan but anwaysss. He'll make sure that you eat normally and sleep well. He'll have a chat with you there and then so it wouldn't trigger your negative emotions and keep them in control. And he'll also spend his quality time with you even when he's tired like cuddling with you on the bed and giving your head some pecks.

Lookism: Vasco Rant

Actually I am so pissed at Daniel being the leader of the Allied forces because everything was setting up for Vasco to be the leader. 

At the end of the God Dog arc Gun thinks that Vasco has natural leadership. Johan shown by the one night arc becomes incedibly jealous of Vasco because of his leadership.

During the hostel arc, Vasco was in Seoul for like three days and created the homeless fam right in hostel territory. Moreover, Vasco has an alliance with hostel. Big Mama went to Vasco! Not Daniel, when Eli and Warren joined the workers. 

The hunt for big deal i know ended with like Vasco, Daniel, and Zack helping to save big deal. but it was also more of a foundation of Burn Knuckles creating another alliance with one of the major crews.

Analyzing Lee Jinsung/Zack Lee

"A strong fighter is not one who always wins, but one who stands after defeat”

Do not repost, or copy my analysis without my permission. I’ve poured my heart and soul into it. 

I've seen many people write analysis on characters like Gimyung, Jiho, Shinwoo or Johan, but I've never seen one about Jinsung, so I decided to write this to break down his personality and elaborate his character development.

Without a doubt, Jinsung is one of the most beautiful characters of Lookism, especially with his hair down. He has a very good fashion sense, paying attention to his looks when it comes to outshining his peers. He tends to wear gray scale colored brand clothing. On several occasions, he has worn earrings. Jinsung has a serious resting face, with sharp glaring eyes, which in turn, easily intimidates those who look at him. He only occasionally smiles, and this typically takes place either when he is with Mijin or when he is fighting someone of great strength and beating them. When he’s extremely sincere in a fight, his eye is drawn glowing sky blue.

I don’t have much to write in this section, but I just wanted to point out how beautifully he was drawn, especially in the God Dog arc.

iii. bullying and redemption

TW: Mention of bullying and rape

1. It is stated that he saved Yohan/Johan from getting bullied several times in the past, when they were in elementary and middle school. This involved severely beating up the bullies.

Jisnung was kind-hearted despite his bad manners and extreme imprudence even before meeting Hyungseok. He assisted Mira and Yohan in numerous circumstances relating to their pasts, such as rushing Mijin to the hospital (episode and 94) and protecting Yohan from bullies, but this kind of generosity was largely reserved for those who were close to him.

2. In the beginning, he had a pretty rocky relationship with Hyungseok/Daniel. When Little Hyungseok, who was trying to start over after transferring schools, approached him and Mijin, he thought that he was harassing Mijin and beat him up. He went to a convenience store where Hyungseok worked at night to buy alcohol and cigarettes. He beat up Hyungseok, bought some cigarettes and alcohol, and then he left. Even so, he proudly boasted about it again the following day at school and punched Big Hyungseok, who was attempting to stop him out of a fit of rage.

3. He engaged in a fight with Big Hyungseok but was unable to hit Hyungseok's perfect body with even one effective blow and kept missing. Finally, Hyungseok delivered a body blow, ending the fight.

In the Cult Arc, it was revealed that Jinsung was regarded as the strongest student at his middle school (episode 133). This significantly boosted his ego, which when combined with his extremely short fuse and bad temper, was the primary cause of the majority, if not all, of his fights as well as the aggression he showed toward the helpless.

4. He kept his word to Mijin/Mira and didn't react when getting bullied by the bullies who got into a fight in the "Deviation" episode. He appeared to have at least partially realized that bullying is bad because it appeared that what he was facing now was similar to what he did in the past. 

5. He said, "Hey, you guys, don't bully him," to the group of Jin Hobin/Vin who were attempting to harass Jiho. Hobin and Jiho were taken aback by the words.

6. He asked Namsoo to buy some sneakers from Craigslist, but Namsoo accepted it as an order even though he smiled and spoke kindly (because of his past as a bully). Because of that, Namsoo begged sellers to sell cheaply, not daring to say that the money Jinsunng gave him was quite less. Namsoo traded the sneakers, but it was a scam, and he was robbed of his money and even beaten up. In response, Jinsung went to the swindlers with Hyungseok, saying that he will get his money back, and Vasco, who heard everything about the scam, followed along. He was initially injured in a surprise attack, but he held out until the end because Mijin was watching and single-handedly defeated the three imposters.  

7. He helped Jiho and also regarded Jiho as a friend.

8. Jinsung suffered arm and rib injuries while battling Zeus to prevent Mijin from being raped. Assistant Instructor Won Bin, who had recently lost his teeth due to being struck in the face by Zeus, crawled on the ground at this point and caught Zeus by the ankles, startling him. When the students, who were making fun of Won Bin because he was ugly while Zeus was handsome, said, "Won Bin is the criminal," Jinsung became enraged, told them to keep quiet, and bowed down to Won Bin to show respect as he was being taken to the hospital.  

9. While being beaten by Shin Daehoon, he thought back to the time he beat Park Hyungseok by himself the other day, confessing, "I was like that." and feeling regret for his past deeds.

