speaking of algebraic QFT, one of the classic references is Bob Wald's Quantum Field Theory in Curved Spacetime and Black Hole Thermodynamics, which is a wonderful read except that it has possibly the ugliest mathematical typesetting I have ever seen. Chicago was experimenting with upright sans-serif maths, and moreover made a terrible choice of script font and \langle and \rangle

Flying W - Wonder Woman.
Tumblr media
The Winnebago RV used is from 1972 - The logo is called "Flying W" (and in 1986 the Winnebago RV industry established the Flying W program in to recognize select dealers for service excellence and superior customer satisfaction.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know about you but the version of this one in particular reminds me a bit of ...
Tumblr media
They even shot her standing there with this logo in her back. And it's a "Flying W" like "If you want to stop One you will need to fly" again making a connection between One and Max or better: Max is One. One of the good Ones since there are only three Ones in the show: 00I and 0II.
Theres no doubt a strong connection towards Wonder Woman been made in the show.
Tumblr media
That's issue 326 > 3+2+6=11.
Tumblr media
The first issue of The Legend of Wonder Woman (the comic Lucas is reading to Max in the script if I recall correctly) was released in May 1986. Weird, did they want to push Will's birthday to May (Birthday gate) allegedly because it better fits the lip movement? - I doubt that this is an oversight and they didn't use it because it was released much later but another clue left in the script that March and May are interchangeable and there are potential timeline shenanigans in the show.
And since the Duffers like Upside-downs/inversions, just have some fun and invert Max's initials ... Or just the Wonder Woman logo.
Tumblr media
And note that Mike offers El some M&Ms (because he didn't get his break...I mean KitKat) while Max is right there in the background. So MM=Max Mayfield. And certain fonts especially in the Wonder Woman logo once inverted give us different initials.
I guess reflections/Upside-downs/inversions/mirrors are all just a coincidence. There's nothing like this in the show at all. There's nothing to see here, folks! Or is there? That mirror shots are btw like a Stranger Things version of the Sherlock mirror.
Tumblr media
If Henry's shadow is Vecna(Edward?), then Max's mirror is...El. The walkie talkie isn't very subtle. Seriously, I wouldn't do/talk about this if there weren't inversions and mirrors etc in show and it's not even very subtle. Many parallels people talk about are actually mirrors. (Even literal mirrors like the one 00I gets thrown through which then switches the alignment of the shards to give us a mirror of him and the "Zoomer"-El that fights back.) It was the first thing that I noticed and that's what started this.
Oh, and shall we guess who's in room 110? (Just saw it, so take it with a grain of salt but this looks like Maya behind the window.)
Mirrors: 011/110
Tumblr media
So, MM=WW because as pointed out in the comic reading scene Wonder Woman has another name, alias or "alter ego": Princess Diana. Like Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Clark Kent is Superman etc etc
All you need is simple math. 5'6 / 5 6 =??
Tumblr media
Nah, just imagining things.
................................................................................
I do have an idea what the blue hair tie and yellow watch do resemble and mean as an allegory that totally fits the narrative. And yes, it's Wonder Woman linked too.
Had a post some time ago about the Lasso of Truth - and remember the poster for "Dear Billy"? It says "No more lies".
That Unbreakable is an inspo is obvious (and official) and David Dunn's weakness is water. (You know the whole rabies/fear of water thing which I likely will address in another post.) Nonetheless, the superhero coding is there.

Do WordPress Themes Affect SEO? Here’s the Truth
Let’s settle this once and for all — yes, WordPress themes absolutely can affect your SEO.
But not in a magic, overnight-ranking kind of way. It’s more like… behind-the-scenes power moves that either set you up for success or quietly hold you back.
If you’re serious about growing your site and showing up on Google, this is something you need to know — and the good news? It’s not as complicated as it sounds.
Let’s break it down in a simple, no-jargon way.
1. Speed Matters — A Lot
Search engines love fast websites. And guess what? Some WordPress themes are bloated with unnecessary code, flashy animations, or tons of scripts that slow your site down.
The slower your site loads, the more likely visitors will bounce — and the more Google will notice.
💡 Tip: Choose a lightweight, performance-optimized theme. It’ll load faster, offer a better user experience, and help your SEO without any extra effort.
2. Mobile Responsiveness = Non-Negotiable
More than half of web traffic comes from phones. So if your site doesn’t look good on mobile, it’s a problem — for users and for search engines.
A truly responsive WordPress theme adjusts your site layout for every screen size. That means whether someone visits from a laptop, tablet, or smartphone, your site stays clean and easy to use.
And yep, Google gives bonus points for mobile-friendly design. So make sure the theme you pick is responsive by default.
3. Clean Code = Search Engine Friendly
Search engines don’t just look at your content — they also scan your site’s structure and code. A well-coded theme uses proper HTML tags, structured layout, and avoids messy, outdated practices.
Poorly coded themes? They confuse search engines and can hurt how your site gets indexed.
A high-quality WordPress theme will already have clean, SEO-friendly code baked in. That’s why it pays to choose carefully.
4. Schema Markup Support
Ever seen search results with star ratings, prices, or FAQs directly in Google listings? That’s thanks to schema markup — a special type of code that tells search engines more about your content.
Not all themes support this, but good ones either come with built-in schema or work smoothly with SEO plugins like Rank Math or Yoast.
When your WordPress theme plays well with schema, your pages are more likely to stand out in search results.
5. Plugin Compatibility (It Matters More Than You Think)
Most of your SEO magic will come from plugins like:
Yoast SEO
Rank Math
All-in-One SEO
But if your theme conflicts with these tools? You’ve got a serious problem.
You want a theme that’s been tested for compatibility — because smooth plugin integration means your SEO tools can do their job properly.
6. User Experience = Better Rankings
Here’s something a lot of people forget — SEO isn’t just about keywords and backlinks. It’s also about how people interact with your site.
A clean layout, readable fonts, easy navigation, and fast loading times all add up to a better experience. And Google notices when users stay longer and click around.
So yes, your WordPress theme plays a big role here too.
So… What Should You Do?
