I got a boost of confidence publishing my first story, so here's another one!
Once again, not based on the movie Lord of Chaos and also not based on the real Euronymous, only Rory's portrayal!
Synopsis: "You're not that evil!"
"Shut up emo girl..."
Warnings : P in V, AFAB character, soft dom?¿, unprotected sex (don't do this at home), swearing
Like every friday after work, you made your way into the music store, looking at the new arrivals and in search of classics albums you didn't already had. Well, classics for you of course, because the young black metal enjoyer who worked there would tell you otherwise.
It was the same old routine: you would pick up a CD, maybe Pierce The Veil, or Bring me the Horizon if you felt fancy, he would ring you up, judging your music taste saying something in the line of :
"This is not real music"
You would scoff, telling him goodbye with a smirk and then go on your merry way.
But not today, after observing what you had brought, Øystein looked at you with a neutral face.
"Do you wanna come to my show tonight? See and hear what real music is?"
You laughed at his question thinking it was one unique way to tell you that your tastes were trash.
"No I'm dead serious! I can write your name on the vip list. Free show, who could say no?"
You thought a little bit, you had nothing planned really, what could go wrong?
"Fine. But if I hate it, I'm never coming back at this store"
"Shut up emo girl..."
He laughed, took your name and number for the list and bid you farewell, letting you go with your stuff.
You didn't know why you went, but there you were, surrounded by angry and sweaty men.
The band entered the stage and you could see Øystein to the right, hair covering his face while he played his guitar.
You couldn't lie, he was one good looking mother fucker.
The new sound intrigued your ears, but you didn't hate it. The lyrics were, non understandable, but the beat and the feelings were there, angry feelings mostly.
After the show, you scurried your way out the venue before receiving a text message.
Its Øystein. Enjoyed the show?
I can't lie, it was impressive..
Wanna come take a beer at my place to talk about it?
I can't say no to a free beer lol
While in theory it was a bad idea to go to a stranger's place at this hour, you had a feeling this man wasn't a threat, even if he was considered the "Lord of Destruction". You were also quite attracted to him, so...
Knocking on his door, you began to feel nervous, regretting the easy going girl you were 15 minutes ago.
He opened the door, greeting you with wet hair and only some pyjamas pants on.
"So.. The emo girl do like true Norwegian Black Metal!"
You scoffed at his statement and entered his appartment, blushing at the little clothes he had on.
"It was fine! A little bit too angry for me, but it wasn't AS bad as I thought"
He brought you a drink, leading you to his couch, before taking a swig of his beer.
"Well that's what we proclaim! Anger, rage, death, violence-"
You burst up laughing
"Yea right! All I could see tonight was a young music shop worker playing pretend with his little friends! But the music was good.."
Øystein looked at you with, once again, no emotion. You couldn't see if he was mad or sad, but you knew he wasn't laughing with you.
"Wanna see the real dark side of me?"
That's when your curiosity entered the room and the excitement made you kinda hot.
"I'm all yours for the night baby!"
He took you by your wrist, making you following him in his bedroom before throwing you on his bed.
You were quite shocked by his feriocity, but you were in for it. You ankered both elbows into the mattress, looking at him with envy.
"Strip for me beautiful"
And you did, but slowly, making him longing for your body while he rubbed his erection over his pants
Piece by piece, you reveal your naked self to him.
Øystein waisted no time before hovering you on his bed, pulling you in a passionnate kiss while exploring your body.
He released his lips from yours, trailing his mouth on your neck, your collarbone, nibling and leaving marks on your skin before beginning torturing your breasts.
You started panting, your breath going faster and faster. Your hands travelling and scratching his back before stopping at the waistband of his pyjamas, pulling them down so you could offer him pleasure as well.
You could feel his moans vibrating on your skin, making you want more of him, so you lead his member closer to you, letting his tip go back and forth in between your wet folds.
Understanding what you wanted, Øystein stopped what he was doing, replacing your hand by his on his dick, guiding himself slowly into you, making you melt under the sensation.
You crossed your arms behind his neck, pulling a little his long black hair as he thrust into you, finding a comfortable pace.
Your moans interweaved together as he went faster into you.
"F-fuck Øystein.. Don't s-stop!"
He watched you slowly coming undone as he rubbed circles on your clit, making you cry out of pleasure.
"So fucking hot"
Watching you squirm under him while your tits bounced to his rythm was to much for him, so without warning he came into you, you following not long after.
Øystein collapsed onto you and you took this opportunity to play with his hair while you both catched your breath.
He made sure to clean you all nice before pulling you onto his chest.
"You're really not as evil as you claim to be"
"Shut up emo girl"
I'm really tired this may be not as good as i thought it was gonna be lol

[ENG Translation] 辿りつく詩 (Tadoritsuku Uta) / The Song of Arrival
youtube
i never posted this here, but i translated tadoritsuku uta some years ago! i might wanna revisit this some day and revise it, but i think it's still pretty solid despite that so i thought i'd share this here too lol
and remember, you can listen to this for free on available streaming services!! ☝
Singer: Aramary Lyrics: Revo Composition: Revo
(translations under cut)
The Song of Arrival
Volume 9, Page 883
Ever so quietly, the blind poet Luna opened her lips...
