Disability Pride Month and BG3!

It’s Disability Pride Month! And you know what that means, right? No? Well it has been ages and I’ve long been casually planning a series of short (maybe) essays around the parallels to disability - and the clearer disability representation - throughout Baldur’s Gate 3 in both the characters and the story. So what better month than this to finally work on them and bring them out?

Whilst I do have some personal lived experience with disability, this doesn’t account for every type of condition or all the ways that different disabilities affect so many of us. Two people with the same condition can have quite a different lived experience, and even the condition itself can vary significantly. So what I mean to say here, loves, is that if you have a differing opinion, or there’s something I’ve missed, or you’d just like to add your thoughts - please do just that! 

I welcome hearing from all of you about how you relate to the game through your own lived experiences, and what the characters can mean to you. Representation isn’t always clear, but honestly I think when we look closer we can see parts of all kinds of experiences reflected through the characters and story. So, what I intend to do is create a series of essays, looking in depth at the potential parallels we can see in each of the main companions that I’m most familiar with (unfortunately I don’t know Minthara well enough to include her in this, but I would welcome input from others!) and then perhaps some of the other characters. These pieces are not meant to be diagnostic in any way, or claiming “this character has this illness”, but instead is a look at how the characters and their stories and details can be similar to real world disability and health, and how different people might find ways to relate to their experiences through this. Links will be edited in here as the essays are completed!

Lia's Disability Experience

As a little peek behind the curtain (and for full disclosure that I'm not an abled person here to talk over disabled experiences) without giving you too much of myself on the single plate, my lived experience is with an unpredictable chronic pain condition as well as a few other chronic illnesses and disability issues. I'm a wheelchair user, partially ambulatory (essentially I can shamble around in my home with assistance but outside the house I rely on my wheels), and my most prevalent symptom is constant pain. I have made vague references to these things in a few works and the experience does provide me with some fic inspiration for a couple of works. I'm far too familiar with Loviatar's embrace, but I feel this is something that can be used to my advantage at times like these where I can examine the characters and storylines from angles that abled people might not consider.

I really would love to hear from all of you - what other characters do you feel reflect some of the lived experiences of disabled people? Are there any that you connected to? Did you find the game was accessible for you to play as a disabled person? What do you wish you saw more of in the game or in games in general? This month really is an important one for awareness and understanding, as well as finding things in ourselves to be proud of that don't fall into the categories of "inspiration porn" or the kinds of internalised ableism that can drive some of us to push too hard to work against our conditions instead of with and around them leading to more issues.

Remember - The Disabled Community is the one minority that anyone could become a part of at any time. Advocating for our rights could also be advocating for your own future or that of a loved one.

Rika Headcanons Master List:

Rika goes by pretty much any pronoun doesn't mind if you call them a he/she/or they.

Rika has a green thumb and loves gardening.

Their favorite genre of music is ska or alternative but they don't mind listening to a little bit of everything.

Their first Pokemon was a Paldean Wooper which is now a Clodsire and her ace.

Very prone to displaying public displays of affectionate, either romantic or platonic.

Went to a tough school in a bad area growing up .

They put on a facade of being tough and smug to survive.

Rika dislikes makeup and prefers to show off their natural looks.

Their full name is Paprika, but much prefers to go by just Rika.

Rika is a massive foodie despite their lanky frame.

Enjoys making people laugh or relax.

Even the most shy people eventually feel comfortable talking with Rika.

Has a very earthy and motherly vibe to them. Despite her farcical nature, Rika is a lot more wise than she lets on.

Loves kids. She will happily babysit for anyone.

Rika loves ground types because they remind her to stay grounded and firm with their beliefs.

Her childhood was chaotic so the symbolism of ground types reminds her to take one day at a time.

Rika loves to tease and to push buttons, but never out of malice.

Despite their goofy nature, they have a strong sense of justice and will not hesitate to get physical to defend people they love.

Rika loves simulation or farm raising video games.

Highly competitive when battling. Rika will become very pouty if she loses.

It's nearly impossible to lie to them due to their strong BS detector.

They are bisexual, but have a slight preference for women.

Kinda a hypocrite due to the fact they love to tease, but if someone teases them back, they become flustered.

She keeps emergency Clodsire plushies for kids who need some positive reinforcement during interviews.

Often uses Clodsire as somewhat of an emotional support pokemon for people who have anxiety due to his relaxed and dopey nature.

Rika can be a little bit too cocky sometimes, especially when battling

Butchers common sayings on purpose.

Used to explore caves when they were younger.

She is into body modification due to her piercings.

Prefers to dress masculine because it's more comfy to her.

If anyone she cares about is sick, she would rush over to check on time multiple times bringing soup and blankets. No questions asked.

They smell like the earth and the ground after it rains.

When in a relationship, they can be possessive and "claim" their lover by leaving marks from bites.

Rika prefers to be the dominant one in the bedroom, but doesn't mind switching occasionally.

Is an adult-child and has a horde of Wooper and Clodsire plushies at home.

Got into many fights as a teenager.

If anyone is crying, she would run up to them and offer them a hug without hesitation.

They find it hilarious that people think they're a guy at first glance.

Rika has a hard time thinking abstractly. She is definitely more of a practical thinker.

Ik people talk about the tragedy of the Spinjitzu family, but i mostly see it focused on Lloyd and Garmadon which isnt bad, but also you’re sleeping on the tragedy for Wu and the FSM.

FSM -> Was a dragoni child raised in constant war who had to choose between family. Probably was a child soldier himself if we’re being real honest. Chose none of them and ran away. Idk how you come out of that w/o trust issues.

Hell, the trust issues was implied with Nineko and the way he doesn’t tell his sons much. Why would he? To do that he needs to tell them about his past, which means trauma dumping on his kids. He’s emotionally constipated. Can’t say it but does love his sons and the land he created. He fights to defend it and despite his past, longs for a world where he doesn’t have to fight anymore. Longs for peace.

However, his eldest son is hit with a poison he can’t cure (probably due to the overlord’s interference now that i’m looking back on it.) but he does his best to find what he thinks may work. He helps him through his episodes and tells his sons where he thinks the cure may be. But it still ends in disaster.

Wu -> Raised with high expectations. Probably under a lot of stress to keep up. I’m thinking gifted child/burn out. Loved his father, looked up to him but unintentionally copies his father’s unhealthy coping mechanisms because he thinks his father is the best. Doesnt realise his father probably struggled with his own internal issues with trauma. Did therapy exist 1000 years ago? Probably not.

Anyway, he watches his brother fall victim to a poison and blames himself for it (ignoring the fact he was what. 9???) Makes a lot of mistakes (Aspheera) but tries his best to fit into the mould of expectations.

Probably represses a lot of emotions. Anyway, he goes on to watch his brother descend into darkness (watches him go for chen at some point) and fights along side him for ninjago until suddenly he’s fighting alone against his brother after his friends in the elemental alliance slowly leave.

He falls in love, but shes also someone his brother loves. His brother marries her and he tries to move on. He raises Morro until morro leaves.

At this point, he’s lost his brother, father, friends and now a boy he raised. Then he gets a nephew only to find said nephew has to fight his father.
