The Full Moon of 2021 : Every Full Moon of 2021 shines in this year-spanning astrophoto project, a composite portrait of the familiar lunar nearside at each brightest lunar phase. Arranged by moonth, the year progresses in stripes beginning at the top. Taken with the same camera and lens the stripes are from Full Moon images all combined at the same pixel scale. The stripes still looked mismatched, but they show that the Full Moon's angular size changes throughout the year depending on its distance from Kolkata, India, planet Earth. The calendar month, a full moon name, distance in kilometers, and angular size is indicated for each stripe. Angular size is given in minutes of arc corresponding to 1/60th of a degree. The largest Full Moon is near a perigee or closest approach in May. The smallest is near an apogee, the most distant Full Moon in December. Of course the full moons of May and November also slid into Earth's shadow during 2021's two lunar eclipses. via NASA

Happy Lunar New Year! It's the Year of the Dragon!!
I've seen the new Dislyte banner and it just reminded me about some fun thing about how we talk about Lunar New Year and some things surrounding it.
So as a primer, the Lunar New Year is based on the Harvest Calendar 农历 (Nong Li) as opposed to the Gregorian calendar that we use in most of the world today. The Nong Li Calender follows the cycles of the moon, hence the reason it's known as the Lunar Calendar in english and other western languages.
Tumblr media
So when we mention Spring Festival 春节 Chun Jie it encapsulates the entirety of the first 7 or 15 days of the Lunar New Year (16, if we count New Years Eve). All 15 days are significant and depending on how big or how close your family is, there's slightly differing tradition.
New Year's Eve - 除夕 Chu Xi - Everyone arrives home and we have a big reunion dinner with our immediate family.
New Year's Day - 大年初一 Da Nian Chu Yi - Officially Chinese New Year, we'll go around visiting our eldest relatives to wish them a happy new year bai nian. Families tend to congregate at the home of the eldest living relative (great-grandparents' homes, grandparents' homes, eldest uncles homes) Wearing red, Firecrackers, Dragon Dances and Lion dances are all common parts of the celebration! By legend it is used to scare away the evil monster Nian who used to eat people!
youtube
(Lion Dancers will go up to people's homes and businesses as a troupe to usher in the new year! It's also a highly acrobatic sport with its own institutions, definitely check it out!)
Seventh day of New Year - 人日 Ren Ri - Day of Humans - we consider it the day where the first humans were created by Nuwa, so it's everyone's birthday! Festivities for most households tend to end on this day or on the eighth of New Years.
Tumblr media
Fifteenth day of New Year - 元宵节 Yuan Xiao Jie - Lantern Festival marks the official end of the New Years/Spring Festival. In Hokkien we call it Chap Goh Mei 初十五 (literally 15th [of the new year])
You can read about the other days of Lunar New Year here: https://www.nypl.org/blog/2021/02/11/15-days-lunar-new-year !
Furthermore in my home city of Johor Bahru we have a special procession on the 21st of the new year's called the Chingay Parade.
Tumblr media
So how should I wish people who celebrate Lunar New Year?
Happy Lunar New Year! is good (abbreviating to Happy LNY! is cool too) this is for consideration of for example Koreans, Vietnamese, Hmong, and other diasporic Chinese Lunar New Year celebrators!
In my country of Malaysia, Happy Chinese New Year is the norm because most people that celebrate Lunar New Year happen to be ethnically chinese.
恭喜發財 (Gōng xǐ fā cái) - Wish you wealth and prosperity
身體健康 (Shēn tǐ jiàn kāng) - Wishing you good health
萬事如意 (Wàn shì rú yì) - May everything go well for you
Bonus:
What are Red Packets and how do I get one? (lol) 🧧
It's also generally alright to go visit or 拜年 bai nian with your neighbours that celebrate Lunar New Year during this period of time, remember to bring a pair of mandarin oranges with you! (Remember to always bring mandarin oranges in pairs as it's seen as good luck.) You might want to contact them ahead to see if they're around XD Unmarried folks can get a red packet from the hosting family for wishing them a happy new year. It's kind of like trick-or-treating lol.
新年快乐!!

