Peer to Peer Lending Sector in UK
Peer to Peer Lending Sector in UK
(No Ratings Yet) Loading...
– Peer to Peer lending has 7 important differences in the UK compared the US. Otherwise, it is similar and growing.
– Funding Circle, Zopa and Ratesetter are the 3 major peer to peer lending platforms in UK. Their characteristics are listed and discussed.
– UK government had made it easier for investors and the industry is pushing for pension funds to accept it as an asset class. This would open up exponential growth for the industry.
– Public listing of this sector has started to allow international investors to enter the UK market with strong growth potential.
Introduction
In the previous article, we introduced the marketplace lending space in the United States. We saw how Lending Club and Prosper are replacing the role of banks and the method which they matched lenders and borrowers. In this article, we will turn our focus to the United Kingdom. The UK is another matured country for marketplace lending, commonly known as Peer to Peer lending there.
Source: Telegraph
As you can see in the photo above, peers are people with high status in society. Hence it is a desirable and honourable to call this marketplace lending as peer to peer lending in the UK.
Just like how Singtel, Starhub and M1 dominates the telecommunication sector in Singapore, Funding Circle, Zopa and Ratesetter dominates the peer to peer lending sector in the UK. These UK platforms are limited to UK residents to be either lenders or borrowers. The notable exception is Funding Circle which has a US based entity.
Similarities and Differences in the US and UK
Peer to Peer lending platforms are regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority since 1st April 2014. In the UK, these platform market themselves as an alternative to bank’s savings account. As a result, they abstain from the term ‘investors’ which is prevalent in the US and prefer to use the term ‘lenders’ instead. However regulations obliged these platforms to disclose that such ‘deposits’ are not subjected to the $85,000 deposit insurance under the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
Perhaps there are cultural differences in the UK, these platforms had to emphasize the safety of these investments to a population that are fed up with low savings interest rates but yearn for higher returns. Consequently, there are 6 major differences in the UK system as compared to the US:
Average interest rates are lower at 5% instead of 9% as seen in the US and minimum lending starts at 10 pounds (Zopa and Ratesetter) instead of 25 USD.
Each platform had to form its own provision fund against default. This is a business and not a regulatory imperative. This is one reason that returns are lower in the UK. In the US, the returns are higher but lenders absorb the full losses of default.
Automatic diversification of loans through pooling and ‘savings products’ are classified according to time frame (like fixed deposits without the insurance). Pooling is an advantage.
While the US investor would require USD$10,000 to diversify his loans properly by investing USD$25 in 400 loans, the UK investor would only require 10 pounds.
The exception is Funding Circle and you would need to use their AutoBid to diversify with minimum of 20 pounds and preferably across 100 businesses.
Strong emphasis on the ability to withdraw funds as long as there are new lenders (liquidity) after paying for fees and discount if interest rates rose. In the US, there are such secondary markets but they are not the focus.
Fully funded insolvency plan in the event that these platforms were to go bankrupt as part of regulatory requirements.
Trade body, Peer to Peer Finance Association formed to protect industry’s reputation by encouraging high minimum standards. For example, it has recently passed a directive to its members that all investors should be treated equally. Institutional investors should not be allowed to cherry pick the best loans first at the expense of retail investors.
The US has a much larger market for peer to peer lending and it loan out $12 billion in 2014 compared to $2.3 billion for the UK.
Source: Morgan Stanley
After looking at the differences, we move on to the similarities between the UK and the US. The motivation that drove borrowers to marketplace lending is simply because they can get a lower interest rates when compared to bank’s rate. They are there to refinance their existing loans for more favourable rates. For lenders, they can also get higher interest rate for undertaking modest risk.
Borrowers approach these platforms for small personal loans as seen below.
Source: Zopa
One of the appeal of lending on these platforms is that lenders know that they are lending to real people. This is seen in the personal stories behind the loan.
On the other hand, businesses borrow for the following reasons:
Source: Funding Circle
These peer to peer loans have been so popular that 77% of small businesses will approach Funding Circle first before they reach out to banks in 2013. Where banks would take 2 weeks to decide on the loan, these platforms would just take 2 days and the borrowing costs are much lower.
Features
After we have seen the similarities and differences between the US and UK system, it is time for us to dig into the characteristics of these 3 different leading platforms in the UK.
Funding Circle Zopa Ratesetter Year of Establishment 2010 2005 2010 Target Borrowers Business Loans Personal Loans Personal & Business Loans Loan Origination Amount (Pounds) $956 million $1.19 billion $912 million Loan Amount (Pounds) $5,000 to $1 million $1,000 – $25,000 Personal: $1000 to $25,000 Business: $25,000 to $1 million Loan Period 6 months to 5 years 1- 5 years 6 months to 5 years Provision Fund Not Applicable Safeguard ($11M, 120% cover) Provision Fund ($16M, 151% cover) 5 Year Loan Interest Rates 7.20% 5% 5.90% Fees 1% annual fee + 0.25% if you sell a loan 1% Annual Fee of Loan Lender : 0% Borrower : Late Fees Spread in Rates (Implied) Active Lenders 44818 59000 28832 Bank Barclays RBS Barclays Government Lending (Pounds) (British Business Bank) $60 million Not Applicable $10 million
Of these 3 leading platforms, Ratesetter is the only platform that does both personal and business loans. For companies that are offering business loans, they would receive investment from the British Business Bank as part of the government’s imperative to support local businesses.
Zopa is the oldest platform and it is focused on personal loans. While its returns and fees might lose out to Ratesetter, it has the largest number of active lenders. This means that existing lenders have higher liquidity when they wish to exit the loan early. This is one edge that Zopa has over other platforms. This edge is slowing eroding as both Funding Circle and Ratesetter are catching up in terms of loan origination.
Funding Circle is the most international of these 3 platforms with presence in 5 countries. Unique among these 3 platforms is the fact that it has no provision fund but it makes up with higher interest rates. It should be noted that Singapore’s sovereign fund, Temasek invested $30 million pounds alongside Blackrock in April 2015. They valued Funding Circle at over $1 billion with this deal.
All three have rigorous credit underwriting procedures to protect their reputation and their lenders. Zopa, Ratesetter and Funding Circle use the services of leading credit reporting agencies such as Experian, Equifax and Callcredit as part of the credit assessment. Based on the riskiness of the borrower, they are assigned the appropriate interest rates or rejected.
New Updates
A new update for the UK marketplace lending is the new policy that was recently announced by the Chancellor of Exchequer (UK’s Finance Minister) George Osborne would be the extension of Innovative Finance Individual Savings Account to peer to peer loans from 06 April 2016 onwards. The FCA is currently asking for public consultation before its eventual implementation.
This extension would allow investors to save on taxes and set the stage for the eventual inclusion of P2P lending as a debt asset class. This is what Zopa is actively pushing for in its blog to open up a new major market of investors. If institutional pension funds were to accept these loans as an asset, there will be another wave of exponential growth for the industry.
Conclusion
Peer to Peer lending industry is maturing in the UK and much of the regulations are in place to provide for the safety of borrowers and investors. Regulations are also changing to accept this as an asset class of its own. It is clear that the model of cutting out banks as the middleman are widely accepted by both the borrowers and lenders.
The UK market is much smaller than the US market and there are much room for growth. While overseas investors are still barred from investing in the UK market, Funding Circle has made it easier for foreign investor by being the first platform to float an investment trust on the London Stock Exchange called Funding Circle SME Income Fund. This small $150 million aims to provide 7% dividends and it is open to institutional investors.
This is likely to be the tip of the iceberg and Ratesetter has plans to be publicly listed following the footstep of Lending Club. This will create a fortune for its founders and also allow the global public to ride on the rising wave of P2P lending in the UK. That is all for the overview of the UK marketplace lending and thanks for reading.