If you want a theme that supports your SEO goals, look for one that is:
✅ Fast and lightweight ✅ Mobile responsive ✅ Cleanly coded ✅ Compatible with SEO plugins ✅ Supports schema markup ✅ Designed for a smooth user experience
That’s a lot, right? But don’t worry — webxThemes takes care of all of it.
At webxThemes, every theme we offer is built with SEO in mind. We focus on speed, mobile usability, clean design, and plugin compatibility — because we know it’s not just about how your site looks, but also how it performs.
Final Takeaway
So yes — your WordPress theme definitely affects SEO. Maybe not in an obvious way, but in all the small technical and structural details that matter.
Pick the right theme, and SEO becomes easier. Pick the wrong one, and you’re fighting an uphill battle.
Choose smart. Choose something that does the heavy lifting for you.
And if you need a theme that’s already optimized for everything we just talked about? Head over to webxThemes — we’ve got you covered.

Logo or No-Go? : Doodles to Dominance
Tumblr media
The human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text. As a matter of fact, visuals speak louder than words. And why not, visuals can improve learning by 400%.
“Let me ask you this, how many brand logos do you remember?” The logos that popped into your head just hit the bullseye by triggering the right emotions on the spot. This was because of using powerful visuals leaving uninspiring and tedious ones behind. For other brands- it’s time to let brand heritage Rest In Peace.  Let’s unravel the psychology behind the brand's logo - A "Real Deal Breaker.
Before that let’s get today’s reading vibe going - Why don’t graphic designers tell jokes? Because they prefer to show them in a visually compelling manner. Likewise, if you don't pay attention to the following sections, your logo might become the next visually compelling joke of the century.
What could go wrong?
"First Impression is the last impression." This is not true in each case, but do people care to give a brand a second chance with such massive options around? A logo is a first impression of a potential customer. Losing a customer could only be a bad logo away!
What Not to Do!
Typography
Why settle for just the bare minimum when you can turn your text into a pretentious, overanalyzed writing piece?
Typography is the art and technique of arranging type (letters, numbers, symbols, etc.) to make written language not only readable but also visually appealing. Typography involves careful consideration of several elements like font choice, size, line spacing, letter spacing, alignment, and how all these pieces work together to enhance both the functionality and aesthetics of the written word. Let’s understand the importance of choosing the right font.
Choosing the wrong font could make people lose interest in your brand. Imagine a classic serif font for a Toy company logo or an amusement park, won’t that take all the amusement out of you? In a competitive market, having a weak logo could put you way behind. The logo font will scream out your brand's personality like no other!
Choosing the right font is important because the font style evokes a user emotion which down the line helps consumers connect to the brand in an organic way. Below are examples of some fonts dancing their emotions out.
Serif Fonts: Evoke feelings of history, honesty, tradition and integrity
Sans-serif: Those are considered more modern and minimalist
Script Fonts: Resemble cursive handwriting or calligraphy evoking classical or contemporary feel
Ask your brand the right questions - Who do you want to be? Funny, Quirky, Serious, Authoritative, or want to be a fresh blend?
Fig.1
Colour
Brand success is not painted in any single color but why not just “Play safe?”
Choosing the right color is important for your logo. Just a sketchy thought, wearing a red bodycon dress to someone’s funeral. Well pun intended -  How many graphic designers does it take to create a logo? "None, they’ll just spend 10 hours debating the ‘perfect’ shade of blue."
Moving on to the next element, well said “Colors are the silent ambassador of the brand”. Every color tries to set a brand narrative based on the human emotion it triggers. A Canva research reveals the most popular colors used in Fortune 500 brands are blue, red, yellow, purple, green, black, and white. Let’s understand color psychology.
Blue: Evokes Trust, reliability, calmness, professionalism and security
Red: Red ignites feelings of excitement, energy, passion, and urgency
Yellow: Yellow can be an optimistic, positive, and warm affair
Purple: Purple is all about creativity, luxury and mystery
Green: Green is for growth, nature, health and sustainability
White: White is more of an innocent, pure, and peaceful kinda thing
After all color selection is like a relationship, It’s all fun until you realize you have to commit.
Simplicity
Why did the complex math problem get jealous of the simple one? Because the simple one always got the attention!
Blah blah blah… Adding too many details to a logo can result in a design that's overwhelming and less effective. A logo's primary purpose is to be simple, memorable, and easily recognizable. When too many elements are incorporated, it can create visual clutter and make it harder for consumers to quickly identify the brand. Bored, with all that jazz right? When it comes to designing the logo the core mantra should be “KEEP IT SIMPLE SILLY”.
Human Connect
I tried to have a deep conversation with a logo... But it just gave me a lot of empty space!!!
The last but most important aspect of designing a great logo is Human Connect; the brand should instantly ignite a spark between ROMEO (brand) and JULIET (consumer), well you either “IMPRESS” or get a “LEFT SWIPE”. Now that we have established the don’ts, let's understand some Do’s.
The Glory
The beauty of visuals is they are quite self-explanatory
FedEx Logo: The FedEx logo fully demonstrates the use of negative space. See the arrow between the uppercase “E” and lowercase “X”? The lettering is more than a wordmark; it is a creative combination of two blends of two different fonts (typefaces) to create a unique and creative visual identity.  The logo’s design has won several awards.
Fig. 2
BMW logo: The central part of the BMW logo symbolizes the rotating blades of an airplane which depicts the company’s early history of aviation technology.
Fig. 3
Conclusion
Designing a logo is not just about creating a good visual effect but it comes with a long-term goal of building a human connection, value, and personality with the brand. Thorough market research should be done before introducing your brand’s logo because-
A Logo for a brand is the signature of an artist.
In branding, human connection should never be a lost art. Human beings always try to find a matching frequency, what makes you think this wouldn’t be the case in choosing the right brand for yourself?
Don’t fall into this trap where, If your brand says Trustworthy, your logo says Run Away!
Your logo should make you say “wow” not “huh”?
A brand logo should be most importantly “relatable” above anything else.
Learn how to create a memorable and impactful logo that truly connects with your audience. Dive deeper into the art of branding on IMPAAKT!

