#love this murder family of women getting revenge in anguish for their loved ones they will never get back
Text
in middle school during my Intense Greek Mythology Phase, Artemis was, as you can likely guess, my best girl. Iphigenia was my OTHER best girl. Yes at the same time.
The story of Iphigenia always gets to me when it's not presented as a story of Artemis being capricious and having arbitrary rules about where you can and can't hunt, but instead, making a point about war.
Artemis was, among other things--patron of hunting, wild places, the moon, singlehood--the protector of young girls. That's a really important aspect she was worshipped as: she protected girls and young women. But she was the one who demanded Agamemnon sacrifice his daughter in order for his fleet to be able to sail on for Troy.
There's no contradiction, though, when it's framed as, Artemis making Agamemnon face what he’s doing to the women and children of Troy. His children are not in danger. His son will not be thrown off the ramparts, his daughters will not be taken captive as sex slaves and dragged off to foreign lands, his wife will not have to watch her husband and brothers and children killed. Yet this is what he’s sailing off to Troy to inevitably do. That’s what happens in war. He’s going to go kill other people’s daughters; can he stand to do that to his own? As long as the answer is no—he can kill other people’s children, but not his own—he can’t sail off to war.
Which casts Artemis is a fascinating light, compared to the other gods of the Trojan War. The Trojan War is really a squabble of pride and insults within the Olympian family; Eris decided to cause problems on purpose, leaving Aphrodite smug and Hera and Athena snubbed, and all of this was kinda Zeus’s fault in the first place for not being able to keep it in his pants. And out of this fight mortal men were their game pieces and mortal cities their prizes in restoring their pride. And if hundreds of people die and hundred more lives are ruined, well, that’s what happens when gods fight. Mortals pay the price for gods’ whims and the gods move on in time and the mortals don’t and that’s how it is.
And women especially—Zeus wanted Leda, so he took her. Paris wanted Helen, so he took her. There’s a reason “the Trojan women” even since ancient times were the emblems of victims of a war they never wanted, never asked for, and never had a say in choosing, but was brought down on their heads anyway.
Artemis, in the way of gods, is still acting through human proxies. But it seems notable to me to cast her as the one god to look at the destruction the war is about to wreak on people, and challenge Agamemnon: are you ready to kill innocents? Kill children? Destroy families, leave grieving wives and mothers? Are you? Prove it.
It reminds me of that idea about nuclear codes, the concept of implanting the key in the heart of one of the Oval Office staffers who holds the briefcase, so the president would have to stab a man with a knife to get the key to launch the nukes. “That’s horrible!,” it’s said the response was. “If he had to do that, he might never press the button!” And it’s interesting to see Artemis offering Agamemnon the same choice. You want to burn Troy? Kill your own daughter first. Show me you understand what it means that you’re about to do.

Thanks to my two brain cells again for made synapsis, I don’t know what I’do without you gurls. Thanks to the Microsoft Translate for translating some things I couldn’t translate.
And agaaaain the same apology HAHA I'm sorry if I make some grammatical, spelling or writing mistakes, english is not my native language, is other,  blablablablablaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
Hope you like it! Wait for the Part 2! 😉
 ...
You woke up one morning, in the middle of some soft white sheets, the sunlight had come in through the window, causing you to open your eyes. You looked next to you, and there he was, ruining those white sheets with his green hair and his damaged clown makeup.
Yes, you are the Clown Prince of Crime dear lover.
Stretching out your arms, you looked at his face sleep peacefully. How could someone who committed crimes, murders and attacks look so angelic?
You kissed his forehead, got up carefully from bed so you wouldn't make any noise, looking for your underwear.
The night before, the assault he had planned for months had been so successful, there was so much emotion and energy in his body that he had to discharge it on you. And you didn't refuse it.
In a light dress, you walked out of the room, letting Arthur rest. Breakfast should be first, but you'd rather have a glass of cognac and a cigarette first. Looking out the window, drinking from the glass liquor, you thought all that comes with being the most wanted criminal in Gotham City. Sometimes it was anguish, anger and revenge. Other times it was successful.
Your toughts reminds you your past, your sad past.
The night when you and Joker met, something that could be dangerous, but him it was your only way out.
You lived in an environment you knew perfectly well you could die any moment, working in a stripclub. Drugs, alcohol, dirty money, criminals, something of every day for you. You didn't think much about your situation, you were just trying to survive.
You hated your job, but you didn't get another chance. Family that could help you? Don’t think so, your closed-minded family was so disappointed in you for a lot of things, but trying to starting to discover your sexuality was what it drove them crazy, throwing you out of your own home. You tried to get ahead and a friend offered you his help, but he spat in your face and cheating in your face too, you fell into that brothel was the worst thing could happen to you, and you just wanted to find a damned exit.
But you were under threat, your boss wanted you to work for him until your body will stop being young. Your friend made fun of you, he was looking for “employees” for his boss, and you fell straight into his trap.
Every time you went to sleep you cried, waiting for something to happen, anything that will get you out of there.
Amd a magical night, your daily request before sleep came true.
That night you worked like any other, dancing with the neon lights and aesthetic wigs, feeling worthless. Your dancing turn was over, and as you came down from the table you observe the bodyguards very nervous.
“Shit, the clowns are coming, this gonna be a fucking mess”
Clowns? You thought What the fuck did they mean by clowns?
You looked at it yourself when they arrived.
It was the most feared crime clan in town. Everyone inside the club thought about leaving the place, but it was too late. Once the clowns came in, no one could get out anymore. Every clown was screaming, asking for attention and service immediately.
