My Love Story With Yamada-kun At Lv 999 Is A Romance You Should Definitely Watch (Anime Review)
If there’s a studio that can capture romance well, it’d be Madhouse. The way they animate romantic scenes in anime is immaculate. I absolutely loved My Love Story!! And how romance was animated in Cardcaptor Sakura and Bibliophile Princess (which I still need to finish). My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv. 999 is a prime example of well-animated romantic scenes and fluffy, colorful animation.
Tumblr media
My Love Story With Yamada-kun at Lv. 999 is a shoujo romance story between gamers. 20-year-old college student Akane Kinoshita gets dumped by her boyfriend one day as he fell for another girl over the internet. In an attempt to get him back, she attends a game event, trips and meets a handsome guy named Akito Yamada who picks up her shoe. Akane learns three things about him: 1. He’s Afro Yamada from FOS, the game she plays and the focus of the event she is attending; 2. He’s a well-known gamer that her ex-boyfriend ignores her when he sees them together; 3. Yamada is an 18-year-old high school student. Does that stop Akane from falling for him? Nope. She falls for him because that is the point of the story!
I’ll address the elephant in the room first. I’ve seen people on social media berate the age difference between the two leads because one is a college student and the other is a high school student. 18 and 20 isn’t a big gap, contrary to Twitter’s belief. A two year age difference is nothing special. There are a lot of pairs with a two year age difference. There’s no difference in maturity levels as both characters are mature in their own ways. There is nothing problematic with this story or the characters. If you think a two-year age gap is weird, then maybe you’re the weird one…
In all honesty, I really like the premise of having gamers fall in love. In today’s society, gaming is the trend, so it was clever of the author to ride on that and to make a romance out of it. I think the way this story was written is actually crafted well from a writer’s perspective. Akane isn’t shown to be a nerdy gamer; she plays games casually and is fashionable and pretty. It shows that anyone can play games and it shows in Episode 3 where Akane meets up with her guild members that aren’t Yamada in real life. They range from a handsome bespectacled 19-year-old college student Eita who catfishes as the guild master Rurihime, his gremlin younger sister Runa who’s in middle school and strawberry farmer Takezo Kamota who’s much older than all of them. It shows that anyone of all ages can enjoy games and that there’s no shame in doing so.
Sure, there are conflicts every now and then like Akane not being over her boyfriend, Runa getting jealous and protective over her circle of friends that she had to trick Akane, and Yamada’s classmate Tsubaki having a crush on him, but they all get resolved efficiently and without the need to drag out time. I actually like that! Sometimes, shoujo and romance animes can be hard because some conflict drag out and ruins the flow (I’m looking at you, Kimi ni Todoke with your Kento/miscommunication plot point).
The characters are all nicely written for a romance anime. Akane is a twenty-year-old girl and a college student. While she is the older one in her relationship with Yamada, that doesn’t mean she’s mature. She has problems and issues that most young girls face like not getting over rejection, being overly trusting and overthinking. People would think, “Oh, you’re an adult, you have to start acting like one”. Adulthood isn’t all sunshine and rainbows as people might expect and Akane proves that. College students are dumb and a mess; I would know because I was dumb and a mess at that age. I also like the fact that she does have dating experience. Akane, in general, is a fun character and a good shoujo lead; I think wasted/drunk Akane is the most hilarious thing ever. I love that she has different outfits! They’re all so cute and a few look like something I’d wear casually!
Yamada is rather mature for a high school boy. However, as a gamer, he’s rather unrealistic because most gamers I’ve seen are loud, constantly online, and probably lacks a love interest. How often do you see a tall, handsome gamer who treats women well? How often do you meet such a gamer guy outside of gaming? Despite his rather unrealistic qualities, I do think that he and Akane match well because of their personality differences and just how kind and respectful they are to each other. Yamada is only awkward with romance and girls because he had hurt someone in the past and doesn’t want to step out of his boundaries to hurt anyone again. I guess my only gripe with Yamada would be that he’s voiced by Kouki Uchiyama who’s voiced dozens of characters similar to him so it’s to be expected that he’d voice this guy too (this is the fourth anime I’ve seen that has him in the cast; three of them are the same character with black hair and one is a marmot); it’s not a bad thing to be typecasted since it is a job for voice actors. I do like Uchiyama a lot! I just feel like it’s to be expected in a way?
