M. Connor- Writeblr Intro

Hello everyone, I'm M. Connor (he/they) and I am a romance and fantasy author. I have an interest in both clean and erotic romance novels and short stories. I have been known to dabble in horror short stories and in poetry. I write a variety of queer centered stories with a multitude of different identities and pairings.

My purpose for being on Writeblr is to share my work in a low pressure environment, and to read and support the work of others. I always respond to friendly DMs and I try to reply to asks in a timely manner. I am not currently posting my WIPs online except for excerpts and teasers.

My other interests include art (specifically printmaking and paper making, though I'm getting into digital art), Stardew Valley, Skyrim, MXTX's works, and writing and playing music (I play a lot of instruments and sing). Sometimes these intersect with my writing, and I will post about them from time to time.

Some boundaries: I will block minors on sight. My work is not for those under eighteen, please don't interact unless you are of age. I also do not take unsolicited constructive criticism, especially on matters of taste.

Here are a couple of my WIPs and completed projects:

Lunar Lagoon: An erotic romance set in the modern Mediterranean. Lyria, a mermaid, and Amelia, the transfem captain of an antique sailing vessel, must navigate a budding relationship formed from mutual pleasure as it blossoms into something meaningful and deep, while avoiding the ire of Lyria’s overprotective father. Love should be smooth sailing… right?

Crossroads: An erotic romance set in the US. Hazel Abernathy is a struggling witch fighting a losing battle against her local HOA and the crumbling infrastructure of the house her mother left to her when she passed. She’s ready to get back out there and on Valentines Day, meets the sweet and charming Aleksander, and the bombastic and enigmatic Lillian. The two of them, powerful demons in their own right, have their own struggles with mysterious spiritual attacks on the nightclub they own.

Wear a Coat: A horror short story set in the Appalachian mountains, where I come from. What happens when you don’t follow your mama’s advice and go looking for berries without a coat? Maybe you’ll just get cold or maybe you’ll attract unwanted attention from something dwelling deep within the forest…

Alder: This story follows Finlay, a dryad who has been set adrift after a series of questionable choices. This WIP is pretty nebulous at the moment, but has my whole heart. It’s rife with gender shenanigans and magic

Ochre: What happens if a crow is suddenly given a human form by the Morrigan? Let’s find out! Again, another baby WIP in early stages.

Even to the ends of the earth, he’ll do what he can to keep you safe and loved. When he’s in love, oh good luck to any trying to grab his attention. Thoughts are of you, with that blushed far off look, even Claudia and Leonardo are teasing him.

This boy?? This boi! This boyo is so in love he smiles non stop. Always day dreaming of you, reading pieces of poetry or romance literature that reminds him of you. Favorite nicknames are “my love, darling, heart/mon coeur” or personalized ones solely for you. He is every romantic cliche ever and then some! Adorkably a badass! When he’s not being an Assassin, he’s off in the gardens or taking strolls, and you’re always by his side. Arms linked.

On the seas, Shay likes to sit out and spend time with you on the deck. On land, maybe a romantic walk at night. Given how this man left the Colonial Assassins and knew the Templars, there are most definitely secrets that can cause a rift but he claims to do so to protect you. That being said, he’s your hype man! Always guiding you and building you up, since he didn’t have a lot of that from someone he genuinely loves. When he’s away missing you, oh he’s an emotional wreck. Not showing it outwardly, but it’s a storm cloud inside him.

Seeing you shoot off an arrow, the sun gleaming in your eyes and hair, you have never looked more ethereal than in this moment. Your strength and focus never fail to amaze Bayek. He sees you as his equal in all matters, though his kisses say otherwise. Passionate and all consuming of your being. Yet even such a focused man is keen to matters of the heart, and his calls for you when he finds the Order and is taken away for his work.

A traditional man of sorts, Haytham likes to you spoil you in such ways. Fine clothes and some jewelry, along with long walks in town squares to show you off (in his own way). Being the significant other of the leader of Templars means you are privy to secrets, but Haytham has his reasons (at least he likes to think so). Aside from that, he adores your wit and humor and when away, likes to imagine the fun banter you two would have. He would absolutely be the type to want to marry you, falling into a peaceful domestic routine of sorts.

A,M,U,N,E,T (Aya)

Before and after becoming a Hidden One, Aya admired your presence. You were there for her through the worst of times and when she founded the Assassin’s with Bayek. Being her spouse, co-founder, fellow partner in crime means you have a leader of a wife who also enjoys a good time. She adores you, and you her, calling each other “my love” or “goddess”. Traveling together adds a sense of thrill and excitement in new places, although if you’re ever homesick, Aya/Amunet wants you to share that with her.