10. Jinsung was suspicious when little Hyungseok came to school instead of big Hyungseok due to body mix up. Of course, he did not doubt that he has two bodies, but he suspected that Little Hyungseok was being bullied by Big Hyungseok. Then, when Taeseong/Logan started a fight with Hyungseok again, he saved Hyungseok.

Jinsung gradually changed after meeting Hyungseok. He had to maintain his composure in the face of those making fun of him because he had promised his Mijin not to fight, and in doing so, he discovered what it was like for his own victims. He began to stop bothering those under him after realizing his immature empowerment actions were wrong (episode 19), and he was even shown to be remorseful. Although his friends made comments about this behavior, Zack didn't find it to be particularly bothersome to waste time picking on others. His tolerance allowed him to mature impressively in a short amount of time.

When someone tried to annoy him, he would try to reason with them instead of getting into a fight. In terms of how he treated other people, he would reprimand them for unfair behavior but tried to control it before it escalated to violence. Even though there was nothing to apologize for, he kept his cool. This is because he doesn't want to physically fight people and cause them to think he's weak-willed, which would make Mijin unhappy.

iv. guilt

1 . He has helped Jiho countless times, but he felt that it was his fault that Jiho ended up going in the wrong path, ending up etc. He also grieved Jiho’s death and felt that he could’ve done more to help Jiho learn the correct path.

2. Youngmi Heo/Jasmine Huh sold paraphernalia using Mijin’s picture to pretend to be her. Jisnung was able to catch Youngmi and he threatened her to never show her face around him and after that she ran away from home and joined Hostel A.  

Jinsung went to find Youngmi after her father told him he missed her. Jinsung felt guilty because he thought that Youngmi ran away because he threatened her. He was able to find her and ordered her to come with him, but she refused saying her father sexually assaulted her. Jinsung decided to let her go a second time. It was only after that he realized that she lied again.

After all the incidents, he went to visit Yohan’s mother in the hospital. When Yohan's mother asked Jinsung to tell Yohan that she wanted to see Yohan. He vowed that he will bring him back so that he doesn't become like Wang Ohchun/Olly, who committed suicide. In this case, Jinsung also blamed himself and felt guilt, and was strongly determined not to let any incident like Ohchun’s suicide happen again.

It was stated that he went looking for Yohan and Youngmi every morning.

In the end, he found Yohan and told him to go back to his mom. Johan refused, smiling bitterly. Jinsung claimed that he was going to force Yohan. In the end, he started fighting with Yohan. Even though Jinsung was able to put up a good fight, he held back a little because he was aware of Yohn’s eye condition. 

Jisnung eventually decided to help Yohan, who wants to take revenge on Gun.

Here, we can see that Jinsung feels that he has a huge responsibility in helping his acquaintances. Being unable to do that makes him feel regret. This can also be linked to his past as a bully, since he used to prey on these kinds of people. This makes Jinsung's character much more humane, as it beautifully overlaps with his redemption.

v. love and jealousy for mijin

1. During lunch time, when Lee Taesung/Logan’s right-hand man, Jegal Gong, was looking for something to make him fight with someone in order to show off Taesung's power to the whole school, he pushed Jinsung, who was passing by, to spill side dishes on Taesung's clothes. Of course, Taesung, who was angry at this, almost got into a fight, but when Mijin persuaded Jinsung not to fight, he apologized to Lee Taesung but when Taesung poured soybean paste soup on Mijin's head as revenge, Jinsung became enraged and a fight broke out. 

2. He told Vasco to be 'gentle and fast' and to be 'kind but manly' when he was asked for dating advice.

3. He went on a date with Mijin and was surprised to see a child with her. He thought it was her child and started assuring her about how he was going to be there to support her. After hearing Mijin’s explanation on how she found the girl alone in a restaurant, Jinsung decided to help her.  

4. When he found out that his classmate, Heo Youngmi, was selling stockings by stealing Mi-jin's picture, he robbed the stocking buyer and warned Youngmi.

5. While on a train trip to Cheongryang with his friends, there was a bit of a fight with local gangsters on the train, but they still arrived in Cheongryang without much problems. He promised Mijin that he will shave his head if he fights one more time, but he got into a fight with Cheongryang-fam, so he later shaved his head.

It has been shown numerous times in the whole series that Jinsung has romantic feelings for Mijin. Many of the fights in early Lookism occurred because Jinsung wanted to protect Mijin. He has an urge to prove that he is the best to her, which was clearly demonstrated in sports day of J High. Jinsung was unable to beat Hyungseok in almost every sport because Hyungseok had a perfect body. However he was able to catch Mijin’s phone from falling from the ground even before Hyungseok could. 

From the redemption section, we can already see that Mijin played a huge and prominent role in Jinsung's redemption. Jinsung decided to stop fighting because of Mijin but he could never tolerate anyone harassing her and he would break his promise in that case.