The song I will sing now chronicles the struggles of a girl searching for what she held dear T'was a harsh journey filled with many arduous roads, but still, she never gave up In this tale, she chooses to sing through the pain instead of cursing fate So even if history were to bury everything away, simply close your eyes and listen
My beloved, where have you gone? I haven't a single trail to lead on On this lonely journey, all I've brought is this song That grows faint and fades into the distant sky oh so long
Rain falls from the heavens, spilling over Much like the droplets [tears] that drip to my palms with no closure
Trekking through many a thick forest and crossing over steep mountains From small towns to large cities, from old friends to kind strangers I traveled near and far with only you on my mind
Memories [dreams] soar throughout the skies filled with stars Much like the kiss [promise] that was ours...
"Oh, Endymio..."
Dusk engulfs the empty world I walk through All alone and no home awaiting, where am I to go to?
The prophecies of the Chronicle unfold as fact throughout the history of conflict War leaves behind scars on those it ravages and flames scorch the earth until it's lifeless Not knowing what happened to their families, their partners, or their loved ones, This was an era where people were torn apart by force
As if tracing the source of the song she'd brought along, The girl's travels led her to a man said to be a prison guard at a castle over yonder
And so, her journey came to an end with her suspicions proven true The one who'd written that heartrending yet nostalgic melody was...
Every time I found myself crumbling, you always came along And even in your final moments, my beloved [you] left me this nameless song
"O fate, you may have taken the light from my eyes — but you cannot take the song from these lips."
The song of arrival lights up the dusk, turning night into day Withered flowers continue to bloom in the cold, braving come what may
Ah, how devastating grief can be...
Though a storm may destroy everything and bring about despair, The things you hold precious will always be there
(The song of arrival, coming from those that you love) If you've found your way to something important, then you'll never be lead astray (The song of arrival, coming from those you hold dear) Even a path full of thorns is no trouble if you hum a tune along the way (The song of arrival, coming from those precious to you) After all, there is no meaning to life without song
Towards those precious to you... Towards the place you've finally arrived at... The white crow sets its eyes towards the horizon beyond the sky

Evelyn Thorburn Playlist
Because they say you can tell a lot about a character by their playlist, so, why not, right? :'D There is a possibility that I will add more songs in the future but for now I think she has a very solid playlist already.
"I've been losing myself in anger, so much broken by the rage, nothing could take my mind off how to make them pay, killing myself for nothing and the pain won't go away"
Her theme song. I really wanted a song from my favorite band to be her theme and I decided to go with Tell Me Why as I feel like it describes very well her arc about the truth behind her parents death, when she starts to wonder if she is on the right side of the story. "Tell me, why am I still here when it's all gone, I'm living with the ghosts of yesterday" this part of the song also reminds me of how she felt after the death of her parents and how that trauma stayed with her until her last breath.
"I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you 'cause I'll forget but I'll never forgive you, don't you know, don't you know? True friends stab you in the front" (...) "You can run, but you can't hide, time won't help you 'cause karma has no deadline"
The song that I imagine as the soundtrack for her scenes during the Return To Shiganshina arc, especially the moment when she literally goes feral after Reiner; real friends really stab you in the front. eheh A good day to be the armored titan, guess armors really can save your life, huh? :'D
"Now there's only one thing I can do, fight until the end like I promised to, wishing there was something left to lose, this could be the day I die for you"
I picked this song for the moment of her death, she died to save Reiner from the War Hammer titan (the irony eheh), only if she'd known that their dead friends would come to save the day before making such decision...just a bad and impulsive choice once again, she died by it, she died being herself.
"When she was just a girl she expected the world but it flew away from her reach and the bullets catch in her teeth, life goes on, it gets so heavy, the wheel breaks the butterfly, every tear a waterfall, in the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes, in the night the stormy night away she'd fly, dream of para-para-paradise"
Decided to add this song to her playlist because this is the perfect description of her old self and the turn her life took, this song represents her wishes an dreams to go back to her origins, to live in a peaceful and better world. The world to where she goes when she dissociates to escape the pain and stress of her reality.
"There's so much I carry with me, it was always my safe haven and now nothing makes sense, I've lost my best friend and if it's not too much, I ask for signs, there's only one word left, saudade, saudade, nothing more that I can say, says it in a better way" (Translated to english)
First, this is a portuguese song and the word "saudade" is unique to our language, there is no exact translation for it, but if I had to describe it, I'd describe it as a deep sorrow for someone you are missing. It is quite obvious why I picked this song and for which moment of her story it is destined...when she finds out about Sasha's death. Well, not exactly the moment when she gets the news but some time afterwards when it starts to actually sink in, the realization of losing someone is such a painful thing to go through... :(
"Fear is withering the soul at the point of no return, we must be the change we wish to see, I'll come into your world, see through your eyes, I'll try to understand, before we lose what we have, we just can't stop believing 'Cause we have to try, we can rise above their truth and their lies"
Yet another song from my favorite band because they have such relatable lyrics! This song is perfect for her first months in Marley, when she starts to slowly realize how messed up things were and eventually warms up to Reiner again out of empathy, deciding to give him a chance to make amends. Overall this is pretty much the soundtrack I picked for her desperate search for peace between Marley and Paradis.
"Well, you're my friend and can you see, many times we've been out drinking, many times we've shared our thoughts, but did you ever, ever notice, the kind of thoughts I got? Well, you know I have a love, a love for everyone I know, and you know I have a drive, to live, I won't let go, but can you see this opposition, comes rising up sometimes? That it's dreadful imposition, comes blacking in my mind, and then I see a darkness"
I picked this song mostly for her mental breakdown and how unstable she she has become over the years. This would also be a nice soundtrack to how she feels after turning her back on Paradis.