They were revolting and of course they were dangerous.
Although to be honest, you were already used to dealing with dangerous people.
They leader would be just like them? Or worst? Probably, and you didn’t want to check it out for yourself.
But the moment when you saw him walk through that door, walking gracefully and arrogantly, with one of his hands in his pocket and the other holding a cigarette, his green hair falling on his shoulders, and the clown makeup in his face.
You recognized him, that famous criminal that everyone in the city talked about, even your “coworkers” while they dressed and makeup before giving another show. You can’t catch your breath; your mind gets a twist. Everyone was afraid of him, and you were no exception. But at the same time, he attracted you from the moment you saw him.
You bite your lips, you wanted to be with him, at least that night. You really wanted so bad, but all of a sudden you got discouraged. You knew there were prettier women, with better bodies, and well, with more experience than you.
Feeling sad and looked down, you decided to get on with your business, which was to hand out the drinks. You could see the women dancing for the clowns and they weren't fools, they enjoyed the show.
You'd come to the tables with the tray full of beers, the clowns didn't even notice your presence. Your coworkes were like goddesses next to you, you were a simple angel.
But there was something strange, none of the women danced for the leader.
He was sitting, crossing his legs, resting on his elbows and interlacing his fingers. Does everyone really be so afraid of him? No one had come to him to give him a simple dance, they hadn't even offered him a drink. It even seemed that he was being forced to be there, which might perhaps be true, or maybe his men did something so good (or something so bad for others) that day, so he decided to "reward" them.
You could have done what everyone else dig, you could get on with your job, wait for the clowns to leave and everything would go back to "normal." But instead, you decided something else.
"Any drink for the Clown Prince of Crime?" You'd heard that bad men liked to be called by the nicknames that the press or the police put to them.
He, without turning his head, placed his eyes upon you, looking from head to toe.
Oh, shit. You thought. Maybe that’s wasn’t a good idea
“You're the first woman to come up to me without fear of me”
“Well, it’s part of my job be helpful to all customers” With a shy smile and lovely voice, you left a neer in his table. He kept seeing you.
“Oh, I see… I see you’re a sweet bunny” You blushed, and he notice that. With an ironic laugh, the prince clown smokes, that put a smile in your face “What’s your name, doll?
Confused, you doubted whether to tell him the truth, because tell your real name to the clients are totally forbidden in the “job”.
“Oh, it’s belladonna” You responded, hoping that would satisfy his curiosity. But you knew better than anyone that when a "client" was infatuated with one of the girls, he was going to do his best to have that girl for him.
“Belladonna, like the poison flower? Pretty, really pretty nickname, but I want to know your real name”
And to be honest, you wanted the clown to be infatuated with you that night.
“y/n…” You whispered. The arrogant clown started playing with the purple hairs that stroked your arms.
“y/n, hmm… Nice hair, beauty color”
“It’s a wig, but thank you”
“I know darling…” Stopping playing with the lock of fake hair, he saw you again, with a disturbingly attractive look “You know who I am?”
He expected an answer, and you were afraid to answer it correctly.
But why did he do that? What did he win for that?
“You’re the Joker… Right?”
A huge laugh was heard in the place, the bodyguards noticed, they thought you’d be fucked. And maybe they were right, but not in the way they thought it would happen.
“Smart girl, smart girl… Let’s go to one of the rooms, I want to… Talk more with you…”
His devilish smile bewitched you.
Yes! You going to pass the night with him. You’d finally spend the night with someone you really wanted.
Taking his hand, you two walked to one of the luxurious rooms, and you noticed how some clowns turned around surprised, it seemed unusual for the clown prince to ask to be with some harlot.
Once inside, you threw Joker into bed, and you were about to undress.
“Hey, stop”
Suddenly you stopped, confused.
“Huh?”
“I said I want to talk with you, I don’t want to fuck you”
Blushing, you felt so silly, so embarrassed, at least the short dress hadn’t fallen to the floor.
When he noticed your shame, he started laughing again. Was he making fun of you? Maybe he had de right to humiliated you.
Putting the straps back on, you put your hands in your back, looking at the floor.
“You’re not a woman of this place”
“W-what?”
You asked more confused, Joker was just watching you, watching how you behave  when you were around him.
“Any other whore would have insulted me and said “Don’t waste my time” and left me alone here. You act only like a confused and scared girl. You don’t belong here, y/n, you don’t belong here”
His deep voice made you tremble.
Maybe he was right, but he didn’t know the fact that it was the first time you wanted to be with a man in a long time, and he was the lucky one.
“You’re not here cause you want to, or am I wrong?”
You didn’t have the courage to answer him with the truth, but surely your face ratted you out.
You found out for his next question.
“C’mon, tell me y/n, what kind of woman like you doing in a place like this?”
He crossed his legs again, ready to listen you.
You weren’t sure about that, why he wants you hear that from you?
“I-I didn’t really have many options after my family kicked me out of my house. A friend told me about being a waitress, but was a lie… And I-I got caught with more lies and now… I’m here”
It was so embarrassing that you didn’t even want to see him. He’d probably make fun of you.
He would take his cigarette in his fingers, smoking it, as he listened to your sad story.
“What kind of friends you have, it hurts more his stabbing that one of an enemy” Joker threw his cigarette to the floor and crushed it with his shoe. He came up to you, taking off your wig, caressing your hair and smelling it. That caused sensations in you.