clowning: xzs xi’an food vlog edition 🌶️
you all know the drill. for cpn-loving turtles only. don’t take it too seriously.
Tumblr media
i honestly didn’t expect another food vlog from xz. his past adlad cities had them but it slipped my mind that he did go to a xi’an this time and spent quite a bit of time there — so we’re due another episode. i’m really thankful to xz and his team for the effort they put to share with us!
a few clowning points here ⤵️⤵️⤵️
The first one is how XZ can’t seem to handle spice well anymore, like a chongqing native should. Then you have WYB whose tolerance for spicy food increased. It could be that XZ has been living in BJ for so long that his taste has changed or maybe, he is thinking of the other person in his home who does not like spicy food. This is a long running cpn in cpf circles, that their preferences changed after spending time together. You can interpret this as a sign of a romantic relationship or not — but they definitely spent a lot of time together for their tastes to change and then be the same. except for garlic cause xz can’t really deal with that lol.
case in point, both wearing clothes that are for sun protection ( bobo’s is an ad, but he wears one in his personal time too ) and eating cold skinned noodles ( liangpi ). lol. i swear they have the same aesthetic sometimes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
we always joke that xz is the art student and wyb is the sport student — but they actually have a lot of things in common if you observe them more. Another one ZZ enjoyed was a meat bun (Roujiamo) which is a popular street food, but the cpn here is back in 2021 valentines day day they ( allegedly ) spent time together in Henan. Someone even saw Lele buying a lot of the same food and people were clowning that it’s for the two to eat as well. let me live in the fantasy that when they are together, they do this food tasting thing minus the camera recording.
and what is that? some people are pointing it out but i’m pretty sure it’s not a necklace. so funny how we panic when we see some vague clue of a personal necklace with XZ. but this is NOT it. Tho i’m still curious…. what could it be? 👀 popular guess is the string of an amulet. we know how superstitious he is so it could be.
Tumblr media
My favorite would have to be the meme/emoticon they used, because it reminded me of what CPFs usually post. I am not sure how popular this is, and i’m positive it’s not exclusive to bxgs, but thinking about xz or his team going to CPF part of the internet and becoming fond of this meme/ emoticon makes me happy. ☺️
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and well, same energy as this “incident”:
Tumblr media
The loudest CPN being talked about tho is ZZ’s wechat video account that just opened. It’s under his studio and was opened 5/17, the day their certification was completed. What a nice coincidence that this day in the lunar calendar is 3/28. ZHAN AI BO. Also 5/17 is the international day against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia ( remember ZZ shared the song somewhere over the rainbow back in 2016. and it’s one of those 🌈 clues that cpfs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
with all of ZZ’s “superstitions”, I feel like the day to open this new account was chosen. and it’s under his company Beijing Bamboo News Culture Media.
So if they already got certified that day, why wait for 5/18 to post. 18= Yibo. Not only that, on Wechat Video they posted at 20:05 which is 8:05. It’s not like weibo where the time stamp stays, users say it’s like IG that says “13 minutes ago..” but does not retain the specific time. So the screenshot below is the time was 20:10 and then XZS caption for the actual post was made 5 minutes ago, the time it was posted. 20:05. I’m not a wild kadian believer but this speaks to me. 😌😌😌
I’m excited for the next couple of days, cause hopefully we will get WDB 5/21. Which is still a rumor and who knows — will be a surprise drop. WYB allegedly going to an awards show 5/23 Huabiao Awards. Please make it happen. I’m looking forward to Movie Actor Yibo attending these kinds of awards show! 5/27 Chunzhen fanmeet with WYB @ Qingdao!!!! It’s been a while since he did something live! So this is a treat. && it’s the same month GG did his Molsion live/fan-meet too.
but wait wasn’t there rumors that xz will go to qingdao on the 27th too for condor heroes prep/training. lol. nothing is confirmed of course but it will be fun is they can be in the same city again for one day and not just in beijing.
-END.