He was always shown to be jealous when anyone seemed to like her, or make comments on her. When they were young, Jinsung was jealous because Yohan had feelings for Mijin.

vi. pride and ego

In the God Dog arc, he started his training in boxing again. While reminiscing at this time, he argued with his boxing director, saying that he wanted to become a pro, but his boxing teacher said that he had emotions in his punches and told him that he wouldn’t teach him unless he removed those emotions. According to his boxing teacher, he was born with the talent of boxing, and has learnt everything. So, his boxing teacher decided a training routine for him that involved jumping ropes and jogging, so he would get a stronger lower body. 

He was shamed by a few of God Dog’s members (who were in the same gym) for jumping ropes. At this point, Jinsung calmly replied by saying that he wasn’t an amateur boxer, but he was a pro. Afterwards, Kwon Seungryong threw a glove at Jinsung and sarcastically said, "Teach an amateur a lesson. Pro." Jinsung refused, saying that he needs to get rid of the emotions in his punches. At this time, the boxing teacher came and saw him patiently enduring ridicule from his juniors and Seungryong. After getting approval from the teacher, he climbed into the ring and the match between the two began.

Afterwards, Jinsung effortlessly dodged all of Seungryong's punches and was driven into a corner, however, Jingung was able to defeat Seungryong due to having a strong lower body. After that, he went to jog again, but Kwon Seungryong, who came to retaliate with a group of God Dog, Then Jinsung said, "I don't fight unless it's on the ring. Cause I'm a pro. No, I don't 'fight' outside. I beat you to death." Saying that, he easily brushed off Kwon Seungryong and God Dog. Afterwards, Kwon Seungryong said, "I remember you now. You came in second place in that middle school boxing tournament. You're Zach Lee." He also revealed the fact that the head of God Dog was Seong Yohan.

Afterwards, he saved Yohan from getting his teeth pulled out by Gun and asked Yohan "Are you okay?". He introduced himself as the guy who beats up anyone who bullies Johan since their childhood to Gun. Jinsung prepared to fight Gun, as he was 'bullying' Yohan. Gun was impressed by Jinsung's strong lower body, his flexibility and speed. Jinsung ignored Gun's praise and almost hit Gun with a follow-up hit, but he was counterattacked and was about to get hit when Vasco and Hyungseok rushed in and helped.  The situation ended when Gun decided to resign.

Even at school, Jinsung continued to train his body. At this time, he showed signs of reflecting on what he had done in the past.

From this section, we can see that Jinsung paused boxing after he became second in Middle School Boxing. Boxing was his passion, that was hugely tangled with his pride. After losing to Yohan, he gave up on his hobby, but still maintained a confident and strong attitude about his fighting ability. This showed us that he was sensitive about his fighting skills, and he refused to show anyone his vulnerable side.

vii. depression

Jinsung immediately rushed with his bicycle to Club Vivi after Kim Gimyung called him and said that Hyungseok was in danger. After he arrived there, he and Vasco had to fight Yohan to get into the club. When Jang Hyun/Eli tried to intervene, Jinsung grabbed Yohan's foot and told the others to go in and he'll take care of Yohan.

Jinsung was defeated by Yohan and passed out. And after everything was over, he decided to help Johan, but he blamed himself for not doing anything, lamenting his situation. After that, he clutched his chest and sobbed, and entered Heat Mode.

In the Summit Arc, where the four major crews were gathered, Jinsung came to save Yohan. He said that he was weak but he was going to try and save Yohan. Later, Mandeok, who was asked by Yoojin to deal with Hyeongseok, knocked Jinsung to the floor. However, Jinsung got up and stood behind Mandeok to stop him and complained how he never won any fight (which wasn't true, but we can assume that he was talking about his recent fights) but his boxing instructor said that he was a genius and was full of talent.  After Mandeok punched him again, Jinsung asked if he really was a boxer. He was ignored and punched again but he got up and complained about his boxing. He got punched in the side of his face and flew away. However, he suddenly rotated his body and threw a punch at Mandeok. Hyungseok was surprised by this because he saw his body do that in the ultra instinct state but Jinsung never witnessed that.

In response, Yoojin became interested in Jinsung, and when Mandeok asked him his name, Jinsung said, "Me? Lee Jinsung." and prepared to fight properly.

Mandeok hit him again, but Jinsung didn't show much reaction and asked why he kept hitting him with just that. Mandeok punched him, but Jinsung landed an uppercut at the same time. Then, he grabbed Mandeok's arm by his armpit and punched him in the head. When Mandeok hesitated, he grabbed him by the back of the head and headbutted him, saying that boxing is done with the head. Mandeok punched him in the chin and he flew away, but he stepped on the blind Yohan's face and blew Mandeok's head with a bang and said, "Fuck the pride. I won't lose anymore." 

Later, Jinsung asked Yohan if his eyes were okay. Then, Yohan said thank you and said he would repay the debt by allying with Jinsung, Hyungseok, Burn Knuckles and Hostel.

Afterwards, Jinsung asked Hyeongseok, who came to school, what conversation he had with Yoojin that day and why he disappeared with Ilhaehoe. However, Hyungseok hesitated and did not answer. When Park Haneul informed him that the teacher was calling, Hyungseok apologized and went to the principal's office, saying that he will explain soon. Because of Hyungseok's suspicious attitude, Jinsung looked at him with meaningful eyes.

