the only story content of the alt timeline is one comic (i know some of the mv stuff shows it but its just art with no words) and i decided to reread it today

general comment: i rly like the art for this update, the color scheme is nice and the seamless horizontal transition is so cool

anyway commentary time:

i think the all black shadow forms is just a symbolic thing because nobody comments on it, so to other characters bon and bien just look human

still its interesting that in the main timeline their default is the shadow forms and in the alt tl its the human forms. personally i also like how it emphasize the gulf between bon and bien in this tl i think, because they look very different and not related at all, compared to their shadow forms that look practically the same.

i think its a good way to portray how in the main timeline they see their father/son relationship as important probably to the point of codependents that they look so similar to each other, while in the alt timeline they seem more distant

i also like their outfits here, i think its like royal-ish outfits since theyre arguably the equivalent of the royal family because theyre the monarchs "children" there main color is blue instead of red too

reality is "brought about by the sounds of wires vibrating" and media and jacques are connected with a wire in the annotations, i dont fullt get the "rules" of how to "use" them yet but i think they tie things down to "reality" (in the annotations you use a wire to make the hypothetical "real" sorta) so ig guess the idea here is that jacques is manipulating reality (or, closer to what he does in a1 too, is used by a tether by someone else who is manipulating reality)

bien once again forced to listen to The Analogies. i noticed a trend where people try to explain things to him using analogies and he just finds it more confusing than ever hes so autism coded

this lines here by media are rly interesting especially because medias relationship to bien has never been showed yet. we dont know how exactly bien was made (afaik it doesnt seem they know either because it was accidental but we dont know either if they found out eventually) so we dont know the extent of his demon powers esp since hes probably not a "real" demon or at least not a "pure" one

in the main timeline he obviously has his powers so i wonder if media is just wrong int thinking bien has no powers or if he rly just never had them in this timeline. my personal theory is that (main)biens powers awokened as a teenager (or whenever it was bon started having problems with him) maybe triggered by him killing animals so much? just that since (alt)bien never got exiled his powers never awokened because hes never had/wanted to kill

demons need to get their powers by communicating with hell so that also means (main)bien does (idk yet if hell is meant to be a place, a state or things like that)

theres not a lot of bien and jacques interaction in either tl but tbf it always seemed like they get along nice enough? in main tl bien at least recognizes jacques for giving him bday gifts and doesnt have a want to kill him lol. in this tl jacques shows concern for bien in the tyam mv, the vibe i get so far is like that child who helplessly observes one of their parents get abused by the other and cant do anything abt it. so sad :(

from main biens wish this tl is basically the au where bon wasnt exiled so assuming all the other events before that point were the same, then the presence of bon and bien as me/ja's "children" rly had a strong effect for their relationship

this is biens 18th bday so this happened four years ago (since main!bien has been dead for four years) so bread essentially not only went to the alt timeline but did so in the past. the chronology in the story is homestuck-shenanigans style weird tho so im not going to look too deep into that

once again media here listens to jacques instead of bien. that media seems to hold some regard for jacques despite abusing him so much in this timeline makes their relationship feel a lot more complicated than "just" abuse

i think bcuz i have a hard time grasping why media loves jacques so much in the main timeline its rly hard for me to gauge how media "really" feels abt jacques in any situation? medias clearly sadistic and in the main tl its implied hes embarrassed of himself bcuz he doesnt want to actually kill jacques, although its vaguely implied that his resistant may not necessarily be out of an empathetic concern for jacques, but that if jacques dies then..... well hed be jacquesless lmao.

i think in the alt timeline we already saw media behead jacques so it feels like to me this is a tl where jacques cant die and so media has no reason to resist hurting him so much.

i do think media enjoys both harming jacques AND spending time with him in normal loveydovey ways though, so even int he alt timeline he has his usual "simps for the hj"personality that he has in the main

this hasnt been stated in the comic yet, only in one of the scattered posts i think, but i think its confirmed that media is so sadistic specifically because he loves the "caretaker" role and wants others to be as helpless and unable to be independent as possible, so it makes sense for him to simultaneously love coddling jacques and want him to get hurt to the point of utter dependence (jacques "stupidity" is most likely medias fault)

OKAY GOING IN BOIZ

This is a silly rant and im putting multiple suggestions for each cuz idgaf so feel free to chime in with ur favs

1 - Racules actually i think should be one of the only ones to keep -star to befit his grandiose nature. Otherwise i think Swiftheart or Hawkheart - swift bcuz hasties haha and it invokes fleet footed legendary heroes + heart because awww hes such a good hearted benevolent ruler. Hawk also invokes epic bird of prey but also hawks as in warhawk. Raw it kinda sucks cuz racules-star doesnt flow well darn s ending name

2 - HIS EVILSONA: Girafang!! Evil! Bite the hand that feeds you!!!

