Forge of the Heart
pairing: Dammon/Tav (Ká:nen Wildthorn) summary: Who doesn't want to spend some time with the most handsome blacksmith in Faerûn, talking about romance novels? are they the romance novel? whoa plot twist
this is for my beloved @bigbywlf and their beautiful tav Ká:nen!
----------
The fire from the forge is hot, sweat trailing down the tieflings skin as he hammers metal to perfection. The blaze of the sun only adds more heat to the air and the only reprieve is the occasional breeze. Baldur’s Gate keeps moving below, creatures chatting and roaming, their sights set elsewhere than the clashing of steel and stone.
Her sights, however, were only on the blacksmith as he works, blissfully indifferent to the sweltering humidity. Ká:nen Wildthorn has been seated in the corner of the forge for some time now, patient as ever while the man continues about his day. She’s borrowed a book from his room, but the text has no meaning when her attention drifts from the story of lust and wonder to her own imagination- involving herself and a very strong and sweaty tiefling.
It wasn't as if he hadn't noticed her appearance. He's checked on her repeatedly and at times she'd be lost in the book and at others, she was lost in him, his work, or possibly just lost in thought. When their eyes meet, she smiles widely as if she's happy he's paying her attention. Despite her sudden visit, she doesn't disturb his work or try to interfere.
Dammon stands as he admires the half finished project, wiping the sweat from his brow. He turns to the wood elf curiously. “You must be bored. There’s no need to wait around for me, you know.”
She smiles carelessly, setting the book down on the table. “Not at all. I’ve been thoroughly entertained this whole time.”
His grin could power the whole city and her heart feels a kick start of its own. “Well, I think this is a good time for a break. We can go inside, where it’s cooler.”
Ká:nen nods as she follows behind him, holding the book against her chest. She’ll have to return it to him before she heads back to camp, but she is interested in finding out how it ends. With a kick of her boot, the door closes shut and noise of the city stops, leaving only the two of them in a comforting silence.
“What do you think? The book, I mean.” Dammon gestures to her hands. “I don’t have many, but I thought it might be to your liking.”
Fingers tap the cover nervously at the second skip of her heart today. He thought a story of lovers having tender, intimate, private moments together was to her liking? “It’s delightful. I must admit I’m surprised though. I didn’t think this would be a tale that would interest you.”
There’s only confidence where one might assume to see embarrassment or bashfulness. Dammon is not shy in the slightest about his interests - or perhaps, better yet - he’s comfortable in her presence to not feel the need to hide who he is. “Who doesn’t enjoy romance? I like to believe at least once everyone desires a love like that. Don’t you?”
She’d choke if she tried to answer too quickly. It was encouraging to know that even in the midst of the realms' perils and surrounded by ambitions of godhood, someone still held on to simple pleasures such as love and mortality.
“I do. Recently got someone that comes to mind when I think about it.” Ká:nen sends him a teasing smirk and for a moment, she thinks he looks briefly startled.
Dammon chuckles as he rubs the back of his neck, avoiding her gaze. “Lately, I have as well.” He clears his throat and changes the subject quickly, eyeing the weapons littered around the room. “The bow you wanted me to fix- I should have it ready in the next couple of days.”
“There’s no rush. I appreciate you fixing it for me.” She sets the book down and walks towards him slowly. As she stands in front of him, every step he takes backwards, she takes forward until he's caught by a table and the gap between them nearly closes. "Enough of that. I want to hear more about this person you think of. Is she pretty?"
The tiefling takes a breath as he gazes down at her, speechless. As his eyes search hers, he slowly relaxes and laughs. "She is, in fact. She has beautiful eyes, lots of freckles, and a dashing scar on her cheek." His hand is cool against her skin as he brushes his fingers over the curved reminder of mistakes she won't make again. "Not only that, she's brave and kind- kind enough to help me not only once, but multiple times without asking for anything in return."
Ká:nen hums soft and low, leaning into his touch. "She sounds wonderful. I bet you'd really like to kiss her right now."
"I really would." He whispers, watching her lips. She set up the perfect chance. It would be a waste for him to miss it now.
He kisses her slow, hesitant. As if the moment they parted ways she would be leaving again. She smiles against his lips, tugging him closer by his apron. A sign that she wouldn't be leaving. Ká:nen encourages him as she deepens the kiss, moving her hands over his chest and then around his neck.
"I've always wanted to do that." She breaths out after she breaks the kiss.
Dammon smiles and presses his forehead against hers. "I'm nothing special, you know."
Ká:nen holds his face in her hands, staring up at him. "You are to me."