He came to your ear and spoke.
“y/n, my name it’s Arthur, and from now you’ll come with me”
“What? But my boss gonna kill m—"
“If he dares touch you, I’ll break his damn face, by the way, is your friend male or female? It’s working here?”
With that question you knew that nothing good was coming. But anyway, you wanted to get out of there.
“It’s a man, it’s the bartender”
“Hmmm... Follow me”
You two left the room, taking you with his left hand. With his right hand he looked for something in his pockets.
“The party is over!” Joker screamed, the clowns stopped and got up, leaving the dancers aside. He let you for a moment, heading to the bartender “Hey you! You fucking liar!” he pulled out his gun and fired right in his head. The dancers screamed in fear, you too, the bodyguards pointed it at him with more guns. Joker took you again, surrounding you with his arm.
“I had a problem with him, personal matters, I’m sorry about the mess” Your chest contracted, he blamed himself for you “I’m going to take her, I want her for me, and nobody here will change my mind, and if you try, you’ll end up like that asshole”
Fear for both, you were hoping they wouldn’t attacked you two.
But the truth was that no one was drawn to mess with the Joker.
You watched as everyone stared you, in fear and pity, how you trapped in the clutches of the Joker. You wanted to make fun of them, but it wasn’t the time.
Away from everyone, Joker took you with him and his clan, leaving that horrible brothel.
That magical night, after you two made love, you asked him why he pulled you out of that awful place. Thoughtful, with his makeup ruined for your kisses, he answered.
“Love at first sight, perhaps?”
You smiled to him and kissed him again. Maybe you felt love at first sight, too.
Your life took a huge turn from Joker rescued you. You felt he was going to save you from the second he confessed you his real name. Name by the way, you tattooed between your fingers. In your other hand, you had his “other” name tattooed.
Looking your tattoo between the glass of cognac, Arthur Fleck was the best thing that could have happened you in your sad life.
“Why are you dressed, y/n?”
You turned back, there he was, just with his red pants. Seeing like this I’ll turn you in.
“I was hungry, what if I had breakfast naked and any of you men came? How embarrassing that would be”
“Oh yeah? What kind of breakfast are that?” Arthur took your cigarette and started smoking. You decided to leave it to him.
“My favorite”
“Your favorite? I thought I am your favorite breakfast” Arthur took you from the waist. You saw his emeralds in his eyes, his worn makeup, being Joker and Arthur at once. How not fall in love with that man?
But what excited you more is that he was your man.
“You always are my favorite, Art” You kissed him. Arthur, with his feelings altered, he taking you to the bathroom, you two had a long and satisfying shower, he made you yours again there. Any part of the house he would make you yours.
How you loved him, and how he adored you.
When finally he let you get dressed, he would wear his crimson suit, again.
“You’re going to leave again Artie?”
“y/n, baby, I have business”
“I thought your business ended yesterday”
“Crime never rests, doll” Buttoning up his turquoise shirt, you could hear his lament in his voice, finished buttoning his yellow vest, he looked at you and took you by the cheeks “But tonight I won’t let you sleep”
“Like yesterday?”
He let out a laugh, you loved his laughs, more when are spontaneous.
“I only think in you, y/n, in your beautiful eyes, your pretty smile, you scent and how I want to fuck you every night, my doll”
That blush you. Like the first day.
Everything of Arthur freaked you, especially his madness.
“Cheeky boy” Kissed him again, you really wanted he would stay with you all day.
“I gotta go, I want you awake when I get back” Arthur put on his read coat, you helped him put it on.
“Be careful darling, I’ll wait for you for the dinner”
Within their strange relationship, moments like this warmed your hearts.
When you escaped with him, Arthur had the confidence to tell you about his past. Both were rejected, beaten and humiliated. Maybe that’s why that night he had the need to get you out of the brothel, maybe he knows from that second that he saw you for the first time that you and him were soulmates. He knew that both souls are scarred.
Those moments when you said “I love you” without telling him directly, the treasured in his memory.
Sometimes he wondered what would have happened if you had appeared when he was only Arthur Fleck, when Joker still did not appear.
He stopped thinking about it, was dumb. He had you by his side and it was all that matters.
Kissing his lips, Arthur left the home.
He spent the day working, as much he wanted to concentrate, he could not help thinking of your eyes, your body, all you.
And how much he wanted you.
He returned early, and noticed the door was open. Pushing it, he went into the house and felt was going to die. The room was a mess, one of your favorite books was on the floor, wet with cognac.
And a note stuck in the wall with a knife.
You knew perfectly, despite all the love you felt for Arthur, your safety remained the same as in that brothel. It could even be more dangerous.
The note was signed by Joker enemies.
The assault the last night he did it was insulting to them, and in revenge, you were kidnapped.
Continue.

Billboard #1s 1973
Under the cut.
Carly Simon – “You’re So Vain” -- January 6, 1973
Knowing who this song is about -- if there even is someone -- would make it a lot less fun. "You walked into the party like you were walking onto a yacht" is one of the greatest lines of all time. The subject of this song is a grade-A douchebag, and yet his life's kinda enviable, isn't it? He can fly his plane to see the total eclipse of the sun, he hangs out with spies, he seduces his close friends' wives, his horse wins races. But he "gave away the things he loved." He chose to be a movie character instead of having love, which is rather sad. It's a more complex song than it seems at first. And it's a lot of fun.