Following Beomjae's strategy, he and Beomjae infiltrated an entertainment establishment in Gangbuk as guests. However, when he learnt that some minor girls were somewhat forced to work there, he became furious and overturned Beomjae's plan and beat down all Gangbuk thugs who look after the establishment, saying that he won't lose anymore. Beomjae, who saw it, monologued that it was more complete than before, and that it was like watching Yohan fight.

Jinsung asked the gangsters where Ansan Public is stationed, but the gangsters said they didn’t know. Then, Choi Changwon, who seems to have come to raid the business, appeared and started fighting, but Jinsung confronted Changwon.

Observing Changwon's posture, Jinsung noticed that kickboxing was his base, prepared for kickboxing and tried to attack with a custom tactic, but was halfway trampled by Changwon's irregular tattoo pen attack and lost with a knee kick to the face. Jinsung's facial expression at this time was the same as the crying face right before entering the body heating state in the 3rd affiliate arc, and the monologue said that his body was becoming hot.

After that, he fainted and woke up and lamented that he lost again, and when he saw Vasco crying as he hugged Beom Jae, who had been hacked up by the tattoo pen, he blamed himself for losing, and searched all the businesses in Gangbuk to find Ansan public. He found Jaehee and challenged him to a fight, but he lost mercilessly and despaired.

After that, he went looking for Changwon when he encountered Jaehee. Jaehee tried to irritate Jinsung by saying that it was okay to lose and it was easy to give up and Jinsung became enraged and started a fight. Jaehee commented that he was stronger than Changwon. Jinsung was seemingly defeated when his body heat activated. Jisnung clinched Jaehee and bit his ear, and in the monologue, Jinsung said he would show Jaehee what boxing is. Jinsung stuck Jaehee in a car, and punched him repeatedly. Then Jinsung said “Winning is a damn tough thing to do. You said you were stronger than that guy, right? Then since I won against you, I didn’t lose today.” and he monologued “ I caught up to others too. It’s for real now.”

Afterwards, Jinsung hit Taesoo Ma using a chain with a pivot blow. He said “I picked this up on the way. But it’s pretty useful. I look like a real boxer now.” The situation ended when Lee Jihoon came and defeated Taesoo.

Later, he was seen eating Haejangguk at a restaurant, feeling ashamed of his disastrous record at the 2nd affiliate and his own talent. The lady at the soup restaurant asked where he got hit, and no matter how he explained it, the lady claimed that it looked like he was beaten one-sidedly, which made it even more miserable for JInsung. He didn’t even shed tears, as if he's used to losing now. While eating soup, he meets Ma Cho-il and Ji-gong.

While talking with Cho-il and Ji-gong, he was surprised to hear that Cho-il and Ji-gong used to fight before. Then, following the advice of Ji-gong, he went to Daeho Temple in Daeho Mountain. He begged Ji Gongseop to teach him how to fight, and he received instruction, but was cheated into doing chores.

Still continuing to clean the courthouse, he got angry at Gongseop for not teaching him how to fight and just playing him. He threw punches with all his might, but there was no damage at all, and Gongseop told him to go down the mountain because he only needed to clean the courtroom. Then Jisnung said that he wanted to learn because he had never won properly. Those words moved Gongseop's heart, and he decided to teach Jinsung.

It is pretty clear that Jinsung's depression has triggered him to get into heat mode several times. At this stage, he's pretty crazy too, except he lacks excitement and a maniac smile, unlike Hyungseok and Seongeon. He has said things like boxing is done with the head and that fighting with chains is proper boxing countless times during this phase.

vii. reformation and strenghtening

In episode 411, Gongseop finally came out with the teachings including the transfer of the realm. As much as he learned directly from the first-generation king, Jinsung became greatly stronger. At this time, the narration described him as a boxer rather than a dirty boxer after a long time. It may have been that he regained his pride because he was taught by Ji Gong-seop that 'the important thing for a boxer is not winning'. However, even when he fought Kenta, he just came out as a boxer, so maybe he just put it in.

In episode 423, he finally showed up. After being ordered by Mandeok to burn down Big Deal Street, Kenta Magami threw a lighter on the greasy street, and Jinsung snatched the lighter and held it in his hand.

In episode 424, it was shown that he succeeded in growing up while being trained under Gongseop and completely overcoming the slump. According to Gongseop's comment, as Jinsung’s boxing instructor said, Jinsung’s specs were certainly high, but his excessive entanglement in the shock of defeat prevented him from exerting his full strength. In other words, he was trapped in a vicious cycle of 'I was defeated - I was caught up in this defeat and couldn't fight properly - and because of that, I lost again'. In a way, it was natural that even Seongeon and Hyun risked their lives against the first-generation king to barely reach the level, but Lee Jin-seong also reached the level or just below it in a month at the longest. In other words, in terms of level, he had already reached a level similar to them, but he was entangled in his defeat slump and couldn't exert his strength. 

