SHAME. It's one of those things people would rather sweep under the rug and never talk about right? But we know it doesn't go away and if we don't deal with it it's bound to rear it's ugly head one day when we last expect it. 🤪 . As a close friend recently reminded me *we can feel shame about a lot of things.* Very true. This week I wrote a new blog post about the shame many people experience when they have a chronic illness such as Lyme disease. 💚 . There can be many reasons for these shame emotions including losing your job, not being able to help out around the house, feeling like you're not fulfilling your parent or spousal duties, or simply the shock of going from being a healthy person to being bedridden and unable to take care of yourself anymore. . But even though shame may be common it's also damaging and needs to be dealt with so you can be as healthy as possible. 🌿 . In the article I share about my past struggles with shame related to chronic illness. But more importantly, I give you 3 STRATEGIES that have helped me overcome the toxic effects of shame in my life. 🤗 . Wherever you are in life, know that shame is a liar. In keeping with Lyme awareness month here's a photo of some of the meds, supplements and injectables I use on a daily basis to support my health. . After going 2 years undiagnosed I went through a year of antibiotic treatments. After that I decided to pursue a more natural, holistic 🌿 approach to healing and did the Dr. Cowden herbal protocol for 9 months. I also tried Low Dose Immunotherapy (LDI) for over a year. Today I use essential oils, whole leaf liquid Stevia, a ketogenic eating plan, intermittent fasting and more. . I've given myself B-12 injections several times a week to help treat the debilitating fatigue. And when I was finally able to get out of bed I went to physical therapy to help regain strength due to weight loss and muscle wasting I experienced. . The thing about untreated Lyme and co-infections is that when the bacteria has free rein over your body for so long it can damage every organ and system. My doctors always say that it's like peeling back the layers of an onion. There are so many issues to address so we take them one by one. . I haven't always been a good little patient - far from it. 🤪 Before Lyme I'd go and do then push myself to do more - so being forced to slow down has been a battle of wills, so to speak. With this you're forced to stop and being stuck in bed for months on end really doesn't leave you many options. I've resisted this process many times... But that's for another post. 🤣 . I believe that God created us for a purpose and that I'm here on this Earth for a reason so much greater than myself. If you have Lyme or other chronic illness know that you matter. May is Lyme Disease Awareness month and I'm planning to post some things I rarely share about what my life has been like the past seven years living with untreated Lyme and co-infections. . A local reporter from KY3 | KSPR recently came to our home and interviewed me about my experience with Lyme. Ever since the interview aired I've received an outpouring of emails, IMs and phone calls from people in the area who are desperately ill with Lyme symptoms but have not been able to get answers or treatment. This breaks my heart each and every time. . For me, it took many doctors and specialists nearly 2 years to figure out what was causing my body to shut down and damaging my heart and nervous system, causing unrelenting pain throughout my whole body, several autoimmune conditions and too many symptoms to mention here. . My body was deteriorating so quickly that I literally believed I was dying. I tested positive for Lyme and Tularemia, another tick-borne disease. I was thankful for a diagnosis because it meant we had answers...and I could start treatment. The road back to health hasn't been an easy one but I'm thankful for each small gain and the slow and steady progress I've made over the years. I was bedridden for months and had to quit my teaching job. But Jesus was there for me even in my darkest hours and I'm thankful for His faithfulness in the storms.