Stevie Wonder – “Superstition” -- January 27, 1973
Can't write too busy jamming. Okay so this song is great. The sentiment is one we need a hell of a lot more of. The music has my favorite funk beat. It's my favorite Stevie Wonder song, and one of my favorite songs period. Actually this is three in a row of my favorite songs now.
Elton John – “Crocodile Rock” -- February 3, 1973
Well that ends that streak. I don't like Elton John's music. I find it dull and irritating. I can't even pinpoint why entirely, because I can't listen to enough of his music all the way through. I have had to listen to this one all the way through at every wedding reception I've ever been to, though. It's a boring dance song, and boring dance songs are very bad things.
Roberta Flack – “Killing Me Softly With His Song” -- February 25, 1973
Roberta Flack is great, but I prefer the Fugee's version of this song. Flack's version is a little too color-within-the-lines for me.
The O’Jays – “Love Train” -- March 24, 1973
An optimistic, happy song about everyone loving each other and getting along. It's also a good dance song, which makes it easy to get on board.
Vicki Lawrence – “The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia” -- April 7, 1973
She killed her sister-in-law for cheating on her brother? Really? Really? Well this is where revenge leads -- now her brother's dead too. This song doesn't get at anything interesting and the story is simply unpleasant. The music in this song's not spectacular or anything, but it deserves a better story.
Tony Orlando & Dawn – “Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round The Ole Oak Tree” -- April 21, 1973
This lounge lizard singing a twangy country-ish song doesn't work. He doesn't know how to do it. Also, it sounds like they were trying to make it into a novelty song. Someone coming home from prison and hoping his wife will still want him is in very poor taste for a novelty song. This song somehow became about soldiers returning home. It's a really bad song for such a poignant and complex topic. It's a really bad song for anything.
Stevie Wonder – “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life” -- May 19, 1973
Stevie Wonder and his wife Syreeta Wright were in the process of breaking up when they recorded this love song together. They stayed in each other's lives until Syreeta passed away, though. Knowing that makes this song even more moving.
The Edgar Winter Group – “Frankenstein” -- May 26, 1973
How did a hard rock instrumental reach the top of the charts? The riff is pretty great, and some cool things are going on with the electric guitar. Hard rock instrumentals aren't my thing, though. But I think it's good, even if I don't want to listen to it.
Paul McCartney & Wings – “My Love” -- June 2, 1973
John and Paul both started producing lighter, slower songs after The Beatles broke up. I feel like George was keeping them grounded. Or I guess maybe Ringo -- who knows? This is tolerable, which is more than I normally say about too-light 70s love songs. Actually I think this is also a sex song. For the most soporific sex imaginable. Paul McCartney's bass playing was awesome when he was in The Beatles. I don't get why he didn't build songs around that after they broke up.
George Harrison – “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” -- June 30, 1973
Another spiritual song from George Harrison, but it's better than "My Sweet Lord" in multiple ways. First, the melody's not plagiarized. Second, it has forward motion. You can actually dance a little to it if you want. Third, there's a bit of anguish there. Spiritual songs are always better when they have the tang of pain to them. And Harrison's guitar is on point. Pretty good.
Billy Preston – “Will It Go Round In Circles” -- July 7, 1973
The last two #1s were by ex-Beatles, and this one is by the man often called "the fifth Beatle." It's the best of these three by quite a ways. It sounds to me like it's about the creative process. A song with no melody, a dance with no steps. And the one I like the best: "I've got a story, ain't got no moral/ Let the bad guy win every once in a while." Sounds like his story's a lot farther along than the song and the dance.  The music is funky and soulful with a lot of different things going on, but without feeling overly crowded. Excellent.
Jim Croce – “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” -- July 21, 1973
Leroy Brown is a big, mean man, and everyone's scared of him. Until he goes after the wrong woman and her husband kicks the everloving crap out of him. Being big and mean doesn't count for much if you're a dumbass. It's sort of a country/funk blend, and I like it.
Maureen McGovern – “The Morning After” -- August 4, 1973
Mneh. I know why this one became a big hit; it was the ballad attached to a hit disaster movie. The Poseidon Adventure, one of the biggest disaster movies. I don't get disaster movies either. This song is schmaltz.
Diana Ross – “Touch Me In The Morning” -- August 18, 1973
Diana Ross sure sang a lot of songs in which she was desperate for a man who didn't want her. This time, she promises to be content with having sex just one more time in the morning with a one-night stand. How low maintenance of her. It's slow. It's boring. It gives me the icks.
Stories – “Brother Louie” -- August 25, 1973
Louie is white. He falls in love with a black woman. When he takes her home to his parents, they explode. I think he probably chooses to stay with her, but the song isn't clear. There's the fetishizing "Danger, danger when you taste brown sugar" line. Interracial relationships were really dangerous then still, so that's something. But I don't like the music, I don't like the singing, that one line is really bad and so I can't like the song at all.
Marvin Gaye – “Let’s Get It On” -- September 8, 1973
After learning about Marvin Gaye's life, I am extremely torn about this song. Marvin Gaye's father was a horrible right-wing preacher who made him think sex was a wicked thing. This song is Gaye's celebration of shedding the guilt instilled in him, and finding how wonderful making love was. But I still can't like this song. It's too light for me. (Marvin Gaye's father ended up murdering him -- he was truly a horrific excuse for a human being -- but at least Gaye was mentally free before that.)
