With only 300 Maniq people left in the world, meeting this elusive tribe was a truly extraordinary, once-in-a-lifetime experience. This unknown group, often called the last black tribe of Thailand, is rarely heard of

A Brief Look at the Thai Mani People
Tumblr media
The Maniq or Mani people are an indigenous hunter-gatherer society, found in the Southern areas of modern day Thailand.
Tumblr media
They traditionally live nomadic lives in the forests, living off what they can hunt and forage for. Trading goods and moving around as necessary.
Unfortunately deforestation and mono farming has threatened their traditional way of life.
Tumblr media
The Mani people are thought to be related to the Semang populations of Malaysia. Both groups have dark skin and curly hair.
Sadly, these people have faced various forms of discrimination over the years and have been given colloquial names which refer to them as being savages.
Khanung
In 1906, an orphan Semang boy was sent to the Thai court where he was perceived as an "adopted son" of king Chulalongkorn.
Tumblr media
In Art
In the Lakhon Nok dance drama, Sang Thong, the disguise the hero dons is traditionally supposed to resemble the Mani.
Tumblr media
In 1906 King Chulalongkorn wrote a Lakhon Nai dance drama called Ngo Pa, which is inspired by his visit to the South, where he encountered Semang people.
Tumblr media
In the recent Thai drama Beyond Destiny, there is a character who appears to be Mani or Semang, although it has not been explicitly stated.
Tumblr media
I haven't finished the drama yet, so far her character is cute, if a bit childish. I am hoping she won't just turn out to be comic relief.

I just watched Raya and the last dragon. Although it is by no means perfect there is a very positive aspect I'd like to point out: representation. I was so happy to see the directors did their research and included characters of all shades, with different features, highlighting the ethnic and cultural richness of Southeast Asia. For a moment, I thought they had forgotten to represent the indigenous people of Southeast Asia, until...
Tumblr media
Let's not forget who the first inhabitants of South and Southeast Asia were.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Semang, Malaysia.
Tumblr media
Maniq, Thailand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aeta, Philippines.
I encourage everybody to investigate about these original people, their history, culture and struggle.

Surrounded by low-hanging clouds, mud and chickens in a village deep in the northern hills, a young woman tells me, “We are not Thai and we try not to be Thai. Sometimes I find myself talking to my family in Thai and I think, ‘No, try to be Lisu’”. Katima is an activist and member of one of Thailand’s myriad ethnic minorities. The Lisu people are spread across Thailand’s northern hills, deep into north-eastern Burma and southern China. They are a stateless people with language, culture, religion and practices that are completely distinct from any of the national states that envelope them.
Down the road sits the local government office. Built around 20 years ago, it marked the first formal governing presence in the lives of the local people. “When I was a kid, we used to have no hospitals, no schools, no government,” Katima tells me. Today the office is coated in flags and murals dedicated to the monarchy and nation-state. Those who work in the office are not locals, but Thai people brought in to govern the Lisu population. The same is true of the teachers in the local government schools: Thai civil servants assigned to teach the national curriculum. There has also been a concerted effort to build Buddhist temples in these more remote areas, which serve to supplement and eventually replace the animist spiritual beliefs held and practised by the local people.
This extension of the state is a clear and direct plan originating from 20th-century policies of ‘Thaification’ formulated by the central government. Beginning in 1933, dictator Plaek Phibunsongkhram oversaw a massive nationalist overhaul of the state’s relationship towards ethnic minorities. Notable policies included harshly enforcing the Thai language in the education system, reinforcing the relationship between the monarchy and population, and issuing the 12 Core Values—a kind of nationalist guide to ideal ‘Thai’ behaviour, ways of living and etiquette.
Another young Lisu woman, who wanted to go unnamed, describes government involvement in Lisu life as a negotiation. “We accept some of the things the government offers us, like schools, hospitals, temples. But we are still Lisu … The defiance is at home and in the community, where we will continue to do our customs and live our own way of life. We won’t really assimilate”. Most local people don’t feel the government has any influence over them.

