The Bostonians (1984). A Boston feminist and a conservative Southern lawyer contend for the heart and mind of a beautiful and bright girl unsure of her future.
Man, I wish this was better than it was. The push-pull between warring parts of your identity as manifested in a uniquely tangled love triangle really works on paper, but unfortunately it never finds its resonance despite the very good performances of Christopher Reeve and Vanessa Redgrave. In many ways, Madeleine Potter unfortunately feels like the weak link - you never quite buy her as the magnetic presence the movie tries to sell her as, but beyond that, her moral dilemma never quite feels like one you can sink your teeth into. It's a bit of a bummer, because it feels like there's a really special movie in here somewhere, this just isn't it. 5/10.

So, one thing I would like to word out before I retreat a bit.
As you can see some posts ago, I have talked about the 'Harry Potter'-actors, who display some pretty clear imagery unfortunately of structures in the current society here on earth that are very, very unpleasant. I think if you've researched it a bit, you are aware of what I mean.
So make of that what you will. It doesn't really matter what media you watch or what artist you enjoy, it all basically leads to the same sh*t.
Anyways, I watched "Gambit" a couple of days ago for some distraction, because it was on TV. And it was hilarious, I loved the movie! ;) It was really fun but I did notice some strange undertones and then the next day I saw someone pointing it out too. Now you could argue that it is still not extremely overt or leave it open for discussion. In my opinion it is enough to question how deep everyone who participated in this movie was involved with this structure. (I find the one with the lion actually super concerning. God bless and protect the beautiful animal, who was involved in the making of that scene here!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yesterday I actually remembered this one movie that Alan did waaayyy back in the day, called "Closet Land" (1991) . I had never really paid it any mind because it seemed just kinda weird to me. But like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You see that with different eyes today.
The thing is, I don't even generally mind the topic but as far as I can see it is a very disturbing "role play" also. I could see it as artistic to some extent but having done parts work for a while now I also am more aware of what I'm seeing plus the imagery again, you catch my drift.
I'm not entirely sure if I should give it a try and watch it, because I think it's probably pretty intense and well executed. But aside from the setting, it is also pretty heavy as far as I've seen and as always Alan definitely knew exactly how to hold and touch a woman but it is in the context of severe torture here, so I don't think it is healthy to associate that together. I don't entirely buy that sadistic stuff on his side because he always has that super gentle undertone in his manner and his actions. But maybe that movie would show otherwise, since there are apparently so many layers of physical and psychological torture involved in the story.
I don't know, bottom line is, I don't know how deeply he was involved in the societal structures that I spoke about and that's pretty nasty. We'll all find out eventually and have to each decide for ourselves what consequences we draw from that.

Top 5 fantasy books!
Oh you went straight for the hard one didn’t you? I am….maybe bending the rules a little to include series (but I will list my favorite book of each one.)
The Chronicles of Narnia, C. S. Lewis.
This one goes without saying—my first fantasy series (I was maybe 6? I wish I remembered exactly how old I was when I read LWW for the first time.) and one I can come back to over and over and always find something new and beautiful and true. Favorite book is and has been The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (but The Horse and His Boy is a close second. And it’s just so hard to pick—I love them all for different reasons and in different moods.) The sea gives me all the feels in every story and it may have started here. 2. The Chronicles of Prydain, Lloyd Alexander
Read when I was in early middle school, the perfect time to encounter this series. So good and an instant favorite. I’ve revisited this one less than Narnia, but whenever I do I find old friends and new truth waiting for me. I think my favorite is the fourth one, Taran Wanderer.
3. The Dark is Rising sequence, Susan Cooper
Read later in middle school, I was a bit iffy on these at first. There’s a lot of magic and a lot of darkness, and while I’m more ok with that stuff than many Christians seem to be, I would caution people to read this with both eyes open and stop if you feel like you need to for any reason. That said, I did finish after a brief break and loved the message that light eventually does triumph over darkness. I love the world and the characters and the references/building off of Arthurian legend. I love the fourth one, The Grey King, for many reasons, for its Welsh-ness and the friendships forged therein.