4 travelling hacks you need for small budget travellers
Tumblr media
If you think that travelling is expensive, you are not alone. Most people have the same perception as you. But is that really true? In reality, the cost of your travel depends on how you travel and how many travelling hacks you have in your pocket.
Here are four travelling hacks that will make travel much less expensive than you think, especially for small budget travellers.

1. Go cashless with DBS multi-currency account
Pickpocketing is one of the most annoying and frustrating things that can happen to you while you are overseas. It depletes your travelling budget, which is already small, to begin with! Apart from doing all the necessary preventive measures like anti-theft crossbody backpacks and travel pouches, limiting the cash you have on hand can also help. Instead of lugging so much cash around (especially if you travel for a long period), why not go cashless?
DBS Multi-Currency account allows you to keep foreign currencies in your bank account. You can transact overseas directly in the relevant foreign currency without being exposed to conversion or administrative fees. You can also withdraw cash from overseas ATM, albeit at a cost of S$5 per withdrawal. DBS Multi-Currency account currently allows you to transact in 11 foreign currencies: Australia Dollar, Canadian Dollar, Euro, Hong Kong Dollar, Japanese Yen, New Zealand Dollar, Norwegian Kroner, Sterling Pound, Swedish Kroner, Thai Baht and US Dollar.
If you are planning to go cashless with DBS Multi-Currency account, one additional hack you need to know is to bring an additional card that links to the DBS Multi-Currency account. In the event that you really get pickpocketed, you can still fall back on your backup card. But, trust us, it is much easier to protect one card than a wade of cash.