Full evil name: Foxfang!! Gotta be a predator of cats (in wc world) because becoming what ppl fear. And the alliteration kinda matches some of how theyve been translating it. Foxes are normally a lil too tricksy but in wc-world theyre more ferocious/straightforward. Also play on the foxheart insult

Honorable mention to tigerfang because its very grandiose much like declaring oneself king and it does harken to the og villain tigerclaw. Im open to suggestions here as foxfang is scrappier while tigerfang is more forceful. Ig we havent seen enough of his revolution tm in action to truly judge

Full/alt non evilsona name: hear me out: Dovepelt. A very simple unassuming suffix for a peasant, but to me pelt also makes me think of like a literal pelt, to like cover others with. Putting your skin on the line etc also. Dove because aww all he really wants is peace :). And flocks of em yknow and bonus mourning dove/bleeding heart dove fun

3 - Yanmapaw the man who started it all. Obviously he needs a really quirky lategame firestar style name as the most progressive nation. I’m feeling Waveflash. Like a tidal wave standing high and unwilling to break, flash for his flashy nature and invokes technology and dragonfly wingbeats yknow. Wavebeat is also tempting but i think its a lil too tech heavy i think. This maybjust be me but water and its bonds flows stronger together to me. Also thus far we are keeping the colors kind of. Im so good at this

4 - Himeno ran. we need a multi-syllable princess-y name here. I kind of like Daffodilshine? Feels fancy and flower = medicine cat. Shine bcuz of her pride as the center of attention yknow. Rosestrike i think is cute too, fsncy flower and strike for her striking appearance/pride/haha her sword. I feel like sun could go somewhere but shine is prettier and how can i steal sun from tendoy. Byt cnsider Sunblossom

Okay now it starts getting a bit harder since weve seen less so im pulling from the bios ive seen around

5 - Kaguragi.

Seems a wise ruler and light-hearted, but has a duplicitous heart allegedly. God im trying so hard not to do another bird one but sorry i love birds. Magpiefur? Skydapple? Cloudwillow? Shadefeather? Magpie self explanatory. Sky and cloud both lofty and yay blue sky but can turn stormy. Fur and feather are both more luxurious suffixes to me. Sky and cloud also kinda relate to his farming deal thing. Magpies are loud and tricksters. I kinda want Badger smthn for a lot of reasons but i think its a little too aggressive in warrior cat world

6 - Rita.

Okay we gotta go hardcore here. Im temtped by mountain but it diesnt quite do it for me. Froststark. Blizzardstone. Icy, unyielding. I almost want hammer for hammer of justice given their alleged vicious justice and arguably cats could know hammer as a verb. Frostchain is also epic.

this goes without saying but. marth! mist is a very close second because i love drawing curly hair and stocky body types and that's both headcannons shoved on one character lmao. not that i don't do that to most characters i draw, but yea :)

i have a Lot of metal and rock/alt rock in my usual mix, but i've been getting more into jpop recently, so there's a couple artists in there i really like for chiller vibes (chelmico, polkadot stingray, utada hikaru's discography, etc etc.)

my biggest secret is that i draw 95% of everything i've ever posted traditional. i take a pic of the sketch and line over it in the csp mobile app aaaa 👊😔

SKETCHING sketching for sure. i have no idea how to color are you kidding. sometimes its therapeutic tho

thought i’d write down some interesting answers from the cast (there were many more, but i have a bad memory and i took only a few notes)

first of all, before the panels even started the staff told us not to ask questions about season four, we know they are filming it, but they can’t talk about it. so yeah, our hopes and dreams of an announcement or besse making a surprise appearance (🤡) didn’t come true. they never talked about it, when you mentioned it to them they raised their hands or zipped their mouths or were like “idk what u’re talking about 👀😇😬” so obviously they contractually have to keep their mouths shut. but it’s happening y’all!

