Fuel is starting to run low in the west - highway service station at Wilcannia is shut, can only purchase $20 worth at Emmdale, so made it to Cobar with 4km in the tank - lucky the Shell is at the western end of town! At the eastern end is the Peak Mine and over the road is the Heritage Centre with this relocated mine head and bronze miners memorial. We still had daylight so we made it to the Nyngan van park, on the banks of the Bogan. Yes I have seen bogans in banks before! They are happy to take visitors who are trying to head home. 600km down today and only 400km to go. Long lines at the gas pumps this week for preparation of hurricane Dorian reminded me of a smart habit my Dad had. Knowing that he would have to let his car run for thirty minutes before driving off due to freezing temperatures, he never had the gas tank less than half full.

Do you seem to let your gas tank get below a quarter of a tank and your fuel light comes on a lot? Then this #TuesdayTip is for you.

Your fuel pump, in your gas tank, uses suction to draw the gas out of the tank. It uses the gasoline to keep it working properly. The gas does this by lubricating the pump and keeping it cool. When your tank is low on gas the pump will be above the gas. Why this is important is the pump will heat up and dry out. Causing it to not work properly.

Another potential issue is debris (rust and dirt) clogging the filter that sits inside the pump. When the gas is low the debris will collect closer to the bottom of the tank and will get inside the filter causing the pump to use more energy to run. That will cause a vicious cycle of using more gas which will make the problem worse.

If you are experiencing bad gas mileage and cannot pinpoint why. Then bring it by #HoosierMuffler and talk to #LarryandJosh about it. It could be this or just something easily fixed like low tire pressure.