Helen Reddy – “Delta Dawn” -- September 15, 1973
Helen Reddy manages a lot more emotion in this song than she did in "I Am Woman." I get it; I prefer stories to polemics too. That doesn't mean I like this song. A story song should have more than two verses and a repetitive chorus. Also, I don't like stories where women go mad because men promise to marry them and then split. I'm looking at you, Charles Dickens. Everyone's got tropes that make them itch, and this is one of mine.
Grand Funk – “We’re An American Band” -- September 29, 1973
My family moved a lot, but I always spent summers with my Grandmother in her cottage near Flint. So Flint is more my hometown than anywhere else. I'm definitely cool with a band from Flint laying claim to the "American Band" label. That doesn't mean I like the song. It's about touring and drinking and groupies, and then it's about repeating the chorus about a hundred and twelve times. Yeah, the music rocks, but it's repetitive and bores me as much as any soft rock ballad ever could.
Cher – “Half-Breed” -- October 6, 1973
I have a lot to say about this song. Way too much. Therefore I'm going to say nothing, except that nothing changes overnight, and this song is a massive improvement over the previous decade's songs about Native Americans.
The Rolling Stones – “Angie” -- October 20, 1973
I liked when the Stones were nice in "Ruby Tuesday." I don't like it so much in this one. It's a step too far. He's singing about how he still loves "you", Angie, but it's time to break up, and I just can't hear it as anything but insincere, fair or not. I feel like he's got someone else waiting. I do like how Mick Jagger makes "Angie" sound like "Angel" when he sings though.
Gladys Knight & The Pips – “Midnight Train To Georgia” -- October 27, 1973
Diana Ross was jealous of Gladys Knight and the Pips, and undermined them at least once. I am not surprised. Gladys Knight is a better singer than Diana Ross, and who wouldn't want the Pips singing and dancing behind them? This song is about how the singer's boyfriend is leaving on a midnight train to Georgia because he couldn't make it as a star in L.A., and she's going with him. Good for them. I love this song.
Eddie Kendricks – “Keep On Truckin'” -- November 10, 1973
Right into falsetto from the start. Sigh. This is a disco song, and it's not technically about trucking, but there are a lot of truck metaphors in it. I find a lot of disco weirdly hard to dance to -- I can't locate the beat somehow. I can dance to The Alan Parsons Project but not the Bee Gees. This is one of those disco songs I have trouble with. So it doesn't work for me to listen to or to dance to, and it's falsetto. Not bad falsetto, but still falsetto the whole way through. I don't hate it but I don't want to hear it again either.
Ringo Starr – “Photograph” -- November 24, 1973
This song is about looking at photographs of someone and missing them. It sounds a bit like an early Beatles song. George Harrison helped Ringo write it, and some of Phil Spector's collaborators gave it the "wall of sound" treatment. The former is likely why it's got a good melody and some interesting musical touches; the latter is why it gives me a headache.
The Carpenters – “Top Of The World” -- December 1, 1973
The singer is newly in love with someone who loves her, and it makes her feel wonderful. Very straightforward, honest, and unembarrassed, and Karen Carpenter's voice is gorgeous as always. The hook is dangerous; this song is likely to be in my head for a few days. That's okay though, because I like it.
Charlie Rich – “The Most Beautiful Girl” -- December 15, 1973
This is a country song in which the singer realizes he just destroyed his life, and is desperate to salvage it. He's asking if you've seen "the most beautiful girl in the world," because he needs to find her to apologize for the things he said that drove her away. It's sad and sweet, but it doesn't make me feel an awful lot.
Jim Croce – “Time In A Bottle” -- December 29, 1973
When this song would come on the oldies station, my mother would yell "Gah!" and change the channel to anything else. Her graduating class, very much to her chagrin, had decided it would be their song. (I don't remember what my graduating class's song was, but I remember some of us trying to get "I'm Too Sexy" to win and failing. I think we ended up being saddled with "I've Got Friends in Low Places.") In any case, I was prejudiced against this song before I heard it the whole way through. Jim Croce died young in a plane crash, so that is very sad. My reaction to this song is still the same as my mother's. It's glop.

Could new evidence prove footballer found decapitated with cut-off penis WASN'T trying to rape the wife of ...
WHEN handsome 24-year-old footballer Daniel Correa Freitas joined the throng of family and friends celebrating the 18th birthday of a friend, he had little idea of the horror that lay in store.
A champagne-fuelled evening in a local nightclub had culminated, in the small hours, at an impromptu party at the family home of Allana Brittes.
Golder’s News & Sport Ltd. (Golders)
Footballer Daniel Freitas shared on social media that he was in bed with his host’s wife
It was here, at 8am, the footballer sent a series of selfies on Whatsapp showing him lying in bed alongside Allana’s mother Cristiana.
“I’m going to devour the birthday girl’s mum…and the dad is here’’ a grinning Daniel wrote to friends.
One replied: “That guy is going to beat you up.”
Little could the friend have known the extent to which this casual, jocular prediction would come true.
Just hours after that exchange Freitas was dead, his body dumped in bushes in a nearby town – he had been castrated and nearly decapitated.

Revenge attack after rape
The gruesome discovery in the southern Brazilian city of San Jose dos Pinhais has made headlines around the world – not in the least because of the bizarre events that have unfolded in its aftermath.
Three days after Freitas’s body was found, Allana’s father Edison Brittes Junior, a well-known businessman – admitted to killing him, claiming it was a revenge attack after finding him attempting to rape his wife Cristiana.
The murder investigation has been full of twists and turns – and among the issues puzzling detectives now are toxicology reports showing that the amount of alcohol in Freitas’s bloodstream would have rendered him “very drunk” and probably “incapable of sexual assault”.