Project One/Letter Blog
As someone familiar with art in a general sense, I’m no stranger to type in the medium. Though, previously, when I involved types or letters of some sort in my work they were often bubbly and playful. Something similar to simplified graffiti or if I’m trying to get a more polished look, I will attempt to sketch in an almost square-like font as I find it easier to rearrange with measurement lines. It’s by no means professional grade designs, there are always imperfections, but it gave me a slight understanding of what I needed to correct to enhance readability or polish the text into something more organized.
Type is important. Well, specifically letters and the alphabet as it is how people commonly communicate. I believe subconsciously I was aware that type has a greater impact on my current way of life (as I use the computer regularly and on each key there is a letter) and therefore has greater significance in general; however, I don’t believe I truly recognized the importance of type as I do now after reading, “Thinking with Type” by Ellen Lupton.
There were a lot of interesting facts and concepts I had not previously regarded. Though I will admit the reading did overwhelm me a bit. There were a lot of pretty, intricate fonts but sometimes I found the letters to almost blur together—it’s hard to explain. For example, on page 14 (or 16 on the pdf), all the fonts appeared to be rather complicated for me when compared together. I’m not sure if having all that text crammed together on the screen initially startled me or if my brain was briefly overloaded, but I noticed evident strain the longer I looked at the letters. It was like my brain said, “No, we are not reading any more text for at least 5 seconds” and promptly shut down. I could not read strangely.
Well, that might just be a me thing—some sort of processing disorder within me—or perhaps it is normal. Maybe I should approach this like I approach an Intro To Math where something new, complex, and challenging presents itself from the unknown. The brain then says, “I don’t like challenging” and tries to abort. If I plan to pursue Graphic Design, I know I need to overcome this; paying attention to fonts and remembering names will likely come in handy.
While the font was intimidating, the book explained many details about types I had not previously known. I find it very interesting that Italics were used in the 15th century for inexpensive books where humanist scripts were considered the expensive type. The line “...The cursive form saved money because it saved space,” (15, Lupton) really stood out to me. It makes me wonder about the process of printing and what a book would like fully printed in the font. What may libraries look like in that period? It's all speculation on my end.
People initially being hostile to the idea of change in type (gothic script) also piqued my interest. The thought of backlash somewhat reminded me of current times and how change can still occasionally be met with opposition. However, I find it slightly amusing that the rise of advertisement and industrialization gave rise to bold fonts in the 19th century. It makes complete sense. While reading, I found myself more engaged by page 24 (page 16 on pdf) where the designs featured by Vilmos Huszár and Herbert Bayer caught my attention the most. It may be personal bias but I find both fonts vastly appealing and recognizable compared to the previous cursive and other humanist fonts. Both characteristics are perfect for advertisement! Honorable mentions include the electronic types featured on page 27 (page 29 on pdf). I enjoyed delving into that bit of history.
While Project One has begun, I must admit I’m failing to make any strong connections between it and the reading. Where the reading details type, our first project seems to be based on precision and visual recognizability. However, I suppose the idea of visual recognizability holds significance in both my project and type in general. Additionally, the making of type from previous technology also required extreme precision. With this project, students are tasked with learning and manning an Exacto knife to cut paper in the outline of their chosen pop culture artist. The work is supposed to match as closely as possible.
In my opinion, precision is the overall goal and link between my project and this week’s reading. We, the students, are using this Project to learn precision and how to craft accurate replications of our original work. This will help students build skills up to polishing their type—if we get there. Once again, it's all just speculation.
Though, as of now, the Project is quite frustrating. It’s time-consuming and I strongly dislike the finickiness of the Exacto blade. It’s quite tedious. That and depending on the type of paper, cutting is made to be a more difficult process. Especially since accuracy is the goal. One wrong cut might mean a student will be starting over. While I’m a little irritated with my lack of initial progress, I think I can see what the purpose is and how learning the skill will benefit me in the future. For now, it’s trial and error, and I’ll just have to settle with my paper and my trusty Exacto blade.

had to make a poster for my school project this year and it took me like 5 days and i am very proud of it yippeeeeeeeee
(id below cut because it is VERY very long)
[ID: A poster with a light blue background and a lot of text on it. A large, handwritten header at the top says "Original Animated Short Part 1!" with sparkles around "original" and yellow lines around "Part 1!" for emphasis.
A simple cartoon person, Poster Molly, with curly hair and a sweatshirt waves hello. She says, "Hi there!!" The text under her reads:
"My name's Poster (blanked out for personal information)! Some of you might recognize me from last year… Well, I'm back and better than ever!! Last year, my focus was on comics. But this year… This year, I've set my sights on something bigger:"
"Animation!!" in large font with yellow lines around it for emphasis. Poster Molly is underneath, holding her arms up excitedly like she's presenting the word. Text underneath reads:
"I wanted to create an animated short with my original characters, synced to the song 'The Other Side' from 'The Greatest Showman' soundtrack."
Drawings of two characters are underneath. The one on the left has an arrow pointing to it that says, "this is V." It is rendered in slightly glowing cyan lines, with everything inside the lines showing through to the near-black background. It floats mid-air with a smug expression on its face, and has cat ears that seem relaxed. It has three tentacles in place of hair that swoop forward.
The character on the right has an arrow pointing to her that says "and this is Wade!" She is an Inkling from Splatoon, with purple tentacles that fade to turquoise, tied into a ponytail in the back and long in the front. She has a medium brown skin tone and golden eyes, and the top half of her right eye is a bright turquoise.
Text continues: "But that's a big project..."
At the top of a new column, the text continues: "Animation involves a lot of drawing. Don't believe me? Let's do some math... 24 FPS (frames per second) times 60 seconds equals 1440 drawings for one minute!!
To cut down on drawings, animation is usually done on "twos" — a new image is shown every other frame, effectively reducing the FPS to only 12. But that's still 720 images per minute...
The process of creating an animation, from start to finish, is usually broken up into three major stages: Pre-Production, Production, and Post-Production.
