Collective Sephora & Ulta Haul - August
Hey doll hey! How’s your day/night going? Swimmingly I hope. I know it’s been 12 days since we last spoke. I’m so sorry. I have been having a world of hurt with this most recent fibromyalgia flare. I knew I was headed for a big one with how brutal this heat has been this month. When it comes to weather related flares the 2 big triggers for me are the coldest month of the year and the hottest…

The Ultimate Character Design Tournament
Please remember to vote for characters solely based on their design, rather than which character you are more familiar with or like more!
Characters and propaganda under the cut!
Inosuke Hashibira | Demon Slayer
Tumblr media
While I don’t vibe with all Demon Slayer designs, I think the design of Inosuke and specifically his /mask/ is absolutely peak. The way it’s beady, jutting eyes are places and the way it makes you doubt for a second if that’s actually his real head- it lends itself to looking either goofy or downright manic and menacing depending on what the scene calls for. It’s so cool! MAN I love Inosuke
Death | A Matter of Life and Death
Tumblr media
Rosalina | Super Mario Galaxy
Tumblr media
Space motif. Color palette pretty. Emo bangs. Heck yeah.
Kamado Tanjiro | Demon Slayer
Tumblr media
His basic demon slayer core design is so incredibly iconic. Each character in the main cast of Demon slayer has specific associations with colors, and green just really fits this character. The design takes who he was before joining the core (the green representing his relatively slow farm life) and who he's become after (The black being the same color as his blade). Another plus is a lot of the red relates back to his family and the reason he's fighting at all.
Alma | Gokurakugai
Tumblr media
Eufimia Montefiori | OC
Tumblr media
Eufimia is my own OC, and the design was made by my partner (adapted from an old design) !! It has a lot of story significance which I will shorten as much as possible Eufimia comes from a very poor home and works as a ghost hunter along with her sister, who is an exorcist. Eufimia was the one to start the business, and she runs it with the intention of getting lots of money from rich people so she can move herself and her sister out. ANYWAYS!! Her design is intended to display exactly how deceitful she is, if you know her lore. She dresses up in extremely fancy clothes and adorns herself with anything that looks expensive to come across as if she's trustworthy to the upper class. In reality, she's very shady but for a good reason (in her opinion). To emphasise the aspects of herself she hides, she hides her right eye due to an injury she sustained heavily damaging it. She's hidden this fact from everyone including her sister, due to the injury coming from someone who was willing to expose her shady business. Anyway erm. pretty vampirecore gf design
Snowball | Neko Atsume
Tumblr media
Luz Noceda | The Owl House
Tumblr media
Duo | Duolingo
Tumblr media
This one speaks for itself.
Wen Kexing | Faraway Wanderers/World of Honor
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
look he has some fantastic outfits with such a wide variety and yet they all so perfectly encompass his character? like he's got outfits for pretending to be a spoiled young master and he's got outfits for being an unhinged mass murderer and they all suit him so well. like he just has so many different outfits for so many different occasions and they're all such good outfits. he's got outfits for his housewife era and outfits for skinning someone alive and they're all good and fit his character well

It’s time for Smash Bros. worldbuilding!!
The Smash games take place in an alternate/in-between universe where powerful figures from around the multiverse are warped to duke it out.
Master Hand has trophies/statues of the various fighters. At any time he desires, he can swap the trophy for the real thing— that is, wherever the person is in their own universe, they suddenly begin to turn to stone. Meanwhile, in Smash-world, the trophy suddenly begins to turn into flesh (or whatever the fighter is made of) as their consciousness is transported. It is unclear if the trophy and the fighter swap places, or if the trophy is just turned into an exact copy of the fighter’s body that their soul is then put into.
Master Hand can alter or play up his fighters’ powers a bit, but he likes to stay at least SOMEWHAT consistent with what their usual deal is. He’s not gonna give Mr. Game & Watch laser eyes. (He also makes them all much more resistant to injury and pain.)
Master Hand creates the battlefields by simulating parts of the worlds his fighters come from and then sort of “copy-pasting” together different elements from them for the main battleground. That’s why so many of them float in midair (and have a different layout than the place they supposedly are).
