Loveland frog
In Ohio folklore, the Loveland frog (also known as the Loveland frogman or Loveland lizard) is a legendary humanoid frog described as standing roughly 4 feet (1.2 m) tall, allegedly spotted in Loveland, Ohio. In 1972, the Loveland frog legend gained renewed attention when a Loveland police officer reported to a colleague that he had seen an animal consistent with descriptions of the frogman. After a reported sighting in 2016, the second officer called a news station to report that he had shot and killed the same creature some weeks after the 1972 incident and had identified it as a large iguana that was missing its tail.
On March 3, 1972, at 1:00 am, Loveland police officer Ray Shockey was driving on Riverside Drive near the Totes boot factory and the Little Miami River when an unidentified animal scurried across the road in front of his vehicle. The animal was fully illuminated in his vehicle's headlights, and he described it as 3 to 4 feet (0.9 to 1.2 m) long and about 50 to 75 pounds (25 to 35 kg), with leathery skin. He reported spotting the animal "crouched like a frog" before it momentarily stood erect to climb over the guardrail and back down towards the river.

Cryptid of the Week: Loveland Frog
The Loveland Frog is a giant frog. It was first reported in 1955, at least according to legend, and there were three of them-- about 3 feet tall, with leathery skin, and frogfaced.
Officer Ray Shockey was the next to report a sighting in 1972, and two weeks later officer Mark Matthews reported a similar sighting. Matthews, however, shot and killed the animal.
Looking at its corpse revealed it was a tailless iguana, and Shockey agreed it was the animal he'd seen previously.
There have been more recent reports, like in 2016.
While this cryptid seems to be pretty case-closed in some regards, nothing is ever straightforward. There are claims that Matthews has given false accounts, or 'stretched the story', so to say. There are plenty of places at have legends of amphibious or reptilian creatures, making it easy for a new story to pop up and slot in with the rest like it's always been there. And sometimes, people just want to be a little famous.
Who knows? Maybe the real Loveland Frogs are the friends we made along the way

Niche Crytpids #1: The Loveland Frog
The Loveland Frog is an urban legend hailing from Loveland, Ohio, that started in 1955 when a travelling salesman reported seeing three unusual frog like humanoids on the road before they scuttled off into the wilds. In some versions, it's only one frogman, and in others the frogman shoots sparks from his hands like a wizard. Pretty cool.
Throughout the years there were additional small sightings, with one of the most well-known happening in 1972 when a police officer witnessed a strange hunched animal on the bridge that escaped by jumping over the guard rails down to the creek area below. A few weeks later, another officer patrolling the same general area ran into it again. Being an American cop, he of course shot it and threw it in the trunk of his car to take to the station where the first officer confirmed it was what he had seen weeks prior. The organism was reported to be an iguana with its tail missing, likely an escaped or released pet. However, after this incident, the officers were interviewed by a writer working on a book about urban legend who conveniently left out the iguana part, leading to years of misinformation and explaining why there are now entire new articles weaving together conspiracy theories about the cops covering up frogmen. Yep. At least years later the officer was re-interviewed, where he was very rightfully annoyed about this and told the full story.
Loveland frog sightings have persisted to the present. In 2016, some teenagers playing the then popular mobile game Pokemon Go! near a local lake witnessed a frog creature swim and walk onto land, even allegedly snapping few pics. However, after this event, a DIFFERENT teenager admitted to it being them wearing a frog suit and messing around. Weirdly enough, there have been several recent accounts where it has turned out to be a teenager in a frog suit. I wish that were me.
Please note that at the end of the day, all of these events are modern folklore, and despite the short timeline, multiple versions, accounts, and conspiracies' for all of these events appear. This is just a summary of the most widely accepted or known points.
This month's illustration was chosen by my Patrons, who picked "niche cryptid". Thanks guys!

On This Day in Cryptid History
August 4th: In 2016, news broke that the Loveland Frog had been seen by a couple playing Pokemon Go In Cincinnati, who also took a photo. It was later revealed that the sighting and photo was a hoax, a prank conducted by a high schooler with a frog costume.

‘Frogman’ Is Cryptid Found Footage Done Right
Tumblr media
The found footage creature feature is an elusive beast. Yes, we have bigger budget examples such as Cloverfield and Trollhunter, but really they’re few and far between. Yes, it’s often due to budget, but director Anthony Cousins’ feature film debut Frogman, which had its world premiere at Popcorn Frights, proves it is possible. His lo-fi cryptid film proves you can do creepy creature found footage that’s both impressive and effective. Plus the film answers the age-old question, does the Loveland Frogman fuck?
For the uninitiated, the Loveland Frogman is a giant frog humanoid said to lurk in the woods of Loveland, Ohio. Stories of the creature have circulated around the regions for decades and it’s become a bit of a lure for tourists, especially those like me who are drawn to cryptids. Loveland Frogman merch abounds and the creature is even the town’s mascot...

Loveland Frog?
Tumblr media
Pale white flesh that seems like it has never seen sunlight is in the process of decay but sharp, angular teeth can be seen jutting out from what once was a jaw of some sort on a bizarre carcass that washed up on a beach. The camera pans around to the front of the monstrous face, showing a short, flat snout gaping open to display a fearsome bite on an otherwise round and bulbous head. It has a thick neck leading to a long twisted body that seems to have four human-like limbs that end in long claws.
Some believe this creature matches an eerily close description of the Loveland Frogman monster, said to be a humanoid frog-like amphibian creature first seen in Ohio...