2. Learn about the cities and culture with free walking tours
For some of us, travelling is more than just a time to relax. It is also a time to learn about the cities, its people and its culture. Often, we do not have the luxury of time to fully appreciate the city for its uniqueness. If you want to learn about the cities’ people and culture within a short period of time, free walking tours are your best bet.
Tumblr media
Source: Pexels
Free walking tours bring you on an expedited journey across the city’s rich culture and history. For half a day, you get to learn about most of the major events that happened to the city. It is also a good time to burn off some calories so that you can enjoy local cuisine at night.
Most of these walking tours are conducted by local experts who live in and love the city. They operate on tips only, which means that you can decide how much you want to give. While you can walk away from the tour for free, it is good courtesy to give a small token to the guide to appreciate his/her efforts. We advocate everyone to tip 5-10 dollars in the local currency depending on how much you have enjoyed the tour. Even with the tip, it is still well within your budget!
Oh, and did we mention that most cities also have free pub crawls? (P.S. You might need to pay for your own alcohol though)

3. Avoid roaming charges with overseas SIM card
Admit it, you NEED the internet to survive overseas. From checking how to reach your next destination on Google maps to finding the best food places, the internet is indispensable for travellers. In this day and age, we hardly know of anyone who still uses travel guidebooks for travel (except for the travel purists). However, roaming charges can be expensive, regardless of which telco you are tied to.
Instead, we recommend getting an overseas SIM card that allows you to surf the internet without any cost worries. These SIM cards are typically much more cost efficient, i.e. lower cost per GB of data. If you are only travelling to a single country, you can consider getting one at the airport. But if you want to save even more, get it from the local 7-11 or convenience store. It is MUCH CHEAPER than the airport’s vending machines.
If you are travelling to different places, there are also SIM cards that allow you to connect to the internet in multiple countries. SIM cards for the Europe and Asia region are pretty popular, which you can find easily on Qoo10, Klook or iShopChangi.
Tumblr media
Source: iShopChangi.com
For some countries, it also makes sense (and is easier) to buy a prepaid SIM card from one of the local telcos in Singapore. We like M1’s Data Passport and Starhub’s Happy Roam plans for their convenience and affordability.

4. Stay at Airbnbs where you can cook
Airbnbs are good choices if you are looking for a cheaper alternative to hotels. But there’s one other thing that Airbnb offers: The option to cook. Eating out can be an expensive affair, especially in countries or cities where the cost of living is higher than in Singapore (think Europe). For budget travellers, one way to save is to cook your own food. If you buy raw ingredients from the supermarket, it costs 40-50% less than eating out.
Tumblr media

Bonus: Another tip that will help you save money is to scan supermarkets for soon-to-expire items. Many items are being sold at a discount if the expiry date is near. Since you are going to consume it on the day, you can get them for half the cost (or even lower)!
What other travel hacks do you think has worked well for you? Let us know!