Allana Brittes had known Daniel Freitas for a year, evidenced by the Instagram picture of them celebrating her 17th birthday together
Yet while Brittes insisted he acted alone, police have also arrested both Cristiana and Allana on suspicion of helping to cover up the footballer’s murder – and they are still looking for another three people they believe may have been involved in his death.
The footballer on the cusp of stardom
The claims and counter-claims in the shocking case have transfixed the Brazilian public, who are still coming to terms with the shocking death of a boy who played in their equivalent of the Premier League.
Freitas, who was signed by leading club Sao Paulo two years ago, was tipped for a glittering future.
A popular figure among teammates, his soulful eyes and athletic frame meant he had no shortage of female admirers  – among them Allana Brittes, who he met last year while playing on loan for her home city of Curitiba.

Daniel Freitas was a successful footballer who played in the equivalent of the Premier League
This week, she insisted to police that their year-long friendship was purely platonic, although it was strong enough for Freitas to make the two hour-journey from Sao Bento, where he was latterly based, to join her intimate 18th birthday celebrations.
Only 20 people were invited to the party in a Curitiba nightclub on October 26th which continued into the small hours at the family home.
‘I’m going to devour the birthday girl’s mum… and the dad is here’
Exactly what happened next is the subject of the ongoing police investigation, but at some point after 8am, Freitas sent a series of WhatsApp messages to friends in which he claimed he was about to have sex with Allana’s mum Cristiana.

Accompanied by a selfie showing him lying in bed alongside either a sleeping or possibly unconscious Cristiana – still wearing the dress she wore to the party – the grinning footballer writes: “I can sleep here. There are several women sleeping all over the house.”
In a subsequent message he took things further: “I’m going to devour the birthday girl’s mum…and the dad is here’’ he wrote.
He followed it up with another message ten minutes later, which read simply: “I ate her”.
He was found dead by passers by, practically beheaded with severed genitals hours later.

In the immediate aftermath, Brittes did his best to appear normal, even ringing a friend of Freitas to commiserate over his death.
In a recording, obtained by Brazilian news outfit Globo News he called Freitas’ death “a tragedy”, offering to help and insisting that the victim had left the family’s house alive.
“Man, we don’t know what happened. He has not left (his) cell phone, he’s gone,” he said. “Allana is in shock, man. God, I had to try to soothe (her) down.”
‘He was beaten and killed cruelly’
His daughter, meanwhile, was also at pains to suggest she knew nothing. In a series of text message exchanges with Freitas’ anguished mother and aunt she too insisted that Freitas had left her home alone at around 8am.
“He just said goodbye, got up and left,” she wrote in one message to Daniels’ mother, adding,  “Let’s have faith. It will be all right”.
When his mother sent a subsequent audio message saying that Daniel is dead, Allana responded that she does not believe it. “Tell me it’s a lie,” she writes.

A day later, she posted a picture of herself with Freitas on Instagram suggesting she was upset that he had not sent her a birthday card.
“This year you did not send me one”, she wrote, alongside a crying emoji.
Murder confession and screams from the bedroom
Two days later her father was arrested on suspicion of murder – a murder to which he quickly confessed, claiming to have acted in a “moment of madness” after hearing his wife’s anguished screams from their bedroom.
In a televised interview with a Brazilian television station, he described smashing down the master bedroom door down to find the footballer lying on top of his wife.

“She was screaming and begging for help,” he says. “What I did was what any man would do, because the woman that was there was not my wife, she was every woman in Brazil.
“It could be your daughter, sister, mother or wife. At that moment it was my wife, Cris, who I have been married to for 20 years.”
He added: “When I threw him off my wife, I threw him on the floor and stopped her being raped by that monstrous scumbag. I hit him a lot, a lot and took him out of the house. I don’t know if he was awake or unconscious or if he had just closed his eyes.
“I wasn’t thinking of anything. I had a knife in the car, a small knife, which was with the tools in the boot
“I did not know I was going to do that, I was desperate, beside myself with rage. I looked in the boot and saw what was there.”

More than one attacker?
Adding that he had put the footballer’s body in the trunk of the car, he insisted that while his friends had helped him take him out of the house they had tried to stop him from committing the crime. “But they could not do it,” he insisted.
His version of events was apparently backed up by this week by both Allana –  who told police she too had heard screaming from her mother’s bedroom – and Cristiana herself, who in a statement to detectives, claimed she woke to find the player rubbing his penis against her before her husband stabbed him.
“Cristiana confirms that she suffered sexual abuse without penetration by (Freitas) who rubbed his penis on her,” her lawyer Claudio Dalledone Junior revealed this week.
Sao Paulo footballer Daniel Correa found dead in a bush in gruesome murder in Brazil
“She was drunk, asleep and thought it was a dream. She saw him on top of her and started screaming.”
The police are not yet convinced this is the truth, as investigator Amadeu Trevisan made clear this week.
“The facts don’t add up,” he declared, emphasising that it had not yet been proven whether Freitas had had sex with the suspect’s wife – and, moreover, that police believed that three more people participated in the footballer’s beating.
“We are identifying who was in the house with the main suspect on that night. We believe three people entered the room with (Edison) and the player (in order) to kill Daniel.

“Regardless of what happened between Daniel and the wife of the main suspect, the reaction of the aggressor was disproportionate. He was beaten and killed cruelly.”