"Keep watching from your picket fence, you keep talking, but it makes no sense! You say we're not responsible, but we are, we are"
Picked this song to represent her feelings towards Paradis after finding out about the truth behind her parents death, that's all she could think about while her anger increased leading to the mental breakdown mentioned above, for her, it became very clear that both sides were at fault.
youtube
"Ah, and I don't hardly know her but I think I can love her, crimson and clover, ah, now when she comes walking over now I've been waiting to show her, crimson and clover, over and over"
This song wasn't on the original playlist I made for her but ended up adding it after getting so many vibes of Evelyn and Pieck that I ended up listening to it on repeat for weeks. So yeah, this is basically Evelyn's POV when she is around Pieck, a mix of feelings that she is trying to decode, attraction and a mist inside her head that she can't get rid of.

Avalanche
Least favorite track:
What You Need
Album art opinions:
The digital release of this album features a white umbrella with four raindrops on a black background, while the physical releases feature the albums title in black on a black background, while the inner parts of the physical release are very colorful, meaning to show that you have to look for the color/happiness even in the darkest of times. The umbrella on the digital release has a similar meaning: when it's raining get out your umbrella and carry on.
Color: 4/10
Recognizability: 7/10
Vibes: 9/10
Total: 7/10
Music opinions/notes:
This album is nothing short of anthemic. Jordan took his production style from the previous record and improving on it and giving each song its own identity. The use of string sections, 808s and other pop sounds, and even using Oli's voice as a synthesizer really brings the songs alive. Oli was still learning how to sing during the recording process of this and Sempiternal, but every song on this album is a lot more focused on clean singing. While the instrumentals are a bit more basic this time around, they still serve the songs greatly.
Mix: 10/10
Lyrics: 9/10
Instruments: 7/10
Vibes: 8/10
Total: 8/10
Total Score: 8/10

Five songs that remind you of the Seeds (outside of the game's OST) | Tag seen from @direwombat | Leaving the tag open <3
*I thought to include a snippet of the lyrics too when available
John Seed:
Kleptomaniac by DEZI
I'm a parasite I do anything to feed my appetite I'm gonna make this Hell look just like Paradise Sacrificial lamb, you think you've seen the light
Am I sadistic, do I do it on purpose? Antagonistic, am I making you nervous?
I crave the self-indulgence And I blame it on compulsion And I try to fight the urges But underneath the surface I'm a kleptomaniac
I'm gonna take it all And you're ok with that
Saints by Echos
You were standing there like an angry god Counting out my sins just to cross them off Saying that my tongue was too loud to trust And that my blood couldn't keep you
My dear, you're not so innocent You're fooling Heaven's gates So you won't have to change You're no saint, you're no savior
Looking at the Devil by Seibold
I like the taste of the poison I like the rush of the pain
I come alive in the darkness You know that I love the game While there's a snake in the garden No one's safe
See you bleed by Ramsey
I just wanna see you bleed Open you and set you free
Luci by ZAND
He's got a great big smile and cheekbones cut like knives But I know he's real ugly inside
Think there's gonna be a showdown Between my new hot friend and I My pocket knife is cutting up the ropes now Gotta try, gotta try I think there's gonna be a showdown Between my new hot friend and I 'Cause in the end, the ultimatum is that one of us has to die Not I
Jacob Seed:
Will you fight by Klergy, Beginners
Your time has come Can't tell hell from the sun When it's all said and done Who will you become? When nothing's as it seems Don't let 'em bring you down on your knees When nothing's as it seems Who will you become?
Will you run or will you fight? When the war comes
The Hunter by Sam Tinnesz
There's no rest for the fallen Oh we're burning the fields You're the snake in the garden And you're under my heels
Who's gonna save you Who's gonna save you now When the hunter comes
World Gone Wild by UNSECRET, Sam Tinnesz
Feeling the tension Pushing at the seams There's no way to stop this You can't stop this
The pressure is building It's getting hard to breathe No end to the madness
Four, three, two, one There's nowhere left to run
It's a world gone wild
Here come the wolves by Lola Blanc
Hеre come the wolves They're coming to get ya I run through the woods I'm not gonna let you go I'm baring my teeth, I'm ready My tongue is a sharp machete
Fighter by Jung Youth, Sam Tinnesz
I can feel the desperation All my dogs can smell the fear If you ain't ready for the belly Why you even coming here They been waiting for the end Before the game even begins And I've been fighting for my soul For my family for my friends I ain't ever giving up
Faith Seed:
River by Oh, be clever
I used to keep my dark a secret I used to keep my heart in pieces He said he liked me better as a mess He said he wants to save me from myself
Mermaid by Skott
Believe me, it is true You know that I would jump too Ooh, into the blue, into the blue It's proof, because we got nothing to lose And there ain't nothing to prove You know I'd jump with you
All I need by Roniit
Embrace me, I swear I'll be safe, I'll show you the way, open the gates I'm careful and believe me I'll stay I could be all that you're looking for
You're aimless, but you gotta be brave
Her & The Sea by CLANN (instrumental)
Chimerical by Roniit (instrumental)
Joseph Seed:
Reborn by Galleaux
I'm watching in silence Burying all I've lost Let this be the end Let me start again
Let the fire burn it to the ground Feel the world of ashes as it crumbles down Breathe the smoke, breathe it in Don't stop until it cleanses my sins
And I am reborn
And so It Begins by Klergy
You've been waiting Looking off into the night Search the horizon Watching out for smoke and fire You knew this day would come You aren't the only one And so it begins
The Beginning of the End by Klergy, Valerie Broussard
Reckless behavior is looking at a man Like he was a savior
Blind leading blind Everything looks darker When you close your eyes
Deity by Demo Club, TENDER (for the life of me I can't find the full lyrics, and I don't wanna guess them bcs TENDER be mumbling at times)
Shepherd of This Flock by JT Music (it's inspired by FC5 so ofc I'm including it)
Who found you while you were lost? When blind, who helped you see? Cuz I'm the shepherd of this flock I guide my righteous sheep Of your sins, I'll see you washed Then I'll set your soul free The word of God is one you trust So thank God He speaks through me

Posting my RvB Project Freelancer playlist because I have brainrot about some of these songs and also crave public opinions on them.