Apple Pay’s 300 to 600+ dollars up to 900 to Foxconn employees meanwhile in the US they pay their apple store employees like 15 per hour or 60k probably per year and they don’t even do data recovery and then if somehow a broken connector is loose because they somehow make one shorter on their displays they say they want like 2k to fix the display even tho all it would take would be for apple to make adapters that go from one place to the other... and they send the repair units to third parties in like Singapore where if somehow the product is refurbished and sold you don’t get it back and they make you buy a new one instead... and then because it’s in Singapore when you sign the repair contract you’re not even guaranteed your money back bc it goes through the third parties banks in their areas and not through Apple’s huge cash pile in the US or Ireland. I think it’s pretty obvious nobody likes apple’s policies on third party repair shops, but when apple sends their own products to ppl that can’t even use US banking systems, and they pay their factory workers peanuts it really puts in perspective how shitty Apple is to its users and employees and just bc you can sidestep corporate doesn’t mean I don’t watch what they do bc I already know most of the things they can make and develop. The reason I chose not to do anything is because I don’t believe in putting ppl to work on devices that are locked down and employees are told they can’t do data recovery or they’re fired and they delete that ppl can do it or they’re fired, or have secrecy on anything, who the fuck cares what apple says I run Linux and Gabe Newell was the first person I worked for... not shitty Steve Jobs. And just because Linux can do more than windows and Mac doesn’t mean I hate apple I just think there are categories for software... apple is second to Fedora by Red Hat and Valve. Microsoft is not even on my list of good software developers, don’t think they ever were, they copied the blur off iOS and that came from the dynamism of Jony Ive and work off the jailbreak community. The App Store wasn’t even original Cydia developed it before apple did, and even Scott forstall said he asked Pandora to put an app on it before the App Store existed. Ppl are just pissed I bought an iPad instead of building a company, build it yourself I already know what I like and how it works... I don’t need to destroy ppls lives because of it.. shitty 300 salary Foxconn employees cause of clown management. pay your factory employees more assholes I didn’t work my ass off so you could buy back stocks and you know the product pipeline doesn’t end till like 2030 bc you’re withholding IR blaster charging tech, still haven’t even made a single fiber optic motherboard and haven’t even built the rest of the magnapower “MagSafe” ecosystem not even the HomePod mini has wireless charging... but my speaker does.. pfft as if I would ever assist assholes that steal from factory workers and never paid wave industries for any of the rally work I do. Apple is shit, doesn’t matter if m1 makes it Gabe Newell already beat them to the punch. And also I am glad I don’t have an exploding ego like most ceos on the internet nobody fucking likes Elon musk. Apple stock could have been at 3 trillion already if all the dumb things management does would stop being so damn lousy... all those clown commercials about turtles and privacy were awful and when I was assisting Tim with the marketing they were actually good and Jony Ive still worked there... I mean Jony Ive was the only thing keeping ppl there.. I feel like I’ve quit like 50 times already over management’s egos I’m pretty sure I played rage against the machine so many times that it’s become a soft tune to me... what kinda whack management runs apple damn Steve Jobs employees are shitty as hell.

M1 users hit by Internet, fixed voice service outage, Tech News & Top Stories
Tumblr media
M1 users around Singapore were hit by a fibre broadband outage yesterday that lasted more than four hours for some, the third such disruption to the telco’s services this year. Fixed voice services were also affected.
The outage was first reported by M1 on its Facebook page at 6.40pm, although comments from affected users in areas such as Woodlands, Punggol and Jurong West began to surface about an hour earlier. The telco said in an update at 10pm that all affected services had been fully restored.
Its post had drawn more than 6,400 comments by then.
“M1 users affected by this disruption will be offered a one-time waiver on their excess mobile data usage in their next M1 bill,” said the telco, which apologised for the inconvenience caused.
According to the Downdetector website, which logs Internet outages, M1 started having problems at around 5.50pm, before complaints spiked at 6.45pm, with around 9,800 reports.
M1 said its fibre and fixed voice services were disrupted at 6.30pm, affecting users in some parts of Singapore.
Sembawang resident Khairul Anwar Sayali, 34, said his broadband connection went down at 6.15pm when he was watching Netflix. It was restored about two hours later.
“I wasn’t badly affected, but some of my friends were in Zoom meetings for work or doing assignments, and it might not have looked good for them to (lose their) connections,” said Mr Khairul, who works in estate management.
“But nobody wants this to happen, and I’m sure the engineers and everyone involved were trying their best to resolve the issue.”
Taman Jurong resident Petrus Tan, 59, was in the middle of an online meeting at 6.15pm when his connection was cut off.
His smart home appliances, such as an air purifier and robot vacuum cleaner which are controlled by apps that require a network connection, also could not be operated.
Despite the hiccup, Mr Tan, who works in manufacturing, said he has no plans to switch telcos. “I have been using M1 since 1997, and I will still stay with them as the price is cheaper. Singtel and StarHub have also had such incidents before.”
On social platforms like Reddit, some M1 users reported that their connections were restored between 7.15pm and 8pm.
The latest incident follows two disruptions during Singapore’s circuit breaker period that lasted for almost 30 hours collectively from May 12 to 13. The first was due to a corrupted profile database in the telco’s broadband network gateway, while the second was caused by a software fault that occurred in its network equipment.
M1 was fined $400,000 by the Infocomm Media Development Authority in September for those service disruptions.

