OKAY HERE. um. please forgive me if im misinterpreting this bc that is. 100% possible. but.. from what i gather here like. sunny's childhood was pretty good pre incident? he was ultimately a happy kid i feel!! would i say his and Mari's childhood and their parents were perfect? fuck no!! but what im saying is like. i dont think either of their parents were like. insanely abusive as how some ppl portray them as. i think they were flawed people yes!! but not. horrible.

♦ He's divorced. He has the custody of his beloved daughter Mari.

♦ Among his hobbies, you'll find playing video game (as well as making them), speedrunning, taxidermy, clockwork, reading papers about his favourite topics.

♦ You will never find him without a single scratch on his face. He is rather terrible at shaving himself due to his lack of patience.

♦ He is bisexual.

♦ Some would describe him as a plain slice of processed white bread. But some others would call him "The Best Dad ever!" or "My friendly neighborhood nerd-guy <3".

I find it so interesting that Sunny's parents are nowhere to be found in Headspace. The only glimpse of them is the photo in Sweetheart's Castle after it's given to Omori by the Keeper, but Mari's a pretty large character in Headspace and it's her who Sunny killed. Logically, she would be the face he tried to forget about most- or go the other way and remember everything admirable about her as a result of his guilt, which he does. Sunny glorifies her in his memories, denying her death and his guilt, but he blocks out any recollections of his mom and dad. Maybe it them seemingly splitting after Mari's death, Sunny's family falling apart even more, multiplied his guilt but it began to manifest itself in the only was he knew how to. He forgot the bad, and refuses to think about his parents in his dream world.

What I find equally intriguing is that it's Hero and Mari who take up the roles instead. Mari offers Omori & co. a place to rest and recover, somewhere to eat food, get better and ask for advice. She acts in a parental manner to the younger kids, and while this could just be her older sibling instinct showing, she does seem to fit into the role of Omori, Aubrey, Basil and Kel's mother. Likewise, Hero offers warm meals and looks after them, healing them and getting them out of sticky situations. He's protective and mature, older than the rest of them and taking them on as his responsibility.

Also, he makes dad jokes and acts like an old grandpa sometimes. The foe facts journal adds so much more fun traits to the HS gang that we otherwise don't get to see

Idk if this has been theorised before, but it's also possible that Sunny's father appears in HS through Daddy Longlegs. The hat/ hat rack and 'daddy' part would indicate so, and it's interesting that a shadowy, faceless, tall figure holding a light and wearing a hat helps Omori get closer to Black Space & the truth. If Sunny hasn't seen him in years and is potentially mad at him about the divorce, he might have blocked out his father's face, only recalling someone guiding and tall with a hat on their head lol. DLL looks like a shadow- like a hole that needs to be filled, a missing space. Like how Sunny's dad is missing from his home

lil tidbit about rainy au (bc unfortunately it wont appear in the fic unless i change my mind):

while for some aus its fun to write mari's dad as a piece of shit, in this fic he mourns his son deeply. he favored mari in the past, which is something he regrets to a fault. something like 'if i paid more attention to him, he'd still be here.' he isn't home very often, as he usually tries to get away from this house that feels too empty. when he is home, he drinks a lot and hardly pays attention to his daughter

mari's mother is no longer here, by which i mean she hung herself two weeks after sunny's death. she saw Something Else constantly, reminding her of her mistakes as a mother. she grew obsessive and belived she was doing what sunny wanted her to, since she saw Something Else as her son.

So I did another redraw/recolor of real-world moments in Headspace (OMORI)!

I did variants with Omori over Sunny and the unused DW Sunny over Sunny.

Left - This is the Omori variant.

Right - This is the Dreamworld Sunny variant.

some notes:

aside from basil's parents' general design and the implication that they're busy and rich, everything else about his family outside of his grandmother is cat's headcanon!

the flowers assigned to each family member are olive blossom (oliver), dahlia (dahlia), sea aster (oliver's father), goldenrod (elijah), rosemary (rosemary), and azaleas (basil's grandmother)

the flowers in the last part represent the people (new and old) in basil's life!

dahlias are in the same family as daisies and sunflowers!

basil's dream of his family tree/garden is inspired by the meadow in headspace

spirit mari takes the form of her 15 year old self to basil, as he never wants to turn away from the truth again

thank you again for the patience and encouragement as we worked on this!! i honestly wouldn't have gotten through this much work over the months if i wasn't in love with what cat wrote, so i hope you enjoy it! 🫶

I dunno man I just feel like if you're writing Dean as being a good dad to Jack but writing John like he just spent all his time drop-kicking his kids who hate him for it then maybe you are. Mmm. I don't wanna say doing it wrong because that's not what I'm going for but like. I'm just saying there are parallels. That's all I'm saying. And if John isn't worthy of a pass then neither is Dean.
