Do you have any "headcanons" or ideas for soul eater lore, that even if not official, do sound right to you?

Black Star does see Sid and Naigus as parental figures. 

Creating a zombie is actually pretty complicated, hence why we don’t see many others in the series and why Lord Death called in Stein. My headcanon is there was some contingency plan to create zombies in case Lord Death needed one–and Sid volunteered, because he didn’t want to leave Black Star on his own. 

This wasn’t my headcanon, but I agree with ones by others that Liz and Patty probably have different fathers.

This probably isn’t headcanon, so much as using evidence from the text: Tsubaki is only able to use Masamune’s Uncanny Sword form due to their familial connection–seeing as Spirit said how parents and children can soul resonate so easily, so it makes sense that one person can use their sibling’s weapon form so easily. And Liz and Patty are able to wield each other very well, too. 

There are numerous other death-themed restaurants and shops in Death City.

There are other civic leaders in Death City, like a city council, who are more attuned at overseeing city operations, including tourism. 

Before Free became the last survivor (aside from Alone in the video game Monotone Princess), the Immortal Clan included various “breeds,” similar to different types and species of wolves and dogs. 

Blair had siblings. I don’t think they had her magic abilities or the ability to talk. I don’t think things ended up well for them.

when i say that soul eater episodes 10 and 11, the episodes where tsubaki goes to fight her brother masamune who is on the verge of becoming a keshin, are the best episodes of any show ever to air on television you best fucking believe i mean that shit. nobody was doing it like her. from start to finish that episode had it ALL. black star tells tsubaki about how he comes from a family of assassins who had their souls taken by lord death who then took him in because even if his family were horrible people who would do anything for money, black star was a baby who had done nothing wrong. when tsubaki feels like she needs to tell him something about masamune in return for his openness, he tells her she doesn't have to say anything until she's ready. this is a character who up until this point we have believed to be nothing but a selfish ego maniac who is nosey as fuck and now we're seeing that, regardless of how he acts, he cares so much about his partner and puts her feelings above all that shit. and then we get to see tsubaki go and fight her brother and while black star can't do anything to help, he watches her and gives her encouragement even though she can't hear it, and during this entire ordeal he is getting beaten by villagers who saw his clans tattoo and assumed he was there to kill them. and he does nothing to stop them until they go to touch tsubaki and then he says if you touch her, i'll kill you. IF YOU TOUCH HER. I'LL KILL YOU. OUGH. and don't forget that while black star is waiting patiently for tsubaki, she is fighting for her life and thinking about how black star has made it clear to her that even if her name is tsubaki, she isn't a scentless camellia blossom who will die a tragic, plain death. he made it clear to her that she isn't boring and she isn't a nobody and that her thoughts and feelings matter and she doesn't have to be strong all the time. i'm just. oh my god. oh my god im insane. and THEN WHEN SHE GETS PULLED INTO THE SWORD AND BLACK STAR THINKS SHE'S DEAD. AND HIS FIRST INSTINCT IS TO DEMAND SHE COME BACK AND CONTINUE HER PERFORMANCE, TO DEMAND SHE GIVE THEM ALL AN ENCORE. and then when she DOES come back HE ASKS HOW SHE IS AND HE CAN TELL SHE'S LYING WHEN SHE SAYS SHE'S FINE SO HE TELLS HER TO COME GIVE HIM A HUG. AND SHE STARTS SOBBING AND APOLOGIZING BECAUSE HE'S THERE, COVERED IN BLOOD, BECAUSE HE WAITED AND WATCHED OVER HER WHILE SHE GAVE HER PERFORMANCE. Remember that time in the Soul Eater anime where Black☆Star and Tsubaki went to Japan to visit Tsubaki's family? And remember how Black☆Star flat out told Tsubaki's dad that he would follow the demon path if that was the best way to gain more power?

And remember how Tsubaki heard this and prayed to Masamune's soul for help because she didn't want to lose her meister to the sword as well? And remember how Black☆Star was eavesdropping and heard this and went outside to look at the stars and think about his destiny and then basically told Tsubaki "you are the best part of me" and Tsubaki was like "Pfft, don't be dumb, we both know you're the best!" And remember how Black☆Star entered the Uncanny Sword one last time to face the Will of Nakatsukasa and ended up choosing the path of the Warrior because he wanted to take up the burden of everyone the sword had conquered? And remember how he looked back to Tsubaki and told her THIS?:

Tsubaki : G...Gomenne...It has to be the way it is, Black Star. Here's the reason. (Puts fist on heart) I don't care about being a warrior or heroes, all you care about is the legacy. Why do we humans thinking that being weapons were always tools to the devil, only to protect the legacy!? Hibana : You pushed yourself too hard to be hero, all that hatred have brought into the outcome that Shinra did, even though, you did manage to be the star of a hero. Today's not your day, kid. It's time that you need to face the harsh reality of living in the real world, or cease into nothingness.

