Hi, I just wanted to say, I love all of your Bakugan AU so much! It sounds like so much fun, and I love all the art you made for it.

Also, I have a question about that part where the Bakugan are basically incomprehensible without the assistance of certain technology, how is this affected if the Bakugan evolves? Or, can Bakugan evolve in this AU?

to answer your question, yes, bakugan can evolve in this au. their energy signal changes/gets stronger, so whatever visual interpreting program is used processes this accordingly...

however, the way these bakugan get the power to "transform" is by siphoning power from their fights. in the legaseries masq mentioned that hydranoid is super powerful because of the sheer number of fights he was in.

think exp lol (in nv, bakugan are unable to evolve when battling because they had those machines that collected the exp instead to keep the bakugan in ball form. once they destroyed the controllers the bakugan are able to evolve)

this means that, if you collect exp through less powerful opponents, your bakugan evolves slowly, with the bakugan slowly developing new physical features instead of all at once. in masq/hydranoids, case, i'd imagine a new head slowly growing more after each victory, rather than one growing spontaneously.

however, if you suddenly beat a powerful opponent, like if drago won a battle against the top brawlers in that 3v3, and that exp pushes the bakugan into a new form, it can develop quickly, similar to what we see in the original show. this would be why, to speed up hydranoids evolution, masquerade targeted shun, because by oneshot-ing skyress it would provide an explosive amount of exp that would trigger an evolution almost immediately.

[Chap 1]

-Berdly and Noelle stumble across the dark world via the library, however the area they go into is not Cyberworld as the dark world portal they entered is tied to the books there (Alice in wonderland being one of them).

-The cyberworld they would come across later is tied to the school's computer lab.

-Lancer gives the duo a shitty and inaccurate retelling of the prophecy that Ralsei constantly tries to correct, but is always interrupted by either other characters or circumstances.

-Seam overthrew the Spade king for trying to imprison Jevil for "Looking like he'd turn evil." He did not in fact, turn evil, but he's not the best royal advisor due to just not being cut out for the job. He's still a fantastic jester though.

-Ralsei's more of the actual royal advisor even though his actual title is royal chef/baker.

-After being overthrown, Spade king makes a living selling random junk he and Lancer find together. He hides the fact he used to be the king.

-Roulx Kaard, the former royal advisor under Spade's rule, "mysteriously disappeared" after Seam took the crown. If Berdly shows him a jar of worms, Spade will warn him, Noelle, and Lancer about Roulx. "I was right that one member of my court would be corrupted by the Knight, I was wrong about which one, I'm just glad I managed to get it under control before things got out of hand..."

-Roulx Kaard drops a Rapier of Guidance (+5AT +5 Magic lets you take an extra turn if Kris uses their first turn to CHECK an enemy) when defeated via violence and a Rule Kard (+3AT +3DEF +3 Magic) when defeated via sparing him.

[Chap 2]

-Swatch, the ruler of the cyberworld, has taken a liking to Susie's violent nature and wishes to take her under his wing to 'refine it from senseless violence into properly conducted violence'. She on the other hand thinks he's boring and wants nothing to do with his mentorship.

-Kris on the other hand, Swatch doesn't know what to make of them.

-While exploring the cyberworld and getting separated from Lancer and Noelle, Berdly meets up with Susie and the two have to solve puzzles together to progress (which Susie dislikes, but at least she appreciates that solving them is faster with Berdly, being controlled by the player.)

-Also while alone, Berdly comes across 'TM'; this weird kitten-like creature that looks like one of the tasqs, but is nowhere near as tall or as stable as them...

-After fighting her, she insists that he comes to the cat cafe in the scrapyard, and that he comes alone....

-From there, the NEO Tasque Manager sidequest begins.

-In the Mansion, Spamton and the Addisons are living it up as the mansion's butlers/guards.

-Queen wasn't overthrown, she just put Swatch in charge to run a really fancy Acid bar.

-Tasque Manager drops a Shocking Whip (+10AT -5 DEF turns all healing spells into electrical attacks) when defeated via violence and an Order Masq (+5 DEF +5 Magic, doubles damage done to chaotic enemies) when defeated via sparing her.