Life on the high seas can be rambunctious but Edward can count on your leadership. Sometimes. When you’re not getting into the crew’s shenanigans. Your fun-serious side, with a dash of ruthlessness, is one of the many becoming qualities he admires in you. When you’re not cracking jokes or death defying stunts/schemes, Kenway does have a softer side to him. Going out of his way to talk to you, or when you sees you off in a distance, daydreams how you’re buying his favorite rum for him as a gift or protecting him. Do you think of him as much as he does you? Or do you remember the time he covered you with a blanket one cold night?

J,A,C,O,B

You had been best friends with Jacob, but even the laughs and glances couldn’t fill the you-shaped hole in his heart. When you finally got together, there was never a shortage of admiration on his part about all that he admires about you, including your fun side. That being said, he’s a passionate man who is not shy about making it known how he feels about you, despite Evie’s teasing, and if a Rook tries to get chummy with you they find out real fast! Maybe laying it on a bit thick with the compliments but you know he’s genuine. He likes to scale the rooftops with you to get the best views, especially at sunset. If you ever have nightmares/panic attacks, Jacob knows what that feels like and he’s more than willing to help you through it.

Connor didn’t expect to fall in love after trying to rebuild, but you were a welcomed exception in his life. When he first started catching feelings, he thought it was subtle until your eyes met his and he turned away with a blush creeping on his cheeks. He may not be the most traditional romantic but once you realize what he’s doing, you’re touched by how sweet he is. Once you’re together, Connor’s little nicknames for you are along the lines of “love, dove” or maybe something floral. If you ever have nightmares/panic attacks, that soothing voice calms you down as he holds you close.

Unlike her twin, Evie likes to think she was refined and focused until she met you. Then her more carefree, free-spirited fluoridated when she spent more time with you. Jacob likes to tease that you’re a “bad influence”. She sees you as her equal in every way and comes to realize that even in the most trying times, she can let her walls down for you. She values you, in all ways a loving significant other can: your opinions, your ideas, your wants.

Kassandra is a woman who’s naturally curious and takes an interest your activities/hobbies, be it pottery or sword sparring. Her kisses are heated, gripping to you as if you’re her tether. She imagines a simple life with you at times, living out the rest of your years by the beach. If there’s anything you have set your sights on, your Amazonian love is in your corner 1000%. Romance is not her strongest suit, but you know she tries and that’s all that matters. I don’t know Ancient Greek dialect, but I’d imagine nicknames would be something like “sweetie” or “darling”.

Alexios did not expect to have a family again (Kassandra and his mother), let alone the heart of you. He respects and values you as his equal, and all that you do. He enjoys hunting, sailing and some sparring with you, and encourages you if you want to improve yourself. After settling down, your presence inspires him to be more at peace. He doesn’t have to be closed off or hesitant or the simplest actions. When he confessed, Alexios gripped tightly onto you, pouring every ounce of his soul into words. You gladly accept, and soon are pulled close to him in the tightest hug and sweetest kiss. After that, you could be doing the most mundane thing and Alexios looks at you as if you’re Queen of Olympus itself.

Eivor admires you, loves you, their beloved and equal in every way. An inspiration to fight to see tomorrow with you. Not “showy” with their emotions, or the most blatantly romantic, Eivor still has those moments where they want to be near you at every moment. Making sure you’re well fed, taken care of, or warm during the harsh winters. You’re a much valued and loved person in Eivor’s life, someone worth protecting amidst this dangerous lifestyle.

Though he won’t outright admit it, Altair admires your skill as a fellow assassin in training (mostly as an excuse to be near you). As long as Maria and Malik don’t rib him that the arrogant “novice” has finally been bested. If anything, it indirectly inspires him to do better/push himself to which you tease him relentlessly, but he’ll gladly take it since it’s you. When he finally confessed to you, the tense pause almost killed him (fearing you’d say no) only to return your hug ten fold in an iron grip. Cupping the back of your head. In the younger years, you two daredevils were always seeking out the highs of being an Assassin but mellow out with age. Still, that romance never dies with affectionate banter and nicknames, and gentle touches.

Aveline enjoys shopping with you or even taking (much needed) long walks with you. She sees you as her equal, and values your opinion, be it for both Assassin and other non-related matters. She’s faced betrayal and heartache but you’re an inspiration that there’s always a better tomorrow, no matter how small some victories may be. You confessed to her one night, and it was one of the happiest moments in Aveline’s life, the day you called her “my rose”. One of the loveliest, genuine aspects of her life, Aveline treasures her life with you.