4. The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
I first read the Hobbit from the library upon my mom’s recommendation and was unenthused. I know! Blasphemy! But I rediscovered it and LOTR about a year later and…the rest, as they say, is history. I’m not sure I can pick a favorite book, because I haven’t reread it in so long and my reactions would probably be very different now. But I love it and I love the PJ movies and the discussions both can spark about human nature and about Themes and Morals and Ideas.
5. The Water Horse, by Dick King-Smith
This one is a bit of a curveball. I spent a while thinking “what other book could possibly rank with these four series?” I’ve read a lot of other fantasy and fantasy-adjacent books, but many of them are not to “favorite of favorites” level (though I do love them dearly). But this one. Discovered sometime in young childhood (6? 7?), I read and listened to it over and over. A story of a girl and her brother and a Creature. A grumpy grandfather and kind parents. I attribute my fascination and love of Scotland to this book. It’s still one of my comfort stories. I need to give it a reread and finally purchase my own copy.
Thanks for the ask, Riley!

And They Lived... - Steven Salvatore (nblm, fiction, about gender identity and learning to love yourself, read it a while ago but it was very nice)
I Wish You All The Best - Mason Deaver (nblm, fiction, about finding your identity and people who care about you, very cute and sweet)
The Song Of Achilles - Madeleine Miller (mlm, historical, very good in general)
Carry On - Rainbow Rowell (mlm, background wlw in the third book, fantasy, it's a trilogy, basically Harry Potter if it was gay and also better)
Silver In The Wood - Emily Tesh (mlm, fantasy, very pretty, lots of fae stuff and lovely descriptions, it has a really good sequel too)
Pretty much anything by Alice Oseman (all cute and lovely and great, though I've only read Radio Silence so far I hear only good things, Solitaire is on my to-read list)
I Kissed Shara Wheeler - Casey McQuinston (wlw, fiction, it's been a while but I liked this book)
The Falling In Love Montage - Ciara Smyth (wlw, fiction, this book was so cute and funny and deeply emotional it made me Feel way too many things, I'd definitely recommend it)
What Big Teeth - Rose Szabo (a bit of queerness all around, fantasy, werewolves and monsters, this one was pretty cool!, lots of original ideas for the world/character building)
His Quiet Agent - Ada Maria Soto (mlm, asexual, fiction, about like spies but this book was so gentle and sweet I wanted to cry in the best way possible)
Some By Virtue Fall - Alexandra Rowland (wlw, historical fiction(?), theatre drama!! rival romance!! duels!!, a very good read in general)
Don’t Want You Like a Best Friend - Emma R. Alban (wlw, historical fiction, I’m not usually one for regency romances, but I really liked this!!, very cute and lots of drama, and there’s a sequel coming out soon!)