My main blog -> @leechiourdes Hi, my name is Leech (or Anatoly), I like to talk about countryhumans. My headcanons are very irregular to say the least and differ a lot from the greater fan community, so I wanted to document all of them using this blog as a sort of headcanon archive, because the idea sounded fun and was very cute. My headcanons encompass two AUs, however this list may expand as more AUs are created:

1.) The Main AU / Primary AU In this AU, the countryhumans are very tightly kept government secrets and the public is unaware of their existences. They have multiple fake identities, they move around often to avoid being noticed by neighbors or friends, and in general the only things constant in their lives are eachother and their jobs.

2.) The Broken Masquerade AU (or just Broken Masq.) This is sort of an alt-history spinning off of the Primary AU. In this universe, the countryhumans are known by the public and are a very normal part of daily life. They have been normalized in the consciousnesses of the people, and are just more public figures that they like to follow or worry about.

There is a lot more to these two AUs and how countryhumans in my headcanons work in general, but I will be sharing those in different posts. If you're interested, please follow and show support. Thank you very much!

“Didn’t you go to an elite private school for a while?” 

“Saint Thornton’s, yes,” Logan says, his voice as lowered as Janus’ as they narrowly avoid a couple twirling a bit more enthusiastically than the crowded ballroom allows. “Why?” 

Janus smiles easily at the couple, a placating gesture that dissolves as soon as they turn away. “Just wondering why they never added ballroom dancing to the curriculum.” He spares Logan a quick onceover, mismatched eyes flicking up and down, and the eyebrow visible outside of his mask quirks up. “You clearly could have used it.” 

He either misses the glare Logan levels at him from behind his silver mask, or he simply ignores it; either way, it takes until Logan intentionally steps on his foot for him to grit his teeth and mutter a small “I was joking, you prick,” under his breath, as close to an apology Logan will get. 

A stray dancer, a young girl in a pink dress that oddly resembles a cupcake, nearly runs into them, mumbling pardons as she picks up her skirt and makes her way through the crowd. They barely spare her a glance; the music picks up, and they’re back to focusing on stepping in time with the crowd, on blending in with the pairs of oblivious partygoers and the one imposter, not unlike themselves.  

“Instead of insulting me,” Logan says after a moment of dancing, pointed enough for Janus to roll his eyes, “you could actually be looking for our culprit, so we can get out of here sooner rather than later.”

“But insulting you is so much more entertaining, darling.” 

Another glare Janus ignores, opting to hum along with the music instead of paying attention to Logan’s frown. “Well, then think up something actually clever and get back to me.” 

It’s Janus’ turn to glare, but as pairs break up and partners turn to new ones, Logan just offers him a brilliant smile and pushes him toward the nearest dancer, the girl in the pink dress (who still looks lost, though it melts into relief once Janus takes her hand and sweeps her into a dance with one last withering scowl at Logan over his shoulder). 

Logan wastes no time in taking the first free hand near him - a young lady with brilliantly red curls piled on her head, in a dress that’s a rather alarming shade of green - and setting off into a waltz. The girl is shorter than him, even with her hairstyle, and as they exchange small comments, Logan is able to look up and over her head around the ballroom, eyeing the other guests in small, sweeping glances.

“I love your suit,” the girl says sweetly, cheeks rosy with a smile. “You like stars, I take it?” 

Logan smiles back and hopes it’s not as stiff as it feels. “I do. I studied astronomy for a while,” he adds, and the girl raises her eyebrows, interested enough in the sentiment to miss the way Logan’s gaze catches on a tall, surly figure across the room, practically sulking in the corner, “so they’re something I know, at least.”

“Oh, that’s wonderful! My sister used to study astronomy, but she’s more of an a musician these days. Perhaps you’d like to meet her still - you might get along well, and she’s looking for a suitor-” 

“I’m afraid I’ll have to refuse on that front.” The man in the corner brightens suddenly as a woman in a deep blue dress comes to him, taking his hands and pressing a kiss to his cheek as they set to dancing together. Logan sighs to himself and begins to search the room again.

“Oh, you’re taken?” 

“Hm?” The girl is looking expectantly up at him, hazel eyes curious and wide. “Oh, uh- not exactly, just-” 

“Not interested?” she fills in, a knowing smile pulling at her mouth. Logan gives her an apologetic nod. “No worries. I feel she’s rather interested in the harpist in her orchestra, anyway.” 

