You have to tell us what perfumes you use!! Put us on! What’s wrong with le labo? I like the le labo rose 34 :(
A tough one to answer because I wear multiple perfumes a day and I'm almost always trying out samples, much to my family's displeasure. (I've been called a torture artist for making them smell some of the things I've worn!) But I try to mostly do sampling when I'm at home. Full bottles I own and wear when I'm out and about include but are not limited to:
Andy Tauer L'air du desert marocain - LOVE OF MY LIIIIFE! It smells like nothing else, simply one of the best dry ambers in existence. You must sample this if you like perfume at all.
Tauerville Rose Flash - my favourite rose scent (yes, even more than Portrait of a Lady!) A super jammy rose with a weird, funky citronella kind of base note. Projects like nothing else, I adore it.
Thierry Mugler Alien - one of the best designer perfumes of all time, one of the best jasmines of all time. I love her. I wear this to the grocery store lol
Guerlain Vetiver Extreme - I didn’t care for the OG Guerlain Vetiver, though it’s considered one of the best in the genre (and I adore vetiver as a note!) but this one I love, it’s super smoky and incense-y. Hard to find in Aus but great value for money.
Comme des Garcons Incense: Avignon - you spray this and a Gregorian chant starts playing. A beautiful, airy, completely unforgiving incense.
Prada Infusion d'Iris - A papery, dry iris. It uses the dry facets of iris, vetiver, incense, and a slug of iso e super (an aromachemical that smells like cedar/pencil shavings) to create an effect like the smell in a very clean library. One of my safe (for other people!) scents.
Wik & Co Marveilleux - a lipstick rose/iris from an aussie indie brand. Smells like a vintage style scent that’s been given a modern twist. The closest I get to a decadent floral.
Lalique Encre Noire/Encre Noire Extreme/Encre Noire Sport - my vetiver babieeeesssss. Encre Noire is one of the best vetivers ever made and probably the best soliflore for this note. Unfortunately, it only lasts about an hour on me so I spray it profusely. Extreme is deeper and a bit more powdery, Sport has some mineral notes in the top, both are also lovely.
Lush I'm Home/Rentless/What Would Love Do?/Lord of Misrule/Goddess - I love my little lush bottles!. I’m Home is a cosy vanilla/benzoin, Rentless is Christmas spices with a huge slug of patchouli, WWLD is a lavender/citrus, Lord of Misrule is a patch/vanilla/pepper situation, and Goddess is what has to be described as a brutal oud, paired with rose and osmanthus. All lovely, well priced, and more inventive than about 80% of the designer/niche market.
Serge Lutens Gris Clair - my fancy chemist lavender/hot ironing darling. Glorious.
Rania J Ambre Loup - gorgeous, cosy amber, with a lot of clove in the top notes. Not too powdery.
YSL M7 - one of the first western oud scents. Smells very medicinal, like cherry cough syrup - one of my faves.
Prada Candy Gloss  - another cherry scent, I’m obsessed with medicinal/clinical cherry notes (I often enjoy almond/heliotrope perfumes because they smell very similar to cherry!). What perfume people call a ‘dumb reach’ - lovely, crowd pleasing, unchallenging.
Molinard Habanita - powdery but in a good way. A vetiver-vanilla combo that is dominated by heliotrope (cherry-ish) and tobacco for me. Love the bottle.
Goldfield and Banks Wood Infusion - another aussie niche brand. A sticky oud and sandalwood, it projects like crazy. This one is addictive!
Guerlain Mitsouko - the chypre to end all chypres.
Ariana Grande Cloud - a Baccarat Rouge 540 dupe, the best BR540 dupe, a saffron/medicinal top that blooms into a warm gourmand base. I get compliments from strangers when I wear this one.
Escentric Molecules Escentric 01 - iso e super (aforementioned pencil shavings aromachemical) with a truly lovely pink pepper top note.
Gucci Guilty Absolute pour Homme - smells like bandaids. Smells like a muscle rub. The affect is created by a truly dark combination of vetiver, cypress, and patchouli. I adore it.
Agent Provocateur l’Agent - tuberose and incense, mainly myrrh. Very gothic, dramatic, seductress in silk dressing gown draped over a staircase.
Dior Homme - A masculine (citrus top, woody base) with an iris (lipstick smelling) heart note. It is heavenly.