First, Pre-production! This stage consists of concept art, character design and development, storyboarding, and pretty much everything else that comes before the actual frame-by-frame animation. This stage is when model sheets, turnarounds, thumbnails, storyboards, and a timed animatic are made. (It's also when scripts, music, and vocal lines are written and recorded — but luckily, I get to skip that entirely!)
Next, the bulk of the work (and time!) goes into Production. Production is the actual frame-by-frame animation, and is usually split into two parts: keyframing and "tweening," also known as "inbetweening."
Finally, Post-production is the shortest stage. It consists of clean-up, coloring, adding effects, and editing. My plan was simple: I'd spend the first half of the year on pre-production, and the second half on production, with about a month left at the end of the year for post-production.
At the top of a new column, Poster Molly scratches the back of her head apologetically. "Hoo, that was a lot of information! Back to the fun stuff..."
Text below her continues: "Around the end of December, I realized I wasn't very far along in the storyboarding process. I only had the bridge finished, which was about a minute and a half long — less than half of the full song! Considering my original plan was to have the storyboards done by the end of January, that wasn't good…
So, I decided to change up my timeline, turning it into a two-year project instead of a one-year project. I'd spend this year working on pre-production and storyboarding, and next year on the actual production and post-production of the short. That gave me much more time to get it all done. Now I wasn't tied to a schedule designed for college students with twice as much free time as me, and I didn't have to sacrifice quality to get it done on time!
Even if I'm only drawing a new, very simple image maybe a couple times a second instead of all 12, storyboarding is still a lot of work! I've had a lot of fun storyboarding and seeing my characters come to life, but it's definitely been tiring. I've had to leave my comfort zone as I try to push the poses and perspective to create something more expressive. Here you can see all (or almost all) of my storyboards for the second half of the song's bridge. It's a lot of work, making these stick figures as energetic as they are!"
A collage of 40 different storyboards is below. They are heavily simplified, with each character being little more than a stick figure with a simplified expression. Text below continues:
"Even with all that time, I'm still not quite done with the storyboards. I plan to finish them over the summer, and dive straight into production next year! Hopefully, this time next year, you'll all be watching my complete, fully animated short!"

1,16,19 for the writing ask :)
1. What font do you write in? Do you actually care or is that just the default setting? When I’m writing on my phone in the notes app, it’s the default. When I’m writing on my computer in Microsoft, it’s Times New Roman, size 12 font, and double space. I typically write more on my phone though because notes doesn’t keep track of word count or pages so it’s always a surprise when I do transfer the final project to Microsoft.
16. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever used as a bookmark? Answered this one here.
19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going? Okay, let’s see…
Ever since I was little, I had stories. I told them in the games I played, the toys I owned, and even talking a dental hygienist’s ear off as they cleaned my teeth. My mother was the reason for both my storytelling and my writing, because every night she’d read bedtime stories with the voices and all.
Soon, I was writing books on construction paper and drawing picture books in notebooks about my two teddy bears going adventures, and because I was so creative with names their names were Bear-Bear and Little Bear-Bear. Notebooks became the obvious gift to give, because everywhere I went I was writing stories in notebooks about everything that came to mind. I excelled in English, writing stories and essays was easy and even kids who were mean to me wanted me to help them in group projects.
Regrettably all my notebooks got lost, but one day in sophomore year, I began writing again in a big fancy notebook a Transformers fan fiction, and my English teacher—who always saw me writing—encouraged me to sign up for the school’s writing contest. I did, and with all these other entries and it only being my first contest, I won third and got recommended to sign up for the writing class. In that half year course, I learned poetry, creative essays, script writing, and the tools to improve.
My writing got better, and while I still only won third in contest, I got awards for my contribution in writing club. I wanted to go to an art school for a creative writing degree, but that didn’t happen.
Everyone in my family has a stable job, a typical 9 to 5 has health insurance kind of job. Writers don’t typically have that in their eyes, but if I wanted to apply I could, but everyone was pushing for English teacher. My guidance counselor looked at my schools and before I could say “wait!” deleted the art school off the list of colleges; she also didn’t help when I accidentally early accepted to a school I didn’t want to go to.
From the moment I entered that college I didn’t want to be in, my writing dwindled. I wasn’t happy and my spark was a dying ember until I was flunking out of college that I screamed “I don’t want to be a teacher!”
My parents let me apply to this art school I wanted to go to, but because my grades were so low they didn’t accept me until I got them up. I did fantastic in writing and arts, but math and history I was dying. I focused on my writing blog, writing headcanons between classes to the point I was writing up to twenty-five asks a day and burning out to keep up with the flood of requests.
After struggling with these required academics and an unhealthy need to be validated by strangers on the internet, I dropped out just before the pandemic began.
Now it’s over two years later, I got two part-time jobs that suck, no degree, and no clue what I’m doing with my life. However, I write what I want to write now, and I’ve never been more happy to share my stories; even if it is only five people reading them, it’s enough.

A Cure for Insomnia CH.4
WARNING OF DEPICTION OF A PANIC ATTACK and mentions of drugging.
////////
The rest of the day went by pretty uneventfully. That is after Nate lectured you about stranger danger and how you couldn't just walk forty miles in two hours. You really have no clue how you messed up the math that bad or how calling Nate for a ride never crossed your mind. Nate made you promise not to get into another stranger's car, especially without knowing their fucking names.
“I mean seriously YN, you just hopped in their car because they had a dog?! That's literally the first thing they tell you not to do when you learn about stranger danger!” he said munching on a boston cream donut. It was a good thing you'd brought donuts because you caused this man to stress eat...or was that a bad thing?
After you agreed to having better stranger danger instincts, Nate told you things would be run a little differently around the shop. Apparently the camera out back had died on Sunday, which although weird could be explained away as a camera that hasn't been updated or switched out since the shop was opened, maybe even before then too. So unfortunately Big Jo and Nate still didn't know who broke into your car or if they had been looking for anything. But Big Jo still wants to take precautions like the two of you leaving together and in the morning one of you waiting in their car with the doors locked for the other to come and then entering the building together.