In the 1975 series 𝘈𝘧𝘧𝘢𝘪𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵, the episode titled 𝘋𝘢𝘪𝘴𝘺 featured Georgina Hale in this breathtaking gown as Daisy Miller. Because the show lacks a credited costume designer, it’s likely that this costume originated with an even earlier production.   The dress went on to be used again in the 1984 production of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘴, worn by Madeleine Potter as Verena Tarrant.   Finally, in 1993, this costume made a brief appearance in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘈𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘐𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 on an extra!   Where do you think this piece originated? Queer gaze in art and photography of the past
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Konstantin Somov, A Reclining Man, 1936. Somov was gay, and quite openly. Here he painted his lover and muse Boris Snezhkovsky
Paul Cadmus, Jerry, 1931. Cadmus painted Jared French, another artist, while they, as a couple, were travelling around Europe
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alice Austen, Gertrude Dancing, 1899. Alice Austen, a pioneering female photographer, met Gertrude Tate in 1897. They lived together, travelling, throwing tea parties, and riding automobile, until Alice's death in 1952
Wilhelm von Gloeden, Two Men Talking, c. 1895. Von Gloeden was famous for his homoerotic photography and made Italy popular among gay men and lesbians. Although this photo is likely just that, a photo, its meaning is clear
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Louise Catherine Breslau, The Toilette, 1898. Breslau lived with Madeleine Zillhardt, fellow artist, for over forty years. She drew her often, like in this tender painting. There's now a street in Paris called Place Louise Catherine Breslau & Madeleine Zillhardt
Andreas Andersen, Hendrik Andersen and John Briggs Potter in Florence, 1894. Andersen depicted his brother Hendrik, a sculptor and the lover of Henry James who caled him his beautiful Henrico. Hendrik met artist John Potter before James, in 1894, through his brother Andreas. The three travelled together in Italy

"Madeleine L'Engle said that any good work of art is more and better than the artist. Shakespeare, she said, "wrote better than he could write; Bach composed more deeply, more truly than he knew; Rembrandt's brush put more of the human spirit on canvas than Rembrandt could comprehend. A gardener cannot make daffodils grow, nor can a baker force the alchemic glory of yeast and sugar. And yet we are given means of grace that we can practice, whether we feel like it or not, and these carry us. Craftsmen - writers, brewers, dancers, potters - show up and work, and they participate in a mystery. They take up a craft, again and again, on bad days and good, waiting for a flash of mercy, a gift of grace."

a July rec list
I read a truly absurd amount of fanfic in July, and since I’m tracking my fic reading anyway these days, I figured, why not pull up some faves. I’ll do my best to tag authors when and where I can! I’ll throw some commentary in there to talk about why I like some of them, but rest assure this is a rec list and I think every one of them has something to love.
Hockey RPF
In the scrawl of the ringside choir E, 37k, Hockey RPF | @goodnightpuckbunny Sid/Geno
“Geno, this is Sid Crosby,” Kris says, sitting back down. The kid towers over both of them, but seems small in the office. “You need a coach, so he’s gonna help you out.” He looks Sid over, eyes scanning like he’s looking for weaknesses, faults in his form. Sid has plenty, but he’s not fighting anymore. He doesn’t bother mirroring the gesture. He can guess without looking. “He old,” Geno eventually decrees.
Interview with the Vampire
The Vampire Eric
E | 4k | falsescience (@theburialofstrawberries) Eric Bogosian/Jam Reiderson, Jam Reiderson
Oh ho, Eric thinks to himself, and then, aloud, because it’s just too delicious, and wouldn’t Rolin be ashamed, and a little pissed: “Oh ho!” He feels zapped alive: young, powerful, god-like. Jacob starts giggling immediately. “Did you just say ‘oh ho’?” “Or maybe aspen. What do you think, Eric?” “Not a damn clue,” says Eric, with a broad grin. “You look very satisfied. He looks very satisfied, doesn’t he?” Jacob smiles at Sam over his hitched shoulder. “Hm,” says Sam. “I think we play it safe, and go with red maple.” Yeah, Eric is certain: Jacob and Sam aren’t fucking. But they’d like to be.
First of all, I am RPF’ing these people real hard in some private chats. But largely, I like the characterization happening here, and the little turn of understanding that happens in the last third of the fic.
reformation
E | 44k | verseau (@downstairsbar) Lestat/Louis
we're gonna heal. we're gonna start again. you've brought the orchestra, synchronized swimmers. // It makes him speechless sometimes, how much he loves Lestat. He thought for years, a decade, that it was sickness. It’s not. It’s not. Even when Louis hated Lestat, nothing was more certain than that he loved him.
There’s some great, great plotting and characterization here but/also I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve read a fic and known immediately that the author is Black. That’s obviously not a requirement of the fic I write but it's nice to have Southern Black characters really sound like people I’ve known/grown up around etc.
let’s keep this off the record
E | 1.4k | anonymous
Louis/Santiago (sort of)
There would be no second chances for the Englishman, no opportunity for him to crawl out of some dump and seek revenge. Louis would make sure of that.