This blog will stop using BIPOC as a term. Instead, we choose to simply differentiate between Black and Non-Black Indigenous people as African Diasporic peoples are unnecessarily excluded from Indigeneity in American Indigenous discourses. This also reaffirms the Blackness of other Black Indigenous peoples such as Indigenous Australians, Papuans and Melanesians who experience the existential realities of being Black and are institutionally/systematically racialized as such as well.
Black Indigenous Peoples:
African peoples sans Colonizer groups such as the Boer and Arab Colonizers. [TL;DR Though this gets complicated on the Continent itself. Priority should be given to disparaged groups left outside of dominant political structures in African states: Khoe-Sān Peoples of Southern Africa, the Forest Peoples of the Congo/Central Africa (pejoratively called py*mies), the Amazigh of the Maghreb and Northern Africa (pejoratively called Ber*ers) ] ; [Also, it is important to note that not all African ethnic/national groups identify with Indigeneity. Though all African peoples are in a sense Indigenous to the Continent, not all have adopted a politic of Indigeneity especially if they are the dominant ethnic group of their respective nation-state. Even further, settler-colonial states such as South Africa or the many settler-colonial states in North Africa have an added layer of complexity with the prominent presence of foreign settlers (The English/Boers and Arab Colonizers respectively). Example: In South Africa prior to European colonization, Bantu peoples colonized and displaced Khoe-Sān peoples but then both were colonized by Boer and English peoples. Both the Bantu descendants and the Khoe-Sān can be considered Indigenous in this regard but disparities still exist between the two groups as a result of Bantu colonization.]
African Diasporic Peoples. (This includes Diasporic Descendants of Enslaved Peoples, Afro-Creole Peoples (who also tend to be included in the group aforementioned), and Refugees and Immigrants from the Continent.)
Indigenous Australians (Mainland Aboriginal Australians, Torres Strait Islanders, Aboriginal Tasmanians).
Papuans of the Island of New Guinea.
Melanesians of Melanesia (literally, "Islands of Black People").
South Sea Islanders (Melanesian Diasporic Descendants of the Blackbirding Slave Trades of the 1800s).
Indigenous Austronesian Black Peoples of the East Indies [Pejoratively called Negr*toes: this includes the Andamanese (of the Andaman Islands, the Semang and Batek (of Peninsular Malaysia), the Maniq (of Southern Thailand), and the Aeta and Ati (as well as ~30 other ethnic groups in the Philippines).]
The Beta Israel, Bal Ej and other Black Jewish peoples.
If your respective people do not meet the following existential realities, then you would most likely be considered a Non-Black Indigenous people as far as this Blog is concerned (Colonizers DNI):
The people(s) in question are historically and presently racialized by Colonizers (both White and NB POC) as "Black" peoples.
They have been/are historically and currently harmed and targeted because of that racialization (by both White and NB POC).
Their Blackness has historically and presently been applied and used at an institutional/systematic level consistently.
They embody Blackness more often than not.
They have historically and currently reclaimed Blackness as an identity (both individual and communal), politic and secure mode of cultural exchange.

This meditating woman represents one of the so-called Negrito peoples, an assortment of dark-skinned humans who would be the aboriginal inhabitants of southern and southeastern Asia. Examples of Negrito ethnic groups include the Andaman Islanders, the Semang and Betak of Malaysia, the Maniq of Thailand, and the Aeta of the Philippines.

Probably my new favorite nails I've done on myself. Left hand of Wonder Woman set is done and I'm THRILLED with how they turned out. Turns out, painting on a tiny canvas (my nail!) with the smallest brush I own is a whole lot of fun. Two more nails to adorn on my right hand and then I'm ready to see the movie on Saturday! #wonderwoman #myheroine #galgadot #tinyart #nailart #gelpolish #maniq #moyra #lightelegance #lexygel #nailpromag #3dnailart #sword #lariatoftruth #sugarnail #logo #wearyourart #fangirl #nerdygirl #iwanttobewonderwoman #nailcandychico #quirkycreative (at Nail Candy)