This playlist was built with two things in mind- the badass space marine vibes, flashy fight scenes, and fast-paced action that embody the freelancer arc, for one. Some songs I included primarily because they contributed to this overall energy that Freelancer was based around. That feeling of flying through the battlefield, guns blazing, with no regard to the danger. The kind of confidence that lets you jump off a building without worrying too hard about how you'll survive the impact- that lets you face an entire base worth of enemies and still crack jokes as they surround you. The kind granted by a ranking system that tells you "you've been chosen. you're the better than the rest. you're on the leaderboard."
But the other motivation, in perhaps direct opposition to the first, was the set of underlying narrative themes that poisoned the Freelancers from within.
(Further discussion, Spotify link, tracklist, and choice lyrics under the cut:)
The ignorance, intentional and otherwise, to the purpose of their missions- to the Director's true motivations, to the ethical principles being violated with every step, to the thinly veiled lies. The need to prove oneself- to stay on that leaderboard no matter what the cost, to remain worthy of approval, of power, of support that could mean your very survival. The betrayal and infighting to remain on top, to right the wrongs done- the break between the agents who valued loyalty and those who valued morality. The manipulation by The Powers That Be to participate in and perpetrate the horrors of war, to stain one's hands with blood and commit horrible deeds which ultimately have no purpose- believing the lies of 'us versus them', throwing away your innocence and believing that it's all for the greater good, only to discover that the people you've done these horrible things to are no different, no more evil than yourself. Eventually breaking free from those influences, despite the potentially lethal consequences, and being left with the near-impossible task of trying to become 'good' again. All of these were themes I tried to keep in mind and channel in this playlist. Bonus points touched on were the impact of AI on their hosts' physical and mental health, the quest to gain justice, and the attempts to find peace and be better after it's all said and done.
I found that while my primary focus was on the Freelancers themselves, a fair number of the songs applied just as well, if not better, to the simulation troopers and even the soldiers of Chorus. I enjoy that this kind of highlights how the main message kind of echoes through all the RvB arcs. I also think it's a notable point that a lot of the songs that I used to portray the manipulation and abuse of the Freelancers by the men in charge have the real-world messages of highlighting wealth and social inequality and abuse of the working class by the rich. This isn't something necessarily explicit in the RvB canon- but the vast majority of military recruitment comes from their exploitation of the desperation of the working class. This real-world issue has echoes throughout the story- in the Reds and Blues, yes, but also in the Freelancers. They say multiple times, "The Director's given us everything"; they've been lifted up, granted a better life, but it all depends on remaining in line, staying in the good graces of those with power. They eat, sleep, breathe because of Freelancer- they live on the ship, spend their whole days submerged in it. One wrong step, and they're back to having nothing.
Anyway, without further ado, here's the playlist lmao

Hate what they tell you to hate // Love when they say it's okay // Still, you have nothing to say anyway // And you don't even know you're a slave

Do you wanna leave me here? // With you 'til the end, imaginary friends // Give in to the fire and the fear, the liar in your ear // And you'll never be lonely again
34. Dear Dictator- Saint Motel
And at the trial, there'll be no jury // And all the dead are going to play witness // Not too late to say you're sorry // It's too late to truly mean it
35. False Confidence- Noah Kahan
Why won't you take me seriously // Look at me all fucked up over someone I'll never meet // And I wonder why I tear myself down // To be built back up again
36. Villains, Pt. 1- Emma Blackery
I don't feel anything // Because I became possessed and obsessed // With the idea of revenge
37. Woke Up A Rebel- Reuben And The Dark
I am wild, I am lost // I am sick, I am damned // But I am holding redemption in the palm of my hand // So I tighten my fist // And sharpen my teeth // It's a promise I made // It's secret I keep
38. Revolution- John Butler Trio
So tell me family now what do you think // Watch it all go down the great big sink. // Watch how the scum it rises to the top. // Don't you wonder when it's all gonna stop? // Sometimes I wonder how we do sleep, // Serving the dodgy companies we keep. // All kicking and scrounging for the very first place // Dictionary definition of a rat race
39. Survivor Guilt- Rise Against
Carry on // Don't mind me // All I gave was everything // And yet you ask me for more // Fought your fight // Bought your lie // And in return I lost my life // What purpose does this serve?
