"Hey little bird-yoi."

You look up from your book, smiling widely when your eyes meet those of Marco, who took a seat next to you at the dinner table. It was already past midnight and the rest of the crew was either asleep or having a party outside. You could hear their muffled voices through the closed door, but didn't feel like joining them today; being too absorbed in the written words of the pages in front of you and maybe also a bit too much in your own head.

Marco though... you didn't mind his presence. Or rather, you craved it, but he would never know. Or would he? You remembered how he would always notice small details that no one else did, like the day you changed your usual hairstyle slightly (he complimented it wholeheartedly) or when you wore that one loose purple shirt and he pointed at you, then at him and grinned from ear to ear: "Partner look".

Partners. You can feel your ears burning up by the thought of it and feel glad about the dimly lit room, covering your blushing face in the dark. The few candles on the table flickered a little.

"Don't feel like partying today?", you ask and hope he won't notice the slight tremble in your voice. Help. After all this time, being alone with him still made you so nervous.

He shakes his head, leaning back and giving you a warm smile. His blue eyes were fixated on you, piercing you down almost with an unfamiliar warmth. What was this feeling?

"Nah. I'd rather be with you, y/n-yoi."

You chuckle. Now that must have been a joke obviously. Sure, 1st Division Commander Marco wants to spend alone time with someone like you instead of all his friends out there. But he did remember your name and oh, how sweet it sounded out of his mouth...

"Why would you say that?", you ask bluntly. It was late, your head was tired and your thoughts were spinning now. Thinking clearly with him around was impossible. Whatever thought you tried to grasp, they all lead back to his lips. How badly you wanted to feel them on yours.

Marco pauses for a few heartbeats, leaning over the table now, closer to you, his face resting in one hand. His glance is fixiated on you, as if he could read your mind just by staring at you long enough. He smirks.

"Because I've fallen for you, isn't it obvious?"

Oh.

All words have left your body. You gasped audibly, which made Marco laugh. His laugh. It was your favorite sound. Your body also must have given up, because all you can do is sit and stare at the phoenix, trying to process what he just said. He would never joke about something like this, you just knew it...

This was when he pulled you closer, hugging you into his warm chest. His arms around you felt like the world collapsing, or maybe it was the weltschmerz that was finally lifted off your shoulders. Underneath his wings you felt safe, protected. Your loneliness crumbled underneath you, but instead of falling you were held with a tenderness that felt like the first rays of sunshine after a stormy day.

Two lovers, two souls. Melting into each other like gold. Hearts wide open.

This was the beginning of a love story.