Jinsung received Kenta’s attack and subdued it with a single blow. After that, he quickly approached Mandeok , who was fighting Vasco, and even knocked him down once by feeding him a series of attacks. Even in episode 425, Mandeok's power-packed punches were easily blocked and continued to give critical hits, but when Mandeok used capoeira, Jinsung was pushed against the wall. However, there was no sign of blood splattering while the wall was being smashed, and it showed a crazy toughness to stop it again . After that, the confrontation with Mandeok was canceled due to the appearance of Gun. Soon after, Jihoon, who was brought by Yoojin, appeared and had a confrontation with Hyung-seok and Vasco.

The moment Jihoon evaded Vasco's compression low kick, Jinsung tried to hit it with a punch, but failed, and Hyungseok and Vasco slammed into the floor or wall, but Jinsung was the only one who endured it. After that, looking at Jihoon, he thought of him as a mountain to overcome and fought again, but was fooled by an invisible attack.

His personality appears to be calmer than after receiving Gongseop's training.  In particular, when Park Hyeongseok recruited Ahn Hyunseong into the Allied Crew, he was very reluctant, but in order to prevent a large force, he briefly set aside his past bad ties.  If Jinsung were still the same as he was in the past, he might have managed without any of that.

ix. flaws

He has a very rough personality, so he has a strong tendency to resolve his intentions through fighting, whether it's good or bad. In fact, Kim Mijin/Mira acts as a brake for Jinsung.

When they first met, he assaulted Hyungseok in the street. Later, when they ran into each other at the convenience store while he was buying alcohol and cigarettes, he assaulted him once more. His friends even took pictures of his genitalia and silenced him. 

It should be taken into account that Hyeongseok in the beginning of the series also appeared as a strange character who monologues that he was happy to be regarded as a friend among the people who harassed him. In other words, it was a ridiculous representation in which the victim of school violence thought and perceived the perspective of the offender. 

x. thinking and intitution

Throughout the series, it was clear that Jinsung wants to be self-reliant, to prove his strength and resist weakness, to be important in his world, to dominate the environment, and to stay in control of the situation. For example in the God Dog arc, Hyungseok said "Don't hurt Zack" and Vasco said "Power exists for the weak" and Jinsung immediately got embarrassed and angry at that because he believed that he doesn't need any other people's help.

He wants to keep the environment, and especially other people, from hurting those he care about (Mijin, Yohan). From an early age, he understands that this requires strength, will, persistence, and endurance—qualities that he developed in himself. He prided himself and his talent in fighting and bragged about it quite a lot.

His basic desire and fear revolves around the security of people he loves. He always protected Mijin from any danger and he got involved in gangs to protect Yohan. The more he built up his ego in order to protect, the more sensitive he became to any real or imaginary slight to their self-respect, authority, or preeminence. 

As the series progressed and his opponents got stronger, Jinsung became more desperate. He went on trying different methods and changing his mindset to win in the fights, but he kept losing. Jinsung became depressed and kept saying how he never won a fight, ignoring his previous records.

In the beginning of the series, he never wanted anyone, especially Mijin, to witness his vulnerable side, which was mostly losing in fights. He wanted to prove that he was capable to the people he wanted to protect. When his depression phase started, his sensitivity and vulnerability got more exposed to his friends. But he realized that his friends were stronger than him and were capable of protecting themselves, which hugely contradicted his pride and his urge to be self-reliant.

Now that he's calm and stronger after receiving training from Gongseop, he has regained his self confidence. He doesn't feel the need to prove anything to anyone anymore, for he knows that he's capable and strong. Winning is not the biggest factor to him right now.

Conclusion:

To be honest, analyzing Jinsung was difficult because different events, people and aspects brought out different sides of him. Regardless of that, I think he had one of the best character developments in the series, even though his depression phase was a mess.

The Disenchanted Story of Olly Wang

In the Manhwa Lookism by Park Taejoon, the character Olly Wang (Wang Ochun) died at the end of the Hostel arc. He committed suicide after discovering the differences between the intense emotions he felt during the tragic events of his life. He most likely had several mental illnesses as he frequently severely overdosed and obsessed over Eli Jang (Jang Hyun) to the point where he lived just to find him again. Despite being so mentally and physically numb from his mental and physical illnesses, he still paid quota to Jong Gun every month to protect Hostel B from the 4 Major Crews. He lived a life of despair, and despite all of his bad choices, most things that he did were for selfless reasons.

You could say that his life was rather Disenchanted.

“Disenchanted” is also the name of a song from the early 2000s rock band My Chemical Romance. They always made sensational music and “Disenchanted” has got to be one of my favorite songs. One thing that makes me love it so much is that some of the lyrics remind me so much of Olly and everything that he went through in his life. So I’m gonna do a little analysis/ramble about the song and how some of the lyrics remind me so much of one of my favorite characters in Lookism, who is most definitely the most underrated one!!

So this is the first verse of the song and there are a few lyrics here that stand out to me a lot. ((btw i’m gonna put all the lyrics in italics so they stand out from the rest of the text))

“Well, I was there on the day

They sold the cause for the queen

And when the lights all went out

We watched our lives on the screen

I hate the ending myself

But it started with an alright scene”

So the first thing that really stood out to me was when it said “We watched our lives on the screen.” Guys. Remember that movie that Olly was watching about family, the one he got from Sally? The one he watched on the screen on the roof of his building and on his phone while he was with Gun? The film probably brought back a lot of memories of the past with Hostel B, as if he was watching his life.