Nate also mentioned a few other things, shipping and inventory related, that wouldn't really pertain to you or change any of your current tasks. It's really just to limit the amount of people coming through the back room. The back room was the emptiest you've ever seen when you went to check on your deer skull. You wonder if you hadn't been hired who would've gotten this position and how long they'd be able to keep their mouth shut about the obviously illegal activity going on. But you remember the person who had this position before you had been Bambi, a sweet if not oblivious girl. So, had you not come along the Cowells would have probably found someone else who didn't have an ounce of perception for their surroundings.
The week goes by slowly and with no further incidents. The deer skull has been completed and you plan on taking it to Maddie's Workshop next week to get a mount for it. In the time that you were bleaching and polishing the bones Nate took it upon himself to clean around the shop. Even though he's made it clear you just have to do your task list here, which takes about an hour maybe two depending on the tasks, he's always working on something.
Nate's the type of guy who's never content to just chill he needs to keep moving always chasing that high you get from accomplishing a goal, whatever he's made his that day. He's probably just substituting whatever he did daily with these new deep cleans of his.
Even with the lack of incidents following your car's break in the two of you have kept to the new precautions. Nate even going so far as to remind you tonight that on Monday if you arrive before him you'll need to stay in the car. At this point you think it's less about safety and more about the security of the store's extra curricular activities. Either way you don't really mind.
Things seemed to return to normal, you were back to driving yesterday and after you rearranged furniture in your house you felt a little less on edge. And every night this week you'd been able to get a good night's sleep, which although not too strange did stand out to you. Maybe another thing that had kept you on edge this week, because it meant when you saw a shadow pass by you during the day you couldn't write it off as quickly as you normally would.
But tonight it seemed your luck had run out. You sat on your bed with your sketch book in hand just doodling strange squiggles till your eyes were so tired they couldn't focus. Putting the book down to rest your eyes and crack your wrist, you sigh not feeling tired at all. The thought of a hike isn't really appealing right now, plus if you made a run into the mini mart you'd probably see either Ronnie or even Tim working behind the counter, that thought set your ears a flame. While the night life in Kepler was decent especially for a Friday night in summer, you just felt the need to be alone.
A drive was the best answer you had. You'd just choose a random lane on the interstate and take a random exit till you found a diner or something, order a tea and a slice of pie. Like you were a background character in someone else's story longingly staring out the window as your dreams slowly slipped through your fingers in this cold cruel world. Ok, you'd been joking about that because you saw a TikTok saying that, but your melodramatic ass actually thinks that sounds fun.
Throwing on some jeans and a flannel over you muscle tee, you were out the door. When you were checking the lock you'd heard rustling coming from around the house where your bins were. Worse case it's a stalker, best case just some raccoons. Either way you decided to calmly but briskly walk to your car, locking the doors immediately. Once in you drove around the side of your house, luckily, you assume, you spot the chonkiest raccoon you've ever seen digging through the bins. His tiny little person hands drawing an awww from you even though his demonic gleaming eyes should send a chill down your spine.
Hissing at the car Chonk returns to dig through your garbage. Weird how he only comes on your pizza weeks. Probably has a thing for Leo's homemade pizzas. You sure as hell do, as much as you love it you do save a slice for this little guy. You haven't put it out yet though, eh you'll do it tomorrow.
Having solved that mystery you sit in your car and link up your phone so you can have your driving playlist. It's mainly Folk Punk and Sea Shanties and while most might say it's a weird combination you say it's the same genre just different fonts. You could drive hundreds of miles into the middle of no where listening to this playlist and you'd be just fine...maybe have an emotional break down or two but expressing your emotions is suppose to be good for you. Mouthing along to Jim Bogart as it comes through the stereo you set off on your little excursion.
Just like when you have the urge to hike at night the urge to drive is nearly one in the same. Momentum taking you forward and not looking back as you do, needing to just go forward with no real destination in mind. Tonight however would be a little different you'd stop at the first diner you see that's out of Kepler bounds. Or turn right back around at one in case you hadn't found anything. There've been times that you kept driving straight through morning and didn't know where the hell you ended up. Not to mention you rarely remember the ways to get back after going for so long, and gps can only get you so far in some of the towns that also border the Monongahela Forest. You'd just have to rely on dumb luck tonight.
Unlike hiking, which gives you a burst of adrenaline as you push your body to its limits to move as far as you can and as much as you can. Driving gives a much more relaxed feeling, it's a feeling a weightlessness that gets lighter and lighter the further you get from home. Some may describe that feeling as a wanderlust or nomadic calling, but you've never cared for either of those things. You've only ever wanted to stay in one place for as long as you could remember. Moving around so much in your youth really messed you up, and you promised yourself this would be the last time you uprooted your life. And you've really come to love Kepler in these past few months. You can't imagine how you'll feel next year after getting to know the community more, but so far it's been really compassionate and understanding, a few rocky spots here and there but nothing like your hometown.
Without realizing it you've picked up your speed, you're doing 75 in a 55 zone. Even with no other vehicles around you slow down to just above the speed limit. While there might not be any cops around looking for easy tickets you don't want to risk dissociating at 75MPH or more. That could only end horribly. Though dissociating behind the wheel at all would be horrible. In the middle of shaking yourself from these thoughts you catch sight of an exit sign, which holds the logo for Denny's on it, and the exit is coming up in five miles. Switching lanes you cross over and get ready to hop off on the next exit.
You're pretty sure the only pie Denny's has is the dry apple with a scoop of ice cream. That isn't very appetizing to you, but then again you aren't really a fan of pie, a fact you seemed to gloss over when you made the decision to drive out here this late at night. Not too bothered by the fact, you remember Denny's has a salted caramel and banana pancake which should work in place of pie.
Pulling into the parking lot there are only three other cars, peering into the diner you don't really see anyone so the cars must belong to the skeleton night crew. Entering the Denny's you see there actually is one other patron, you only see the back of his head as he makes no move to look at the new arrival.
“Hun, seat yourself, I'll be out in a bit.” is the motherly voice that rings out from the kitchen, truly something you've only experienced in the south. Walking into a diner in the dead of night and  being treated like a daytime regular.