Marvel’s AVENGERS S.T.A.T.I.O.N.
Calling all the Marvel fans out there~! That’s right! The Marvel Avengers Station exhibition has been in Singapore since last Dec, and I only visited when it’s about to close, the last week before it closes in fact. Went with Hadz, since she’s prob the only Marvel fan I know in Singapore. I think Collette back in Newcastle would have loved this. But anyways, me and Hadz went, and the verdict was – well, find out at the end of this post!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It costed S$25 for local adults, and because my mobile service provider is M1, we both got 15% off! That’s well nice!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hulk greeting us before entering.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we struggled for a good 10 minutes before entering the exhibition mainly because they required us to download this app which will allow us to enjoy the exhibition more, it was like optional so we didn’t want to download but the staff was very persuasive so we downloaded it, which in the end proved to be nothing useful. The app itself was just complicated and not much instruction were given, so nope, not great.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ I never expect Hulk to be this big you know.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ A bunch of ants leading us to Antman! I’ve gotta say this is one of the best bit from the exhibition – cute!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ Chitauri from Avengers
Tumblr media
^ Dark elf from Thor
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
^ Looks like I am not worthy enough for Mjolnir
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so that marks the end of exhibition experience! Overall it was underwhelming, the amount you paid and what you get was just not impressive. There wasn’t really lots of things to look at, or play around with. The app they “require” us to download is just plain silly (I’d use the word stupid but I’m trying to be kind here). We only took around one hour to finish everything? So yeah, really not very happy or impressed, expected a lot more. But oh wells! Sometimes you don’t get what you paid for and that’s life. I hope the exhibition will be much better next time round! *fingers crossed*
Tumblr media
Anyway, thanks Hadz for being spontaneous and agreed to visit the exhibition with me! Here’s the more fun (and worthy) adventures ahead aye!  xx