40. Pressure- Muse
Get out of my face, out of my mind // I see your corruption // I'm not blind // I'll carry the burden and take the strain // And when I am done I will make you pay
Note for anyone who actually read this far or looked at the selections here: yes I know these selections and bands imply something very specific about me, and the idea of some of these more popular and overplayed songs being paired with my melodramatic write-up might be laughable. I feel the need to qualify by promising my taste is not just the basic "action movie trailer" vibes or early 2010s radio hits this playlist sort of lets on... but these are the songs that make me Feel The Vibes and part of the vibes is the inextricable fact that I watched the Freelancer Saga in 2011-2012 when I was an edgy teen listening to Linkin Park and Fall Out Boy on repeat daily. Just be glad I branched out more than I did 11 years ago for this one.

that’s the way love goes ─ “we're going out to end up somewhere we'll regret, ‘cause in this town it's easy to forget” “that's the way love goes, when it cuts you when you bleed, that's when you're feeling it the most”
i’ll tag @louis-in-red <3

Bring Me The Horizon - That’s The Spirit (Review)
Tumblr media
Bring Me The Horizon’s 2015 hit That’s The Spirit is a masterclass in atmosphere and cohesion. The consistently muddied instrumentation cut through with perfect clarity in the vocals provides an unmatched sense of immersion, in an alien quality present for the entire album. Bring Me The Horizon is at their commercial peak on That’s The Spirit, and for good reason. The record was self-produced by keyboardist Jordan Fish, (what an excellent name) considering an external producer unnecessary.
While a lot of unconventional decisions were made in the production process, the critical reception was met with universal acclaim, citing That’s The Spirit as their most conventionally appealing album. Having moved away from their direct metalcore roots, That’s The Spirit leans more into alternative rock, with great success.
Track-by-track below the cut.
TRACK 1 - DOOMED
The record opens with a track that perfectly sets the stage for the rest of the album. The cold and deep sound immediately makes its presence known, providing a sense of isolation that will stay present for the rest of the album. Doomed arguably sounds overproduced, with a heavy filtering present on just about everything. I don’t consider this a negative, though; the album was made with the concept of our darkest moods in mind, but in a context making light of them. The pushy production carries a disorienting atmosphere, and stops you from feeling quite too close to the vocals.
This is an opening track done right, functioning almost as a macrocosm of the record as a whole. All of the elements heard here will be expanded on in later songs. 7/10.
TRACK 2 - HAPPY SONG
This is the closest thing That’s The Spirit has to a title track, with the album title being repeated as a lyric over and over. We leave the murky comfort of Doomed behind, to an instant rolling nu metal riff. This is where the themes of making light out of our darkness are most visible; the lyrics and sound are distinctly moody, but the sampled cheering and the title itself contrast it in a sick sense. Oli Sykes’ vocals are firing on all cylinders here, with a wide dynamic range of nu metal fry and gorgeous clarity. The chorus is ethereal, and the verses are all intimate and up-close, through the haze of the production.
Every moving part in Happy Song just works. The use of children’s voices are perfect for the bleak sarcasm the track champions. 10/10, There’s gonna be a lot of those.
TRACK 3 - THRONE
Throne is the most familiar track on the album to previous fans. The atmosphere and vocal techniques are reminiscent of their previous album, Sempiternal, but with a distinctly That’s The Spirit aspect to their production. The lyrics are powerful and motivating, second only to the way they’re delivered. If this song resonates with you, it resonates hard. The synth lines prop up Sykes’ performance, and the choice of making the bassline only occasionally present really heightens the feeling of rising from the ashes. The verses are somewhat subdued, with only the drums and keyboard being noticeable; but as soon as the pre-chorus steps up, bassist Matt Kean absolutely drowns the track in a wave of sound that feels triumphant and swelling. I believe every lyric of Throne, in no small part due to how powerful the production feels.
I can only say “this is atmosphere done right” so many times. 10/10.
TRACK 4 - TRUE FRIENDS
The choice to open the song with the isolated motif from the chorus is inspired, and serves to amplify every other aspect of the song when it comes in after. The delivery sets up an expectation for angry, crashing vocals, which makes the soft tone on the first verse a pleasant subversion. By this point on the record, though, we should know that won’t last very long. The sound storms in with every intention to make itself known, with a classical influence in the primary instrumental motif. The title line of “true friends stab you in the front” is poignant and even a little amusing, once again carrying the bleak comedy theme of the album. The instrumental cuts out occasionally to emphasize the chorus, and it’s an excellent effect. The breakdown near the end of the second minute is a highlight.
It’s crazy how on any other album all of these songs would be a ten. 8/10.
TRACK 5 - FOLLOW YOU
The more heavy-handed production is at its most noticeable in Follow You, with several elements in the mix that are immediately “not an instrument” sounds. I have nothing but praise for the vocals across the entire album, but this might be one of their best. The layering and tuning feels intimate and personal, but not enough that the alt-rock shouting feels startling or out of place. Much like in Doomed, we get another look at his higher vocal register and how perfectly it fits the alternative rock nu metal fusion of That’s The Spirit. I wouldn’t leave this song to anybody else. The instrumentals all across the record are stellar, but the vocals are in a league of their own.
The lyrics are really cute, too. 9/10.