MH has multiple trophies of each fighter. If he wants, he can bring more than one to life at once, by sort of splitting the fighters’ consciousness between them (a very unsettling experience). The duplicates can move and act of their own accord, but since they only have a sliver of the original’s soul, they don’t have personalities beyond very shallow, stereotypical imitations of their source. A Mario duplicate, for instance, is probably just gonna say stuff like “Mamma mia!” and “I’m number one!” over and over again. (The fighters also have the option to just wear different outfits if they feel like it.) This was a precursor to a more ambitious experiment of Master Hand’s: Dr. Mario.
Master Hand liked the concept of Dr. Mario, but didn’t find it aesthetically consistent enough with regular Mario for his liking. So, in a modification of the procedure used to activate the duplicates, he turned Dr. Mario into a separate character.
Dr. Mario is all of Mario’s medical knowledge put into human form (with a few tidbits of Mario’s past and general personality thrown in to supplement). Unlike the palette swap duplicates, Dr. Mario is fully sapient and can hold actual conversations, as well as have his own opinions and thoughts. This is because the process of activating a duplicate (since the goal is to make a clone) requires an attempt by Master Hand to imbue a part from every facet of Mario’s being into the clone while ALSO leaving the original Mario enough for him not to become a shell of himself (if Mario becomes just as indistinguishably generic as his clones, Master Hand won’t know which vessel to put all the soul bits back into and send home, and that would get messy).
Because of these facts (only exacerbated if trying to activate multiple Marios at once), the different aspects of Mario as a person get spread a bit thin, and the palette swaps end up with only a little bit of each— putting them in a sort of “jack of all trades, master of none” position when it comes to the various elements of “being Mario”.
Dr. Mario, however, is made up of the entirety of ONE SPECIFIC PART of Mario’s mind, so he has a full chunk of consciousness to work with, at the cost of being pretty specialized to that area of Mario’s life and skillset.
When Dr. Mario is active (which isn’t ALL the time), Mario loses all medical knowledge (even basic stuff, so he needs to be kept an eye on), but otherwise has his common sense, memory and other fields of expertise. Conversely, Dr. Mario’s a great guy, but he couldn’t tell you the first thing about plumbing, carpentry, princess-saving, kart racing or anything other than medicine. When Master Hand’s through playing, he just puts ‘em back together.
Mario and Dr. Mario get along swimmingly (to the point of sometimes finishing each other’s sentences) and are often hanging around each other. Everyone else is kinda creeped out by it.
Master Hand later duplicated the “Dr. Mario” process to separate Samus and Zero Suit Samus. However, in this case, Zero Suit Samus is actually the original and “regular” Samus (when the two are split) contains all her knowledge of how to operate her Power Suit. The two Sami also get along fine, but they’re not as exuberant about it as the Marios, so it’s less noticeable and therefore less unsettling to the rest of the lineup. The Links are NOT separations of the same fighter, they’re all grabbed from different points in the timestream.
The splitting process used to create Dr. Mario and Zero Suit Samus is similar to the process that split Crazy Hand from Master Hand. THAT separation, however, was done by their own mysterious creator, so they can’t do anything to reverse it.
If the characters do not begin to fight when the disembodied voice of Master Hand commands them to, the Smashworld will kind of “get into their heads” and make them feel amped up to fight. The world/Master Hand cannot directly FORCE them to fight, but they can sort of be “nudged”. By now, most of them have come to enjoy the tournaments as a way to let off steam where no one really gets too hurt and there’s an understanding that no hard feelings are had afterwards, so they’ll fight of their own accord.
Master (and Crazy) Hand isn’t necessarily EVIL, he just is so, so different and alien that he cannot understand our morality at all and why people might not appreciate being forced to fight, undergoing psychic suggestion to make them want to fight more and having their consciousness split into multiple pieces— which they then also have to fight. He’s very fond of the fighters, and when a serious threat shows up, he will always try to protect them (he doesn’t want them to come to any harm). They all have VERY mixed feelings about him.
Master Hand also isn’t really a “he”. That’s just kind of what everyone calls him but he can’t or doesn’t understand/care about gender enough to “correct” them. Calling it “he” is no more or less correct than using any other pronoun created by humans (including “it”).