Xion : It's your honor for a hero's farewell. Tsubaki, would you do the honor of sacrificing a warrior? It's your destiny.

Tsubaki : But I...But I...

Hotsuma's voice : Remember, it's a promise. Sacrificing the one's you loved will make the pain go away. This is your only option, fates cannot be changed.

Tsubaki : ....Yes, I guess this is the promise. And I respect that.

Hibana : Was that Hotsuma's voice? Now I remember, Hotsuma said something about sacrificing a loved one.

*flashback*

[Reminiscence - Masaru Setsumaru]

Hibana : Hotsuma, what did you told Tsubaki about?

Hotsuma : Personally, it's better to wise that she is Akujiki's new wielder. That girl has potential to become a warrior. She has to fulfill her destiny, she was once married to a man named Kurohagane, a well-trained Shinobi that Tsubaki fallen in loved with, that acclaims to be the machine that is today. The machine that you faced with before.

Hibana : And is that possible, can Akujiki really be the only thing to kill someone that is in love or married? Can all fates be worse or not, wether they've been sealed to carry on in our hands.

Hotsuma : We all do respect, that is needed to be done.

Hibana : Whatever you say, Hotsuma. Who should sacrifice a loved one that is good enough to be a warrior in ending their life?

Hotsuma : There can only be one wielder of Akujiki that is strong enough to sacrifice their loved one, and that person is Tsubaki Nakatsukasa.

*flashback ends*

Hibana : Now I finally understand, Hotsuma was planning this to kill a warrior who had been friends with Inky Albarn. It's best that this kid has been obsessed with with the complex of a hero and warrior. The differences between those complexes were trying to develop their selves as human heroes to protect the Kusakabe legacy.

Tsubaki Nakatsukasa : This is my farewell gift to you, a gift of serving your fate... It's the end of the road, the end of our friendship has been concluded. (Pulls out Akujiki and is about impales Black Star through the heart) Sayonara.

*DBZ SFX : STAB*

Black Star : [deathly grunt and vanished into nothingness]

Master Xehanort : [chuckles] He was a great warrior that lived in the darkness for so long, but in the end, he finally showed his purpose of living in the shadows and had finally made his tale to reach to the end. You surely knew that how you enforced yourself to kill the ones you loved, consuming the hearts with despair that you grief. Sephiroth had it figuring out that killing the love ones or sacrificing them was for the sake of others that had theirs to take care of.

Tsubaki Nakatsukasa : So, this was all of Sephiroth's plan, just to make us consume our hearts and souls with despair? That's what this is about? Now I lost the ones that I loved dearly, And now I'm all alone, but I got friends that can cheer me up! So die now!

Master Xehanort : Stubborn, assassin. You have really no idea what you're dealing with. The battle for Demon Vibe's galactic conquest has just begun! Take a look for yourselves!

Ventus/Roxas : What are you talking about? What's something different in your plan?

Axel : Uhh, Roxas. But haven't you noticed before you say "Him and what army"?

Ventus : Why would I want to ask a question like that?

Ventus/Roxas : ....(realizing) Oh no!

Xion : Glad that you can say that!

Master Xehanort : And now, show Kingdom Hearts what the powers of Demon Vibe that can swallow the universe whole! Tsubaki Nakatsukasa : You won't get away with this!

Ventus/Roxas : Not if I can help it! (Attempts to attack Master Xehanort, but he teleports and appears again) What?!

Master Xehanort : It's no use, my friend! You can fight one's heart and one's darkness. But if you and your friends, Aqua and Terra, would able to return to their senses, then I suggest you'll make things better when you defeat the members of the Kusakabe family. That is what you promised to save humanity from the faces of true ultimate evil! (Laughs evilly before he teleports away)

Ventus/Roxas : Yeah! Right back at ya!

Axel : Let's get this goose a payback!

okay so hear me out, an au where masamune doesn't die but gets recruited by arachne instead and partners up with mifune because he can turn into a katana and mifune wields katanas soooo. and mifune has a strong soul so he wouldn't have to worry about masamune possessing his soul. a perfect match if you ask me. then in the anime after the whole arachne battle masamune could get recruited as well as mifune. yeah this would mean no enchanted sword mode for tsubaki but i think she'd rather have her brother than enchanted sword mode.

Thoughts on Tsubakis brother as a charchter? Do you think his arc could have been explored more deeply or atleast the effect killing him had on Tsubaki?

(That we have to call him “Tsubaki’s brother” shows how limited an impact he really had on the plot, doesn’t it?)

From what I remember, there are just two instances where Masamune has any impact on the entire Soul Eater series: the arc with his fatal fight against Tsubaki, and the Baba Yaga Castle arc where we see how his death affects both Tsubaki and Black Star. And that’s really not enough. 