TRACK 6 - WHAT YOU NEED
I’ve been waiting for this one ever since I started my review. It’s not the star of the album, but man is it fun. The bassline is infectious, the vocals are catchy, and the lead guitar follows them both perfectly. The punchy delivery on the verses has a gnarly contrast with the strong projection in the chorus, and the one-man choir within. In any other song, the verses would be an incredibly strong highlight, but unfortunately one part of this track overshadows every other (masterfully done) aspect. The bridge in What You Need is my second favourite section on the entire album, dwarfed only by a passage two songs from now. The “Hell Yeah” refrain is perfect, and the solo following it is overwhelmingly cool.
Pure adrenaline in here, I wouldn’t want it any other way. 10/10.
TRACK 7 - AVALANCHE
Avalanche is the closest That’s The Spirit comes to an honest confrontation of its themes. There’s no attempt at black comedy, no shred of resigned sarcasm. The screaming vocals feel less powerful, and more desperate. This is the bleakest track on the record, and I’m glad it’s here to balance out the themes. The lyrics are on the repetitive side, which takes away a little from the ranking, but this song needed to be on the album somewhere. The instrumental is still as strong as ever, and despite its serious tone the song doesn’t feel like a downer.
There’s not too much to say on here. The fade-out at the end is a highlight for sure. 7/10
TRACK 8 - RUN
Remember when I said the What You Need bridge is second only to one passage two songs from it? The intro to Run is atmosphere perfected, with “ten thousand voices fill my broken lungs” being one of my favourite lyrics ever put to song. Run is all-encompassing, enveloping, just short of drowning. The sound is full and complete, almost an amalgamation of every individual note as one seething mass. The production is stellar, the composition is stellar, the vocal delivery is stellar. The song is an ode to the desire for teenagers to run away and make their own place in life, with undertones that might point to a darker interpretation.
Highlight of the album. 10/10.
TRACK 9 - DROWN
Again, a masterfully presented intro. The overproduced sound of what seems to be a chanting crowd feels almost eerie and unnatural, but not in an uncomfortable way. Drown exemplifies the sense of isolation and intimacy That’s The Spirit has been balancing all along, and it does so seamlessly. Like Avalanche, Drown feels like an honest confession and a cry for help, free of any sarcasm or humour. The lyrics detail a desire to keep going, but not the energy to make that plausible. “Who will make me fight? [...] You know that I can’t do this on my own." The bridge ends with the same massive crowd the intro opens with, but the final vocals from Oli Sykes are isolated and vulnerable.
Gorgeous production. 10/10
TRACK 10 - BLASPHEMY
This is the most explicit rock on the album. There’s not much in the way of hazy production or vulnerable, quiet vocals. Blasphemy shrugs off the precedent of the record in favour of a massive arena rock sound, easily the most commercial song on the record, with catchy hooks and a simple throughline riff. I don’t think this is a bad thing, though. The short but soaring solo at the end of the second minute is a highlight, and the sound only keeps ramping up with a stomping hook as soon as it moves out of the way. The delivery on this track is spitting and spiteful, and a breath of fresh air if you don’t like the murky sound on the rest of the album
There’s a time and a place for subversion, and I think near the end was a great place to put this. 9/10.
TRACK 11 - OH NO
This is such a perfect closing track. Completely stepping away from the sounds we’ve been acquainted with so far, Oh No has a thrumming synthetic beat in the back of the sound that makes it feel like a party jam. Once again, choral chanting is used in the mix, and it makes Oh No feel epic in scale. The infectious pop hooks and commercially appealing lyrics make the track feel like a true send-off to That’s The Spirit, not a goodbye so much as a celebration that it happened. The song is fundamentally upbeat pop, but the lyrics are still somber and sentimental. This feels very 2015.
...sorry, was that just a saxophone solo? This was going to be a 9, but I guess i can spare another 10/10.
RETROSPECTIVE
Ranking That’s The Spirit was always going to be intrinsically difficult for me, because of how many songs on it I consider to be near-perfect. If you dropped the lowest ranking in here into the middle of most other albums, it would probably get a nine at the lowest. The vocals are a standout performance all the way through, but they never feel like they’re overshadowing the intricate composition behind them. Every song feels deliberately placed to create the most cohesive experience you can get.
Overall, this is one of my 10/10s.

Lonely Eyes - The Front Bottoms. This is one of those songs i always imagine for ships, I have an oc pairing where this is their theme, adore it
Dial Tone - Catch Your Breath. FUCKING BANGER. I love when people sing like they're miserable. "GIVE ME A REASSSONNN!!!" Part of those beautiful series of breakup songs where you sing your heart out
Firestarters - Sawyer Hill. The most beautiful voice ever, low and mellow and good lordmmgmpfpfg. And then the second part hits and he goes from talking-singing to GROWLING. good electric
True Friends - Bring Me The Horizon. This is that brand of emo where the lyrics would appeal to a middle schooler but the song itself would cling to you for years and years. And it's good, dammit
Funeral Derangements - Ice Nine Kills. Yeah I'm recommending even more of them. Listen to my guys scream. [Disclaimer; this one is more metal than the previous recommendations, its mostly growling and screaming and its fire] THIS SONG IS BASED ON Pet Cemetery and they actually got the actor who played the original kid IN their music video its fucking AWESOME. this is also a part of their storyline!! Samo Ljubezen by Sestre - such a fun song, i think i had this stuck in my head for weeks in october

Somebody Told Me by The Killers
Songs für Liam by Kraftklub
Summertime Sadness by Lana Del Rey
Shadow Moses by Bring Me The Horizon - the first bmth song i ever listened to and i NEED to see it live asap, it's so epic and i feel like my soul would actually leave my body. the transition from the verses to the chorus still gives me chills. and bc it also starts with s I'll throw the whole sempiternal album in here

top 10 songs of september
- a late /as usual/ description of my days
1. Who I Am Without You by Aislinn Davis
this is a new find! I got so excited when I stumbled across this sound under one of the tiktok videos I watched. I happened to fall in love within seconds and have been listening to this ever since.