the only one who slipped, at the very last panel, was rocco and i was the culprit lol. i asked them if they’d imagined the fandom would support them and fight so hard during the cancellation months and bea said no, seeing our hashtags trending almost every day and receiving so much love was touching and incredible. she made rocco talk (mentioned how “he became saint rocco”) and rocco also said he couldn’t imagine the amount of support, and that “the power is all in your hands, and it was worth it-“ and then realized he spoke too much dhshdhfvk the others side-eyed him and he was like “ops” but we all laughed and moved on.

pietro had a lgbtq+ themed panel with an italian youtuber called shanti. they talked a lot about representation, how it changed for the better in the last 20 years or so, how for example right now there’s attention being given to trans* storylines too, and pietro made some really good points about how a show like skam italia should give hope and a positive representation to a young audience, without unnecessary violence or struggles inserted just for tragedy’s sake. how it may seem that martino lives an “easy” and relatively painless experience coming out and being gay, at least in his season, but young queer people should hope and know that that’s possible for them too. he said that he and filippo are different, and it’s good and precious that they are. we don’t know if filippo is an activist, like pietro is, but sometimes sharing one’s personal experience is enough to help. even if filo is not shown as an activist, he is so aware of his identity, he shares his own experience and point of view with marti and it gives marti courage. and that’s enough. finally, i asked what his favorite lgbtq+ tv shows are and he said queer as folk (he realized he was gay thanks to qaf), he absolutely loved euphoria, and thinks sense8 is a masterpiece (but he didn’t finish it smh). he said elite is just cute (😤) and he also told another fan he finished and loved fleabag!!

i also asked pietro what he, besse, rocco and fede were doing in the carrefour parking lot that night in august and he said that supermarket is open 24h and close to his house and he had to go buy groceries so he caught two birds with one stone, called them up and they drank and ate tramezzini (cold sandwiches, besse got a burrito he said) in the parking lot... and yes, they were organizing the revolution.

fede said what he likes the most about martino is his devotion to the people he loves. what he doesn’t like is how sometimes he shuts out the rest of the world, but it’s a problem he has learned to solve.

rocco said he’s thankful that skam italia has given him more awareness on some topics he used to treat superficially. he also talked about how much he relied on ludo and his research to portray bpd respectfully, and he’s glad that people found themselves represented in nico and that he could help them. it’s the greatest compliment. his eyes shine when he talks about nico, he loves his character so much.

a fan asked what was their favorite line to say. rocco’s is “non è figo il mio tipo?”, greta’s is “gli dei sono immortali”, nicholas’s is “sei frocio?”, pietro’s is “l’acqua solo se mi prende fuoco camera” from season 3, fede said “does it have to be my line? cause i like no zì sbagliato” but for his own it’s “minuto per minuto”. i can’t remember bea’s 😭

greta said the girls tend to stick to the script a lot more than the boys, she said ludovico tersigni literally never says a line how it’s written. nicholas confirmed that the boys (contrabbandieri) tend to improvise more and use the script sort of as a base, and that they piss besse off because he says it looks like they go on set just to goof around and gossip and not to do their jobs lol

i asked nicholas if they ate luchino’s pizza crusts. he said he had like 7 kilos of them because they had to retake that scene many many times, cause they wouldn’t stop laughing, as we can see in the bloopers (he also said it was the most fun scene to shoot) and bessegato would just keep adding mustard, ketchup and mayo on them. he felt sick the day after and “tasted mustard for a week”. fyi, nicholas and luchino are literally the same person. there’s no line between the character and the person, i love him so much. he also said he was having the time of his life in bracciano, with the light summer breeze, while the others were dying in their clothes and blankets.

marti’s spirit animal is the fox, fede’s is a golden retriever (debatable but okay). i think rocco said a cat, greta said besse once told her silvia is a goldfish, bea feels like a tiger but thinks sana is an eagle and i didn’t get the rest cause it was all very confusing lol

federico’s panel on sunday was actually very interesting, he is actually quite eloquent and deep when he wants to. he talked about how he really took the “minuto per minuto” philosophy to heart. how he doesn’t set long-term goals for himself, because he wants the freedom to change. how he chose to study medicine because after high school he knew he wanted to keep studying, and a bit like acting, there’s a fundamental human aspect to it that he’s always been interested in.