Another few lines that reminded me of Olly were, “I hate the ending myself / But it started with an alright scene.” At the end of Olly’s story, he ended his own life by jumping from the roof of the building the old Hostel resided in. His life started out okay, when he was friends with Heather and when he first met Eli, but things went very downhill from there and he was never really happy for the rest of his life.

“It was the roar of the crowd

That gave me heartache to sing

It was a lie when they smiled

And said, ‘You won’t feel a thing.’

And as we ran from the cops

We laughed so hard it would sting”

So in these lines, the first one that stuck out to me was “It was a lie when they smiled / And said, ‘You won’t feel a thing.’” I’m sure you guys can figure out why. With Olly’s illness, he was told that he would never feel pain. However, despite severely overdosing on pills that were prescribed for this illness, the pain he ended up feeling in the end was emotional rather than physical. He was so numb physically that he became emotionally numb, and he never felt fear before because he didn’t fear getting hurt. When Eli was beating him after the incident with Heather, Olly swore he was fleeing fear for the first time in his life. However, he realized in the end that the emotion he felt was guilt over something that wasn’t even entirely his fault. And he searched for years to find Eli so he could feel something again, feel the things that he thought was fear. However, it was guilt all along. Despite having an illness that made it impossible for him to feel physical pain, the agonizing sensation of guilt was what killed him in the end.

The other group of lines that reminded me of Olly was when it said: “And as we ran from the cops / We laughed so hard it would sting.” This isn’t as deep as the other one, but since Hostel is a crime organization and Olly used to commit crimes alongside Eli in the past, it reminded me of him because he seemed happy when he was doing those kinds of things.

“If I’m so wrong

How can you listen all night long?

Now will it matter after I’m gone

Because you never learned a goddamn thing”

In the pre-chorus, the lines that remind me of Olly is when it said, “Now will it matter after I’m gone / Becuase you never learned a goddamn thing.” I thought this was really powerful because Olly spent almost three years of his life paying Gun a $100,000 dollar quota every month just so Sally (Serim) and Warren (i don’t know what his korean name is i’m sorry) wouldn’t get dragged into the 4 Major Crews and wouldn’t get hurt. Despite the fact that they mistreated him so much, he still did this for them, which was basically saving their lives. And even after he died, they still had no idea about what he had done for them; they never learned.

“You’re just a sad song with nothing to say

About a lifelong wait for a hospital stay

And if you think that I’m wrong

This never meant nothing to you”

The chorus doesn’t relate much to Olly, but the line “This never meant nothing to you” is similar to what I said about the pre-chorus. Sally and Warren knew nothing about what Olly did to protect them despite the fact that they mistreated him so much in the past.

Since the second verse doesn’t remind me much of him and the pre-chorus and chorus are the same, I’m gonna skip to the post-chorus, which is the last verse I’ll talk about.

“So go, go away

Just go, run away

But where did you run to?

And where did you hide?

Go find another way, price you pay”

I think this whole verse reminds me of him so much. Eli ran away with his baby after the incident with Heather’s death. He asked his family, “How about we play hide and seek?” and disappeared for years. Olly was searching for Eli for years, wondering where he went to hide, while Eli was finding another path for himself, trying to escape the crews and abandoning his family. He did it so he wouldn’t hurt them anymore, but they were left by themselves without someone that they loved. And the price paid when he returned was the loss of Olly’s precious life.

The Last Light

There is a moment in David Lynch's Twin Peaks: The Return that on its incandescent surface could have been lifted, weightless, from the great post-war dream of materialist deliverance: The top on the convertible is down, the radio on; The Paris Sisters are singing I Love How You Love Me as a reincarnated Laura Palmer lifts her face to a cloudless sky. Within the tapestry of this early Phil Spector production — his trademark reverb eternally associated with Romance and Death (two conditions Spector knew all too well) — the voice of Priscilla Paris is a siren sound from the American Beyond. We could be hearing a dream goddess lullaby from the whispering gallery, or sweet nothings from the crypt. We don't know. We'll never know. Just as Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood keeps us guessing with the elusive murmur that “Sharon Tate will never die,” granting her a gaudy, wondrous L.A. to cavort in where it's 1969 forever and movie stars still matter, so we find ourselves in Tarantino’s version of paradise (complete with flame throwers to the face). In this oneiric echo chamber, momentarily shared by Lynch and Tarantino, Surrealism smiles down upon a vision of American blondness; muscle cars soaked in sunlight; the terrible ecstasy of unending motion; candy for the eye and ear.

David Lynch’s favorite film, to this day, remains Otto e Mezzo, directed by Western Europe's sorcerer of confectionary delights, Federico Fellini; the man who put the “dolce” in La Dolce Vita. And here you have a fleeting taste of ideologies swirled together and spun like ribbon candy: a blur of four-wheeled luxury from the New World, zooming past regional splendor into that fraternity of man: the socio-economic nirvana imagined by Karl Marx.

