Treating the problem of anorexia nervosa from the parents' perspective, Rosler presents a mother and father speaking about the tragedy of their daughter's death as a result of dieting. The conversation turns toward the irony of self-starvation in a land of plenty and toward the international politics of food, where food aid is used as a negotiating tool. Confronting a serious issue, Rosler simultaneously sets into play the confessional form and the ghoulish staginess of talk show dramatics.

BACK IN THE BOOKSHOP: ON THE EVE OF THE FUTURE : SELECTED WRITINGS ON FILM BY ANNETTE MICHELSON (2017) • The celebrated critic and film scholar Annette Michelson saw the avant-garde filmmakers of the 1950s and 1960s as radically redefining and extending the Modernist tradition of painting and sculpture, and in essays that were as engaging as they were influential and as lucid as they were learned, she set out to demonstrate the importance of the underappreciated medium of film. On the Eve of the Future collects more than thirty years’ worth of those essays, focusing on her most relevant engagements with avant-garde production in experimental cinema, particularly with the movement known as American Independent Cinema. • This volume includes the first critical essay on Marcel Duchamp’s film Anemic Cinema, the first investigation into Joseph Cornell’s filmic practices, and the first major explorations of Michael Snow. It offers an important essay on Maya Deren, whose work was central to that era of renewal and reinvention, seminal critiques of Stan Brakhage, Hollis Frampton, and Harry Smith, and overviews of Independent Cinema. Gathered here for the first time, these texts demonstrate Michelson’s pervasive influence as a writer and thinker and her role in the establishment of cinema studies as an academic field. • The postwar generation of Independents worked to develop radically new terms, techniques, and strategies of production and distribution. Michelson shows that the fresh new forms they created from the legacy of Modernism became the basis of new forms of spectatorship and cinematic pleasure. • “Annette Michelson is one of the most brilliant minds that has ever turned its focus on the art of cinema. It's a blessing to have her illuminating, inspiring, and informative pieces available in this volume.” —Jonas Mekas, filmmaker and writer • Available via our website and in the bookshop. • #worldfoodbooks #annettemichelson #themitpress #octoberbooks #marcelduchamp #stanbrakhage #hollisframpton #harrysmith #jacksmith #mayaderen #josephcornell #michaelsnow #jeanlucgodard #martharosler #andywarhol (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)

👁 Eye spy with my little eye something beginning with...Martha Rosler! This photomontage is from her series Beauty Knows No Pain, or Body Beautiful (1966-72). She exposes the everyday absurdities associated with femininity found in magazine ads and other mass media. In particular, she highlights the time specificity (60s American anti-communist mindset) within this piece as the peeping eye is BIG BROTHER watching you like a hawk. However, more subtly, the eye also here represents not just that of the State but that of “culture looking at every woman, even in the privacy of her own ‘sacred space’, the American Bathtoom.” 👁 ———————————————————— Martha Rosler, Vanity Eye (Bathroom Surveillance),(1966-1972)

Martha Rosler, balloons (House Beautiful: Bringing the War Home), “photo-montage”
This is a collage of photos from a single magazine in which a man holding what seems to me like a dying baby, is placed in a domestic setting of a living room with happy balloons.
This contrasts two scenes from the exact same time and makes the viewer think about what the media portrays and how art reflects different aspects of the actual physical world.

NEW IN THE BOOKSHOP: THE USES OF PHOTOGRAPHY : ART, POLITICS, AND THE REINVENTION OF A MEDIUM (2016) • The Uses of Photography examines a network of California artists whose experiments with photography during the turbulent, transitional decade of the 1970s opened the medium to a profusion of new strategies and subjects. Working within the framework of Conceptual art, these artists introduced urgent social issues and themes of everyday life into the seemingly neutral territory of photography, producing works that took on hybrid forms, from books and postcards to video and text-and-image installations. • Tracing a crucial history of photoconceptual practice, The Uses of Photography focuses on an artistic community that formed in and around the young UC San Diego, founded in 1960, and its visual arts department, founded in 1968. Artists such as Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Allan Kaprow, Martha Rosler, and Allan Sekula employed photography and its expanded forms as a means to dismantle modernist autonomy, to contest notions of photographic truth, and to engage in political critique. The work of these artists shaped emergent accounts of postmodernism in the visual arts and their influence is felt throughout the global contemporary art world today. Published in association with the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. • Edited by Jill Dawsey Texts by Judith Rodenbeck, Benjamin Young , David Antin, and Pamela M. Lee Artists include David Antin, Eleanor Antin, John Baldessari, Jean-Pierre Gorin, Helen Mayer Harrison, Newton Harrison, Louis Hock, Allan Kaprow, Fred Lonidier, Babette Mangolte, Martha Rosler, Allan Sekula, Lorna Simpson, Elizabeth Sisco, Phel Steinmetz, Carrie Mae Weems. • Available via our website and in the bookshop. • #worldfoodbooks #theusesofphotography #davidantin #eleonorantin #babettemangolte #martharosler #fredlonidier #johnbaldessari #gaag #allankaprow #helenmayerharrison #newtonharrison #lornasimpson #allansekula #carriemaeweems #louishock #jeanpierregorin #phelsteinmetz #elizabethsisco (at WORLD FOOD BOOKS)

Women House expo minute

Magical night of queer art film Maya Deren, Yvonne RAINER, Carollee Schneemann (who said the “success” was causing her to have trouble working) Martha Rosler (who have a generous and heartfelt answer “slowness and looking and seeing” to my question to these women What is sexy to you now?) and the inimitable @barbarahammer1 who brought the evening together with Ms Hartounian. To see #semioticsofthekitchen with a full house on a big screen? It’s so fun when you get laugh with humans instead of on your laptop or with headphones on a small screen at a Museum! It’s Fucking hilarious. And all of #fuses - honestly I could have used a bit less dick, just now, in our current cultural moment I never had a problem with it before- I noticed the painting on the film more than ever. Epic to be in the room with these trailblazers. As I am diving into my first film I am more convinced at how I need to let myself be intuitive- surrender and resist “its a balance,” said #martharosler . I’m healthier every day, but also more “normal.” The otherness that cancer brought, that extra layer of mortality, is slipping. There are parts I want to keep. These women and their work are kept in heart and groin and gut. #lesbianexperimentalfilm #feministart #love #fuckcancer #queerartfilm