can i ask for that luigi's mansion remake rant? i'm genuinely curious about your thoughts on it!! :0
Okay so I will admit I have not played the remake. So like I'm sure it's a good experience for those who haven't played the original, but just from the visuals I have seen of it, I personally think it's a massive downgrade in the atmosphere department. I am gonna put this under a read more because. It is very long.
My primary example of this is just to show screenshots of the foyer
Tumblr media
It's like, fairly obvious they changed the palette, made it brighter, more vibrant, etc. Which doesn't really work when you consider this mansion is based on old timey mansions, its palette shows off its age. Not to mention the lighting. i do not get why they made the lighting yellow. Yellow lighting usually signifies comfort or hominess, as it's associated with stuff like fireplaces or lamps, but white light is a lot more. Discomforting. It's like hospital lighting, you know you're not in immediate danger, but it does not make you comfortable.
Not to mention what they did to King Boo, and I know they did this for continuity and because the 3DS hardware is more limited
Tumblr media
But I just don't think he looks as interesting as his original design. The original game had this green overlay to pretty much everything, like the mansion had greenish-brown walls and stuff, and King Boo's model is actually green. It just kinda made him seem more spooky, as he wasn't just pure white, he was an off white. Plus him being green made his crown and eyes stand out more, and because those are some of his defining characteristics, it actually helped define his appearance (I have. an entire rant on King Boo's designs but that's not what this is)
Again I'm sure this game isn't like. Bad. I'm sure it's a good experience if you've never played the original, but as someone who has the original and has played it more times than any other game I own, I don't know why I'd play the remake over it. The remake jus lacks the atmosphere, and I know that's a complaint levied at LM2 and LM3 as well, but it's worse here because this isn't a new game this is a remake of a game that mastered the spooky atmosphere
And I know people say "they cant make it too scary, it's a kid's game" as if the original game was not made for the same audience as every other game in the franchise, since Mario games are made for everybody, not just children. Also that argument doesn't work when you consider there are much darker Mario spinoffs (*coughs in Paper Mario TTYD and Super Paper Mario. Also Mario and Luigi Partners in Time*).
Also I don't know why they added new rankings to the game, but at least it lets you replay boss fights. I also appreciate the Dark Moon control mode, because the Dark Moon controls do have some improvements, most notably the dodge feature and the strolbulb (makes it easier to see the ghosts' hearts, which I know some people struggle with doing in the original). I also like Gooigi's lore in this game, since he was introduced here and this game is canonically an alternate timeline if you really think about it.
(Also anybody who says LM3DS has the PAL Hidden Mansion mode is wrong. no it does not. The LM3DS Hidden Mansion removes like over half the features that make the PAL Hidden Mansion so insanely different. I have watched an entire video about this, I have a lot of thoughts. I wish i had a PAL Gamecube.)

The SMG Trios of Origins Interrupted
Barry
The protagonist of a block pushing puzzle game called "Blook"
A cute little red square guy with mitten hands, big blocky eyebrows, thick vertical lines for eyes, and a cute little one tooth overbite
In modern day he has a permanent scowl, full eyes with beady pupils and prominent eyebags, and is always wearing a grey fedora-trenchcoat combo. Still has the cute overbite though.
Was originally a friendly, helpful little buddy who cheered the player on, and becoming the Avatar turned him into an insane idiotic asshole like Season 1 Mario.