I do like how Eita has the qualities to be the second lead, but he’s not. He’s mainly in the story to be supportive and help our main duo get together. He’s a long time friend of Akito’s. Eita’s probably my favorite character in this anime because of how entertaining he is. When his identity as Rurihime is revealed, he goes on and on about his relationship with Rurihime (he just likes playing as a female character in general) and doesn’t think him being a catfisher is weird. Yeah, you do you, Eita! I do like how he’s a good big brother to Runa; he scolds her when she does something bad, but he is generally caring and supportive of her. He’s also somewhat of a big brother to Akito since he’s a year older than him. Eita is a vital character in this story because he’s the reason why Akane is in the guild and why Akane and Yamada eventually got together.
Runa looked to be a romantic rival at first, but she’s just a lonely girl with no friends. She’s protective of Yamada and such because she doesn’t want change in her life and just wants things to be the same. Although the prank she played on Akane was bad and dangerous, she does get Akane’s forgiveness by becoming her friend, which Runa enjoys and appreciates. She’s a definitive younger sister character with her snark and sassiness. She’s also a very timid character as she gets nervous easily. I’m glad that she is someone that I got to warm up to in the anime and that she doesn’t continuously play pranks on Akane to kick her out of the guild. My only gripe with Runa is that her game avatar doesn’t appear once in the anime. What does it look like? I want to know!
Kamota is the last of the major Chocorabbit guild members (before Tsubaki’s arrival) and is the oldest. He’s such an adorable character. I think the fact that he’s an older character, thus has so many connection makes realistic sense. If you don’t know, being an older Asian person means you know practically everyone in your community; my parents are like this as they practically know a lot of people in the Korean community where I live. He was yelling at the creepy suit guy in Episode 5 (voiced by OnoD) and telling him that he has a lawyer friend was peak. He’s also hilarious in the FOS world where his character is a tiny fuzzball, but when in battle, he grows ten times bigger and becomes the OP-est member. It’s a waste to not see what his avatar’s powered up self looks like.
Of the side characters, I think Momo is my favorite because she’s so supportive of Akane. While she does envy Akane at times, it’s more of a friendly kind. She’s always supportive of her and is her biggest emotional support when things look bad for her. I do hope she gets the boyfriend of her dreams.
Okamoto and Tsubaki are Yamada’s friends from school. Tsubaki’s role is that she has a crush on him, but is also a gamer. She joins Chocorabbit a bit later in the anime and does get along with Akane. Okamoto is comic relief. I do want to see more of his friends, honestly. They do seem like good people for Yamada to hang out with them constantly.
The voice acting is pretty good since they get a good mix of well-known voice actors in the cast. Inori Minase and Kouki Uchiyama play the leads while Natsuki Hanae, Ai Kakuma and Nobuo Tobita are the supporting cast. That’s pretty solid all around. I think the two most standout voice actors are Ai Kakuma and Nobuto Tobita. Kakuma has two roles in the anime: Rurihime and Runa. The fact that she voices both characters differently shows off her talent. Rurihime has a cute tone befitting an avatar while Runa is soft-spoken with a lot of snark and grouch. Tobita’s voice as Takezo is really good. He voices him adorably but when things get dire, he changes his tone to a deeper one. I really liked the way he voiced his avatar character the most.
The music in the anime’s good. The music used in the romantic scenes is so soothing and brings out the vibe so well. The opening and ending songs are good too! You can’t go wrong with Kana-boon!
There’s nothing I particularly disliked about this anime, which is good! I totally recommend this anime to anyone wanting to watch romance animes. Heck, this has become one of my favorite romances now. I’m glad I was able to watch it and enjoy it! I think there should be more college-themed romances or even gimmicky ones like gamers falling in love. This is the last of the Spring 2023 animes I’ve watched, so I’m glad to finally be able to review this. What are your thoughts on this anime if you have seen it?

I haven't written fanfiction in about 10 years. However, after watching and re-reading loving Yamada, I really want to write a piece about Eita and Momo.
Momo is literary the kind of friend anyone would want.
But, my point is that I think romance between Eita and Momo would be interesting. I can see them both constantly annoying each other but being supportive. Add to that Eita's sister complex and Momo's marriage plan.