Estee Lauder Youth Dew - my brother once called it, 'the sulfur of the damned'. Smells like Betty Draper mid existensial crisis. A coca coca oriental.
Tocca Guiletta - this is a breezy light floral that has almost nothing I like listed in the notes, and yet I love it? It lasts forever, i take it on holidays. (Man, remember holidays?)
Tom Ford Black Orchid - Had it for years, love it deeply. A chocolate-cucumber top accord with a decaying floral/incense base. Smells like a dying 1920′s starlet.
Tom Ford Grey Vetiver - a buttery vetiver accord in the style of Comme des Garcons Man 2.
Kyse Frollino Lavanda - a huge dose of essential oil-ish lavender on top of a salted butter/sugary base. It’s just gorgeous.
100bon Amaretto and Framboise/Carvi Jardin et Figue/Davana and Vanille Bourbon - these are all natural scents with surprisingly good longevity. The almond is a little boozy, the fig is very creamy, the davana a bit more fresh. I wear them in summer because they’re not cloying and they don’t give you a headache.
I have decants of Frederic Malle Portrait of a Lady/Musc Ravageur and Heeley Cardinal that I wear pretty often as well. And I have a sample of Ormonde Woman that I'm hoarding because I love it and I want a bottle very badly but it is spennnssssyyy ($230 for 50ml). My wishlist is equally as embarrassing.
As for Le Labo, that’s really just a petty me thing; I don’t like brands that overcharge for their product. Fact is, unless the scent includes really difficult to source (real oud), rare (Mysore sandalwood), or expensive (real orris butter, saffron) ingredients, there’s no reason why the scent should be sold at such a markup.
(I would probably never buy a full bottle of a Frederic Malle perfume either, though I love many of them and I like the brand a lot more than Le Labo, because they are similarly exorbitantly priced - mostly because of the ingredients.)
A lot of niche brands do markup (Byredo, Creed, ROJA DOVE) because they’re selling the aesthetic, and I don’t jive with that. I like a few Le Labo scents (Thé Noir 29, Vetiver 46, their oud is alright) and i would buy them if they were in the 100-150$ price range. I also like that they have an affordable in house sampling service. I don’t like how they name their perfumes after the most used ingredient, because I think it’s misleading (Santal 33 does not smell like sandalwood, it’s a violet leaf bomb, etc). Rose 31 I do hate though lmao. It smells like sour cumin to me.

Black Narcissus
“Black Narcissus” was a classic perfume for men and women produced by Ahmed Soliman in the 1920s. It was based on an oil extracted from flowering plants of the genus Narcissus (daffodils and jonquils) which still is used in perfumes and colognes today. The scent is said to have been dark, musky, sultry and erotic. So why is “Black Narcissus” also the title of a 1947 movie about missionary nuns in India?
You have to wait for it, but the perfume figures prominently in a key scene that relates to the budding sexual tensions within the austere religious community. But the discussion of “Black Narcissus” ends with a bluntly racist comment that also fits the film’s underlying themes.
First, it is important to understand that the nuns in question are Anglican, rather than Roman Catholic nuns. In fact, the movie was originally released only a few months before India declared its independence from British rule. The identification with a specific national church, and nationalistic form of Christianity, explains  the nuns’ confusion of the Gospel with British culture, and the taming of a “barbaric” people.
As a result of a political deal, the motherhouse in Calcutta receives property on which to establish a convent, school and clinic in a remote valley of the Himalayan Mountains. The rajah of the region has little interest in Christianity, but he wants to curry favor with the British and also wants his people to have the observable benefits of western European learning and technology, especially medicine.
So a team of sisters is dispatched to the location, led by Sister Clodagh (this was a breakthrough role for English movie star, Deborah Kerr). Yes, it’s also noteworthy that Sister Clodagh is Irish, unlike the others. It turns out that the property is a fortress on a sheer cliff overlooking the village in the valley below. The rajah’s father used it as a pleasure palace, where he housed his large harem. When the nuns move in, the walls are covered with pornographic paintings (what is shown of them is surprisingly explicit for a 1947 movie). That’s interesting, because it is also noted that some monks had previously tried to set up shop in the castle, but left after only five months. No further explanation of that matter is given.