Honestly, I think it's great that fandom has a long and storied history of skullfucking. I think it's fun that weird shit like that still happens around here.
Maman
T | 2k | anonymous Claudia/Madeline, Louis/Lestat
Madeleine meets in the in-laws. Particularly one of them.
transpires
M-E | 5.8k total | familiar (@bigvampo or @camilliar? sekrit you've got so many blogs) Louis/Lestat
I mean, sekrit is just a fucking stellar writer. sekrit’s got a way of telling so much —  about a character, their mental state, the world their in —  in just a few razor sharp details. also these fics are so funny and the characterizations of Louis and Lestat feel like natural progressions from what we’ve seen in canon both in how much they love each other and how terrible they are (to each other and in general)
Harry Potter
Right. I think I’ve always been pretty upfront about my continued reading of Harry Potter fanfiction, but in case it's somehow necessary to say, please do not come to my inbox talking about JK Rowling. I don’t think about that woman and I’m very clear about what she thinks about me.
Those Three Curses
E | 6k total | @dodgerkedavra Draco/Harry
Obviously I had a bit of a fucking dodgerkedavra moment here, but these blew me away. So much story telling in such little space.
Former Things Come to Mind
E | 64k | dodgerkedavra
Harry Potter has had a headache for seven and a half years.
In the Presence of My Enemy E | 41k | dodgerkedavra Draco/Harry
All Harry knows is that Sectumsempra is for enemies. He doesn’t know that it will bind him to Draco Malfoy, for better or worse, ‘til death do them part.
Tiny Home
E | 30k | @wolfpants Draco/Harry/Ron
Harry and Ron left the Aurors years ago to travel the world and make up for lost time. When they finally decide to settle roots back in England, together, building a tiny home in the Lake District by hand seems like the perfect plan. What they don't realise is that Draco Malfoy already lives on the plot of land that they choose to build on. A story about years of feelings, about weaving lives in and around each other, and about finding a place safe enough to call home.
I really feel like there’s been an explosion of excellent Draco/Harry/Ron all of a sudden. One of my qualms with a lot of polyship fics is that it's very uhhh “we must do everything together” and I really love that this fic breaks that down and allows everyone to have histories and experiences together as dyads and all together.
In Our Blood
E | 37k | secretsalex Draco/Harry
Draco is an accomplished pure-blood curse breaker, and Harry is tasked with accompanying him on his latest job—cleaning up the Van Boer mansion, which has been under a devastating fertility curse for seven generations.
I’m not even going to bullshit y’all. This fic reminded me why I love mpreg. Excellent use of body horror, body dread, suspense, all these things. Also, an mpreg fic that remembers abortion is a thing. Amazing!
Probationary Action
E | 63k | @toomuchplor Draco/Harry
As part of the terms of the probationary contract, DRACO LUCIUS MALFOY shall submit for inspection his WAND on the last day of every month, such inspection to be carried out by a duly registered and fully qualified AUROR in the employ of the MINISTRY OF MAGIC, and such inspection to include a PRIORI INCANTATEM spell to ensure that no PROHIBITED MAGICS as heretofore described have been practised by the aforementioned probationer.
I’ve been obsessed with toomuchplor since Inception and this fic reminded me why. I don’t love Auror!Harry fic (truly, just so much unchecked, delighted writing about police brutality) but I do like any fic where Harry starts to wake up to the fact that maybe just because they’re “the good guys”, not every choice made by the Aurors/Wizarding Gov’t in general is right. Also, I appreciate the expansion on the idea of sex charms!