2. My Blood by Ellie Goulding
this is a song I've heard countless times before but somehow the melody, the deep lines and the overall vibe of the song hugged my heart tightly a few weeks prior. I am deeply connected to the vibes and the lyrics overall, so it climbed to the top of this list.
3. Strangers by Kenya Grace
this is another tiktok favourite. I didn't even notice at first how much I'd love the entire song, the chorus was enough for me to fall in love. but the lines
"and then one random night when everything changes
you won’t reply and we’ll go back to strangers"
gave so much depth to the experience...
4. Last Resort Reimagined by Falling In Reverse
I got reminded of this masterpiece in a party of ours. it lasted until 1am and we really only finished the "karaoke" because we had to wake up early the next morning but singing these kinds of songs, having fun and being careless was something I've missed dearly earlier.
5. You Are Enough by Sleeping At Last
I really do need this song nowadays. even though I'm in a happy relationship, all our dreams came true when we moved in together a month before and things are looking great... I think now is the time when it's most important to take time and learn to love ourselves.
6. Parasite Eve by Bring Me The Horizon
in the mornings I have my routine 15 minute walk to work and some days I still need hyping up so I get these songs out to help. I'm still thinking about my bmth concert experience a lot.
7. Another Life by Motionless In White
we had a party at our new house and one of my fac friends busted out this banger. I've cried so much to this song when I was a teenager and now I have such strong feelings. knowing that not only it can get better but that it did get so much better... priceless.
8. Voices In My Head by Falling In Reverse
"the voices in my head keep telling me I'm not okay
it's feeling like a hurricane in my brain
dark clouds, hard times, bad weather
please don't make this last forever"
this is one of the tunes that are real close to my heart. I've first listened a few years ago, when I wasn't the biggest fan anymore (because I loved the band for years before, when I was a teenager) but it's still a real cool song.
9. Eyelids by iamjakehill
an older fav. I don't know how I listened to this again but it's still a banger. I'm loving jake's career and this song makes it obvious why he is so good.
10. Still Waiting by Sum 41
another song from the party at ours, we had fun. reminds me of the summers when we didn't have internet & made fun little videos with our (not really smart) phones. great times, I will never forget how different everything was back then.

Survey #445
“you’ve got a lot of nerve, but not a lot of spine”
Have you ever created a fake internet persona for yourself? No. Do you enjoy going to weddings or showers? What is it that you like or dislike about them? Not... really. They're triggering for me. And I don't use "trigger" lightly. They legitimately, deeply affect me. It's part of the reason I've lost a lot of interest in being a wedding photographer. Is there a person in your life whom you support by showing up for the sports games, concerts, or other performances? This question, uh... sucks. Because I'm that awful aunt that doesn't go to her nephew's t-ball games while everyone else does. It's the heat that does it, but still... it shouldn't. How many video games do you have? A lot. We have a big case of them. Why did you take the last pill you took? My heartburn is especially awful today. Has a girl ever stayed up with you all night? A guy? A girl, uhhh... maybe? Idk. A guy, yeah. Do you think guys look good with makeup? Hell yeah. How long would you wait to become sexually active with someone you’re dating? That would just depend on how quickly we deeply bond in a relationship. I wouldn't go that far before I knew I was in love with them, though, so it definitely wouldn't be quick. Do you enjoy a good debate or prefer keeping the peace? klasd;jkla;jfklwdj I HATE confrontation, so I strongly prefer to keep that peace. Debates rarely ever stay civil, anyway. Can you ever see yourself and your ex back together? One, easily. The other... I wish. But it won't ever happen because I fucked that relationship up way too much. Are you thinking about anything that’s upsetting right now? Yeah. My PTSD is being really bothersome. Would you ever want to ride in a canoe? Yeah, sounds fun and peaceful. So long as I'm not rowing, ha ha. When did you last see an attractive member of your preferred sex? Did you speak to them? Do you think you’ll see them again? Two days ago. Yeah, 'cuz he was my personal trainer. I don't plan on quitting the gym, so I'll probably see him around there now and again. Have you ever tasted baby food? How about pet food? Save for when I was a baby, obviously, no. I once tried a guinea pig yogurt treat, ha ha. How many times have you had your heart broken? Once romantically, twice overall. Actually, no, four. Quite a jump, I know, but Teddy and Jason's mom both dying was nothing short of heartbreaking. Think of the person you fell hardest for. How many people has he/she been in love with, besides you? One, before me. I don't know about since. Find 5 people on your Facebook friends list, whose names begin with K. Who are these people, and how did you meet them? Katherine: an online friend. We met on YouTube. Kim: she's my stepmom. I met her through my dad, obviously. Kelly: a high school friend. We met in art class. Katelynn: was Jason's old friend's former girlfriend. We met through said friend when we all hung out together. Kieley: she's the wife of who I call my "big bro," a close gaming friend. We met through Sam, the aforementioned friend. Sometimes do you wish you lived in a fantasy world? Yeah, who doesn't? What would you say if the ex who hurt you the most told you they hated you? "I don't blame you" or something to that effect. Have any of your friends dated an ex/previous crush of yours? I don't think it's accurate to call her my "friend," but Jason's first girlfriend and I are friends on