This backstory hints at perhaps some supernatural influence at work in what happens to the nuns. All experience personal breakdowns of varying degrees of severity and their group bond begins to unravel. However, the viewer may interpret this simply as the psychological effects of immersion and isolation within a foreign culture, compounded by repressed sexuality.
It also is strongly suggested that life on the rugged, windswept mountain heightens the women’s five senses, and brings to the surface memories that they had buried beneath a comfortable routine of daily prayer and hard work. The audience only gets a glimpse of Sister Clodagh’s memories of a failed romance in Ireland. These flashbacks feature a radiant, fun-loving young woman in contrast to her severe appearance as a nun. Deborah Kerr, of course, looks gorgeous, even standing in the middle of a stream in flyfishing gear.
Then there’s the movie’s homme fatale, rather than femme fatale. Mr. Dean (David Farrar) is the “British agent” (the local ruler’s liaison with the imperial government). He is a handsome Englishman who has “gone native”. That means most of the time he wears only shorts and an open shirt (in one scene he rushes to the convent without even putting on a shirt). Mr. Dean doubts that the mission will succeed where others have not, and Sister Clodagh considers him “dissolute”. All conversations between them are charged with sexual innuendo.
In a plot twist, the old rajah dies and his son takes over. Unlike his father, the young rajah (Sabu) is sincerely interested in Jesus Christ and what He taught. The sisters fail to understand this. They also fail to pick up on his equally keen interest of another type in 17-year-old Kanchi (Jean Simmons). Kanchi is a, shall we say, precocious orphan that the nuns have taken in. She performs exotic dances when the nuns aren’t looking and otherwise conveys her mutual feelings toward the young rajah. The two elope and are then absent from the movie until the very end.
But there is some dialogue between the young rajah and Sister Clodagh that is worth examining. The sister is explaining to the rajah why the convent is only a spiritual retreat for women and not for men. The rajah points to a nearby crucifix and says, “But Jesus was a man”. Sister Clodagh replies that, “Jesus only took the form of a man.”
Which is not what the Bible and the ecumenical creeds say. The fourth Gospel, that of the Apostle John, probably was written specifically to refute the heresy of the Gnostics. Part of the false teaching of the Gnostics was that the material world, the world of our five senses, is evil. It was not created by God, the Father of Jesus Christ, but by an inferior deity.
The first chapter recaps the account of creation in Genesis, emphasizing how the Word (Logos, a designation of the Second Person of the Trinity) was with God in the beginning and was God. By this Word was everything made and for this Word everything was made. And then the Word “was made flesh and dwelled among us”. The Greek word translated “was made” signifies a change in the nature of something. In this case, what was divine became fully human, although it remained divine, and dwelled among humanity.
After John’s Gospel, the Council of Nicea in 325 AD would reject not only Arianism, the idea that Jesus was a created being inferior to God the Father, but also docetism, the teaching that the human form of Jesus was only a sort of illusion. Thus, the Nicene Creed says that Jesus “was incarnate by the Holy Ghost and of the Virgin Mary, and was made man; He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, and suffered, and was buried, and the third day He rose again, according to the Scriptures, and ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of the Father.” The story of the ascension shows that Jesus returned to the Father in both His human and divine natures, thus sanctifying forever our human nature.
The Athanasian Creed goes into even more detail. “For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess; that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God, of the substance of the Father; begotten before the worlds; and Man, of the substance of His Mother, born in the world. Perfect God; and perfect Man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. Equal to the Father, as touching His Godhead; and inferior to the Father as touching His Manhood. Who although He is God and Man; yet He is not two, but one Christ. One; not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh; but by assumption of the manhood into God. One altogether; not by confusion of substance; but by unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man; so God and Man is one Christ.”
So Sister Clodagh expresses at the very least, a deficient Christology. Jesus became incarnate that he might experience every human feeling and every human temptation; yet at the same time blessing common human experience. So the nuns see human desires and pleasures as a threat to spirituality to an exaggerated degree. They are all the more vulnerable to the sensuality of the natural and cultural environment in which they find themselves
Yet they are not entirely wrong, because in one case, the unleashing of passion raises something darker than Sister Clodagh’s regrets. Again, there is the suggestion of something like demonic possession, although it could be explained away as jealousy and emotional instability.