My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 (2023, Japan)
Director: Morio Asaka
Writer: Yasuhiro Nakanishi (based on the manga by Mashiro)
Mini-review:
This was cute! It was certainly predictable, but all the characters are likable and the show was clearly made by pros. In fact, it didn't surprise me at all when I realized Morio Asaka and Madhouse were behind this. They have made some of the best animes of all time and they clearly know how to make the most of their skills even for a relatively simple story. Anyway, I really liked the way the characters develop. I know some people might be uncomfortable with the age gap, but the show handles it gracefully and I wasn't bothered by it at all. I also loved how they incorporated games and gaming into the plot. I think I hadn't seen that in a romcom before, so it felt quite refreshing and helped make up for the predictability of the whole thing. That being said, the ending felt somewhat anticlimactic and sudden. It did make me look forward to future episodes, though, so maybe that was the goal. To sum up, I'd recommend this if you're looking for a solid, feel-good anime romcom.

Kiyono Momohime "20 Questions 20 Answers" Haro Puro Love Talk!
In 2018, we’re having a celebration of the Hello! Project 20th Anniversary (Hello Love). For the members who belong to Hello! Project, their thoughts on the 20th anniversary activities and enthusiasm for 2018, thoughts of an everyday idol, we had a passionate “20 questions 20 answers” talk~ This time its BEYOOOOONDS Kiyono Momohime!!
Tumblr media
Kiyono Momohime = Born December 22nd 2014. Hometown Tokyo.
Q1: Tell us the meaning of your name! Originally, it seems they wanted to use the ‘hime’ character. Peach blossoms are a good auspicious flower and, with ‘hime’ it’d be a princess-like cute person; they packed in hopes that I would grow to be a lovable person. If it wasn’t Momohime it would have been Jasmine! Also, there were thoughts of Remonhime or Ichigohime (laughs). If I was a boy, it seems like it would have been ‘Maro’ for a long life and happiness.
Q2: What senior are you aiming towards?
Tsugunaga Momoko-san (Former Berryz Koubou/Country Girls) and Sayashi Riho-san (Former Morning Musume). Tsugunaga-san went on a lot of variety programs alone; she always stuck to being herself after all. Its cool that her character wont get lost someday. With Sayashi-san I admire her performing and dancing. I can say personally she is very skilled, she has the kind of presence where your eyes will follow her. During the Kenshuusei Diagnostic Ability Test Recital, I showed off Sayashi-san’s main singing in “Tsumetai Kaze to Kataomoi”, and I was able to get the best performance award. With Sayashi-san’s fascinating dance in the interlude, I had decided to do it from the moment I heard it. I’m thankful and happy that I’ve met Sayashi-san.
Q3: Who would you want to be reborn as?
Morning Musume ‘19’s Sato Masaki-san. She isn’t ordinary in a very good sense, the way she thinks is amazing. I wonder where her ideas come from, and I think it would be a really fun life.
Q4: What are you the best at in Hello! Project?
Human Beatboxing. During my time in Kenshuusei I didn’t blog at all, so I didn’t have anywhere to send out information. But, recently I’ve started blogging and using Instagram, and I’m finally able to inform people. Since my opportunities to show it off are accumulating, I think I really want to do it more! Q5: Tell us something amazing about Hello! Project! The 16 beat. In any case rhythm is life! Its relentlessly drilled into you. Also the lyrics are deep. There are phrases I don’t understand well, I often think about it like “Ah, so it’s like this”. I think that’s something amazing about the music.
Q6: Who would you want to be in a Hello! Project special unit with?
Hello! Project Kenshuusei generation mate Yonemura Kirara-chan. Since I really get along with her, I want to sing with her. Also Kawamura Ayano-chan (Angerme). She is much older than me but, she was my first junior in Kenshuusei! Somehow I was a senior but younger than my junior who is the older Ayano-chan; it has a pretty good feeling to it. We talk quite a bit. Its really fun to talk with her, since I can give her various advice; I think it would be a fun unit.
Q7: Tell us a BEYOOOOONDS song you like! “Megane no Otoko no Ko”. Since I start the song saying “Ah, well then”, it’s a really important role I was given. In the middle of the song I leave early to change; since I actually have the role of the glasses boys girlfriend, there is also pressure with it. There was a time I was listening to “Megane no Otoko no Ko” so often not a day would go by I wouldn’t hear it, so there were also times I hated it and wanted it to go away already. But, in the performance the members make eye contact, and I think it’s a fun song in the end. Since it’s the first song since BEYOOOOONDS started, I think its full of memories in the end.
Q8: What is a Hello! Project song you like?
Morning Musume -san’s “Be Alive”. It starts with a one-on-one feel from the piano so, I thought the lyrics would be kind of sad but, its really positive. I originally liked Hello! Project, but when Oda Sakura-san joined Morning Musume-san, I came to gradually like it. Oda-san’s audition challenge song was “Be Alive” so, I was always watching Oda-san’s video to memorize the harmony part. I was always listening to it so suddenly I came to like it.