◥█̆̈◤ Six of Cups - describe your character’s childhood in as little or great detail as you prefer.
Mistra was a gentle child. She loved the sunset, and her home, and playing hide-and-seek with her sisters. She was afraid of nothing... except for heights, and of embarrassing herself in front of pretty girls. She was born in an era where a young person could be carefree -- or at least the world itself wouldn't try to keep her from it.
Her mother had been a soldier in the War of Shifting Sands. She'd lost an arm -- heroically sacrificed in the defense of her commanding officer -- and had never quite known how to leave being a soldier behind.
Slowly, Mistra's sisters followed in her mother's footsteps. Feralas. Darkshore. One by one they moved off to various deployments until only Mistra remained.
Her mother pressured her to do the same. She was surely destined for greatness -- or so the superstitions told -- and Mistra was sent to train with one of the greatest of her mother's old companions. To carry on in her mother's stead. To train under the weaponmaster E'dris Evensong, who had been training Sentinels for hundreds of years.
It was brutal work, and Mistra hated every second of it. She would leave the training grounds every night with swolen, bruised ankles and blistered palms. When she was not fast enough, she would be struck. When she could not strike, she would be chastised. So Miatra got comfortable with embarrassing herself, discovered that she had fears far worse than heights, and learned that a fight was no place for a gentle child.
... and eventually, Mistra Wildthorn became a serviceable sentinel. Hell, more than. She was a model soldier. Peerless with a bow and glaive, and nigh impossible to catch, let alone touch.
Barely an adult, she was shipped off to Ashenvale where she would stand vigil over the ancient forest.
(Thank you for the ask, Nzoth the Corruptor. You don't seem all that bad for an eldritch horror monster. <3)

Fahrenheit 451 & 1984
Fahrenheit 451 - What’s your favorite book?
this changes a lot depending on my mood, but something I always go back to is the Lost Voices trilogy. I took a lot of inspiration from it for the mermaid fic~ there’s parts in the third book that are kinda weak for me, but I love it overall
I also really love Wildthorn, because it combines a bunch of things I love: Victorian era setting, LGBT characters, mental health issues….I actually really recommend this one, I bring it with me every time I travel anywhere lol
Tumblr media
1984 - Spill a secret about yourself.
when I was little, I wrote (or started lmao) a bunch of stories about a girl named Melanie who lived in a lighthouse. I discovered a bunch of them in my desk drawer recently, which goes to show how often I clean…..anyway, I guess 7-year old me assumed that lighthouses were cut off from society or something, because Melanie’s biggest problem was apparently getting enough books to read??
I think i confused this with a book I really loved as a kid (and still occasionally reread) called The Islander, because in it they mention the main character getting sent books by boat….maybe I just assumed everyone who lived on the ocean had no access to anything and everything was brought to them by boat?? kids can be really dumb lmao

The Best Books of 2009
It's Goodreads Choice Awards season! Better known as the season of Voting For Books That Sound Good In Hopes Of Blocking Books I Know I Would Hate. I still get invested, even though these awards are largely silly and meaningless to me because there is no way I could ever consume enough content from the current year to determine what is best, or even "decently good." (current 2019-reads count: 5) It takes time for the good ones, the ones without a massive publishing campaign behind them, to reach you.
In the spirit of that thought, you know what I DO feel I have a decent handle on at this point? The publishing world's offerings from a decade ago. And so I present -- in no particular order -- my top picks in select categories that I have personally vetted and deemed to be Quality Reads. Capped at 20 where necessary, to align with the real awards (though I am ignoring the part where the awards would actually have considered books published from mid-November ‘08 until mid-November ‘09, for simplicity’s sake).
YOUNG ADULT
Tier 1
After the Moment - Garret Freymann-Weyr
Hate List - Jennifer Brown
Hold Still - Nina LaCour
How It Ends - Laura Weiss
The Indigo Notebook - Laura Resau
Lost - Jacqueline Davies
An Off Year - Claire Zulkey (look this one is just a personal fave of mine)
You Are Here - Jennifer E. Smith
[secretly I am pretty sure I'd vote for Hate List, but that is the last time I can choose a favorite in this post]
Tier 2 (not my winner picks but presented as examples of "better than most of the actual nominees of the past 5 years combined")
Breathing - Cheryl Herbsman
The Devil's Paintbox - Victoria McKernan
How to Say Goodbye in Robot - Natalie Standiford
Lady Macbeth's Daughter - Lisa M. Klein
North of Beautiful - Justina Chen
Nothing But Ghosts - Beth Kephart
Psych Major Syndrome - Alicia Thompson
Same Difference - Siobhan Vivian
Very LeFreak - Rachel Cohn (Y’ALL CAN FIGHT ME)
The Vinyl Princess - Yvonne Prinz
Wildthorn - Jane England
Willow - Julia Hoban
(YA is over-represented purely because it's the only one where I've read enough to pick a full category composed strictly of books I gave 4 or 5 stars)
MIDDLE GRADE
Lifting the Sky - Mackie D'Arge
Faith, Hope and Ivy June - Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
The Georges and the Jewels - Jane Smiley
ADULT FICTION
Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts - Lucy Dillon [romance]
The Lost Hours - Karen White
A Vintage Affair - Isabel Wolff
April & Oliver - Tess Callahan
One Second After - William Forstchen [sci fi]
BONUS: 2009 books on my TBR that I have a theory might qualify --
The Horse Dancer - JoJo Moyes
One True Theory of Love - Laura Fitzgerald
Daisy, Daisy!: A Novel of the Broadway Theater - Jo Coudert
NONFICTION
A Little Bit Wicked: Life, Love and Faith in Stages - Kristin Chenoweth [memoir]
Homer's Odyssey: How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat - Gwen Cooper [pet memoir - would that be categorized memoir or gen. nonfiction, d'you think?]
A Big Little Life: A Memoir of a Joyful Dog - Dean Koontz [pet memoir]
Howard’s End is on the Landing: A Year of Reading from Home - Susan Hill