Seating yourself near the TV mounted to the wall you let the sounds of the soap opera playing drown out any buzzing you feel in your head. The waitress is out within minutes and though she startles at your masked face she regains her composure very quickly.
“I'd like the salted caramel pancakes if it's alright.” you say declining the offered menu.
“Just the pancakes?”
“Ah, yes please. And water's fine too.” it really pays to know the menu prior to coming in. Gives you ample time to run scripts over in your head.
Viv, the name on her name tag, nods and gives you a smile as she spins right round to the kitchen. Probably happy she won't have to run out so many times for just one order or maybe to spend time with the cooks in the back. You remember working food service sucked but the line cooks made it so much better at the end of the day. Even if they said you were too quiet and called you 'mouse'.
It might not have been exactly what you set out to do but this little midnight self date was really nice, you should do this more often.
Pancakes finished and mask back on you waited for Viv to bring out your check,  then you notice the other patron also making his moves to leave. You're sat facing the door so when he turns and comes closer dread fills your veins like burning cold dry ice. It's David, a local from Kepler you briefly met when you first moved. He gave you really bad vibes and over all was just a very skeevy dude.
What made you feel worse about him was when he left town to “help his sister” right after Bambi disappeared. Those in your circle told you she always talked about leaving Kepler one day but you trusted your gut in saying she didn't leave by her own choice. It got made for her, and David leaving just furthered your theory. You look away hoping he hadn't noticed you but unfortunately you could hear his footsteps falter and then pick back up by passing the door completely.
“Hey...YN, right?” fuck he remembers you, alarm bells are ringing at this fact. Why would he remember someone he briefly met months ago?
“It really is you, still as quiet as I remember.” what did he mean the two of you only met a handful of times and that had been because of your mutual friendship with Bambi.
Where is Viv with the check? You'd really like if she saved you from this painful situation right now. But you aren't sure what's worse having to sit here and listen to David tell you everything he's been up to these past few months, like you even care. Or the thought of leaving with David having him follow you and maybe doing whatever he did to Bambi to you.
“Yea so my sister's better now, I should be seeing you around soon. We should catch up maybe do Saturday Night Dead. Does the Crypt still do that?” great a fucking rhetorical question, he knows the Cryptonomica still does it's weekly movie nights, it's only been two months he's been gone. Not to mention it's a big hit and a huge source of revenue for the shop.
You haven't said anything this whole time, fuck being polite to a potential killer, and fuck being polite to this creep. He's just been talking nearly nonstop for the last few minutes. He must really love the sound of his own voice or thinks he's the most charming person to ever grace the Earth with his presence. Since he's not really caring that you aren't proving to be a stimulating partner in this conversation. He really does love hearing himself talk. By the time he's said his own goodbyes Viv finally makes it out from the back.
She apologizes for the wait, had to go on her break sometime you supposed. You take your time finding your wallet, it's in your back pocket but you wanted to stall for time since you could still see David's car out there, you were also keeping an eye on your own car. Only relaxing when you saw him pull off from the corner of your eye. Oh look you've “found” your wallet,  handing Viv your credit card you just want to get out of here quickly now.
You pay and leave a nice tip for Viv, while she didn't save you from that creep it's not like she could've known. You sit in your car for a moment or two just breathing in and out in the glow of the diner lights. Almost meditating before you begin your long drive back to Kepler with all these thoughts of David, Bambi's disappearance, and how it can't be coincidence that David is coming back at the same time that you have a break in. Could you be his next target? Were you just over thinking things? Just blaming this poor guy because you didn't like him? But you've always been intuitive and bad vibes aren't something to ignore. David appearing now meant something.
Just that thought alone put you on edge as your skin begins to crawl. With a few calming breaths you go to start the car and sync your radio when you notice the glow of the lights changed from the slight yellow to a sterile blueish white. Looking up where the diner should be you see the mini mart back at Kepler...how on earth did you get here? You didn't drive! You couldn't have dissociated while driving, you never even turned the car on and you can barely take a hike dissociating let alone do something as complex as drive a car.
It happens before you can register it, on shaky legs that move on their own you are passing the threshold of the convenience store and catching the tail end of a conversation.
“ppened to not feeding into delus...” the voice cuts off as the door shuts behind you. You know that voice why is it so hard to focus?
Something warm brushes your hand and you see someone in front of you. Who is that? You can't see their face, they've got a mask covering their face. Like you but that person is not you. You might know them...Tobais?
“Yea? You good there?” confusion, you blink hard and see you are standing in the mini mart now, Connor standing under your hand, Toby hovering close by and both Brian and Tim watch with unease over by the register.
“...I don't know how I...how I got here.” you register movement in the background but not consciously.
It's the shifting of Brian's head as he looks out the front windows and spots your Kia.
“You drove.” shaking your head, “Maybe...I don't...I dissociated?” in your confusion you can register Toby stiffen in front of you.
Fear, fear, uneasy, breath....are you breathing? Your head's so jumbled right now.
You scan the shop trying to look for answers that may help you but you find none. The more confused you get the more worked up you get, chest rising and falling rapidly. You take a step back or try to and end up falling on your butt. It's starting to get hard to breathe with your throat constricting, you bring a hand up to your larynx.
“..re.....have..attack......”
        “could be o...me..”
“.....pressure...”
Is all you can make out with your fuzzy consciousness before a heavy pressure is piling on your chest and knocking you fully on your back. The pressure is actually pretty lifting as contradictory as it may seem. Instead of restricting your breathing more it seems to be kick starting your lungs to exhale and inhale. With oxygen coming back into your body you can feel your toes and the tingle behind them. You can feel your fingers and the fur under them. Fur?
Taking in a big breath you move your head and come face to muzzle with Connor.  You give a nod of recognition to the dog before lying flat again and staring up at the ceiling. After about ten minutes you're thinking more clearly than before, which isn't saying much.
“Thanks.” you aren't sure who it's directed at but you still mean it.
It's silent until Toby breaks it, “I'm taking you home.”
“Car.” it's all you can manage to say but the message though distorted got through.