Embers
E | 41k | @shiftylinguini Draco/Harry
Werewolf Alphas aren't meant to be alone, or to suppress their ruts indefinitely like Draco has been since he was bitten eight years ago. He needs company, companionship, to knot ― he needs an Omega Heat Companion. At least, that’s what the Healers say, and even Draco can admit contacting the person they’ve referred him to might be nice. Of course it turns out to be bloody Potter.
idk man, I like a fic that treats sex work like it's just a job. Worthy of respect, full of technical expertise, etc.
--
Both of these next fics came from @hd-wireless which has been, pound for pound, one of the best fests I've ever witness and is a testament to how important having multiple fic fests in a fandom can be! so much good shit to read!
The most he’s ever said
E | 16k | anonymous Draco/Harry
It takes them twenty years.
Two Houses
E | 11k | anonymous Draco/Harry
Two households, both alike in... meddling Floo connections, apparently? Draco Malfoy is a highly professional and well-respected Ministry official, with a demanding schedule, a loving son, and—through no fault of his own—a faulty Floo connection that keeps regurgitating the Minister for Magic through his fireplace.
I really enjoy that there's been more of a trend of writing about these two as older people and fleshing out the characterization of their kids.

LOST reading list
a list of books read by characters in lost for you to enjoy (or not). this isn't every book referenced in lost. for all that and more, see the "literary works" page on lostpedia, where im getting my info
no, my criteria for this list is that it's been read by a lost character. i'll tell you who (you'll see sawyers name a lot), and i'll add if it's somebody's fave book. this list will not include things like the bible or the qur'an or historical texts, as that while that can technically be recreational reading (it seems to be for ben), i'd rather not
Alice's Adventures In Wonderland by Lewis Carroll (read by Jack)
Are You There God? It's Me Margaret by Judy Blume (read by Sawyer)
A Brief History of Time by Stephan Hawking (read by Ben)
The Brothers Karamazov by Fyodor Dostoevsky (read by Ben)
Caravan of Dreams by Idries Shah (read by Ben)
Carrie by Stephen King (Read by Juliet, Ben and various other Others. This is Juliet's favourite book)
The Chosen by Chaim Potok (read by Sawyer)
Dark Horse by Tami Hoag (read by Jack)
The Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger by Stephen King (read by Ben)
Dirty Work by Stuart Woods (read by Jack)
Everything That Rises Must Converge by Flannery O'Connor (read by Jacob)
Evil Under The Sun by Agatha Christie (read by Sawyer)
Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury (read by Ben)
Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes (read by Ben)
The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand (read by Sawyer)
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by JK Rowling (read by Jack)
Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Salmon Rushdie (read by Desmond)
Hotel by Arthur Hailey (read by Ben)
The Invention of Morel by Adolfo Bioy Casares (read by Sawyer)
Lancelot by Walker Percy (read by Sawyer)
Laughter in the Dark by Vladimir Nabokov (read by Hurley)
Notes from Underground by Fyodor Dostoevsky (read by Ilana)
The Oath by John Lescroart (read by Ben)
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (read by Sawyer. This is Sawyer's favourite book and author)
Roots by Alex Haley (read by Ben)
A Separate Reality by Carlos Castaneda (read by Ben)
The Sheltering Shy by Paul Bowles (read by Ben)
Ulysses by James Joyce (read by Ben)
Valhalla Rising by Clive Cussler (read by Ben and Jack)
VALIS by Philip K. Dick (read by Ben)
Watership Down by Richard Adams (read by Boone and Sawyer)
A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L'Engle (read by Sawyer)
Every work by Charles Dickens other than Our Mutual Friend (read by Desmond. This is his favourite author)
I encourage you to speculate on the character implications put forth by these reading choices. This can raise such questions as: Jack is a Harry Potter fan? What is Desmond's favourite book by Charles Dickens? Boone can read??