His eyes land on a stone-faced woman near the stage, speaking to the man next to her with their heads together. Her dress is elaborate - her bodice is laced with jewels, her skirt draped in shining satin layers - and the clutch in her hands is held shut tightly, drawn in to her chest as if she’s guarding it and its contents; she seems, by most standards, the type to buy a stolen masterpiece. 

“Well, I wish them the best in getting together,” he smiles to the girl before him, and she brightens. 

“What about you, then?”

“What about me?” 

“Do you have an interest?” She glances around the ballroom, craning her neck as Logan figures out what she’s asking. “What about that fellow you were dancing with before me? With the dark hair? Oh, where did he go-” 

“Oh, no,” Logan says quickly. The woman near the stage sighs, obviously relieved, then climbs the steps toward the band and speak in low tones with the singer before they begin to switch spots - Logan resists the urge to curse under his breath. Another false lead. “No, that’s just my partner.” 

The girl blinks at him slowly. “...Partner?” 

Logan blinks back for a moment. “Oh! No, no, not- not like that, of course, my- uh, work partner. We work together.” 

“...Oh. Of course. Of course, your... work partner.” 

They’re both silent for a minute - there’s a little smile on the girl’s face, a little too knowing for Logan’s liking - as they dance, as Logan sweeps the ballroom again and finds his gaze caught on Janus’ golden mask and dark hair a few pairs of dancers away; he’s listening to his dance partner, his normally easy smile growing bored as she chatters away. Logan stares at them for a good minute before his own partner says, breezily, “Well, he’s a handsome fellow. If you don’t want him, let me know.”

Logan looks back to her, and a tiny laugh catches in his throat as he realizes what she’s suggesting. “Oh, of course,” he smiles. “I’ll keep that in mind, um...” 

“Nicolette,” she smiles back. 

“Right. Well, Nicolette,” he says as the music switches tunes, prompting another partner switch, “it was lovely meeting you. I’ll be sure to tell my partner he has options should he need them.” 

He offers Nicolette a small bow that makes her laugh, and she pulls away, waving to him as she goes to find another partygoer to dance with while the music is jaunty. He watches her go for a second - she goes to a gangly boy with wild curls and a suit that seems a size too big, who greets her with a brilliant smile - and after a moment, he turns to where he saw Janus last, carefully avoiding single dancers who try to offer their hand as he makes his way through the crowd. He can see Janus and the girl in the pink dress together still; she’s talking with a bright grin on her face, youthful and overly enthusiastic, and Logan nearly laughs at what Janus’ internal monologue must be in his predicament. As Logan gets closer, though, the urge to laugh falters. 

Janus’ waning smile, which had seemed bored from where Logan had been only moments ago, looks something closer to confused, something bordering on a frown as the girl talks. And she’s close, Logan realizes - she’s pushed her skirt back to get near enough to Janus to whisper, their waltz posture thrown aside for conversation. Logan stares at them, pausing for just a moment, but the girl looks over suddenly, her eyes meeting Logan’s, and with a final smile and whisper to Janus, she turns on her heel and prances through the dancers around them, disappearing into the crowd.

Logan hurries his way to Janus, hastened by his confusion. By the time he reaches Janus’ side, Janus is still staring after the girl, fiddling with the edge of his sleeve absentmindedly.

“The buyer’s not in here,” he says quietly as soon as Logan is close enough to hear.

Logan blinks at him, furrowing his eyebrows. “What? How do you know?” 

“They know we’re here. Not just us,” he clarifies, “but the others, too, and I don’t think they’re happy about it. They put a damn red herring in here to distract us.” He nods after the girl, his mouth a taut line. “They’re probably trading the art as we speak.” 

“Jesus- of course, that’s just what we need tonight. Fantastic.” Logan lets out a frustrated huff, running a hand through his hair and looking for the nearest exit. “We should get the others - we might still be able to catch them before they’re done trading, as long as we hurry-” 

“I can’t,” Janus says. 

“What?” 

“I can’t hurry.” His words are oddly slow, Logan realizes, like he’s focusing on getting each one out clearly, and Logan feels his eyebrows furrow again. 

“What are you talking about?” 

Janus takes a deep breath, slow and forcibly even, and manages to grab Logan’s arm and drag him to the nearest door as Logan realizes he’s growing pale.  "Don’t make a scene,” he says through grit teeth as they exit the ballroom and stall around the corner of the doorway.

