So this piece is the “Pemaquid at Noon” and it is a 12 x 20. I like that shape canvas because it allows a little bit more of the composition fitting with the broad spaces that the sea provides. I’d actually like to do a very large pieces with the ocean vista. But one has to have a client first so I’m working on it. So yesterday I painted out on Pemaquid Point LIVE with the Plein Air Painters of Maine. I was a little late because I had a zoom meeting in the morning. I did a live session and painted a piece that resulted. They won’t let me post it to the IGTV but I’ll post it later today on my website. I shortened it down to 28 mins 🤷‍♀️ I often say that painting is like meditation you look at the surface then you look deeper than you look deeper then you look deeper and you get a greater understanding as you go. And not everybody is at the same level and that’s OK. It’s also a metaphor for life in general. First you look at the big picture and you can see all of the ocean and all of the sky and the rocks and then you break it down into smaller and smaller parts. Color and line and the composition and the way you want to focus your attention. And then you start working on the niggly details which would be like the tasks you would probably have in your day-to-day life but if you concentrate solely on the little niggly details you miss the big picture. Notes on the day: The parking lot was completely full, people were having picnic lunches and sitting on the rocks and watching the ocean. I slipped in between a couple of other artists who were already painting on the rocks. I didn’t interrupt them. It was a beautiful day as you can see and perfect weather couldn’t have asked for better. Light breeze and Cool air and yet warm enough that I didn’t have to wear my jacket. A lot of people milling around. I will put up this piece on Pemaquid at Noon when is finished and put it in the AR viewer on my site. The lighthouse at the nice State Park in Owlshead , Maine. It might just be the photo, but the process shot looks better then the second image after I got it into the studio and worked on it a little bit. It looks like I changed the shape of the lighthouse, although that definitely wasn’t a plan! The first image is darker, and has higher value contrasts. It’s always hard to judge a photo online, because different screens show a painting differently. I find it helpful to take photos of my artwork, and then use that information for touchups. Anyway, I can always bring it back. 8 x 12” or 20 x 30 cm, oil.