a fan reminded him it was marti and nico’s anniversary and he said “how are they celebrating? patatine e marmellata or sushi? in nicco’s new house? have our heroes moved there?” and we were all like Bitch u tell us... ofc he didn’t. but he said he imagines marti and nico celebrating their anniversary at a sushi restaurant in porto fluviale, in ostiense (rome). also, fede says their anniversary is bracciano (dec 1st) and rocco says it’s nel mio letto (nov 1st), i’m afraid we have to go with fede on this one.

i think the best question out of every panel was about marti’s interest in gio: was it real, or was it just a fixation? he said it was real interest, that stayed over the summer too. he and ludo had to find a way to show the shift in martino, and it was hard because they switched seasons and so there was no time for it to be gradually shown. however, where they imagined that shift to happen, is in ep1 when gio sleeps in marti’s bed. marti feels uneasy because of his feelings for him, but at the same time, he is uneasy because of the guilt. when he talks with eva on the phone and sees how giovanni reacts to that, how he’s still so clearly into her, he decides he has to move on from him, and gives up any hope or idea to have a relationship with him.

at rocco and fede’s sunday panel, rocco said he admires federico’s dedication to his work and his professionalism. fede and him bantered and bickered a lot, it was adorable, especially when rocco said some nonsense metaphor and fede was like “basta!” and fede kept asking for more compliments. but the question was about what marti and nico liked the most about each other, and federico said “it’s the kind of love where you like someone so much and you don’t even know why” as in, because you like everything about them, so that was beautiful.

a fan asked if there was any embarrassment between them, they said of course initially there was a lil bit of awkwardness, but they warmed up to each other immediately. one of the very first scenes they shot was an intimate one, rocco said the first kiss they shot was nel mio letto and they’d never rehearsed kissing before. amazing.

fede’s favorite color is blue (nicholas’ too).

rocco and nicholas sat in the crowd at the end of fede’s panel and rocco was like “tell us the story of bambi” and fede called him “er lucertola” and said it all started because of a tossico (junkie/drunk), i love them. nicholas made fun of him for his role in “i cesaroni” but fede said he’s only jealous cause they auditioned for the same role but fede got it, and nicholas has him saved as “andy dei cesaroni” in his phone. 

some anecdotes from other moments (m&g, dinners) i found on twitter: federico said when they shot la grotta, there was this whole solemn atmosphere, and then he broke it cause when they finished shooting he realized he had rocco’s snot on his face and he was like “MA CHE CAZZO È, CHE SCHIFO (what the fuck, gross)” and said rocco was always crying on him (i guess referring to the martino e niccolò clip) and rocco was like yes there was a significant exchange of bodily fluids. okay rocchì.

apparently fede likes his beard so much he said he doesn’t recognize himself without it. 

some fans adopted two giraffes in the bioparco di roma in their name as a gift!

rocco cried on the phone with bessegato when skam italia was cancelled. we been knew but it hurts to get the confirmation.

maxence and lukas are two rays of sunshine. not an anecdote, but i felt like saying it.

last but not least, rocco, nicholas and fede went absolutely batshit over @crazybee‘s “alt er besse” shirt. their reactions were priceless. rocco and nicholas took pics of them, nicholas was the one who sent them to besse and he reposted it on ig. forever blessed.

giflinsky’s gif tutorial

ok so !! before i start, a disclaimer: i do not claim to be a professional at photoshop or know how to do everything omg i know there are multiple ways to make gifs, but this is just how i personally learned how to make gifs from a mix of tutorials that i’ve found over the years

now onto the tutorial !! i’m gonna be gif’ing my baby ofc & here’s the end product

step 1: pick the video you wanna gif

usually i get my videos from youtube or instagram, especially since i mostly gif jack gilinsky & insta is where i get like 90% of his content from lol. for this tutorial, i’m gonna gif jack & jack’s day dreaming music video ok cool

i use keepvid to download youtube videos, making sure to get the highest quality available ( 720p — 1080p ) & that the format is mp4 

step 2: opening in photoshop

so i currently use photoshop cc, but i’ve used photoshop cs5 & photoshop cs6 to gif in the past. tbh i can’t remember the differences so i’m pretty sure the process is the same?? if not lmk