Due to a lack of positive influences, by the time he managed to get his new personality under control he'd managed to drive away everyone who'd ever cared about him, turning him bitter and jaded
Only found out about all the Meme Cycle stuff after that, causing him to abandon his home universe and set off on a crusade against the SMG Program
Absolutely hates memes, and especially hates that his Avatar status gives him the inescapable compulsion to use them
SMG17 and SMG18
Preferred to keep to themselves, hence why they weren't involved in Barry's life until after he hit rock bottom and began to hate them
They don't really show up outside of flashbacks, so all that's really known about them is that 17 is green and 18 is pink
Ash Ketchum
Since Barry's meddling means he doesn't get memed until near the end of the arc, he acts exactly the same as in canon
Is surprisingly okay with the fact that winning will turn him into a chaotic idiot
Can already use some memes even though he's not the Avatar yet, similarly to how Meggy can occasionally use memes despite not really Getting them
Uses his Unova outfit because I like it the most, but in terms of memories, experience and available Pokemon he's from after the last episode of Aim to be a Pokemon Master
Is 17 because fuck you canon there's no way he's still ten after all that you can't do that much stuff in less than a year. Really even 17 feels like I'm lowballing it a bit, but I wanted him to still be at "technically a kid" age for extra "excuse me what the fuck" points when everyone else finds out what his life is like
Pikachu
Got a little bit zapped by one of the Pods when Barry was stealing them to suppress the Meme Wave so now he can talk and is kind of an asshole
He was really already an asshole it's just that now everyone can understand him
The only meme character in a canon world. Such is life
SMG29
Been alive for less than a minute and already realized she's trans
The Sane One
Is well aware of her sense of humor being tuned to dead memes and fully embraces The Cringe
I'll decide on designs for her and 30 later but do know that she trades her palette swap outfit for something more her style as soon as possible
She does at least keep her hat, which is blue and black with a female Nidoran face instead of red and white with a light blue pokeball emblem
SMG30
MAXIMUM ADHD. Cannot stay still to save his life, even moreso than Ash
Doesn't tend to come up with crazy ideas of his own, but is very much an enabler of everyone else's crazy ideas
Has a bit of a mad scientist streak, which is where most of the exceptions to his lack of crazy ideas stem from
His hat is green and white with a purple SMG arrow pointing up
They both get Pokemon partners after the situation is dealt with, but I haven't picked them yet.

Animated Films of 2023
November 12th 2023 (Blog #6)
I should probably preface this by saying these are the only animated films released in 2023 that I've seen (though there have been 4 or 5 others released in theaters). From the wisdom of Guillermo del Toro, animation is cinema, and I believe we deserve more animated films! After the master pieces that are the Spider-Verse films, as well as del Toro's own version of Pinocchio released last year, we have seen time and time again that this medium is not only for children, and is a legitimate art form deserving of more legitimate attention. But back to your regularly scheduled program...
#3 The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Despite the indescribable success of the Mario Bros. games since their initial release in 1983, no successful film adaptation had ever been made about the series. There was an adaptation, released in 1993, simply and similarly titled Super Mario Bros., though it was... not exactly the same quality as the games were. This long-awaited animated film adaptation did exactly what it set out to do: it had cute 3D animated versions of the iconic Mario characters as they fought against Bowser. It wasn’t spectacular, but it also was not a bad movie. It just wasn’t revolutionary. I do believe that such a beloved franchise deserved a movie that had the same level of cutesy animation that the games provided, and this did just that. This film is a great choice to watch with your family.
#2 Elemental
Disney-Pixar’s newest film did not disappoint. Elemental follows a fire-girl who falls in love with a water-boy. The love story is enticing, but there is a lot going on in the underlying society: Many believe that bad things will happen if different elements “mix”, and the city is informally segregated because of this belief. After the two fall in love, they decide to test it out- how bad could it really be?- and, lo and behold, literally nothing happens. The inability for different elements to mix was based on nothing but fear. The fire-people are the most feared because others believe they could cause damage to other elements, and thus faced intense discrimination and were kicked from their lands. This doesn’t really get a conclusion, but the element-mixing leads to people setting aside their fears for a more integrated city. I think that movies like Elemental are great ways for children to learn about the prejudices all around them. Sometimes, these things are just too difficult for young minds to understand at face-value, so putting it into an analogy like elements helps them understand. There are absolutely some issues to be had with the fact that the elements, which are stand-ins for race, actually are different, but that’s a different critique for a different post!