Comparison between two online music streaming apps and their relation with Usability and UX goals
For many of us, the days of buying CDs and vinyl records are over. Vinyl records might have made a comeback among modern days hippies and audiophiles, but music streaming platform provides us the access to millions of songs available online for a monthly subscription fee so we don’t have to buy the physical copies anymore. It is space-saving and convenient at a minimum cost.
In this post, we will make a comparison between two of the most commonly used music streaming platforms to date. We will be discussing on the usability and user experience goals that these applications have or have not achieved.
The Good: Spotify
Tumblr media
Spotify is the most highly used music streaming service. It is available in free, ad-based version where advertisement will be played every once in a while, or you can go ad-free with just S$9.99 per month and there is a family plan that includes support for up to six family accounts for just S$14.99 per month.
#1: Effectiveness: Does it do what it is supposed to do?
Tumblr media
Spotify has achieved its goal to provide music for everyone. Users can enjoy three months of free trial when they first sign up for a Spotify account. Even if users are not subscribing for the ad-free version, music are still available across all major platforms including iOS, Android, any preferred web browsers and desktop application.
#2: Efficiency: Is it productive to users?
Spotify is the most efficient tool in helping its users to organise their music playlists across all devices. Users can create and add musics to their playlists, in any ways they would like to organise their songs. There are no limitations in playlists creation from its catalogs of over 40 millions songs. Its “Shuffle Play” button provides its users the freedom to shuffle play music in any form they preferred whether it is by genres, artists, albums, or playlists. Users can also easily order the music in their preferred sequence, delete music from playlists, or loop music or playlist by simple swiping actions or one-click-for-all buttons.
Tumblr media
As an additional feature, Users have the ability to select which device to play their music from as long as the account is log in from the devices’ Spotify application. This has increase its efficiency value where users are able to switch between devices without having to stop their music or reselect the last played music.
#3: Safety: Does it prevents users from making error?
Spotify’s hierarchical breadcrumb navigation methods prevents users from losing track of which page they are on by simply navigating using the back and forth button on the title bar of the application. Its uniform user interface design across all devices and platforms also boost its users’ confidence when using Spotify on different devices to listen to music.
#4: Utility: Does it includes the appropriate functions?
The best usability goal that Spotify has achieve is its utility. It has not only equipped with the basic required functions of a music player: Play, Stop, Previous, Next, Shuffle or Loop on the music bar. It is also an exceptionally great tool for its users to explore and organize their music library. Apart for its wide variety of music catalogs, Spotify enable its users to see their friends’ music activities, adjust music quality, and the ability for users to listen to music offline without internet connection. Its additional features have enhanced its user experience by providing useful functions that are highly appropriate and applicable to their user.
Tumblr media
Spotify’s playback interface
#5: Learnability: How easy can it be learn to use?
Spotify’s user interface is simple and easy to learn and understand. One example is it has utilizes the same “Play” button across most pages. Despite looking the same, the buttons are able to perform different tasks.
On a playlist page: Shuffle play music in playlist
Tumblr media
On an artist’s page: Shuffle play music of the artist
Tumblr media
On an album’s page: Shuffle play music of the album
Tumblr media
#6: Memorability: How easy is it to remember how to use it?
Thanks to it well-designed and simple user interface, it is relatively easy and simple for users to learn and remember how to use the application. It has minimize the number of tasks in achieving a certain action by the minimal use of buttons in the interface. Spotify presents its hierarchical views by setting clickable links on most of its components. For example, users can link from a playlist to an artist or an album just by clicking on the artist or album name, or navigate to its album simply by right-clicking and select from its drop-down selection panel. This design has minimize the steps a user needs to perform when searching for a specific music as there is no need for users to memorize the steps, simply hover over.
UX Goals Achieved: Valuable, Exhaustive Discovery, Enjoyable
Next up... The Bad: YouTube Music
Tumblr media
YouTube Music is a music streaming application developed by YouTube and launched in 2018. It is made available in Singapore only in 2019 and has an ad-supported free tier, as well as a paid version, YouTube Music Premium, from S$12.98 monthly.
#1: Effectiveness: Does it do what it is supposed to do?
YouTube Music is available to download for free but it is unable to play in background unless subscribed, users have to always have the screen on even if they would only want to listen to music from their phone using the app. The application does not serve it goals to provide music to its users effectively. The users will not be able to listen to music unless they have the app on which means user can never perform any other tasks while they are using the app. It might also cause users’ phones’ battery to drain, which is highly ineffective for users who are just looking for a music streaming platform.
Tumblr media
#2: Efficiency: Is it productive to users?
As YouTube Music is fairly new in the music streaming service industry, its low compatibility with different platforms and devices does not achieve the efficiency goal. There is no desktop app available hence users can only listen to their music via mobile application. The streamed music quality are also comparably low to other music streaming platforms. YouTube Music allows its paid users to stream music at up to 256 kbps (kilo-bit per second) while free users are limited to 128 kbps. YouTube Music’s algorithm is also reportedly inaccurate and not helpful in providing suggestion. According to Scott from sound guys, the recommendations make him felt myopic and cyclical.
#3: Safety: Does it prevents users from making error?
While both videos and music are easily searchable from YouTube Music and may be a plus point of the application, it also causes confusion when unofficial and users-uploaded music are included in the search result. Users might not be able to determine the music’s originality. The users’ YouTube Music search history is saved to his or her regular YouTube search history, potentially cluttering the latter with undesired music-related terms.
Besides, YouTube Music users’ are also bound to data over-usage issue. While M1 and Singtel offer unlimited music streaming using mobile data for Spotify, there is currently no similar waiver for YouTube Music in Singapore.
#4: Utility: Does it includes the appropriate functions?
The paid version of YouTube Music are able to provide most of the appropriate functions such as music search, music playback and playlist creation functions. However, the utility goal is not met if users did not subscribe for the paid version. One of the biggest issues is its background feature that can only be unlocked once subscribed.
#5: Learnability: How easy can it be learn to use?
Similar to most of the online music streaming services, YouTube music has a simple interface which is easy to learn. Users should be familiar with the application if they have experience using YouTube beforehand. However, since YouTube has updated the subscription mechanism to separate YouTube Music subscriptions from YouTube subscriptions, subscribing to an artist’s YouTube music profile will not automatically subscribed users’ regular YouTube account to the artist channel. This is confusing as users have to subscribe to channels separately in both application even though it seems to be the same account from users’ point of view.
#6: Memorability: How easy is it to remember how to use it?
The interface of YouTube Music is pretty much the same as most music player. The only setback is its shuffle play button that is not shown on the playback page, in which users will have to remember whether the playlist are being shuffled or playing in order, or based on the Up Next info shown at the bottom of the page. One limitation that this interface design is when user select a particular music to start with, the music will be played in its order by default. If users wanted to shuffle the playlist but at the same time able to play the music they wanted to listen at the moment, it is not achievable. The music will be played based on its order again if a music is selected in the middle of a shuffle.
Tumblr media
Shuffle play available on the main playlist page
Tumblr media
No Shuffle option on playback page
UX Goals Achieved: clunky, confusing, limited
In a nutshell, usability is an objective quality that can be used for comparison by asking the right questions. The six usability goals: Effectiveness, Efficiency, Safety, Utility, Learnability and Memorability serve as an useful tool in the process of interactive design. User experience is a subjective quality that is intuitive and cannot be measured. It varies greatly from person to person but it is always important to consider user experience as one of the design goals in interactive design.