anyway so to import the video, go to file > import > video frames to layers 

upload your video & this thing will pop up

depending on the length of the video & what scene you wanna gif, you can either click from beginning to end or selected range only. if the video is 10 seconds or shorter i usually pick the 1st option, but since this is a whole music video & i only wanna gif one tiny part of it, i chose the 2nd option. either way, check the box for limit to every 2 frames (tbh i’m not sure what happens if you change the number; every tutorial i read just said leave it at that lol)

to clip the video to the part you want, use those lil’ sliders. it doesn’t have to be exact bc you can delete frames later

once you click OK, the gif should open in photoshop. make sure the timeline is open at the bottom & if it’s not go to window > timeline

step 3: trimming the frames

so since i imported some extra scenes from the video, there are frames that i don’t want in the gif. all i have to do is select the unnecessary frames & click the lil’ trashcan at the bottom

this next step isn’t really required, but i found that it helps load things faster ig? so i select all the layers in the right sidebar by using the shortcut option + command + a (control + alt + a on windows) then i press command + g (control + g) to group them together

then i click the 3 stacked lines button & flatten frames into layers so that it’s only the frames that i want

then i delete the original group bc i don’t need them anymore

step 4: cropping

it’s just like cropping a regular image. it depends on the video (i.e. if it’s horizontal or vertical) & you can do whatever you like, there’s really no rules? for this gif, i used the 2:3 ratio to isolate gilinsky’s face

step 5: resizing

since the video size is pretty big, i have to resize it to fit tumblr’s guidelines. these are the photoset sizes for 2019 for reference

i usually make my gifs a little bit bigger, for example i size up 268px to 300px. i don’t really have a reason lol i just prefer things a little bigger i guess? anyway so to resize, go to image > image size or the keyboard shortcut option + command + i (control + alt + i)

i made the width 245 pixels & it automatically set the height 

step 6: sharpening

this step is optional, but i’ve found that it can make a difference in quality a lot of times. i use this sharpening action. in order to use it, you’ll have to load it onto photoshop, so click the play button thing on the right sidebar or go to window > actions 

click the 3 stacked lines, go to load actions, then select the sharpening action i linked

once it’s loaded, make sure the 1st frame in both the timeline & layers are selected, then click play selection on the action bar & it will work its sharpening magic 

step 7: gif speed

after you sharpen the gif, all the frames should be highlighted/selected. click the drop down arrow next to 0.06 on any of the frames & some numbers should pop up

these are the options for how fast you want your gif to be. i usually use 0.08 seconds for gifs with more frames, but 0.1 seconds is a good general speed for most gifs

oh and make sure that drop down is set to forever, which loops the gif

step 9: coloring

this step is also optional. it’s really for aesthetic purpose, especially if the color isn’t to your liking

i’m not creative enough to make my own colorings lol so i usually use one of these PSDs to color my gifs. for this particular gif, however, i used this one. you can find a bunch of other PSDs just searching through the tumblr tags

i just open the file onto photoshop, drag the group over to my gif & it makes it pretty?

step 8: saving

your gif is made! now all you gotta do is save & you’ll be able to use it however you please. go to file > export > save for web

there will be another pop up window. these are the settings i have (based on the tutorials i’ve read). colors should be 256, but you can mess around with the selective and/or diffusion to see how your gif looks

the last thing to check is the gif size. i believe the maximum for tumblr is 3.00M? any larger & the gif will freeze

i wont compare these much to the renewal versions but i will say.. the renewals do look better <3 i do like the outfits for the most part!! the summer miku going for swimwear is actually cute i think it's a cute outfit & I usually hate swimsuit figs but this one might get a pass. winter is cute but shes angled down too much + autumn i dont care for really her waist is super skinny though and shes angled/twisted weird.. i have nothing bad to say about the spring one <3

i give this a 6/10 (6.25/10, highest ranking is spring + lowest is autumn)

tbh i dont rly identify as trans, just nb, bc ive always felt nonbinary; used to b rly grossed out by being called anything masculine, felt uncomfortable to take my shirt off from the age of like 6, in public spaces. called myself an individualso like im definitely not cis but i’ve always been nonbinary, so i dont feel the need to categorize myself into like “someone who isn’t as they used to be” if that makes sense. 