Researching lunar calendar for fanfic purposes, and to make it match the timeframe of TDP, I searched for 2019-2021. Obviously, the lunar cycles don't quite match up (Callum's 17th birthday wouldn't have fallen on a full moon, but creative liberties), so the closest one would be on July 23, aka the "Full Buck / Thunder Moon"
And WHOA is that LOADED. Buck as in deer, deer as in the Rayla/Claudia foils (Claudia killed a deer, Rayla spared one but she was asked to kill people and repeatedly refuses to do it...). Thunder as in Storm Dragons, Thunderfall, Avizandum, and Callum's Sky Magehood. Thought it interesting and wanted to share!

A few more cute enamel pins... The Taurus one is from the 2021 Dabi calendar zine, and the little mage Dabi from the "Dabi's Journey" tarot deck zine. The Dabi/Hawks pin is from the Lunar Flare Dabi/Hawks tarot zine.
Below the break, I added some of my tin badges (strictly official merch), including the Dabi birthday badges from Shonen Jump. (I'll show the acrylics at some point.)

Hi there!
I'm putting together my calendar for the year, and i'm noticing thst the dates are shifting pretty far back. I know that the intercalatary month exists, but my question is who decides when it is? Is it just an individual by individual basis, or is it always, say, the fourth year in an olympiad?
Thanks for your input!
The dates shift because lunar movements don't fit seamlessly on a solar calendar like the ones we use today. When it comes to the intercalary months and the other intricacies of the method, we owe the system to Meton of Athens, who made the initial calculations for it and the system was officially adopted by Athens mid-5th century. This system is now known as the Metonic Cycle and is still the basis of some modern calendars today.
However, since the discovery of the Antikythera Mechanism, we know that by the 2nd century BC the system was used outside of Athens (Corinth, in particular).
Now, when it comes to the Olympiad system, they're periods of 4 years that used to match with the Olympic Games. According to these two reconstructions (numachi & episteme academy), we're currently in the 700th Olympiad.
700.1 (aka the first year of the 700th Olympiad), started on July 2021. 700.2 -> June 2022 700.3 -> July 2023 700.4 -> July 2024 The date of the New Year being on the 1st of Hekatombaion, it typically happens on the new moon of July. The month-long discrepancy last year was due to it being an intercalary year.
So we're currently in 700.3 aka the third year of the 700th Olympiad until next July.
Hope this helps!

Words from Noragami, ch. 46
Words in bold are particularly relevant to the story, and words in italics seem like they’d be worth remembering outside the context of the manga. Bold and italic together means they’ve probably appeared somewhere in Noragami more than once. [Though it's been a kajillion years (okay three actual years) since I read it so I can't promise I can highlight them well anymore...]

Mark your calendars, Hoyofair 2024 New Year is set for December 30th! More info. here and here!
It's a combination of Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, which... I guess makes sense, those games make up the bulk of Hoyolab content. A shame there's nothing with Honkai Impact 3rd, but who knows, maybe that'll change when part 2 is out. As usual, Tears of Themis stays forgotten.
It's kind of funny that Hoyofair used to be held on around Genshin Impact's anniversaries (late September), but I guess they switched things up now with how much stuff fans keep making and sharing. It's a lot.
For the record, previous Hoyofairs streams were:
2021 (Sept. 26th)
2022 (Sept. 23rd)
2023 New Year (Dec. 30th)
2023 Spring (April 15th)
2023 (Sept. 23rd)
If you go to the official Hoyofair YouTube account and check their playlists, you can look back on all these streams!
...purely speculation, I wonder if the future Spring Hoyofairs are to help celebrate Honkai Star Rail anniversaries? Like how the ones from September happen to fall around Genshin's anniversaries. Seems like oddly coincidental timing.
A reminder that Hoyofair streams are not the same as the Bilibili Genshin Impact New Years (held around Lunar New Year) and Birthday (anniversary) streams! Perhaps we'll get a dedicated Honkai: Star Rail stream on Lunar New Year? We'll see by late January after more details have been announced.