I’m not going to act like this should be the totality of Tsubaki’s characterization, constantly going back to her brother’s death as influencing every decision or thought she has. But as someone who is still not getting over the death of a close family member, I’m not going to act like that death is not something that stays with you forever–it’s just the intensity of that feeling and whether you notice it at any given time. 

(We could debate whether Masamune counts as a “close family member” to Tsubaki when I just said he has only two moments of impact on the entire story. But that’s a flaw of Soul Eater overall: for all of the correct decisions to not let stuff like Maka’s mother overshadow the entire plot, at the same time not even showing Maka’s mother throughout any of Soul Eater was a mistake, and just this absence of Tsubaki’s family throughout the story, not just Masamune but also her father and her unseen mother, is such a weird exclusion.)

I understand that stopping the plot for another arc around Tsubaki may not have worked with pacing: Soul Eater is largely focused on the progression of Maka (and to some extent Soul), Kid, Black Star, and Crona, with all other characters mostly satellites around those four in service to developing them. And that sucks for Tsubaki, when so much of her development does feel like it’s to help Black Star’s progression. It definitely works: Masamune is that grim example of what Black Star could have become. But it is an opportunity that the plot progression hindered. 

So, ideally, if the manga’s plot couldn’t do it, then you just needed an off-shoot to give us that story about Masamune. Light novels are always an option. If you had a bigger budget, there could have been a film, an OVA, a stage play, a plot for a video game. But that would depend on a story that makes Masamune’s presence necessary, and I don’t know what that could be. (If it was me, it would be a story showing just what exactly Tsubaki’s mother was up to that she wasn’t home for her and Black Star’s visit–maybe a flashback arc that could show more about her along with Masamune so we get a sense of how he turned out how he did, and maybe a bit more how Tsubaki turned out how she did. I did just say that sometimes characters are used to develop other characters, so I don’t mind using Masamune to help develop more about Tsubaki.) 

But to answer your question: it’s hard for me to think about Masamune as a character, when there is not much to that character beyond what he contributed to the plot. He has suffered from feeling overshadowed and unappreciated, giving into his dark side, so all of that makes him a foil to Black Star, an idea of what he could have become. He’s pretty much the opposite of Tsubaki, in terms of goals, personality, and appearance, so he reinforces how kind and supportive she is, as well as her resilience to take on family responsibilities and the Uncanny Sword in ways that he could not. 

And yes, we needed more about the effect his death had on Tsubaki. She literally incorporated his soul into her, as one of the souls she “ate” on her way to turn into a Death Scythe–and it just doesn’t come up aside from these two moments, key moments to be sure, but small in number and overshadowed by bigger moments for Black Star and other characters. Like, think what her experience could also tell us about the typical weapon’s experience. You just consumed a soul: what is that like? We know the Will of the Nakatsukasa persists in Tsubaki because she took on Masamune’s soul–but is there anything left of him, at all, in that soul? Any memories or emotions? I’m not saying it has to be like that, as you can have a death that has some finality where there is nothing of Masamune that is coming back, leaving Tsubaki with that grief, best encapsulated by that scene of her crying and cradling his soul in her arms. But it is just weird to not get a bit more about him, if just in service of Tsubaki. 

I mean, we saw Liz losing her mind at the thought of ever having to fight Patty–we couldn’t give Liz a scene trying to talk to Tsubaki about this, if not to help Tsubaki process these feelings, then to show how Liz can’t process that idea? (And that’s not even getting into denying us a scene of Monica Rial and Jaime Marchi bouncing lines off of each other in such a scene.)

When you board the plane headed for Shibusen, your brother doesn’t come to see you off.

After landing, you get a call from your father telling you that he packed his things and vanished while the rest of the family was bidding you farewell.

Good riddance, you don’t think. You are silk hiding steel. You are a weapon. You are a camellia blossom.

You were tired of playing ball.

Shibusen is strange, and your classmates stranger. The EAT class is filled with child soldiers, but they are all more child than soldier. They’re all younger than you, in both years and maturity, even your meister. Especially your meister.

You act more like silk than steel here, as that seems to be the part of you your meister needs most. Despite all the things your clan told you, a weapon is only as dangerous as its wielder.

You relish it and hate it in equal measure.

When you get mad at your meister, you can yell at him without feeling guilty or cruel. You don’t do it very often, but the option is always there, and that makes all the difference.

one other very big upside to reading blackstar and tsubakis bond as a sibling dynamic is bc it lets you draw some really fun parallels between tsubakis relationship with blackstar and her relationship with masamune. they're honestly kinda similar, except in that when blackstar is weaker than her he makes so much effort to catch up whereas masamune just kinda wallows in self pity and I think that's super interesting