Reasons why I love it: Okay, every word of this fic is pure, sensual gold. Not only is the mental image of what's going on just about the hottest thing I've ever read, but the commentary from the rest of the Avengers as it's happening is fucking hilarious. I hope you give this one a shot, because it's amazing, and I love it a disproportionate amount.

The depth of this fic is really all in the details, and there are so many one-liners that made me stop and think, 'holy shit, that's genius'. I love this fic so much, and I hope you go and check it out for yourself, because it deserves all the love it can get!

Summary: In which Steve Rogers has been in love with Natasha Stark for years, and managed to keep it a secret for almost just as long. Almost.

Reasons why I love it: Oh Clint, you and your blabbering mouth. I love the way the 'dreaded conversation' between Steve and Tasha flows, how they come to the worst possible conclusions before finally arriving at the realization that their feelings are returned. It's lovely stuff, and I bet you'll enjoy it just as much as I did, so go ahead and read it!

Summary: After her longest episode of insomnia yet, Toni falls asleep draped against Steve and has a dirty dream that her boyfriend Bucky is all too happy to take advantage of.

Reasons why I love it: Goddamn, this fic is amazing. Steve's desperate attempts to hold out, Bucky's enthusiastic approval, Toni's oblivious participation, it's all so good. The smut is hot as hell, and the underlying relationship dynamics are so much fun to explore. I love this fic so much, and I bet you will too!

Pairing: Steve/Tony Rating: T Words: 8,209 Tags: Dimensional Travel, Relationship Advice, Mutual Pining

Summary: One day, a portal opens up in the middle of Toni's workshop, leaving behind two men who apparently are them, Captain America and Iron Maiden, well, Man, from another universe. But that's not the only thing that Steph finds bizarre. What's also bizarre is that Captain America and Iron Man are together. Together in a relationship. And apparently somehow, they're not the only pair. (Or the five Steves who convince Steph to confess her feelings to Toni and the one Steve she has to convince to confess to his own.)

Reasons why I love it: Multiverse shenanigans are the best. Steph helping Steve after being encouraged by all the other Steves to do the same is so sweet. And I adore the fact that Stony love is a constant across all the different universes. Love the nod to the more minor canon iterations of them too. This fic is lovely, and I highly suggest you read it!

any romance novel recs with similar vibes to My Lady Jane? love that show!

Yeah for sure!

My immediate recommendation is Alexis Hall, Alexis Hall, Alexis Hall. Their books are extremely witty, often combine historical romance with magic, and emphasize both the love AND the whimsy.

In particular, his "Something" series, which includes:

Something Fabulous--m/m roadtrip romance in which a demisexual virginal uptight duke ends up having to hunt down his fiancee, alongside her flamboyant and sparkly twin brother, when he botches his proposal; shenanigans, duels, and "oh shit I'm falling in love with this ridiculous person" ensue

Something Spectacular--nb/nb romance in which genderfluid Peggy (who uses she/her pronouns) is enlisted, reluctantly, to help her ex seduce a famously (and famously sexy) castrato soprano, Orfeo. Orfeo, however, is much more immediately into Peggy. It's kind of like an 1800s celebrity romance, because Orfeo is very admired and everyone wants them, and once you know what makes them famous throughout Europe (... aside from their singing voice) it... makes a lot of sense. Also, there's a scene in which an all-male poetry reading turns into... something else... after Orfeo and Peggy ask some simple QUESTIONS. My favorite Alexis Hall book.

Something Extraordinary--Out 12/17, the finisher, in which a gay nobleman and his grayromantic (or aromantic? It's a bit uncertain) female best friend run off to Greta Green to marry each other, and learn that there's a lot more to being soulmates than straightforward attraction. This is like... a queerplatonic romance novel, and it's very cutting edge imo, and it explores what makes... LOVE.... in such a unique way.

Her Mortal Follies books (Mortal Follies is out, Confounding Oaths comes out on 8/20) are also super good, but closed door(ish for the first one, definitely for the second). They're historical and Jane Austen-y, but with a dose of fairy magic and whimsy and mysticism. The first one is f/f, the second m/m.

DEFINITELY read India Holton. Her Dangerous Damsels trilogy is completed, and focuses on this Victorian setting with witches and lady thieves and pirates in flying ships and SPIES. The narration reminds me of MLJ, they're hilarious, and you get these ridiculous assassination attempts and fights and wry hookups. I just finished her newest book, The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love, which is also great and involves hunting down MAGICAL BIRDS. While being rivals to lovers.