Q9: What is the difference between current and previous Hello! Project?
I’ve heard that they got to speak on variety shows; previously they had an image of being intense. Therefore up until I joined Hello! Project Kenshuusei there was a period where I was scared and couldn’t move forward like “I wonder if I can bear it”. But, when I joined it wasn’t like that at all. They would get angry with me, though. I think I’m very thankful that the seniors would welcome me warmly.
Q10: Other than yourself, who would you recommend as an oshi?
Angermes Wada Ayaka-san. She’s also Hello! Project’s leader; we do lives in all over the country, and she really puts in a lot of effort. She’s really kind, she has taught me various things like “it’s like this!”. I was fan the whole time during her S/mileage era, its an amazing feeling to have watched Wada-san grow up and do activities since she was small; I think I’d also like you to see my growth like Wada-san.
Q11: What do you want us to see most from yourself?
There is dancing and singing but, I want you to see all of it. I aim to be a different person in a good sense. I think there are things only I can do after all, and since I want you to understand me, I want you to look for me a bit.
Q12: What is work you want to challenge?
Human beatboxing is my specialty and, I don’t think there are that many people that can do it! Therefore I’d like to do it for some kind of work. Also, from now on I want to challenge vocal percussion! I’d like to have a session with someone.
Q13: What do you want us to see most from BEYOOOOONDS?
I think everyone is the same in that we never get bored, I want you to see our ‘give it our all’ spirit. In “Megane no Otoko no Ko” and “Bunkasai Jikkou Iinchou no Koi” we all have roles, and during the songs there are scenes with costume changes. Maeda Kokoro-chan has a fast change scene, and each time the costume is different. I’d like you to pay attention as the way we sing and our influence is different.
Q14: What will you be doing after 20 years?
My first goal, is to be in Hello! Project for 10 years. Also, it’s a really big dream to say but, I’d also like to become the Hello! Project leader. Since I’ll have become 34 in 20 years, what will I be doing? Now I’m really taking care, as I want the name Kiyono Momohime to be known even more than it is now.
Q15: Since it’s the 20th anniversary, tell us a secret!
When joined Kenshuusei I feigned friendliness. I was really passive. Like if I was asked “Do you want to go together?” I’d be like “Ah, that’s ok,”.  I wasn’t someone that spoke in a big voice, I was always hesitant. But, Ichioka Reina-chan said something like “Do want to hang out?” and gradually I opened my heart. But, my heart opened in two stages! The first stage was then, and the second stage was when BEYOOOOONDS was decided as the 9 members. When Okamura Minami-chan came on, she was the same age as me, and my heart opened another time.
Q16: What is something you want to be able to do after a year?
Hikakin-san has been doing YouTube as Bunbun Hello, they have a noise voice that sounds rattle-y. That sound is made from crushing your throat so nothing comes out, its seems like it something that can be done quickly. But since there is a certain moment to crush your throat, I want to master the trick with a good feeling.
Q17: What would be doing if you weren’t an idol?
I’ve been learning dance since I was small, but maybe I’d have become a lazy girl. I think I could have an enjoyable life living normally, but the fun is different now comparatively after all. Therefore…perhaps a lazy girl? Or since I’ve always been doing Taiko, perhaps I’d have persisted with Taiko.
Q18: What are you most into right now?
ASMR are audio fetish videos, I like watching those videos. Also, popping boba foods. It’s been trendy recently, they’re like ikura but a bit bigger, sweet version. Covered with a sweet film, there is juice inside of it. It’s really delicious, and the sound of the bubbles popping is also really good. I’m into looking into good sounds, now.
Q19: Who do you get along with in Hello! Project? Tell us of a recent episode! I often talk with Ikuta Erina-san (Morning Musume ’19) and, everyone in Juice=Juice. Juice=Juice have been on stage with Ame no Mori Kawa Umi, from that time we’ve gotten along. Ikuta-san pays attention to BEYOOOOONDS, and she has talked with us. I’ve gotten hand me down clothes from her.
Q20: What is an idol to you?
People who give everyone dreams. I often hear stories of those watching videos of idols when you’re tired after work. At that time its not a dream, after all I don’t think it could heal the tiredness. You understand that you’re getting tired in reality but, I think its fun as its like a dream and you’re floating. If its like dreaming in those terms, I think that it was my dream to be an idol since elementary school. Since I also thought that I wanted to become an idol, I think it would be nice to give a dream on the other side of it too.