Jumping Onto MyRepublic Mobile
MyRepublic recently launched its mobile services, coming on board as the fourth Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) in Singapore. This comes after their failure to secure the fourth mobile telco license in 2017. Like Circles.Life, Zero Mobile, and Zero 1, MyRepublic Mobile has attractive plans to woo customers from traditional telcos.
Price, of course, is not the sole consideration. Although Circles.Life seems to be extremely well-received, possibly aided by their head start from 2016, I had some reservations about them. They did not, and still don’t, have any decent data roaming offering. They have no phone hotline for voice calls. No, leaving voicemail, while nice to have, isn’t the same. Then, I have my own personal opinions about M1, the telco they are dependent upon to deliver their service.
But of course when Circles.Life offered their $0 plan, I took it up. Free, must get, right?
Then MyRepublic Mobile came along with their Uno plan which I thought was nicely priced. Right at the outset, MyRepublic Mobile also had details on data roaming plans. $18 for 2 GB to countries like Thailand, Japan, and Hong Kong, though still more expensive than what StarHub offers, seems reasonable. (MyRebpulic: Your rates for farther-away countries are too high.)
My original interest with MyRepublic Mobile is to get their Uno plan for my kids. I currently have a StarHub SharePlus plan for them, riding on top, and sharing the “quota”, of my main StarHub plan. I have to pay $9, plus $5 for Caller Number Display, for a total $14 per line. The SharePlus Plan does get an extra 1 GB data on top of the data allowance of the main line.
However, MyRepublic Mobile’s Uno plan is $8 with Caller Number Display included, 1 GB of high speed data, “unlimited” slower data subsequently, and a very generous 1000 mins of calls and 1000 text messages.
I do worry, with plans that have fixed data allowances, that my kids may unintentionally or unknowingly exceed their bundled data limits. MyRepublic Mobile’s plans basically allow for boundless data without extra charges. So if someone forgets or doesn’t realise that watching a video advertisements eat data, which maybe might not be terribly obvious when you’re playing a local non-networked game, there’s no cause for panic.
This $8 Uno plan makes a lot of sense for kids. That’s enough data for essentials like WhatsApp and Telegram. There’s more than enough voice call minutes than most people use on their phones nowadays.
For adults who want more high-speed data, add-on prices are reasonable. You pay $12 for 3 GB, so a Uno plan up-sized to 4 GB of high-speed data works out to $20. There’s also the Ultimate plan that gives you 80 GB of data for total $80 per month.
Both the Uno and Ultimate plans are for existing MyRepublic customers (or those with an early sign-up code). The regular public plans are:
Smart 35: $35 per month for 7 GB high-speed data
Mega 55: $55/month for 12 GB high-speed data
Xtra 85: $85/month for 25 GB high-speed data
All plans come with 1000 voice call minutes and 1000 text messages.
MyRepublic Mobile rides of StarHub network, which in my opinion is great, better than at least one of the other two traditional telcos here.
My biggest complaint about MyRepublic Mobile is their ridiculously slow mobile app. The UI looks fine. It’s not the best looking, but certainly qualifies as pleasant. However, the app is excruciatingly slow to load up. The time from launching the app, till when the main display shows my remaining data available is updated, can take up to 28 seconds. If I change to another number on my account, that takes me another 16 seconds before the remaining data value is updated. That is simply ridiculous. Checking my account is a painful experience.
You can add data on the app, buy roaming data allowances, change plan, etc. It’s convenient. Except, of course, that the extremely slowness is very painful. (MyRepublic: You really need to fix this.)
It’s perhaps a blessing for MyRepublic not to get the fourth telco license. By coming in as a MVNO, they have started their service offering very quickly. Let’s see how long more before TPG Telecom begins service.

Week One: Calls at 44,000ft in the air, London's Halal* Chicken Bibimbap, and a very windy storm?
[This post from March 2, 2017, is copied over from my other blog; nazwrotesomestuff.tumblr.com. I intended to use the blog for my travels - but stopped at two posts. HAH! So that one is getting deleted... or revamped...soon, I should do something about it]
-
The accounts below are from my travel notes/journal entries from week one. I’m now at week two, I know, I've intended to put these write ups online on separate posts, but as you can tell, I'm really late for that. So here's a compilation of it instead.
On another note, I'm fine mum, dad, and yes I still have moolahs with me. Yes, I'll let you know if I ran out. And no, bro don't even think about it, I am not buying your limited edition shoes.
CALLS FROM 44,000ft IN THE AIR
Tuesday, February 21st 2017
I spent 16 hours in total on board the plane, and an hour (sort of) in transit at Doha Hamad International airport. The journey started a little, erm, worrying.
In the first half an hour onboard Qatar airways from Singapore to Doha, a man seated diagonally stayed on the phone even after the plane had moved. I know phone calls are allowed on some airlines, but still, I was cautious. It was only when the plane lights dimmed and the captain announced that we were taking off did he hanged up. Phew!
Later, in another couple of hours, I heard a phone dial in my subconscious while somewhat asleep. I opened my eyes and saw the elder a seat away on the phone... seriously? He stayed on the call for about 10minutes while I wonder what is up with passengers like these. Aren’t calls 44,000ft up in the air expensive?
As I worry about the safety of this aircraft and the expensive calls these men were making, I managed to stay awake till we landed in Doha. Nothing interesting happened after that. We landed on a rainy morning, there were a slight delay and I had to run to catch my connection. Of course, not because I was very late, I still had about 30 minutes. I was just being Singaporean. I was being Kiasu.