At any rate, Mr. Dean is not really the serpent in the garden, although what he considers an offhand remark sets a tragic event in motion. And a simple gesture by the most open and friendliest of the nuns is misunderstood and turns the villagers against the mission.
“Black Narcissus” is filmed in beautiful Technicolor and the scenery emphasizes the vastness of the mountains and the dream-like state that overwhelms the sisters.

Neroli Fragrances: An Expert Guide
http://fashion-trendin.com/neroli-fragrances-an-expert-guide/
Neroli Fragrances: An Expert Guide
A fragrance needn’t slap you (or your fellow commuters) in the face. Yes, you want to turn heads, but you want to do it for the right reasons. On a date, the aim should be to make your dining companion lean in for a closer sniff, not leave them feeling like they’ve just huffed glue for an hour and a half.
That’s where notes such as neroli come in. Sitting at the opposite end of the spectrum to dark, oriental scents like oud and vetiver that hang thickly in the air, neroli fragrances are fresh – delicate, even.
The oils, extracted from bitter orange blossoms, were first used by Marie Orsini, princess of Nerola, Italy, during the 17th century to scent her gloves and bath water. The note became so popular in the area that others began calling it neroli after its home and founder.
Granted, silk gloves may be a step too far for a man in the modern world (and no one should bath in a fragrance), but taking style tips from royalty is no bad thing. As a top note, neroli is incredibly versatile and, when deployed correctly, makes the ideal olfactory addition to your bathroom cabinet.
What Is Neroli?
Neroli is an essential oil extracted from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree, produced largely in two geographical regions: Tunisia and Morocco.
“It’s a real labour of love – the orange blossoms are often picked by hand in early spring,” says fragrance blogger Lee-Ann Hodgekins of The Perfume Expert. “It’s only then that the fragrant oil can be extracted by a process of steam distillation.”
Once distilled, neroli is multifaceted: crisp and citrusy, but with a heady floral side. Despite coming from the same plant, neroli is also typically fresher than its orange flower absolute counterpart, which tends to be sweeter.
“Neroli’s green and white floral facets present a […] refreshing odour profile that doesn’t feel heavy,” explains Thomas Dunckley, of the award-winning blog The Candy Perfume Boy. “But it’s also one that carries both complexity and depth.”
Neroli In Fragrance
In fragrances, neroli is traditionally used as part of an eau de cologne, a low-concentrated type of scent that can also be used on the face and body.
“It’s often used as a top or heart note and is quite volatile, so won’t stay on the skin for very long on its own,” says Emmanuelle Moeglin, a classically trained nose and founder of bespoke fragrance service the Experimental Perfume Club. “Therefore, it needs to be paired with stronger, more long-lasting ingredients within a composition.”
This makes it an ideal floral note for men’s cologne that is more measured than the full-blown bouquet that you’re likely to find in a female fragrance.
With all that knowledge on lock and your career as a nose now all but formalised – it’s time to find out the fragrance that best deserves its place in your wash bag.
Which Neroli To Choose?
Because of its perfect pairing with citrus, neroli is often used in clean and fresh, colognes.
“Colognes based around neroli are perfect for men who gravitate to those clean, sporty scents,” says Hodgekins. And, regardless of your tastes, neroli will be first in class as the ideal fragrance for summer due to its unending freshness.
But there are variations within this class of light and fresh scents. Whether you’re in the market for a fragrance that works as a daily dose or pre-date top-up, gym bag hero or holiday essential, here are some of the best options to splash (out) on.
Everyday Sporty Neroli
When Neroli is paired heavily with citrus it can give you that fresh-out-of-the-shower smell that you wish you could – and now can – take with you all day.
“Creed’s Neroli Sauvage combines pure neroli with a heavy dose of all thing’s citrus to create a fragrance that is zesty, fresh, and clean,” says Hodgekins. It’s this zest that makes it an ideal match for athletic men who enjoy the energising uplift it gives them.
Elsewhere, Le Labo Neroli 36 is a mixture of neroli with other citrus notes plus jasmine and rose that develops into a refreshingly clean, powdery fragrance. That’s the post-shower feel without the need for an old-fashioned cloud of talc, then. Which is a relief.
