Ahhh summer, this is a challenging time of year for me. I prefer cool cloudy days or winter. I have been getting up at 4:30 to beat the heat & get my work done (also not a morning person) I am weary of the bug patrol, squishing by hand various insects & snails or the the delightful handful of squirming Japanese Beetles in my hand as I race to where my bucket of soap later resides. This morning I questioned my sanity as a gardener, I could be at the beach instead. I am finally heartened by my first raised-bed garlic harvest! Dreams of winter soups, garlicky dilly beans, & good bread slathered with roasted garlic renewed my gardening conviction! We have growth! From top left, we have some scraggly Buttercrunch lettuce (we reseeded); turnips—seriously happy, despite the lack of rain; some gorgeous peppers seedlings; kale. Regarding the peppers, they were a wonderful find. This garden is strictly organic. It’s a part of a larger, privately owned farm which needs to keep its organic certification. I’d written off finding organic seedlings, aside from the ones grown by fellow gardeners, since most nurseries sell commercially grown plants. To my surprise, I found a nice variety of certified organic seedlings for sale at my local farmers market. Windham, Maine had been without one for a few years, and I am so happy to see it’s returned. Super small, right now, but hopefully more vendors will join in. Anyway, to make the peppers perfect, the six pack I bought was a variety pack. Can’t wait to see what they produce!

I did not think I was going to get ANY #peppers, because these poor plants seemed so sickly and stunted, but they've been growing steadily and it looks like we're getting little pepper buds now.