Facebook. I'd love to get to know her better and actually be *real* friends. One word to describe the last person you kissed? Strong. Has anyone ever cheated on their boyfriend/girlfriend with you? You could say that. Does your hair have layers? No, not anymore. Who was the last person you cried in front of? My mom. Have you done something recently that helped someone else, in any way? I don't know. Which Disney princess do you think is the most beautiful? Why? Probably Jasmine. I just think she's really pretty. If you’ve had a bad experience in a past relationship, did you find that you were scared to get into another relationship, in case the same thing happened again? I'm terrified to this day to start new romantic relationships. I had so many panic attacks about losing Sara when we first started dating. If you were going to buy a present for the person you love/like, what would you generally choose? Absolutely something Frieza-related. If you met the celebrity that you most admire, what would be the first thing you’d say to him/her? Probably just "oh my god, thank you" and start crying lmao. Is there something you generally always ask for help with? I'm sure there's something, yeah. When was the last time you cried? Today. Do you like sausage? Yep. Ever held a newborn animal? Kittens, yes. Do you know anyone with a dual citizenship? Uhhhh maybe? Have you been called a bad influence? Yeah. Like she had ANY room to talk. Do you get stage fright? Yes. Would you be excited or annoyed if your favorite book was being made into a movie? Both of my favorite books are also movies, and they're wonderful. Do you need structure in your life or do you prefer to just go with the flow? I require structure, for sure. Without it, my anxiety goes rampant. Change is something I do not cope with well. Post a picture of you from one year ago. No. Have you ever written a fan letter? If so, who was it to and did you receive a response? No. What trait(s) would you not want your children to inherit from you? My mental illnesses, primarily depression. I have A LOT of reasons for not wanting kids, and my poor genetic makeup is even one of them. I don't want to pass on all the shit I deal with. What is the worst place you’ve woken up? Waking up in a shitty bed at the ER while waiting to be transferred was never one of my favorite things... Are you the type of person who has to study to make good grades or does it just come naturally to you? Aha... I was lucky in that once I heard something in school, it had a tendency to stick. I didn't need to study very much at all - usually. When on YouTube, what types of videos do you mainly watch? Mostly let's plays. What was the last conversation you had with someone about? Sara and I were kinda fangirling over how cute Maieykio and Rumours are, ha ha. Do you have any currency that’s not your native country’s? No. Can you describe your father in one word? Complex. Do you still watch movies intended for children? Yeah. Hell, I probably tend to prefer them. Who is your favorite stand-up comedian? That's living, probably Gabriel Iglesias. What is your strangest phobia? Probably whale sharks. Which part of your state/province do you live in [upper, lower, middle]? I live on the eastern side. Who in your life can you count on the most? My mama. Would you rather eat your pizza cold or hot? It depends on what I'm up for. Is it cute when a boy/girl calls you baby? No, I'm not a fan. Last thing you drank? Pink lemonade. Have you ever thought you were going to marry someone? Sure did. The belief was clearly mutual. But I ruined that. Who are your favorite people to talk to when you’re down? Sara or my mom. Have you ever thought you liked someone, and then found out that you really didn’t? See: Girt. Describe the last dream you had that you can remember. It was actually... really fucked up, so the squeamish beware. I don't remember the details, just the shocking part: a little bird flew into me, and I thought it was a bug, so I crushed it in my hand. Heard and felt the bones break and it was just... ugh. It's nauseating to recall. I'm sick and tired of dreaming of only awful things. Any current family issues? Not any big ones that include everyone. The only "issue" that really exists in my family is how my mom feels like Ashley (my older sister) avoids her, and therefore Mom doesn't see the kids nearly as much as she wants. She feels very overlooked. Whose room of the opposite sex were you in last? When? Uhhh, probably my nephew's? Sometime when I visited my sister's house, idk. The last movie you watched with a friend? Elf, I think. Have you ever played with fire? Uh no, because I'm not keen on being burned. What industry do you want to be a part of when you’re older? Art, in some form. Who do you usually text the most? Since Sara and I started chatting mainly on Discord, definitely my mom. Have you ever been surprised with breakfast in bed? No. Llamas or sheep? Sheep. Have you ever seen anyone famous in the street? No. When do you plan on moving out? Whenever I'm in a long-term, stable, happy, and healthy relationship. I really don't at all think it would be healthy for me to live on my own. What’re you going to be for Halloween? I'd actually love to dress up this year seeing as I've really been feeling the holidays, but the money to like... make a recognizable costume isn't really with us. So I'll ust answer as if I had it, in which case it would be a handmaid from The Handmaid's Tale, but with fake blood splattered over my stomach region. Will you buy a cake for your next birthday? In most cases, admittedly, I get my mom to come kill it. :x I really, really want to get on a level where I can just cup the spider and take it outside. I want a few types of spiders one day (tarantulas, jumping, and velvet), after all, so I really should get used to interacting with them. I know in my gut they're nowhere near as dangerous and scary as your head makes them seem, but it's so instilled in you (most "you"s, anyway) from a young age to stay away from spiders, so it's fighting almost like instinct.