“I'll drive it, Brian follow behind.” there is no room for arguing, driving under any influence must be a touchy subject for Toby. Or maybe you're really fucked up right now and just can't comprehend how bad.
You use Connor to get up, he seems ready and no one else makes a move to you. Toby pushes past and holds the door open as Connor guides you, still holding onto his vest with one hand, and Brian murmurs something to Tim before following you three.
Outside Toby already has your keys in his hand, when did he get those? Did you give them to him? Your hand is risen, you must of...how on earth did you even drive like this. Had you really driven? There's a lump in your throat again and you're breathing's gone shaky, god you hope you didn't hurt anyone. You must have been zoning out for too long, not only is Connor pushing your legs but Toby has a grasp on your forearm coaxing you forward.
His grip isn't suffocating, honestly even seeing it there you still don't feel it. Maybe it's because you're so numb, or maybe it's because he's genuinely helping you but you can't feel the pain that  usually comes with being touched. The sharp jab that feels like you've been struck with a fire poker where ever someone laid their hands on you. After he's pushed you into the backseat, more like nudged you, even making sure you didn't bump your head, he buckles you in then snaps and Connor jumps into the car and lays across your lap.
You're shaking, actually trembling as you look at Toby. What's going on? Why can't you figure out what's happening? The brunette doesn't say a thing as he gets into the driver's seat and buckles in to drive you home. That's strange you think, how does he know where to go? You told him right, just follow the road...or maybe he guessed from the other day. What happened to you? Why the mini mart? You were at Denny's.
“This town doesn't have a Denny's.” did you say that out loud?
“I...I went for a drive, a town over...up...no.. north I think...” you start blinking barely able to keep your eyes open before your eyes lock shut. It's sending you over the edge even more in your confusion.
“Hey, hey just focus on the Denny's. What'd you do once you got there?” is he trying to distract you? Calm you down? Or is he trying to piece together what happened like you are? You can remember Denny's just fine, the dull yellow glow of the inside the skeleton crew murmuring in the back, the pancakes you had, and the “conversation” with David. Did David do this, had he put something in your water glass? Did you even touch your water glass after he left? Breathe. You need to breathe. Toby's waiting.
“Pancakes...I had pancakes. Then that creep came over...and he started talking. Didn't like. We aren't friends, I don't know him. I don't understand why he'd talk to me. Didn't like. Didn't like.” finger back to pressing down on your larynx and the weight of Connor preventing your legs from striking out at the seat in front of you.
“Wait, were you drugged?” Eyes flash to the rear view to lock with your own teary stare.
“No, maybe...I don't think so.” you barely feel the pain in your throat right now, this is all so overwhelming. “He left, I...I watched him drive off before getting in my car... I had an episode while the car was off then..” then you were at the mini mart. You never touched the ignition.
“I didn't drive, I never started the car. Didn't, didn't, didn't” Your attack is probably stressing even Connor out now, but this is all so confusing.
You're so focused on the fuzzy events you don't notice Toby bristle. Or how he grips the steering wheel tighter until his knuckles grow white despite his already translucent skin. He might not be able to feel or see it in the mirror through his mask but he's probably gnawing off more of his face. He'd deal with it after he dealt with you.
You've made it to your house and he's waiting for the headlights from Brian. When he sees them in the rear view he gets out but not before telling you, or maybe Connor, to stay put.
It's a few long moments before he comes back. But in the silence and darkness of your car, growing colder by the moment, you start to ground yourself. You aren't calm by any means and you're still very unfocused. But you aren't crying as the numbness overtakes you, you don't even jump when the door beside you opens. With a snap Connor is out of the car and soon you're being pulled from the car, that same weightless touch gripping your forearm. Toby guides you into your own home, and walks towards the hallway looking into the bathroom, the only other door, before finding your room.
Seemingly understanding your catatonic state he sits you on the bed and gives some order to Connor before he leaves the room. And you just sit on the bed staring into dead air as a silent guard sits in wait. You aren't sure what he's waiting for or why he's still there but the numbness has taken over too much and you can't find it in you to give a single fuck.

didn't mean to make you cry (lee donghyuck)
Summary: when your design project partner’s joking criticism unintentionally makes you cry, how will he fix it? after all, you’re his crush...
Genre: hurt/comfort?, fluff
Pairing: donghyuck x artist!reader, high school!au
Word count: 1.5k
Tumblr media
When you were paired up with the outgoing, edgy, purple-haired boy in class for your design assignment, you thought your final grade was done for. The purple-haired class clown, Lee Donghyuck, who wears leather jackets and looks like he plays with fire in his free time, but actually has a kind heart and warm aura.
You thought Donghyuck would ditch you in the very beginning, dumping the entire assignment onto you and opting to hit up the local night market with his friends instead, but he had surprised you. Throughout the month, Donghyuck had stayed on task in classes and been very attentive to your vision and goals for the project. Together, you were assigned to create a design layout that would display students’ artwork and be printed in the school newspaper.
Though your peers in class all opted for a traditional newspaper design, with serif fonts and boxy modules, you wanted to break out of the norm and create a futuristic vibe, with circles and vivid motifs, to emanate a clean aura in your work. When you were paired with Donghyuck, you feared he would shut down your creative vision, but instead, he had been extremely supportive and helpful in the project, even offering insight to improve the layout and refine the modern look of the pages.
For fun, you had put some close-up photos of your old sketches and drawings in the background. You thought Donghyuck would have called you self-centered for putting your own personal works on the page, but he had proven you wrong by complimenting the design afterwards. Together, your smooth black pen lines and colored pencil textures created a personal, diary-like feeling to the design, while the minimalistic modules and white space kept the clean modern vibes.
His willingness to cooperate and kindness to you and your ideas had truly shocked you, and erased the bad boy/lazy rebel image you had thought of him. He seemed like someone you wanted to get closer with, maybe.
“Donghyuck and Y/N, time for your evaluation.” the teacher called you two up.
“Hm, this corner of the page is a little crowded. It’s hard on the eyes,” Ms. Kang says.
