the popular take that mat would just beat joey's ass if he emerged from pandora's box is so ... boring to me, on principle, but it's a good platform for something interesting! like, the acknowledgement that the detective ( this guardian angel, as he's now proclaimed ) is so capable of violence that echoes how he was slaughtered before, that he'd raise fists against another knowing the harm it'll cause ... knowing how flesh will break and bend under blows ... it's a passing down of trauma but also a passing down of that anger and unjust feeling! if he attacked joey after everything it wouldn't be an act of just hatred ; it's an act of despair, of hurt, and it'll be about rosanna but it'll be about everything else too. it's about how he's failed to save a single life, again. it's about how he won't be able to sleep at night, not knowing what happened to everyone exactly, not knowing where the rest of his everlock crew is or the exact noises ro made when she died or if anyone tried to comfort people who never asked for this. for revival, for having to prove yourself again after death. it's about the personal, selfish betrayal of it all! that joey left him like a coward and hid far away in a place where mat couldn't reach him. it's the how could you have left me? after everything? after i put my trust and faith into you again? a failure recognizing failure, a broken body finding its mirror image in another mangled body. and it's about how joey would want to lie there and take this beating so bad because he deserves it and he's tired and mat makes him want to be something more than he is, a martyr, a saint, but it's not enough : he'd still weakly fight back, would still claw and squirm, and the hate for themselves would multiply tenfold. they're survivors and this is what they do. mat hurting joey after he comes back is so much more than resentment ... it's love, for everything and everyone, and it's the death of it, and the sickening promise it'll bloom again anyway because joey being horrible is not new. if mat loved him despite this before, he can always love him again. there's just the price of blood first and the vindictive need for punishment, because the detective's been tired of the good guys losing for a long time, and joey's the perfect scapegoat when there's no bad guys around to punish.

Thinking about how the main trios in Wheel of Time are gender swapped foils for each other
Rand and Egwene-Main Character Energy, leadership focused arcs, tasked with reforming broken systems, go through a life changing trauma that follows them for the rest of the story (the box and the collar,) powerful channelers
Mat and Elayne-Chaotic energy, the fun one of their respective trios, always ending up in dangerous situations, somehow both run away with the circus at separate times
Perrin and Nynaeve-Clearly an attempt at the “mom friend” and “dad friend” archetype, but while it works with Nynaeve for me at least it doesn’t with Perrin

By the way if you think Big's knees protested being on that awful tile floor, you are correct. If you think his shoulder started to hurt from the position of his arm and the work of holding Ken's hips in place, you are also correct. If you think he's going to mention any of that to Ken, you are Wrong! That would be too much like inviting vulnerability and we simply Cannot Have That.

I watched Wheel of Time because my crush (goddess) Kate Fleetwood is playing Liandrin in it. And also because people were saying that Mat Cauthon reminded them of Theon. First, Kate is BRILLIANT as always. And YES Mat is very Theony! I see it. I enjoy it. Not completely of course- but no one is ever completely Theon with ALL the aspects- nor should they be! Mat is his own character that I am enjoying thinking about on his own. And there are obviously huge differences in their circumstances. But the vibes are there definitely. But as I watched more of it, another character that I ended up connecting with Theon is Egwene. Did anyone else feel the same?? (@alleyskywalker this was in my drafts when I saw your comments on the gifset I reblogged- so maybe you feel this way too??) Also thinking about how in the show, Egwene is allowed to keep her name whereas Theon is not (though I've heard in the books that is different?) I will also be reading the books soon. I want to watch the whole thing again and then I'm going to start reading the series. There are obvious parallels between the torture of Theon and Egwene but I also think their characterizations have similarities as well. I will probably write more about this later when I get my thoughts together. Just wanted to know if any other Theon fans felt the same about these characters?

Mat dug in his saddlebags as Lan withdrew. He pulled out Rand’s banner, the one of the ancient Aes Sedai. He’d gathered it earlier, thinking perhaps it might have some use. “Somebody hoist this thing up. We’re fighting in Rand’s bloody name. Let’s show the Shadow we’re proud of it.”
Aw hey this makes for a nice contrast against Mat finding Rand holding the Dragon Banner in TGH and resenting him for it versus him raising it to fight on his behalf for the last push during the battle <3