Summer Getaway Neroli
The most popular neroli fragrance on the market right now is Tom Ford’s unisex fragrance, Neroli Portofino. “It is the classic combination of delicate neroli with zesty citrus fruits, but also includes green herbs like rosemary and myrtle, and ends with a smooth amber,” says Hodgekins. Which, in non-nose speak, means that Neroli Portofino is arguably the perfect summer holiday scent, best enjoyed on a Mediterranean veranda.
For the more adventurous there is Basil & Neroli by Jo Malone London. “It’s a big, juicy and green fragrance, all steamy and hot like a rainforest, created by the clash of vibrant, floral neroli and savoury basil,” says Dunckley. “It’s a trek through the Amazon in a bottle.” Just with fewer spiders.
Sophisticated & Romantic
Neroli does transfer across from daytime sport and sun, you just need to know where to look. Neroli Outrenoir by Guerlain sees the golden note of neroli paired with a base of black tea. “The result is a suave, sophisticated neroli that smells great paired with black tie,” says Dunckley.
Likewise, Eau de Neroli Dore by Hermes is one of the more unusual neroli fragrances that suits after hours. “It is an interplay of neroli and bitter orange, with a clash of saffron,” says Dunckley. “It has an elegance that speaks of that refined quirkiness which Hermes is famous for.” Two sprays to come across as refined and quirky? We’ll take that.

Look what’s just launched!
Here at The Perfume Society, we are all about helping you find a new scent love. From our sample-filled Discovery Boxes to our weekly round ups of which of latest launches we are love, love, loving, we’re here to help you learn and discover more about fragrance. This week we have been continuously spritzing these five scents around the office – and we can definitely confirm that they are a must try! Pack your blotters – and head for the counter.
ATELIER COLOGNE IRIS REBELLE Known as ‘blue gold’, iris has become perfumery’s priciest ingredient – at the launch of Iris Rebelle, Atelier Cologne co-founder Sylvie Ganter explained that the oil now sells for $120,000 a kilo. Iris can go very ‘girly’ – but here, in a stunning creation inspired by backstage at the ballet, its suede-like and almost earthy qualities are pronounced, dancing alongside black pepper, orange flower, bergamot, lavender and rose, with patchouli, guaiac and white musk taking the curtain call. From £65 for 30ml Cologne absolu ateliercologne.com
CREED LOVE IN WHITE SUMMER It’s difficult to improve on a classic, but Creed have managed it by weaving luminous, dewy rose petals and iris so airy – as though just-applied with a swansdown puff, motes of powder still dancing and twinkling in sunbeams – to create a sun-kissed, shade-dappled scent that will breeze you through summer. A limited edition, this, and surely a must-have for any brides considering what to pair with their romantic yet contemporarily chic gowns… £180 for 75ml eau de toilette creedfragrances.co.uk
JUICY COUTURE VIVA LA JUICY SOIRÉE Soirée is an invitation to a masked ball, beckoning us to throw on our best feathers, rhinestones and bikini (and whatever you do, don’t forget the glitter). Never letting us down, the bottle sets the scene, it pink fur, splashes of paint and gold emblems perfectly evoking feminine gloss and tanned sunsets. Imagine sparkling mandarin, two types of jasmine, waterlily and sultry amber tones, confidently and unapologetically swirling in this exuberant summer night’s scent. From £39 for 30ml eau de parfum theperfumeshop.com
FLORIS 1927 The latest addition to Floris‘s Fragrance Journals – each evoking a particularly iconic year – 1927 kicks off with a swing as aldehydes burst like champagne bubbles into bergamot, and we can almost hear the giggles as cocktails are carried to the drawing room. Bright Young Things in barely-there bias-cut silks swing their pearls, violet, ylang ylang, narcissus and mimosa sashay their way to dancing on the tables – and an oakmoss-like, vanilla-musk base adds to sophisticated high-jinks. £140 for 100ml eau de parfum florislondon.com
PAUL SMITH HELLO YOU! Inspired by Paul Smith celebrated use of colour, revered perfumers Dominique Ropion and his rapidly rising star apprentice Fanny Bal have created a scent equally as bold and bright as the designer’s renowned stripes. Aromatic lavender is sprinkled over apple, coriander and yellow mandarin, with strong base notes of vetiver and patchouli given a sensual touch with cistus absolute. And the bottle? Smartly dressed in Mr. Smith’s iconic stripes, of course. £35 for 50ml eau de toilette theperfumeshop.com