“It’s because y/n drew the picture there,” says Donghyuck. “It’s ugly, right?” He says it in a joking manner, and you know he doesn’t mean it like that, but the words stir up some insecurities you’ve suppressed for a long time.
Ms. Kang laughs along with him. “Donghyuck, don’t be mean. Her drawing looks fine…”
--
You know he was joking when he had called your drawing ugly, but you couldn’t help but think that maybe he truly meant it. People were always like that to you.
In elementary school, your parents had loved your art. Your scribbly golden retrievers, your painted landscapes, they had praised each one and hung them up on the refrigerator, and you were so proud to have a talent that they were proud of.
In eighth grade, your hyper realistic self-portrait earned you a ticket to New York to have your art displayed at a museum’s exhibit highlighting children’s artworks. You began to think this talent could take off and become a career, but your parents disagreed.
“Art doesn’t make money, y/n. Do you want to starve when you grow up?”
As you grew older, your art got better but your parents’ support decreased. Though you could draw a golden retriever 100 times better than before, your parents weren’t praising you.
“It’s ok, y/n. It looks kind of ugly.”
“That’s supposed to be you? It’s ugly-”
“Why did you draw me so ugly-”
Ugly was such a short word. But why did it hurt so much? Whenever you saw your parents’ faces, you just thought about your ugly, meaningless passion: art.
--
The bell rang.
“Ah, I barely noticed the time. We’ll finish grading your design next class.” says Ms. Kang.
“Cool, thanks seonsaengnim,” Donghyuck responds. “Y/n, what did you think? She really liked the-”
You stand up, grabbing your bag and leaving for the cafeteria. You couldn’t hear Donghyuck’s words over your parents’ criticisms ringing in your head.
“Are you dumb? You’re NOT going to art school.” “No more art, y/n. It’s meaningless.” It had been a while since the word “ugly” had come up when talking about your art, your hobby, your talent, no -- your sole passion in life that gave you a purpose. You didn’t even notice your eyes watering up.
“Y/n, didn’t you hear me?” Donghyuck catches up beside you. “Ms. Kang said -- wait, are you crying?”
You’re taken aback, looking up to the face on your left. Concern flashes through his eyes as a sense of embarrassment pierces your chest. He thinks I cried because of a dumb joke he made, you think to yourself. He thinks I’m too sensitive and weak like that.
“Don’t worry about it,” you tell him, taking a u-turn to seek refuge in the bathroom.
At lunch, you plop your tray beside your friend Renjun, taking a seat.
“How was the project evaluation?” He asks.
“Renjun, you’re gonna laugh when I say this. I cried for no reason in front of Donghyuck,” you reveal.
“Why? What happened?” He asks worriedly.
You explain the purple-haired kid in your class, the design project, the thoughts that had rushed through your mind after Donghyuck had jokingly called your art ugly. Renjun, who you had first met in art class and hoped to become an art student himself, was one of few people who truly understood your insecurities about your future in art.
“He probably thinks I’m weird and too sensitive now,” you say.
“Maybe,” he says. Renjun was never one to lie, even if the truth hurt a little bit. “It’s okay though, you probably won’t see him ever again after this year.” He puts a hand on your shoulder, patting it comfortingly.
“You’re right,” you laugh, scooping up another spoonful of rice.
--
How can she be laughing so much after crying less than twenty minutes ago? Donghyuck asks himself from across the cafeteria. Did I do something wrong?
“Donghyuck, what’s on your mind?” pipes up Jeno. “What are you looking at?”
“Hm? Oh… Earlier in class, that girl over there cried after I said something but I’m not sure why.” Donghyuck answers.
Jeno raises his head to look over at the girl in question. “Oh! Y/n? She’s so nice though, how did you even make her cry?” “I don’t know! That’s what I want to know!” Donghyuck defends himself. “Who’s sitting next to her though? She was just crying last class, why is she laughing already?”
“Oh, that’s Renjun. Why don’t you just ask him? He seemed pretty chill in math class last year,” Jeno suggests.
--
When Donghyuck sees Renjun turn into the boys’ bathroom before class, he follows.
“Renjun!” he calls out.
Renjun turns around to see the owner of the unfamiliar voice.
“Why did y/n cry? Did I do something wrong?”
Tilting his head to process the sudden interrogation, Renjun notices Donghyuck’s bright purple hair and makes the connection.
“Oh, you’re Donghyuck,” he remarks.
“Please, Renjun, tell me if I did something wrong. I need to know.”
“Why do you care so much?” Renjun asks. “Don’t worry about it, she’s not mad at you.”
“No, please. Please tell me. I-” Donghyuck starts. How can he admit his crush on you to a stranger right now? He can’t miss his chance. “I-I like y/n. I need to know if I did something wrong. I want to fix it. Please, Renjun.”
Donghyuck had loved your drawings. He had loved your designs too. And loved you too. He loved how concentrated you focused when designing the layout, how your fingers gracefully pushed hair behind your ears when it fell in your face. He loved how your passion and dedication shined through in everything you did, whether it was your voice in a presentation, or the speed and concentration of your fingers on a keyboard. You were his crush, but also his role model. He couldn’t live with himself if he had made you cry.
Renjun explained your situation, your art, your parents, your self-doubt to Donghyuck. “Shoot your shot, Donghyuck. I think maybe y/n likes you too,” he said before pushing the door open and leaving quickly to hide his growing smile.
Alone in the bathroom, Donghyuck breathes a sigh of relief.
--
The next day in class, Donghyuck slides his backpack on the desk beside you, instead of his usual seat in the back.
You look up, unsure how to face him. Should you explain why you cried? Or pretend like it didn’t happen?
He slips a folded pink piece of paper onto your desk, nodding at you to open it.
You unfold the paper to see a doodle of a girl and boy, painting the sky together under some clouds. Amongst the clouds read “Your art is amazing. And you are too.” in a neat script. On the bottom of the paper: “Wanna come with me to the night market on Saturday?”
You look up at Donghyuck, searching his eyes to see if this is some pitiful joke or attempt to amend. Instead, you just see a glazed, lovestruck gaze in his eyes.
“I promise I won’t make you cry this time,” he says.