plus idk, uncomfy term for me specifically, doesn’t feel right. same w transfeminine, like im androgynous in the first place, and if i were feminine, i dont see the need 2 arbitrarily add trans in front of it, as if to say “im artificial”obvs those terms r affirming for others, and im rly happy abt that and encourage them to use em, but for me its just like. mmm. thats how it feels, a lil nasty nd not me. wrong, ig? feelings. its 1 am almost so im in a slightly off mindset, but also fine bc i just took like a big nap from 3:30ish to 8no gender roles, im free of constriction and can dress however tf i want bc fuck fashion trends? its just money in the pocket of a corporation. now i do like fashion, but only in that i love to see how ppl express themselves, not so much following trends and rules abt it. it’s better to b unique and have ur own style, what makes u u, what makes u comfy and happily expressed

okay, so each answer kind of exists in a separate universe. like if they ALL looked alike at the same time, it would be an Us kinda situation, and dude. that movie freaked me out. so we’re just gonna pretend that only one of them has a twin at a time.

awsten would be pumped. would love himself. be his own biggest fan. if they both existed in the same universe, my awsten would start a twitter or ig talking about being real awsten’s doppelganger and sometimes dye his hair the same color and recreate photos... and you know real awsten would get in on this and have him do like a whole twin photoshoot hahahaha. imagine the pranks they’d pull... 

people start to figure it out, and rock sound’s writing articles about “the other awsten knight” and alt press is doing interviews with him, and he’s just eating it up. (maybe he finds out about real awsten when somebody comes up to him all flustered and asks for a picture.)

but yeah them meeting is all positvitiy and excitement from both sides. big hug, laughing, smiling, lots of, “oh my god!” and selfies and stuff like that

i think it would genuinely freak otto out hahaha. like im picturing my otto walking into a restaurant with his parents, and maybe real otto is sitting in a booth with grace and my otto notices her hair from across the room (im picturing that light pink she had idk) and he thinks she’s pretty so he looks to see who she’s with and it’s... himself? and he kind of freezes staring at himself, and then grace sees him, and she gets this look on her face of just confusion and kind of unsettled panic, so real otto turns to see what she’s looking at, and then their eyes meet and it’s like DUN DUN DUNNNNNNNNN.

they all just pretend like nothing happened, but they both think about it for years and maybe have nightmares about it.

if mr. w met real geoff... he would go up to him, i think. “i’m sorry so to bother you, but this is just so peculiar-” and real geoff is like, “whoa! dude!” and they sit down together (after mr. w gets a cup of tea and buys his other self some coffee, of couse) and mr. w starts asking geoff all these questions. he’s fascinated by his rockstar life, and geoff is laughing when he finds out that mr. w is not only a teacher but an ENGLISH teacher, and they exchange contact information and keep in touch every once in a while. 

and YES, mr. w becomes a waterparks fan. they give him free passes to everything when they come to houston, and awsten is obsessed with having two geoffs in the room at once even though mr. w is so insanely different than ~his geoff.~ awsten always makes sure to get a picture with both geoffs at the same time, although there’s a silent agreement between everyone not to share the pictures on social media. they know mr. w would hate that kind of attention, so the photos stay private.

my jawn finds real jawn through an artist friend who’s on the photography side of things. real jawn’s doing a shoot for a show, and my jawn finds out about it ahead of time and decides to show up and check it out.

 some guy from the band comes out and is like, “yo, jawn!” and motions him over, so he hesitantly goes, and the guy is saying stuff to him like, “when did you change clothes? you’re supposed to be backstage right now. where’s your camera?” blah blah blah and then real jawn comes out and calls the guy and is like, “i’ve been looking for you!” and the singer guy is freaked af looking between them, and then real jawn leans around to see what’s going on and sees his twin and is like wtf......... and they quickly and awkwardly leave, and my jawn is left standing there like whoa, he looks just like me in real life too.

later real jawn comes back out and finds my jawn and is like, im so sorry about earlier i just got kind of spooked. and partway through talking, my jawn realizes that real jawn thinks he’s a demon or a ghost or a time traveler something, and my jawn just kind of rolls with it. he doesn’t seek real jawn out again after that.

real zakk and my zakk become best friends. they’re convinced they’re the product of an actual glitch in the matrix, and they hang out together as much as humanly possible. my zakk becomes new love’s biggest fan. they definitely have sex more than once.

my lucas HATES real lucas. HATES him. only because he’s afraid of the whole situation. and also he’s worried that because of real lucas’ job, real lucas is somehow both cooler and hotter than he is. it’s also kind of a window into, like, ‘if things had been okay, this could have been your life.’ not that he ever wanted to go into music stuff, but just like. it kind of shows him how far off his ideal future path he went when the thing happened with chance.