Careening from one via to another at harrowing, white-knuckle speeds, Fellini was heard to lament that “Some of the neo-realists seem to think that they cannot make a film unless they have a man in old clothes in front of the camera.” George Bluestone, recording these words in 1957 for the pages of Film Culture, was sittings in the literal passenger seat of the ideal metaphor of post-war ebullience in action: that famous Black Chevy skirting the Italian Scylla (the Vatican) and its equally dogmatic Charybdis (the Party); expert, 20th century precision guiding them through Roman streets with graffiti-scrawled churches proudly bearing the hammer and sickle. At those velocities, anything could make sense.

“What for you is the greatest human quality?”, Bluestone asks. Fellini responds, “Love of one’s fellows,” a period-appropriate oath that rings true to his brand of ecumenical solidarity.

“The greatest fault?”

“Egoism.”

Try, if you will, to imagine our more locally sourced egoists nodding along with Fellini in soulful agreement on that one. As a kind of compatriot of Edgar Allan Poe, David Lynch (and, to some extent, Tarantino) spawns from his abiding axiom that “The death of a beautiful woman is, unquestionably, the most poetic topic in the world.” In Lynch’s hands, American television has become a brightly lit seance for Poe’s ethereal dead. Immortal creatures afflicted with the dream of physical existence, then afflicting the dreamers. Twin Peaks: The Return modifies Poe's axiomatic truth with great help from Amanda Seyfried's Becky and her pair of visionary's eyes, melting Spector's dark edifice of sugar in deathless, Sternbergian close-up — iridescent search lights, ever more urgently scanning the sky above for a sun to swallow her whole. We can only witness and internalize this shimmering ingenue trading places with Old Sol, as if the drugs she's consumed have entered our system and not hers.

Filmmakers like Fellini and Lynch celebrate bodily extremes in intriguing, if differing ways that should naturally gallop right beyond the pale but nevertheless become wholly, weirdly digestible. It is perhaps the innocent glee, even wonderment, of these artists in the vast variety of shapes the human body can assume; innocence which acts as a giant eraser for every awareness on our part of how physical representation in the age of political correctness is meant to function. Lynch is able to present the disabled as by turns childlike, mysterious or magical beings without ever worrying about lending them agency (The Elephant Man's John Merrick is a passive whipping boy for seemingly the whole of Victorian London) or the lie of adult sophistication (the latest Twin Peaks iteration includes a pint-sized hitman who whines like a puppy when his icepick is broken).

Fellini's dwarfs and grotesques, on the other hand, emerge from the struggle of a one-time Marc'Aurelio cartoonist willing one-dimensional images into three-dimensional embodiment. His big women, of course, are fetish figures. They always were. Gargantuan beauties, evidence of a sexual ideal formed in infancy: the big Italian mammissima, seen from below. As Fellini grew into a rather large adult himself, this ideal was simply re-scaled accordingly (even the icy mountain of Anita Ekberg takes on new implication). Goddesses all, they are, however, not meant for conventional movie stardom.

And what of Tarantino? Once Upon a Time's Margot Robbie IS the no-longer-doomed Sharon Tate as she watches herself on the big screen; enjoying a thrill that few have ever known so guilelessly that any half-baked charges of narcissism shrivel to nullity before they can escape a single throat. Here before us is an essential glimpse into the vanishing phenomenon of movie stardom itself, reflexive handwringing from the woke balconies notwithstanding. Tarantino has at last achieved something transcendental: even his grotesques — slack-jawed, gap-toothed, gormless members of the Manson Family conflated with more contemporary Identitarian cultists on the lookout for 'Lookism', knives unsheathed — are downright mythic. Robbie's Tate is a visage both generically perfect and possessed by the angels, every one of them a blond resident of LA County, sincere and unknowable as desert light.  

The vampires, creatures of night slain by sunlight, infiltrated the movie theaters in the 1920s and never left. They sit next to us in the dark, having ceded the power to hypnotize us to the glowing screen itself. Photochemical vagaries invariably allow movie darkness to behave in impossible ways; as if the physical properties of film itself knew no rules, and thus invited us to accept its essential anarchy without question. Before us is a darkness that GLOWS.

A Black & White image flipped into negative can produce black fire, or the black sunlight which illuminated the Transylvanian forests of Nosferatu, through which a box-like carriage rattles at Mack Sennett speed. But with only the smallest underexposure, a little dupey degradation of the print, or even a little imagination (such collaboration is not discouraged), this liquid blackness will spread anywhere, everywhere; the most luminous pestilence known to creation. Be it in the laughing nightmare of Fleischer cartoons of old (Out of the Inkwell, indeed) or Jean Epstein's photogenie phantasmagoria, we're left to wonder. Is daylight burning out the corner of a building, or is it the blackness of the building which is eating into the sky? As with so many such questions, film permits us no answer. We are to simply watch as characters smudge, their shadows emanating out beyond themselves, pulsing and flickering with an obsidian internal flame.

By the time Jean Epstein adapted The Fall of the House of Usher in 1928, it could wisely be said that Poe had been already aggrandized through the mechanism of carbon-arc projection; which is but one way to say that the vision that once seemed unharnessable, had at last been industrialized. Dragooned. Pressed into an ever more modern service at a pace to be measured in frames-per-second. Artists like Epstein and Chomon were the first generation to wield an immense cultural and commercial instrument; at once abidingly real and totally incomprehensible. No medium of expression predating cinema could so thoroughly lift audiences from linear time, or could as convincingly, in the words of Jean Epstein, render death as a conscious state.