#1 Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Comparing this film to the two previous films kind of feels like "hydrogen bomb vs. coughing baby". The Spider-Verse films are not only the greatest super hero films ever made in my opinion, but also the greatest animated films. They are so, so gorgeous, it is hard to put into words. Many films have moved away from using any intense color palettes, and are opting for more subdued colors, but these films completely ignore this trend and make what are probably the most colorful movies I’ve ever seen in my life. They look just like a comic book, but not in a tacky way, and not in a way that will age badly, I don’t think. They are simply the perfect comic book movies. This addition to the series not only lived up to expectations set by the previous release (in 2018), but completely blew its predecessor out of the water. Where the first film was inventive, colorful, emotional, and perfectly-comic-book-y, this film did it all 10x better. The only bad thing about this one is that it doesn’t have any kind of conclusion, as it is the first part of a story to-be-continued and resolved in the next release, the end of the trilogy. Into the Spider-Verse (2018) created this world, introduced Miles Morales, showed us what this trilogy set out to do, and introduced the idea of the multi-verse. Across the Spider-Verse (2023) takes the idea of the multi-verse and dives right in, displaying a world of not only 6 or so Spider Men, but an infinite number of them from an infinite number of universes, all in need of protection from collapsing the space-time continuum. I cannot recommend any other animated films as much as I recommend these! (Though I don’t blame anyone for wanting to wait until the finale of the trilogy is released. Its such a cliffhanger!)

The Adventures of Elena Temple: Definitive Edition
by GrimTalin
Price (US): $4.99 (Free demo available)
Included In: Bundle for Racial Equality and Justice
Genre: Platformer
Pitch: A two-button exploratory platformer, presented as if it's a re-release of a monochromatic Mac game.
My expectations: I've already played quite a bit of this. I completed at least one of the three dungeons. By design, it's rather basic, but its puzzle design, platforming challenges, and light exploration successfully scratch their respective itches.
Review:
Tumblr media
Elena jumps, Elena shoots, and most of all, Elena dies. Spikes, scorpions, darts, sawblades, ghosts—death stalks her at every turn. And her gun? It only holds two bullets. It’s less useful as a weapon than it is as a way to break open clay pots and push distant buttons. Which leaves the jump. The fixed-height jump. Ceiling spikes are a problem for an adventurer who can’t help launching into every jump with the same gusto.
Tumblr media
My GIFs do a stinky job of illustrating the points from my written review. Apparently I only thought to capture video in relatively easy rooms. My focus was elsewhere when I was dying 15 times in a row on a single jump.
Yesterday’s review (Adventures of a Radish) was critical of fixed-height jumping and perfect air control. I stand by that. Those actions have no place in a Mario clone. The Adventures of Elena Temple is a different kind of game. Every trap on every screen is meticulously designed around its protagonist’s limitations. There are some button-pushing, teleporter-sequence, conspicuous--wall-shooting puzzles, but it’s the platforming itself that most often makes one stop and think. If those arrows fire at that interval, in that sequence, and the platforms above the spiky floor appear or disappear every time I jump, then how the heck do I reach that coin
Tumblr media
It’s a nasty, brutal game, and it knows it. It taunts because it knows you can overcome. Catharsis feels gooooood.
+ Every element on every screen has been placed with intention and care. + Elena's limited moveset can be understood in seconds. It's difficult to master, but the controls are reliable enough that every death feels fair. + Snagging every collectible isn't necessary, but thanks to rewarding puzzles and a helpful map, 100% completion feels like an attainable goal. I wanted to tick every box, and I did. + Speedrun stats, unlockable cheats and tweaks (infinite ammo, double-jumps, limited lives), and Achievements.
– Holy smokes, I just want to get to the other side of this room. Can you please stop murdering me for two seconds? – Falling down a hole with no way back up except to make an eight-screen trek is annoying. – The whole "play ports of this classic game" gimmick could go. Aside from a palette swap, the game is exactly the same on every platform, and the palettes don't make much sense. Why not use CGA cyan and magenta for the DOS PC? I guess I can accept Mac-resolution, 1-bit graphics on the 8-bit Game Boy, but why is it black on green? Go look at a Game Boy. I promise, you'll never spot a pure black pixel? And what is the point of telling me there's a Game Boy Advance port if it's still using same monochromatic art? Why would I want to play on a minuscule screen?
🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍
Bottom Line: The Adventures of Elena Temple isn't really from the '80s, but if it were, it would be remembered fondly. You modern kids with your skateboards and your Superman movies probably won't understand why anyone would choose this over that dancing game you play with your Net friends. (I want to say Fortnight? I know it's not Mine Craft. Can someone tell me what Road Blocks is? Thx! :) :) ) If you're an old people who would would risk a thousand impaling deaths for a shiny coin, you could do a lot worse.