Fashion, pastel goth, and glams in Eorzea

When I returned to Balmung about a year and a half ago, I fantasia’d Etienne with a very specific sort of soft grunge / pastel goth look in mind. While the definition of pastel goth (much like ‘goth’ in general) is vague and not very agreed-upon. In the case of Etienne’s design philosophy, it is, at its core, an embracing of elegant, feminine lines and shapes with a heavier Victorian/gothic fashion sense, while embracing a spring and summer color pallet. I classify Etienne as a pastel goth just as much because of their attitude as much as their look. I do not consider pastel goth to be ‘goth lite’, as some might categorize it. Also, I’m more of the philosophy of creating an aesthetic rather than following one, if that makes sense. Since I can’t define what pieces turn up in the game and not everything I’d like Etienne to wear is available to them, it’ll never be exactly what I’d want or imagine. But I find that to be part of the fun and the challenge.

I was very flattered recently to receive a message asking for tips on what items dye well for a pastel goth aesthetic. I’d say the Heavensward gear is best for goth stuff in general, there are a lot of gems in the leveling gear, and people are moving away from that for the time being which will give you a more standout, if possibly quaint, look. I wouldn’t say there’s a particular color or dye that works better. I bought some of the pastel pink dye for my wedding and have used it on a few other items and found it quite satisfying, but you can get a good look out of everything if you follow through with your colors and it happens to be shades that work on your character. Even the ice blue and rose pink dyes you get in the early game could be put to good use in the right context.

Siince I realized I had a ton of things I wanted to say on the subject of glams, pastel goth and fashion, as well as wanting to use visual aids. Here’s some basic ideas and philosophies that help me dress Etienne in all their pastel goth glory. All of these things are purely my opinion, every single one of them, so feel free to disagree. Preferably far away from me. I’m only an amateur when it comes to fashion. I like it a lot but I have not taken a single class or cried over a dress form or anything like that. If I get something wrong, I hope you can at least get my gist.

1. The Character Creator, Hair, Makeup, And Other Considerations

Everyone’s got that POTD haircut these days, right? But I love it!

When it comes to character customization your mileage can vary by races. I won’t begin to tell you what looks good. Aside from retainers, I’ve heardly touched any of the character creators aside from mi’qote and elezen. I’m a little obsessive about trying to make sure that my characters don’t look like everyone else’s, and that’s something that’s only brought about by long-term experience in the game. Remember that shades look different between haircuts, and if you think a skin tone or hair color looks good in the character creator, you probably want it a shade or two darker. The swatches are liars and things IG tend to look more washed out than in the CC. This shade of lavender looks like pink in the swatch, lavender looks gray or silver, etc. You can waste a lot of time, and potentially gil or fantasia on experimenting with this, but I’d say 98% of the time I’ve gone back to redo a character’s look it was mostly rectified by darkening up my color choices. So you may want to simply pick what you like instinctively, and then go a shade or two darker. I happen to like to highlight with a lighter shade of the hair’s original color to give some illusion of depth and texture, but this doesn’t work with every hairdo. Paler eyes give an illusion of life and depth to characters, but wash out very easily in screenshots or may give a lack of distinction.  Lip color you can take a bit more risk on. Darker purples, reds, and even greens or blues depending on what you’re going for / your character’s skin color (the latter look great on gray and blue skin tones) look pretty awesome, and again, better to err on the darker side. A brown can be an excellent choice for a ‘neutral’ lip color that still provides a made-up, polished look.

Bright colors look best on warmer and/or darker skin tones, so if that’s part of your character, you’re in luck.

One of the best pieces of advice on creating a customizable character to RP was to simply make it and walk away, and return to it the next day. This requires a lot of patience, but I think the results speak for themselves. You may otherwise wind up playing your character and finding you dislike your choices - or you made some very basic mistake.

2. Building A Silhouette

Shh... I know this isn’t pastel.