Hello! Do you know what the next event after Blizzardous Threads of Red is gonna be? And is there a way to find out the order of future events? Thank you in advance :D
hullo anon!!! i am not completely Sure what the next event after Blizzardous Threads of Red but my guess is that after BTR we'll get some card reruns and minigame events, and then the next card event will be the Butterfly Kisses MR Card Event for Valentine's Day season
i say guess because currently the only way to predict upcoming events for the global server is by checking what happened on the cn server at around the same time frame, last year. doing this has its caveats though, because it's been noted that the global server is kinda 'speeding up' in a sense, so it's not really a 1 to 1 "what happened in cn server january 2022 is gonna happen in global server january 2022" because sometimes some events come way earlier
for example,
Romantic Rail Getaway Part 1 happened in march 2021 for cn server, but global server got it in november 2021
Secrets of the Tomb happened in sept 2021 for cn server, but global server got it in april 2022
Dreams of Childhood happened in March 2022 for cn server, but global server got in october 2022
and most recently Artem's Blossom Personal Chapter 1 happened in feb 2022, but we got it in dec 2022
(note: there are way more events that we got earlier than expected, these were just the ones off the top of my head
all that being said though, there are some events that are "time-locked" and cant be sped up because they are required to happen at a specific date, so theyre easier to predict since they Need to happen at that time. this includes LI birthday events, anniversary events, new year events (since tot likes to have a Big event to commemorate chinese new year/lunar new year), and special days like valentine's or christmas or halloween and the such.
here’s a great excel sheet made by dailythemis on twitter that shows the calendar of past events in both the cn server and the global server. this is what i use to kinda make my own predictions, just switch through the sheet tabs and start shooting ur shot with guesses taking into account all the variables kjhvkJHVK.
but heres a summary of whats upcoming
after BTR (and btw theres gonna be a limited top-up Marius card for this event too, this was already announced in by tot eng in their event calendar for BTR, so watch out for that), some card reruns will probably happen
Butterfly Kisses MR Card Event in february for valentine's day
Vyn's Blossom Chapter 1 probably after that (actually now that i think about it, they could also put this right after BTR too if they dont wanna do reruns or a minigame)
Main Story Episode 8 probably after that
ive got the faintest hunch that theyre gonna release Cozy Couple's Getaway part 1 way earlier too, since CCG is kinda like RRG so they might keep with the tradition of bamboozling us there HAHA
so yeah!!
im very sorry this response is kinda a lot kjkjVKJHSF i answered an ask like this before actually but i wanted to be more in depth with this response so it can be clearer. i hope this helps!!!!

New York City will add the festival of Diwali to the list of public school holidays in recognition of the growth of the city's South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday.
Diwali, known as the festival of lights, happens in October or November depending on the lunar calendar.
However, this year it falls on Sunday, Nov. 12 — meaning the 2023-2024 school calendar will not be affected by the change.
City officials say more that 200,000 New York City residents celebrate Diwali, which Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists observe.
"This is a city that’s continuously changing, continuously welcoming communities from all over the world," Adams said in announcing that Diwali will join celebrations including Rosh Hashana and Lunar New Year as a day off for students. "Our school calendar must reflect the new reality on the ground."
The new holiday will become official if Gov. Kathy Hochul, also a Democrat, signs a bill passed by the New York state legislature earlier this month making Diwali a public school holiday in New York City.
Adams, who pledged to made Diwali a school holiday when he ran for mayor in 2021, said he expects Hochul to sign the bill. The governor's office said Hochul, who hosted a Diwali celebration last fall, is reviewing all of the bills passed by the legislature in 2023.
U.S. Rep. Grace Meng, a Democrat who represents parts of the New York City borough of Queens, introduced legislation last month to make Diwali a federal holiday.