Thank you for your time

Claudia's Celebration of Life: Spark in the Dark - Hobbies
Tumblr media
As the title suggests, this event is to celebrate the wonderful Claudia; her personality, her aspirations, her journey. The heart for the past two seasons of AMC Interview with The Vampire. This is to take the narrative back to her, proving she's not just a shingle roof for us. 1. Aug 11th & 12th: Hobbies
Tumblr media
For the Hobbies prompt, my brain immediately went to book!Claudia, where we know she initially loved playing with porcelain dolls. The only time we see AMC!Claudia with a doll, however, it's a voodoo doll.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This short but sweet scene is a stark demonstration of power; of how vampires are removed from (and even above) the practices & beliefs of mortals. Claudia takes the magical weapon and treats it as nothing more than a child's toy to be cooed over, dismissing any threat the terrified NOLA locals have of the "Weird Brothers and their child bride" who haven't aged in 30+ years.
When Loustat Turned her, we get to see the bedroom they give her; a confectionery dream. But I laughed out loud when I noticed this:
Tumblr media
That tiny AF rocking horse is LITERALLY for toddlers--a FIVE year old, like she was in the books. Claudia's waaaay too big to get anything out of that rocking horse--a Hobby Horse would've been a far better purchase! (Which just goes to show Loustat was so hyperfocused on having a child that they infantalized her from the offset.)
Otherwise, AMC!Claudia never expressed the slightest interest in toys--which might make sense at face value, but I doubt this had anything to do with her being aged up. (I played with dolls at 14--I still play with digital dolls in video games like The Sims.) Instead, I reckon it has more to do with AMC!Claudia growing up in what was clearly an abusive & neglectful home, where luxuries like toys were unavailable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got James & the Giant Peach / Harry Potter / Mathilda vibes. I bet toys weren't on the list of things her mean aunt & reluctant caretaker would've bothered wasting what little money they obviously had on Claudia's hobbies. Whatever Claudia would've done to amuse herself would've had to require her imagination; repurposed from things already around her, or found in nature. And we see that when Louis takes her fishing--Claudia takes obvious delight in catching fireflies.
Tumblr media
Claudia also obviously loved to dance (like Louis) and sing (like Lestat); which we see in NOLA and ofc in Paris, when she falls immediately in love with the Theatre; and even seemed to have some fun with the Baby LouLou performance (until the novelty wore off).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She also clearly shared Loustat's love of cinema--again factoring into the Theatre's appeal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
IDK if Claudia enjoyed the lessons Les taught her, or if she just used them as a means to an end--especially since we don't see her playing piano or chess (or even driving) after NOLA. (It couldn't've been that with Les gone, Claudia had no one to play with, since pianos & chess can obvs be played solo). Were those pastimes soured/ruined cuz of their association with Les? Was she never really interested in them to start? Regardless, she was great at it, especially chess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In this same convo, we see Claudia painting/drawing on a tiny easel. And we know she drew a lot in the books/film, too (inc. the nude bodies of her female victims, and everywhere she & Lou traveled).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So she's clearly artistic in other ways outside of performance. Too bad we didn't see Lou take her to the Louvre--she seemed to enjoy listening to him talk/brag about hanging out with Paris' artist circles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ofc, there's also her diaries. Claudia was obviously literate when Loustat met her (well b4 she ran away & hid on college campuses); and she leapt on the chance to keep a diary like a fish to water. Diaries were her constant companions, up until she met Madeleine, and finally had a kindred spirit to talk to; closer than Lou.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We don't know what Claudeleine would've talked about, but we see her interest in literature, especially fiction, and her indifference to philosophy, giving us an idea of the topics she'd've been interested in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And ofc, Claudia was an exemplary predator, who felt "vampire pride," and loved to kill and drink blood.

I’m 28nb searching for new 23+ discord RP partners for some canon fandom RP’s across multiple shows. I usually lean toward longer, literate responses with response times that ranges from constantly to once every few days [since I work]. I never demand replies of people but think it’s right to communicate so we’re not wasting each others time. Really enjoy building out plots with my partners and can do most genres [usually lean toward a splash of angst] including AU’s.