Shape of an outfit is, in my opinion, just as important as the colors you choose. This, like many other aspects, has many factors out of your control as we cannot have items custom made and builds have little variation. It’s a video game, and frankly it’s not like most of us are getting our IRL clothes bespoke either. Just as much as you want to think about what colors you should be wearing (and if you’re a RPer like me, why your character might wear it) but if the lines look good. I tend to build an outfit around one specific, notable piece of gear. Usually it’s a coat or something like that, but it may also be a hat or boots. I take a look at the shape of the item and consider the overall silhouette of the outfit. The Thavnarian bolero is lop-sided and worn with pants beneath, as the bloodhempen casting robe.  The ‘real’ bottoms for these sets are pants. I’m not fond of the way that breaks up the great line at the waist of these items and makes things look a bit lumpy and uneven. I thought a skirt was a great way to rectify this, plus it adds an interesting motion when you’re moving.

Having a lot of really ornate pieces all together at once, as well as potentially your weapons, can create a busy shape which makes an outfit seem muddled. Your admirers won’t know what to focus on. An outfit should, much like the main character of a Shonen Jump series, have a design that is simple, recognizable, distinct and attractive in silhouette.

3. Colors and Dyeing

If there’s one thing I come to again and again, it’s that you shouldn’t wear all one color.

This warddrobe color guide infographic literally changed my outlook on fashion forever, and thus, my entire glam life, and I keep the rules at the bottom for ‘foolproof combinations’ in mind at all times. 

I tend to avoid traditional neutrals, if I must I’ll go with the various shades of gray that are somewhat underutilized IG. Cream yellow and bone white are ones I’ve used a bit on one of my mi’qo alts to great effect, but they are more yellow and ecru than just plain white. 

I don’t have a cap that shows it, but I used to have a glam that was mostly grays with salmon pink gloves and shoes that dyed so that just the socks were that color. Using pops of color this way are an opportunity to cheat and use colors that might not look great in large amounts, or are unflattering on your character for the most part.

Remember that the more colors you have, the more bright pops, the more risk you run of looking busy, or that you simply threw together colors you liked without further consideration. That being said, I tend to enjoy using color families. Most of the light colors have darker counterparts.

When you dye an outfit a light color, many of the details get changed slightly to their darker shades. You can then pull out those colors for other pieces of your outfit and match it up. I was delighted to find out, when I got this hat in a drop, that it bore similar colors to the coat I’d already dyed colibri pink. Just because something isn’t dyeable doesn’t mean it’s going to clash with everything you own. If you like a piece, hold onto it. You never know. This is less of a problem in SB, but... just don’t ask to see poor Neondemon, my fashion retainer. Even his beefy Roe arms can’t hold all of my collection.

Plum purple wound up dying half of the boots that actual bright purple, and half of them a deep purple that coordinated with the trim and the other darker elements of the coat. In any case - dark hat, dark gloves, light shoes with a darker trim, and a very bright coat.

I also think it’s important that your earrings, etc., match the other materials you’re wearing, and that the shape compliments the outfit as well. Don’t let your earrings work against an outfit.

Here we have the combination of light coat, light hat, dark gloves, dark pants and shoes. I loved the line of the Ala Mhigan jacket and its art noveau little hat, so I decided to keep it. Even though this is a set of tomestone gear that basically everyone has, I’ve received a lot of compliments for the choices I made in dyeing this pairing it with the overall look of my character. In spite of it being an ‘ordinary’ outfit with zero alterations, I absolutely loved wearing this and how Etienne looked in these color choices. I don’t think you have to break new ground with every outfit or find the most unique, rare pieces. It may not be realistic to spend your time on that. When you dye things in unusual colors, it brings out qualities others might not have noticed or appreciated about that item. The details on the Ala Mhigan casting set are so much more noticeable in this light color, and it looks very pleasant with the snowy white trim. In spite of doing very little to ‘develop’ this glam aside from deciding on the colors, it’s one of my favorites so far.

4. Take Risks, Get Feedback, Make Friends, And Have Fun

I’ve met so many awesome people because they complimented my look or my glam and I took a few minutes to chat with them about it. Complimenting others has gained me a lot of insight into different ideas, where gear comes from, how it dyes and how to pair it up with things. Allow yourself to be a work-in-progress. The one person you truly have to answer to when it comes to glams is yourself, so there’s no reason to worry to much about getting good.