Chinese New Year
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New Year Chinese Festival 2019 Chinese New Year 2024 falls on Saturday, February 10th, 2024, and celebrations culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24th, 2024. Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday (February 10th–February 16th, 2024). Chinese New Year marks the transition between zodiac signs: 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, following the year of the Rabbit 2023, and the year of the Tiger 2022. (Traditions, Activities, Celebrations, Decorations and so on). 2024 is the Year of the Wood Dragon. Dragon is the 5th animal in the 12-year cycle of the Chinese zodiac signs, coming after the Rabbit and before the Snake. Recent years of the Dragon include 2024 (this year), 2012, 2000, 1988, 1976, 1964, and 1952, with the next Dragon year in 2036 (Year of the Fire Dragon). It is associated with the earthly branch symbol chen. Dragon is powerful, endlessly energetic and full of vitality, goal-oriented yet idealistic and romantic, and a visionary leader. They know exactly who they are and possess the keenest sense of self among the 12 zodiacs of Chinese astrology. Chinese New Year or 'Spring Festival' is a very important festivity for Chinese people everywhere, it is also China's most important festival and holiday time. Chinese New Year 2023 falls on Sunday, January 22nd, 2023, beginning a year of the Rabbit. Celebrations last up to 16 days, but only the first 7 days are considered a public holiday (January 22nd–January 29th, 2023). The exact date of the Chinese New Year changes from year to year, but is always between 21 January and 19 February. In recent decades, it has been the second day of a 7-day public holiday in Mainland China. In ancient China people used the moon to calculate time, and in the Chinese lunar calendar every month begins with the new moon. The festival has a history of over 3,000 years. Celebrations on lunar New Year's Day can be dated back to the ancient worship of heaven and earth. Over the centuries new traditions were added and celebrations became more entertainment-orientated. In 1967 food was rationed, and there was no money! Greetings were full of Communist fervor. Now people eat out for Chinese New Year, send e-money, and greet with instant messages on WeChat (the most popular app in China). Chinese New Year 2021 was the Year of the Ox. In popular Chinese astrology Chinese New Year is important... For Chinese people, years begin at Chinese New Year, rather than January 1! 2018: It's Dog year 2018 until February 4th 2019 (Chinese New Year's Eve). 2019: A year of the Pig will start on February 5th. 2020: A year of the Rat will start on January 25th. Every year of the Chinese Calendar has an animal's name. These animals are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, cockerel, dog and pig. The Chinese believe that a person born in a particular year has some of the characteristics of that animal.