HALAL* CHICKEN BIBIMBAP NEAR VICTORIA STATION, LONDON
Wednesday, 22nd February 2017
It's day two and I was already craving for asian food. Being Singaporean and growing up with its food culture, I am spoilt with food choices in that sunny island. And now that I am not there that I realise I should be thankful for that.
It’s not that London lacks of Asian food. It’s just that I don’t know where I can find legit Asian food that fits my (halal) diet. So yesterday night, I did a google search on 'Halal korean food london' and it brought me to this article http://feedthelion.co.uk/korean-restaurants-london/. Thank you, Google. And bless whoever that wrote this article.
I took my pick, screenshot the address on my phone and set a mental reminder to make my way there for lunch tomorrow.

Chicken Bibimbap at Lime Orange
Located opposite the Victoria Apollo Theatre is a small Korean restaurant, Lime Orange, where I got myself this beautiful looking halal* Chicken Bibimbap. I know what you're thinking. Lime Orange? This restaurant's name doesn't even shout 'I'm a Korean restaurant!'. If that’s what you were thinking, I was wondering the same thing too. It sounds like a juice stop, but hey, doesn’t that just makes the restaurant all the more interesting? Because it did intrigued me enough to go over and taste their food. And It was the best decision I made that day.
*Lime Orange isn’t a halal restaurant but do serve meals made with halal Chicken. I did several google searches and found out that there were several restaurants in London that serve food with halal meat, or are willing to serve food with halal meat upon request. Damn interesting lah. For Lime Orange, they had a sign up on their glass window that says that the chicken they use is halal.
On another side note, the waiter that served at this restaurant on this day had the most contagious smile and he just makes me happy despite London’s moody weather.

Ich weiß was du denkst. Lime Orange?
VERY WINDY STORM
Friday, 24th February 2017 I left London on Thursday for Nottingham the same day storm Doris paid visit to the country. I initially thought it was just a very windy day. The weather app showed the icons below and I didn't think much about it except maybe I would need to tie my hair that day.

What’s this schwooshi things?
I sat down at a cafe near Victoria Bus Station before heading there for my bus. As soon as I closed the door behind me a newspaper came flying and plastered itself against the glass door. And then I thought, "woah! someone could actually get hurt with things flying around”. Apparently, I later found out that someone did. Had a coffee and a Pain au chocolat and then made my way to the bus station, where I found out that several buses, mine included, were delayed. I texted my cousin whom I'm meeting about the delay on my journey and she got back with this article; https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/feb/23/flights-cancelled-as-storm-doris-arrives
If you have read the article, I know... No joke sia! This is some serious shit! Later several news articles that pops up showed many trains and flight departures were cancelled or delayed because of the storm. I was already on board my bus by then, Thank God. Until I heard the bus driver said, "we have Doris coming our way". Umm... Should I be worried? As we make our way to Nottingham, I saw the wind just forcing itself on everything and everyone while the trees swayed side to side, waving it's branch hands as if saying "no no, no no". Seriously. It’s waving back vigorously at the wind. I think I heard one of the trees screamed, ‘Stop it!’. I swear.
The bus driver didn't make an announcement but I overheard him on a loudspeaker call where he was told to reroute. We went through a small village somewhere in between Milton Keynes and Leicester I guess, before continuing the journey on the M1. Everyone on the bus seems calm throughout, except for a lady behind me who's on the phone complaining that she has "been on here for 4 hours". I reached Nottingham, safely, at maybe around 40mins later than scheduled.
Later that evening, we watched the news and found out there was one casualty. Trains were still delayed at 6pm, I don't know when it start moving again. Cousin said I was lucky to make it to Nottingham safely and timely.
Lucky day I guess.
Freitag, 24. Februar 2017