“Janus...?” 

And then he looks down, as Janus’ arm shifts from where it’s pressed across his middle, his gloved hand moving away from his side, teeth grit and expression stiff with forced calm. 

And Logan’s stomach drops as his glove comes away painted red.

Hi hello I am obsessed with your Bakugan AU omg. Love the new spins you’ve taken on the characters, grounding them more in reality! :D (and the wide diversity in gender identities and orientation is wonderful.) It’s also super interesting to see them aged up so they have jobs/higher education to be worrying about and such, it adds an interesting element imo.

Could we hear more about Alice? What’s her life like outside of Bakugan - did she work with Mikhail or have a job/education of her own? Does her whole deal with Masquerade differ at all to canon? (I always hated the way they just kind of write him off soon after the reveal instead of exploring how Alice deals with it more. One episode is not enough to fix the trauma, lmao, c’mon guys.)

YOOO THANK YOU SO MUCH I'm so happy you like it!!!!! These characters basically grew up with me so I love projecting aspects of my life onto them!

I'm also so glad you asked about Alice cus the show did her dirty in both the first and subsequent seasons. To be revealed as such a menacing threat and one of the big bads, only to be demoted to a side character and then a picture on a screen is simply insulting for the best character ever in Bakugan.

So basically my Alice grew up with her grandfather, who's field of physics requires him to study in remote and distant areas with no phones, no wifi, no outside signals (I think some places that communicate with satellites out in space are built in the middle of bumfuck nowhere because you really can't have electronic interference). As such, Alice grew up extremely sheltered, passing her days by playing with imaginary friends and reading books (favorite was alice in wonderland, wouldn't you know it).

In Russia, she didn't get a job nor did she go to university; she was a quick study and with the books (and harassing Mikhail) she kind of became a physics prodigy. She was a homebody with anxiety and agoraphobia, only comfortable with the familiar and the safety of her bed. That is, until Mikhail disappears. Somehow she finds the courage to leave her home and go to a whole new country to find where he ended up. She sees and meets more people than she ever thought possible, and grows to like it.

She gets a job at Runo's family's cafe, where she meets all sorts of people, and gets introduced to the Brawlers. I'd like to think that she takes a couple uni classes before Vestroia destroys the fabric of reality. Between S1 and S2 she actually goes to school and speedruns getting a PhD. When we see her after a timeskip she has short hair and is going into a program for dimensional physics (not yet a real program). She works in tandem with Marucho and Mikhail to monitor and maintain the dimensional rifts required to sustain Bakugan's existence in their universe.

As for her connection with Masq I like the idea that Masq was the manifestation of her negative emotions (Silent Core n allat). In this case, her being so drawn to the battlefield clashes with her belief that the game is dangerous; it's the cause of her grandfathers disappearance after all. Her general shyness and fear of the unknown prevents her from reaching her true potential. The Silent Core separates her desires from the ones she embraces and the ones she wants to reject. Enter Masqerade, the embodiment of her desire to battle! Stripped of everything except bloodlust, this form answers to the Silent Core and fucking wrecks the leaderboards because guess what, Alice is actually a very good brawler!

While Masq is fucking shit up, Alice is left in the dark. Her different aspects remember different things, have different abilities, but are fundamentally the same person. As the leaderboards settle and people start losing their Bakugan, Alice's fear of battling increases until Masq is nigh unstoppable. It's until a little scuffle with Exedra where his image flickers...just a little bit...to reveal a very scared woman...

Anyway basically Alice has to embrace her desire to kick ass and becomes one with Masq. Sounds corny and probably is but you can have her accept this part of herself slowly, like picking up battling, which weakens the Silent Core's hold on her, until the final fight where Masq collapses afterwards to reveal that it was her all along! Hydronoid recognizes her as his true master and a new player - Alice Gehabich replaces Masquerade as the number one player! She's still pretty shy (I don't like how people treat introversion as something they need a character arc to get over, some people are just like that smh) so her media appearances are few and far between. However, you can reliably catch her on the battlefield maintaining her number one spot.

Also in New Vestroia Alice replaces Marucho because I cannot fathom for the life of me why he was taken on the trip of a lifetime while my girl, who used to be the NUMBER ONE PLAYER IN THE WORLD, MIGHT I ADD, stays inside the house and babysits some alien.