This type of silly fun fantasy romance thing is definitely going to be more common in the coming years, imo, because I would also say that you should look out for This Will Be Fun by E.B. Asher, which is a lighthearted fantasy romance with strong D&D vibes about a group of friends who saved the world but lost their leader in the process years ago, and now have been summoned to attend the queen's wedding. More world saving and lots of second chance romance ensues. Two couples, an m/f romance in which the hero is a former mercenary turned golden boy celeb who started an eagle rescue, and a possibly alcoholic grouchy divorcee lady; and an f/f romance starring a shut-in magic user and the cheery assassin she used to hook up with even though they were enemies at the time.

Okay, hear me out! I think you and Saitama would get along really well. You both dislike stagnation, it’s just that Saitama has found himself in a situation where that’s the one constant in his life.

With all your hobbies, Saitama will dedicate himself to learning everything he can about all of them. That way, no matter what you’re doing or talking about, he knows enough to provide constructive comments.

He is also better able to appreciate the work that goes into all of your hobbies this way.

Please get him into D&D. Having a weak character is a nice change for him and I think he would enjoy the escapism of the game. Just be careful he doesn’t level up too fast…

Your positivity is a nice change of pace for Saitama. He’s surrounded by angsty and serious people all the time so you’re a nice break away from all that.

Ooooh, GOOD QUESTION

Alexis Hall is always one of my go-to funny writers. He's just so fucking naturally hilarious. If you're in the mood for true "oh my god this is hilarious and largely lighthearted" funny, I would go for Something Fabulous and then Something Spectacular, his two historical romcoms. (A Lady for a Duke is also historical romance, and it is quite funny, but it's not really a romcom imo so much as it is a true sweeping romance.) I laughed out loud with both of them, and though they standalone, I think they're best read in order. (Spectacular is my favorite of the two. It does have a bit more emotionality than Fabulous, but there's also a scene where the leads accidentally incite a gay orgy at a poetry slam, so.) They're super irreverent and so, so good.

Julie Anne Long writes some very funny books. Her Palace of Rogues series is consistently funny, and though it does have some sadder aspects, After Dark with the Duke is overall very lighthearted and made me laugh out loud a couple times lol. The entire series is set in this boarding house where everyone is kinda zany and crazy and I have a GREAT time with it.

The Queer Principles of Kit Webb by Cat Sebastian is a m/m historical highwayman/dandy book that had me laughing quite a bit. Especially because when our heroes have a meet cute, one of them (the dandy, Percy) is internally like "OH YEAH. HE WANTS TO FUCK ME. HE'S CHECKING OUT MY ANKLES LIKE CRAZY". To be fair, he's right.

Ooh, The Secret Lives of Country Gentlemen by KJ Charles! Like, there are some stakes, but KJ is also frankly hilarious. Another m/m historical about a smuggler and a guy who accidentally inherited a baronetcy or whatever trying his Best. Part of why I love this one is because some of the humor is in like... the sex. They have a lot of snarkery and fun while fucking. MORE OF THAT PLS.

Sierra Simone and Julie Murphy's Christmas Notch romcoms are fucking hilarious and STUPID HOT. Yes, they have Christmas vibes, but for the most part they often don't take place around Christmas--they're about people filming Christmas movies, lol. I had to sit these books down a couple of times because it was just TOO funny.

Vivienne Lorret writes a really funny book, but Never Seduce a Duke is by far the zaniest one I've read by her. Arthurian cookbook shenanigans! Secret baby! The hero almost coming in his pants while watching the heroine eat pastries.

Speaking of, Grace Callaway is also very funny, but her books do also tend to have darker notes throughout. So I'm not sure about recommending her. But if you are okay with a bit of darkness, I would say try Olivia and The Masked Duke. It's extremely funny to me. But it also has like. Murder and stuff lol.

Talia Hibbert is really funny, though Act Your Age, Eve Brown is by far the funniest to me. While also being super sexy? I mean, he fucks her with a sparkly purple dildo at one point.

Omg! Annika Martin's Billionaires of Manhattan books are HILARIOUS but especially The Billionaire's Wake-Up-Call-Girl, which is basically Phone Sex with a Bit o' Degradation for the hero. I also really loved The Billionaire's Fake Fiancee, though I'll admit that part of why the humor worked so much for me is that it's kind of a send-up to daytime soap operas, and daytime soaps are integral to my psyche.