Chinese New Year Decorations Chinese families celebrate the new year for two weeks and their main activities include 1) putting up decorations, 2) eating reunion dinner with family on New Year's Eve, 3) firecrackers and fireworks, and 4) giving red envelopes and other gifts. Chinese New Year merchandise Red decorations, red wrapped gifts, and red clothes are everywhere at Chinese New Year. They decorate their houses, towns and villages with coloured lanterns, flowers and many other decorations. They carefully clean the house and throw away old things. This means they are throwing away the bad luck of the past year. In many Chinese cities, from New Year's Day, traditional performances can be seen: dragon dances, lion dances, and imperial performances like an emperor's wedding. A great variety of traditional Chinese products are on offer, and rarely seen Chinese snacks. City parks and temple fairs are the places to go for this. Every street, building, and house where Spring Festival is celebrated is decorated with red. Red is the main color for the festival, as red is believed to be an auspicious color. Red Chinese lanterns hang in streets; red couplets are pasted on doors; banks and official buildings are decorated with red New Year pictures depicting images of prosperity. Most public decoration is done a month before, but home decoration is traditionally done on Chinese New Year's Eve. As 2019 will be a year of the Pig, decorations related to pigs will be commonly seen. Look out for red pig dolls for children and New Year paintings with pigs on. The festive period is one of the best times of the year to interact with Chinese people, and experience the local culture. However, it is also the busiest time of the year on China's transportation network. So, you might want to avoid the transport stress or seek out China's New Year culture, or both... It is very important for the Chinese to be with their families on New Year's Eve. Wherever they are, people are expected to be home to celebrate the festival with their families. The New Year's Eve dinner is called 'reunion dinner', and is believed to be the most important meal of the year. On this occasion the family eats a big, delicious meal together with many meaningful dishes. Fish is always part of the dinner, along with rice, different meats and vegetables. Each food has a special meaning, and the Chinese believe these foods bring good luck. Fish means an increase in prosperity, Chinese dumplings signify great wealth, and a Glutinous rice cake means a higher income or position. During this holiday period is also very common to visit nearby friends or relatives.
Tumblr media
Chinese New Year 2019 Celebrations Like people waiting in New York Time Square to see the ball dropping, Chinese people have the custom of staying up late on Chinese New Year's Eve to welcome the new year's arrival. After reunion dinner, families normally sit together to watch the Spring Festival Gala, one of the most watched TV shows in China. At the same time, most people send WeChat red envelopes or short messages to acquaintances by phone. It has been a long Chinese tradition to set off firecrackers from the first minute of their new year. Fireworks have increasingly been added to the cacophony. From public displays in major cities to millions of private celebrations in China's rural areas, setting off firecrackers and fireworks is an indispensable festivity. On New Year's Day the Chinese wear new clothes to symbolyze the New Year. Red is a popular colour because the Chinese believe that it is lucky. Like at Christmas in other countries, people exchange gifts during the Spring Festival. In rural areas and for older people the New Year gift giving tradition is still strong, but increasingly younger people prefer just to receive red envelopes (by hand or electronically). The most common New Year gifts are red envelopes. Parents and family members give children the traditional New Year's gift called "Lai see" (lucky money), that is a red and gold envelope with some money inside. They are given also to retirees and customarily only employers give red envelopes to working adults. Businesses and public institutions in China take a 7-day Chinese New Year holiday, except those who need to have some staff on duty. However, most large malls, tourist attractions, public transport, hotels, and restaurants will open as usual, or even stay open longer! When the public holiday period ends, China prepares to go back to work. Life returns to normal and schools reopen on Feb. 27. In China people are becoming less superstitious, but Chinese people traditionally believe that the year's start affects the whole year, so the Chinese Spring Festival is a season of superstitions. It's believed that what something looks like (color, shape), and what its name sounds like, gives it auspicious or ill-fated properties. The Luckiest Things to Do at Chinese New Year are: giving money/gifts in lucky numbers and lucky red packaging with lucky greetings.
Tumblr media
Chinese New Year Traditions Eating lucky food like fish on New Year's Eve, especially carp or catfish with some left over for New Year's Day. Lighting lots of red firecrackers and fireworks to scare away evil and bring good luck. The Unlucky Things to Do at Chinese New Year are: having an accident, especially if it means hospital visits, crying, and breakages: all bad omens. Giving gifts with unlucky meanings, colors, words, or numbers, or even saying something inauspicious. Sweeping up on New Year's Day: don't "sweep all your luck away". There are a lot of big Chinese communities outside China. In many big cities such as London, New York and San Francisco there are areas called "Chinatown". In these areas there are many Chinese shops and restaurants. Chinese New Year is a big celebration both for the Chinese and the local people of these places, and there are a lot of colorful decorations in the streets of every Chinatown. In New York City, the new year begins with 600,000 firecrackers, a ritual believed to frighten away bad spirits. There is a grand parade through Manhattan's Chinatown, with elaborate floats, bands, lion and dragon dances, Chinese musicians and acrobats. One last thing to remember: sweeping up on New Year's Day is considered unlucky. Don't sweep all your luck away! A very important celebration is the parade on New Year's Day, when there are a lot of spectacular floats. The dragon is an important part of the parade because people believe it is noble and lucky. In the parade a dragon can sometimes be twenty-five metres long and can have about sixty men move under its body and tail! People often throw money at the dragon and the dragon tries to catch it in its big mouth. Sometimes there is more than one dragon in the parade. If so, there is a dancing competition between the dragons. Lion dancing is an ancient Chinese tradition, and lion dancers are always part of the parade. Two men usually move under each lion. It has a big head and a long body. Musicians play the drums and cymbals too during the lion dance. There are also noisy fireworks. The Chinese believe that the noise frightens evil spirits. During the parade children represent the twelve animals of the Chinese calendar. Chinese children like wearing the costume of their favorite animal during the parade. There are also acrobats and musicians in beautiful costumes. Most of the costumes and masks in the parade come from China. The Chinese zodiac gives each year an animal sign. Read the characteristics of your sign. Are they true? Why or why not?