Of that there is no doubt. Yet last night, as they prepared to question Cristiana, Brittes defiantly continued to insist that he committed the crime on his own – hinting that he would do the same again if he had to.
“Rumours always get started but the truth will come out,” he said. “I know I did what I did. I want everybody watching to think what they would do to keep the moral integrity of your family and help a small and fragile woman.”

Saltwater Siren by Muffy Wilson
Was it love at first sight? Perhaps. Many thought it might have been the work of the unscrupulous Sea Witch, Hermione, long a bitter and banished King’s Court Matron. So, was it the crafty wiles of Hermione, scheming to seek her sordid revenge, or was it a simple matter of serendipity? All we know for certain is that two young royals, one landed and one not, met during a raging storm as fierce and intense as the love they would none too soon escape. Was it fate, design, or—perhaps—black magic? Who’s to say?
What we do know is that it was sensuous, erotic, and insatiable as they fought to extinguish the passions that flamed their heat by indulging in every desire that swept them into one another’s arms. Their shared carnal voracity fanned an appetite no amount of indulgence could satisfy.
After all, it happened…Once upon a time…

Kiss of the Fallen by Kharma Kelley
Dear Readers, I just wanted to be left alone. I wanted nothing to do with the war brewing among all the Supernaturals and have grown tired of fighting all these centuries. All of us are screwed up anyway; but who am I to judge who drinks blood and who eats souls?     As luck (or lack thereof) would have it, I get sucked into one last mission with the vampires and the next thing I know, I find a half-naked demon chained to my bed; and let's just say she is not happy.  And, as much as I enjoy seeing a beautiful woman grace my bed, unfortunately, I'm not happy either.     Of all demons, someone delivers to me a Black Blood Slayer; demons bred to do one thing and one thing only: kill vampires.  Her blood is spiked with a desire I long to tame, but if I do, I could be six-feet under... again. And this time forever.  But her fighter's spirit and tenderness shakes me to my missing soul, wanting to claim her with a need I cannot name.  But with both of us on the run and my people gunning for us, how can I be sure she wants me to love or to kill?     -Commander Tristan Castillion, Vampire Royal Guard
Selene by Shelique Lize
My name is Selene and I am a moon goddess. Between my siblings and me, we control the balance of the universe. Without us, the mortal and immortal realms would be thrust into eternal chaos. Don’t ask me what that means. It’s what I’ve been told for as long I can remember. I have never questioned my existence because it was the only life I have ever known. Then one day, everything changed when I became enthralled with the earth.
I couldn’t resist the alluring beauty that beckoned me almost every single night. My curiosity was so fierce and dominate, it was becoming impossible to ignore it and I gave in. I found the only god brave enough to take me to the mortal realm but he wanted something in return. He wanted my body, and I gave it to.
I went to earth and experienced life like never before. It was like my eyes were opening and I started to question my entire existence. Feelings all of a sudden are very present and then everything changed again, when I fell in love with a human.
Being a goddess has never been so complicated.
One Last Lullaby by Kallysten
When Kirsten walks back into Jacob’s life after years of estrangement, it’s not to resume the relationship she once ended abruptly. Instead, she’s there to work as a mage for the same agency in which Jacob is a Special Enforcer… or at least, that’s her story and she’s sticking to it. Whether Andrew, her boss and one of Jacob’s fathers, hired her for her skills or to get her back in Jacob’s life is anyone’s guess.
Although Jacob is determined to see in Kirsten a co-worker and friend, he still loves her as much as he ever did. My Week in Manga: March 27-April 2, 2017
My News and Reviews
As regular readers of Experiments in Manga know, on the last Wednesday of every month I host a giveaway of some sort (usually manga-related) for which participants have a week to submit their entries. This time around the monthly giveaway is for the first volume of Coolkyousinnjya’s surprisingly delightful Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid. The winner will be announced this coming Wednesday, so you can still enter for a chance to win if you haven’t already. Also later this week, look for another guest review by my friend and fellow yuri manga fan Jocilyn. Elsewhere in the Manga Bookshelf sphere of blogs, The Manga Critic has started a monthly manga review index. There have been similar features in the past, perhaps most notably at MangaBlog, and I’ve always found them incredibly useful and valuable, so I’m glad to see Kate Dacey taking it on. Also in general, I highly recommend the content at The Manga Critic–Kate’s actually one of my major inspirations when it comes to manga blogging.
As for other interesting things I’ve come across recently: Chic Pixel’s Anne Lee has posted a really fantastic list of bibliographic resources for those curious about the academic study of boys’ love. (I’ve read quite a few books and articles myself, and even reviewed Jeffery Angles’ Writing the Love of Boys: Origins of Bishōnen Culture in Modernist Japanese Literature at Experiments in Manga a few years ago.) And if that’s not enough of BL studies for you, J. R. Brown has posted the slides from her Anime Boston panel “Boys’ Love, Otome Culture, and Gender” which covers everything from the origin of shoujo manga to gay comics and more. On their own the slides are fairly informative, but I’m looking forward to seeing the annotated version, too.
Also at Anime Boston, Viz Media made quite a few licensing announcements. Some were digital-only while others were digital-first or print-only. Here’s a quick list of the books that will eventually make their way into print: Kenta Shinohara’s Astra Lost in Space, Abi Umeda’s Children of Whales (I’m particularly curious about this series), an omnibus edition of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s Death Note collecting the entire series and a bonus epilogue in a single volume, Nisioisin’s Hikaru Nakamura’s novel Juni Taisen: Zodiac Warriors (I’m not familiar with the novel, but the creators involved have certainly caught my attention), Kenji Taira’s Naruto: Chibi Sasuke’s Sharingan Legend, Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu’s The Promised Neverland (which is supposed to be fantastic), a collection of nine Junji Ito stories and accompanying material selected by Ito himself called Shiver (always glad to see more Ito being released in English), Maki Enjoji’s SP Baby, and Sui Ishida’s artbook Tokyo Ghoul Illustrations.