Transcendentalism barely scratches the surface here. A more apposite term — the one he nuances in his film theory, “photogenie” (a genesis out of light) — pulls transitory moments, otherwise escaping human perception, into focus. If Poe engrosses us in Romantic conceptions of death as a means to visionary truth, Epstein reveals that same supposedly “elusive” end in our earthly world of telephones, sports cars, Kodak cameras for the every-man and moderne manicures for up-to-the-minute dandies.

The Victorians were falling away. And with them a system of reality contained in narrow, overwrought performances. Withered technique as a means of reflecting Nature — or, to quote Balzac, the “conjugation of objects with light” — was displaced, uncrowned by Jean Delville’s Death (1890), which embodies an altogether different kind of virtuosity, one no Academy could ever comprehend. The charcoal drawing and ode to Edgar Allan Poe’s Masque of the Red Death yearns with a combination of verve and starkness toward a capital “G” Gloom destined to escape salons.

Coming of age in a series of shady elsewheres — the fairgrounds, nickelodeon parlors and movie palaces of an Edwardian America — nitrate and its twinkling mineral essence gave Poe's crepuscular light its time to shine and  thereby illuminate the world. No longer held in the solitary confinement of a page of reproduced text or an image, however still, rendered in paint or ink. Poe's singularly tormented vision was finally written alchemically, in cinematographic rays beamed through silver salts; into moving images of such aggressive vitality as to blast every rational thing from one's mind.

All hail magic mirrors! Celestial mandalas! Giant eggs and butterfly women! Segundo de Chomón's The Red Spectre (1907) ruthlessly invades our eyes with a wraith-magician dissolving through his coffin lid in a red, hand-tinted, flame-flickering hell. His caped, skull-masked presence was to herald the manic new thespic truth that, from this moment forward, the art of acting is in how you respond to light, and how light responds to you. The Specter of Chomon's dark bauble is in every element Poe's Red Death — japing and performing tricks for us, his adoring fans and welcome guests, before announcing our doom — literary metaphor slammed against a literal backdrop of amber stalactites, pellucid as an ossuary.

Doctor Pretorius might have been musing on the history of cinema in 1935’s The Bride of Frankenstein when he said: “Sometimes I have wondered whether life wouldn't be much more amusing if we were all devils, no nonsense about angels and being good.”

eli and warren were about to fight but suddenly sally steps between the two of them and tells them to stop.

sally to eli: calm down! he isn’t looking down on you! you don’t need to fight!

eli: ...don’t need to fight?

sally: of... of course!

warren covers sally’s eyes and punches eli.

warren: sally park, don’t look.

sally, hitting warren’s head: what do you mean don’t look!? didn’t i tell you to stop?!

warren: that squirt looked down on me too.

sally: he is just a kid that doesn’t know anything!

eli lays on the ground from the punch that warren threw. warren questions if he hit eli too hard. warren’s two other friends praises warren and says “no one that got punched by warren can get up.”

eli: it hurts.... it looks like i was actually looked down upon....

he gets up, looking unharmed which shocks warren and his friends.

sally: are you okay? you’re bleeding..! what to do?! warren chae, you are too much! punching someone who doesn’t know anything? i already said he’s not that type of person! he and you are not the same! he’s not the type that is always outside fighting!

warren walks away from sally and eli. but at night, he and his two friends show up in front of sally’s house with their bags.

warren: i also! left my house! you two are really living together? are you crazy? we also came to live with you guys!!

sally: who agreed to that?!

warren: honestly speaking, (what did) you guys do together?! with me here, i definitely won’t let you (do) it!!

sally: who speaks like you omitting words like that?!

warren, whining on the floor: i don’t careeee! i will live here! don’t care don’t care don’t care! 

sally: ugh you’re so annoying!

warren to eli: hey, did you two hold hands yet? did you? did you? answer me! no, actually don’t answer me. if i hear it, i’ll get even angrier.

eli: holding hands.... something will happen. when a female and male hold hands, won’t they get kids?

warren and his friends were surprised at what eli said. they think, “what’s with this kid?”

warren: sally park. are you really going to live with this dude? it’s too dangerous. i’ll protect you. i... want to live here.

sally: no.

the chapter skips over to the “back door” crew. the boss of “back door” is pissed that a junior high kid had beat up two of the crew members (ref. chapter 232). the junior high student is identified as warren chae.

the chapter goes back to sally, eli, warren and his two friends. they are introducing themselves to each other and telling their stories. one of warren’s friend was abandoned inside a mail dropbox. his name is taeng-gu*. warren’s other friend’s name is eung-gu*. 

* these should be their korean names. i have no idea what webtoon will be changing their names into. i will be changing the names listed here when webtoon releases their official western name ^^

warren: i’m warren chae, 14 years old. i’ve known the two of them /taeng-gu and eung-gu/ for 5 years. done.

sally: i’m... i’m sally park, 14 years old. i’m living alone. done!
