On This Day in History
On March 24, 1953, Her Majesty, Queen Mary, died peacefully in her sleep after a long illness. She was Queen Consort to King George V, mother to two kings, and grandmother of Queen Elizabeth II. The cause of death was attributed to “gastric issues,” but modern sources believe she succumbed to lung cancer. She died 10 weeks before Elizabeth II’s Coronation.