A couple of Kickstarter projects recently launched which may be of interest as well: All the Anime/Anime Limited is joining forces with Studio 4°C to create a home video release of Masaaki Yuasa’s directorial debut Mind Game. Digital Manga has entered the fray again with a campaign to release more of Osamu Tezuka’s manga in print: Ambassador Magma, Dust 8, The Euphrates Tree, Metamorphose, Say Hello to Bookila, The Thief Inoue Akikazu, Wonder 3, and Yakeppachi’s Maria. It looks as though the print runs will be very limited and Kickstarter may be the only way to get a hold of some of the titles. (I have to admit, I certainly have my qualms about Digital Manga’s business practices in general and over-reliance on crowdfunding specifically. The quality of Digital Manga’s releases has really gone downhill over the last few years, too. Honestly, I’ve lost most of my confidence in the company as a publisher, but it’s managed not to completely go under yet.)
Quick Takes
Dawn of the Arcana, Volumes 1-6 by Rei Toma. I generally enjoy epic fantasy of the shoujo variety, so I’m not entirely sure why it’s taken me so long to finally get around to reading Dawn of the Arcana. So far, I’m enjoying the manga tremendously. Nakaba is a princess who has been married off to a prince of the neighboring kingdom despite her questionable ancestry in a half-hearted attempt to secure peace between the two countries. But instead, gifted with the ability to see both into the past and into the future, Nakaba may find herself in the unlikely position of leading a revolution. Dawn of the Arcana does come across as a rather typical example of high fantasy–all the way down to the heroine’s fiery red hair–but even though it hasn’t really made itself stand out yet, the manga is a solid series. I greatly enjoyed the manga’s mix of court and political intrigue, action, and complicated interpersonal relationships. Much like the story, the artwork tends to be somewhat standard although attractive. Toma’s backgrounds are generally fairly sparse, but the details put into things like the characters’ clothing is lovely. I definitely look forward to reading more of Dawn of the Arcana in the very near future.
Hana & Hina After School, Volume 1 by Milk Morinaga. I believe that Morinaga is currently the most well-represented yuri manga creator available in English. So far, five of Morinaga’s manga have been translated, the most recent being Hana & Hina After School. Interestingly, in Japan the manga was serialized in a magazine aimed at a general audience rather than one specifically catering to yuri fans. The titular Hana and Hina are two young women working part time at a store specializing in cute character goods even though their high school forbids its students from holding jobs. The story follows their relationship as they become friends and slowly realize that their feelings may evolve into something else. Like most of Morinaga’s other manga that I’ve read, Hana & Hina After School tends to be rather cute and sweet. The series is enjoyable and pleasant even if it is at times a little silly and somewhat unbelievable. However, the end of the first volume does introduce some sobering concerns when Hina is confronted by a few of her classmates homophobia, an unfortunate reality that many yuri manga tend to gloss over or ignore entirely in favor of pure fantasy. (Granted, that fantasy is important to have, too.)
Scum’s Wish, Volumes 1-2 by Mengo Yokoyari. I wasn’t initially planning to pick up Scum’s Wish, but after reading a few positive reviews of the series I decided to give it a try after all. The cover art of the first volume is deliberately provocative, but the manga isn’t nearly as salacious as it might imply. In fact, the series can actually be surprisingly contemplative. Scum’s Wish is a manga about unrequited love. Almost every character in the series is pining for someone with whom an involved romance would seem to be impossible or at least inadvisable, resulting in a complex web of personal relationships fraught with loneliness and anguish. (There is one heck of a love polygon going on in Scum’s Wish and nearly everyone who is introduced is connected to it somehow.) Hanabi is in love with Narumi, her childhood friend who now also happens to be her homeroom teacher. Mugi is in love with Akane, a music instructor who used to be his tutor. Recognizing that they are suffering under very similar circumstances and hoping to ease some of the pain, Hanabi and Mugi agree to find comfort in a relationship together. Neither one of them is in love with the other, but they are both aware of and take advantage of that fact.
Deep Red by Hisashi Nozawa. Although perhaps best known as a screenwriter, Nozawa was also recognized as an accomplished novelist. Deep Red, which earned Nozawa an Eiji Yoshikawa Prize in 2001, is his first novel to be released in English. Kanako is the only survivor of the mass murder of her family, simply because she happened to be away on a school trip when her parents and two younger brothers were killed. Understandably, their deaths have left a great wound, but Kanako isn’t the only one left troubled and hurt–the life of Miho, the daughter of the murderer, has also been irrevocably changed. At times, Deep Red is uncomfortably voyeuristic and there’s a peculiar fixation on Kanako’s body and sex life with her boyfriend. I was never entirely convinced by Kanako as a character, either. However, Deep Red does provide an interesting psychological exploration of hate, anger, and misplaced revenge. The novel is instantly engaging. However, the middle portion of the narrative is repetitive and does drag a fair bit; I admittedly started to lose my interest and patience with the story. But once Kanako becomes obsessed with and decides to pursue Miho, Deep Red picks up speed again and the novel’s ending is very satisfying.
